Safe to upgrade ROM? - Touch HD General

Hi, I'm on O2 in the UK. I was just about to update the ROM from the official HTC site. However on the site it says:
"This is a generic software update. Any additional software or settings provided by your mobile operator or company will be lost. If you require this customization, please contact your supplier first before upgrading."
So by upgrading the ROM will I lose any settings provided by O2 which will be impossible to get back?? As far as I can tell O2 havent added anything to my phone anyway, just thought I'd check on here first.
Also, would I be better off going straight to the ROM forum section and choosing one of the customised ROM's rather than the official one?

It will be fine I'm on o2 and have flashed loads of roms. As part of the initial rom setup connection manager launches and you are asked to confirm which netowrk you are on, select o2 and all your settings will be put onto the new rom.
Make sure you backup your contacts, photos and music you have as these will all go as part of the flashing process.
Also make sure you've got the cabs to install any additional software that you use.

Cool, So did you have to do anything to get your Internet working again on there? I would really like to give a new rom a go.

Yes, you have to press the OK button to confirm that O2 is your provider, I think that shouldn't prove to be too much trouble

As spud_work quite rightly stated once you have flashed any new rom, whether it be a cokked one or not, you have an initial setup at start. You will be asked who your network provider is and you choose from list. Once selected your phone is set up automatically for you, and then you are free to use!!

Excellent Thanks so much guys! I will give it a go that is what I have been most concerned with! You guys Rock!

02 xda mini rom? updates? keep origonal? change to...i-mate?

finding it hard to get good answers....so in anybodies opinion
the 02 xda mini s
is there any updates from the origonal 1.5.4.2 WWE? if so where can i get em from?
If no updates, maybe the 02 rom isnt the most up-to-date?? and it would be better to change to i-mate? or a q-tec?...if so...which would people recommend? and where could i find them? also...would they effect my being on 02 at all or would evrything stay the same and just the device will work better?!?
what do people think?
jamie
Hello jamie,
I would think that you should at least upgrade to the qtek9100 rom if u worry that u might not turn back to the O2 provided ROM. Or if you want even better performance, you can use the latest imate ROM. But i read in posts that you cannot downgrade as the loki wizard does not work in this rom.
Anyhow, i'm using an xda mini S and using the imate rom though.
Cheers
I was wondering about this as well. I've got an O2 XDA Mini S and it all seems to be working fine (so far). I don't use it for anything spectacular though phone, diary, notebook and I have a few other apps on it. I also run spb pocket plus and spb diary, again with no particular problems.
I know the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but are there any benefits from moving to the latest imate ROM, say?
tzehming,
You said you couldn't downgrade. Do you mean that once you put the latest imate ROM on, you can't ever go back to the original O2? Also, what's the deal with LokiWizard - is there something that needs to be done before the ROM can be upgraded?
(apologies for the dumb questions, I'm starting to get to know my way around the device)
Thanks,
John

Hello jko,
Yup u're right about having to use loki to unlock the rom. Search it in the forum and u'll find it. Just type loki.
After unlocking using the software, you can then install any rom for wizards, i.e. O2 mini xda s rom, imate rom or qtek 9100 rom. The one i'm using now is the latest one, which is the imate rom. I heard it cant be downgraded and we'll have to wait for an updated loki software to fix that. But the qtek 9100 rom can be downgraded again. I suggest u try the qtek rom as it makes the pda much faster. The O2 rom is really a turtle when opening the slider and closing it.
Hope this helps
Having read the advice above I'm going to unlock my device and flash it with the qtek 9100 ROM.
Once I've done that, what CAB files do I need to install in order to get O2 MMS and O2 GPRS working again?
Thanks,

Can't answer your question, but just a request to post back your experience once you're done. It would be appreciated.
John
well, you could again search the forum for gprs settings. u may not get the automatic setup anymore, thereby may have to do it manually. search for O2 gprs in the forum. as for mms settings, someone made a cab file, I can't remember which forum , but again, it can be searched. Try O2 mms.
hope this helps
I've got the mini S too...
First thing I did when I got it was to get rid of all the o2 crap on it... couldn't believe how slow it was even in basic mode!
I did the whole hard reset then soft reset when it says "customizing..."
This basically leaves you with a bare o2 wm5 rom without any of the customiztion installed. MMS won't work and either will GPRS.
To get these working you need to install Total Commander on your mini S and browse to the /extended_rom/ directory.
The cab files in this directory are the files installed when it says "customizing..." on a hard reset.
You can then selectively install which ones you would like to install.
There is a brief outline of what each one is on the htc wizard page on the wiki but I've made a better one I'm gonna stick on there.
You also need to input the GPRS settings and MMS settings manually and install a cab from the extended rom that creates the MMS folder in the messaging application.
After you've done all this you'll notice a considerable improvement over the o2 rom with all the crapola installed.
I've also used lokiwizard to unlock it all.
Not tried the qtek rom or the new i-mate one... as I don't use push-email or the like and haven't found any considerable bugs yet I don't need to.
I have found naggaly features which after installing the RegistryWizard, NullKbd and a few others... they seemed to be solved!
I recently updated my O2 mini S 1.5.4.... rom to the new imate one and i must give my approval for upgrading to this rom. Its faster, more stable, is much better on battery life for some reason.

Where can I get this. It does not appear to be in the Rom download area (or is it under a different name?)
its in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=42638&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Well I successfully upgraded to the new i-mate ROM and it's MUCH faster. There's a lot less lag when sliding the keyboard in & out, and the general responsiveness of the device is considerably better.
I've managed to get GPRS working, and I've installed the MMS cab but I can't send or receive MMS's at the moment - it keeps telling me that it couldn't send the message. So I'm going to post elsewhere in this forum and check that I've got the correct MMS settings.
Overall though, I'd definately recommend upgrading to this ROM. Just remember to use Total Commander to take a backup of the O2 Extended ROM beforehand so that you've got the MMS cab-file available to install at a later date.
Excellent. Thanks for the feedback. I may well give it a go later today.
John
Code:
Just remember to use Total Commander to take a backup
Is this the one from Ghisler.com?
I downloaded this but cannot find any instructions or reference to backing up the Rom. Any idea where I can get the instructions (if there are any).
Code:
browse to the /extended_rom/ directory
I cannot see this in the Total Commander Directory list.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Just got my o2 mini s a couple of days ago and I am loving it soo far!!
However, I already encountered a couple of bugs - the system laggss REALLLI bad, like when the slider is pushed out, even when closing/running certain programs the device hangs. Also, I have seen a couple of times where the "phone" application will not load up. In all these cases I have had to do a soft reset on the device.
I am thinking of upgrading the rom - but this is my first pda, and i know nothing at all about fidgeting with the software. I don't want to mess up such an expensive phone so is it pretty easy to do?
w_2k20a:
I too want to be careful.
I have 2 phones, and my O2 Mini S is slow compared to my MDA Vario.
So I am going to try and run an update to replace the ROM on the O2 with the newer one on the Vario, and also get rid of the O2 add-ins which are what slow it down apparently.
I will try this first because I have read about so many problems with the latest I-mate one, and it is not easy to return to the original ROM if it does give problems (although it is possible it seems tricky) - I may the Imate one later if I need to.
The ROM for the Vario (along with others) is here:
ftp://[email protected]/Wizard/Roms/Tmobile/ - use password xda
Its the UK one.
But first I backed up my Mini ROM. I used awizard to do this. Read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43399
I think that you will find that using the awizard (get it from this link)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37386&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
the backup part is easy. I have done that quite successfully.
Good Luck.

Can I remove o2 software from an XDA IIi?

Hi there, new here.
Have had a search but couldn't find an answer so:
I have an o2 XDA IIi.
Is it possible at all to reset this device to just a generic device without all the o2 software mods?
If it is does it affect its ability to work on the o2 network (or other networks)- voice and data only.
Also, can this device be upgraded to WM2005 at all?
Thanks
Andrew
hi,
search at this forum about unlock sim tools, so that you can use other networks.
there's no WM2005 for this device.
thanks
Just search for Pug's modified ROM with all the o2 Stuff ripped off. Or install the i-mate or qtek ROMs for this device, as I have done. It works fine, and doesn t effect the operation on the o2 network. You will have to download a CAB file with all the o2 settings off either the i-mate website or on these forums, though.
Thanks
Simpler one is while doing a hard reset ..
when the PDA installing the customization stuff it will ask you to specifiy if your Pocket PC for Personal or Corporate just press cancel
then again press cancell if it tries to install any software then it will ask you are U sure you want to cancel installing 'O2 Mobile Solution SLR' just press Yes ..
thats all
Now your PDA out of O2 setting and customizations ..
NOTE : every hard reset you need to repeat the procedure as it stored in the ROM....
if you wana get rid of all these stuff permenantly used ( ripped-off modified rom ) from xda-developmers ftp site
cheers
Thank you for the replies.
I have tried the soft reset method for now - knowing me I would mess up the ROM upgrade!
Does the job and now looks a lot cleaner
Unlocked too and now running Vodafone...
Andrew
Just another quick question.
Getting confused as to exactly the make and model of my XDA IIi.
I had a look on the i-mate site as suggested above but when I register it does not like my EMEI number.
I also see the Himalaya/Andes and Alpine all look physically the same.
Which is mine and who actually makes it?
The model no of the device says PH10C.
Thanks
Andrew
The XDA IIi is an Alpine.
You can not register an o2 IMEI on i-mate's or Qtek's website, or vice versa. They are different distributors!!!
However, most of the Alpine ROMs can be found on this website or by Googling 'HTC ROM' or something alike.
For i-mate's ROMs, visit here:

Official UK/Europe ROM to replace Orange ROM?

I've just bought a UK HTC Touch HD that was locked to Orange and is now unlocked. I want to get rid of the Orange branding software by flashing to the latest 'Official' HTC Rom but have found that the only ROM on the HTC site is 'unsuitable' for my phone after inputting the Ser No. Can someone point me in the direction of the corrrect ROM file or is there a good reason why I should use a 'unofficial' ROM?

Hiya mate, welcome to the forum. I don't blame you for wanting to get rid of the Orange branding, they seem to take pleasure in undoing all the hard work that HTC do and replace it with their puke inspired branding (Orange SPV E650 - PUKE!)
Right, first of all I'd suggest you read through the Blackstone Wiki (Link is stickied at the top of this forum) You'll find out most of what you need to know about flashing a new ROM, including chooseing between USPL and HSPL (Bootloader) - depending on whether you intend to do much flashing of ROMs to your device. There's also links to some Official HTC WWE roms that people have dumped from their phones and kindly re-packaged ready to be flashed.
As always, remember that flashing a new rom image, or SPL will invalidate your warranty, unless you can flash back to original - which is possible for SPL and ROM image provided you back up your original or know you can download an Original Orange ROM. Instructions for dumping your rom are also on the wiki.
Good luck!
Thanks, I'll have a trawl through all the info, hopefully I won't end up turning my new toy into a brick!
Nic
I've successfully 'de oranged' now by using :
Unsigned_HardSPL_for_Blackstone_OliNexe
followed by:
RUU_BlackStone_HTC_Europe_1.14.401.2_Radio_52.49a.25.26_1.09.25.14_Ship
Everything seems to be working just fine and the 'auto configuration' now works no matter what sim I use, who knows I might even be brave enough to start playing with 'Cooked' ROMS soon!
I've had my orange phone for a couple of days now and want to do the same as you. Can you tell me how you unlocked your phone and do you have to unlock it before you can put in a new ROM?
Also, once you put the new ROM in, did you have to set up the orange voicemail, internet, etc?
You don't need to network unlock before flashing. Mine is still locked to Orange despite having a Dutty rom on it.
I think a network unlock costs a few bob, look around the forums. Data just worked, and I had to remember that voicemail is on 123. And if it didn't I expect the config text they send out would reset it all for you.

Thanks for the reply. I wont bother with unlocking as I intend to stay with orange for at least the next 18 months. I have a couple more questions, if you don't mind:
How do they know to send the config text? Can they detect you updated the ROM?
This is something that I have also wondered about... do you have to note all data & MMS etc settings or are they predetermined by the sim or something?
I've flashed my phone probably about 20+ times with different ROMs and all have detected my Orange UK SIM settings.
Hope this helps.
The 'Auto Configuration' option in 'Connection setup' takes care of all the settings for you and you've still got the option of selecting the Country and Operator manually.

That is good to know. I was worried that the phone would forget how to do sms, internet, voicemail, etc.

I got the phone on 18-April, when I first got it, straight away I went to HTC and look for new rom, I think this is the rom that I'm currently using.
rom version: 2.32.707.2 (44800)
rom date: 04/07/09
radio version: 0.41.30.12
protocol version: 12.41.30.16H
Never use the old rom before, can't give any comparison comment but so far I have no problem with this rom.
I have same ROM as you have

Is there a lot of difference with what we have before?
I'm quite happy with the ROM i have now and am afraid that if I upgrade to the new ROM, some of the software i have installed will not work anymore after I do a restore from my backup file. Thanks in advance
the only 'problem; i notice is activesync is always on eating 99k usage. even if u off it, it will come back on

yup being test it since its being release...
kind of better gps reception. some improvement on the answering call menu... got 1 new menu pop up which you can slide to right to answer or left to ignore...
nothing outstanding about the ROM.

unlocked from t-mobile no internet access on vodafone

Hello -
I just bought an unused t-mobile HTC Hero.
I unlocked it for use on vodaphone.
Everything works fine except that I cannot use the mobile network - although it is apparently enabled in the phone, any attempt to access internet etc fails, saying "this application requires network access".
NB: access is fine using wi-fi.
Support at vodafone suggested a rom upgrade. ROM Download refused by HTC website (upgrade n/a for my phone's S/N, it said)
are the two issues related and how should I resolve them???
S/N (HT98SL903000)
build number: 1.76.110.6146733 CL47212 release keys.
many thanks,
alex
Have you checked the APN settings?
Regards,
Dave
Search for the vodafone ROM on the XDA-DEV Hero Wiki. Or google...
Or, just check youve got vodafones APN settings and not t-mobiles (like foxmeister said)

Thanks for that.
I will follow all of the suggestions.
One point though _ If it needs rom as well as correction of APN - is it worth considering a custom rom instead of getting tangled with vodafone?

Vodafone don't carry the Hero, so there is no Vodafone specific ROM for the Hero.
You've got a T-Mobile branded device with a 1.76 build on it, so my advice would be a MoDaCo ROM, or if you don't want a custom ROM, a generic HTC ROM. If you upgrade to the latest T-Mobile ROM, you'll end up with the "perfect" SPL meaning you'd have to downgrade via a goldcard before you could replace the ROM with something non-T-Mobile.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks again.
I now have internet access having sorted the APN. Much happier now (I got anxious cos the phone I bought in a box from another phone -- bearing the wrong serial number, IMEI etc )
but I'm attracted to the ROM change.
Is there a particular MoDaCo ROm that i should go for that wil allow the usual apps to be run alongside some level of compatibility with outlook and MS word etc?
cheers,
Alex

Well, head to http://hero.modaco.com and have a look. There will be a full version (3.1 IIRC) available free, and a beta of the next one (3.2beta5 IIRC) for paid members.
Try the free one, and if you like it, you might like to donate to Paul to keep him going. Also, that will get you access to his 'kitchen' to make your own custom ROM from the modaco base, but adding and removing things you don't want etc.
But there's really only 1 modaco custom rom (aka MCR), just make sure you get the right one (GSM/CDMA) so GSM for you I reckon.
