hi im new to htc phones and to the forum so please be gentle
i have an htc touch hd coming on thursday so im now gathering apps games etc to install on it but plan on flashing it to the latest version of miri 6.5 v 13 as i was told its a good rom to flash too........ is it ??
before i do a flash is there any recommended hot fixes from the htc.com website i should install and do i need do them before or after i update to version6.5. ?
and if someone can advise me is there any software i can install to limit my mobile internet usage ?
thanks
when you do a hotfix, it just adds some new stuff (or fixes old stuff) in the ROM. If you were to do a hard reset, you'd have to apply the hotfixes again. Changing a ROM does far more than a hard reset, since it wipes all the data on the phone (almost all, some things like SPL remain). Therefore doing a hotfix right before a hard reset or flashing a ROM wouldn't do anything since you'd have to reapply it right afterwards.
However, you should not have to apply the hotfix at all, since all most all cooked roms already have all htc hot fixes applied or atleast the ones that work and help =). I've never used miri's roms, but I'm pretty sure that she applies the hotfixes since her ROMs are mainstream.
As for your second question, not really sure what you're asking. Do you want a software that will stop using data once you reach a certain cap (like 100MB)? Or do you want software that stops using data when you don't want it to?
thanks your reply has cleared up what i wanted to know so thanks for your time replying .
my second question was meant to mean is there some software that will cap my internet data usage at a certain amount like 1oomb. i think i have 250mb allowance and i dont want to go over that at all
thank you
sorry i meant to ask what are the best roms to use for 6.5 is there a preferred one by most people .
I would never say that there are some 'best' or ROMs or ones that are better than others as that would be disrespectful to the cooks that spend a lot of time and hard work cooking them. Certain ROMs are meant to do certain things and others are meant to ommit things and there's also 'clean' ROMs and 'feature rich' ROMs. It all depends on what you need. If you're looking for a 'mainstream' ROM, I would reccomend going to the ROM section and looking through the ROM threads which have the most posts/views.
As for software that caps your bandwidth, it certainly sounds feasible, but I haven't seen/used it so I can't help you there too much. There is, however, plenty of software that lets you monitor your data usage, and then you could just turn off the data once you get to a certain amount.
maybe i should of rephrased my wording and not made it sound likes whos rom is better than another persons rom. it wasnt meant to sound disrespectful
i think what im looking for at the moment is what you say a clean rom. basically my touch hd arrives in the morning and for the moment until i get used to all this flashing and different radios (watever they are ) i just will want to get rid of the orange branding and have my touch like as if it was bought from htc.com
but before i do any of that i think my 1st task should be to run the boot loader and get my orange uk rom version from the phone and look on here for a back up of it . just in case i make some mistakes
cheers
Ok, so it came first thing this morning. I've spent the last few days reading up on the forum, and was wanting to flash a new rom (for the customised screens etc)
Now, I know I'm a NOOB in the biggest sense of the word when it comes to WM but some of the abbreviations in the guides are confusing me, can someone please explain them to me, or excatley what i need to be doing (just until i work my way round a bit!)
I know that there's a noobs guide, and i have read it honest, but i don't wanna be bricking it!
Pwweeease?
Make sure you have windows mobile device center installed on your pc. Connect the hd2 via usb to your computer (with the cable included with your hd2) and wait until windows mobile device center says it is connected.
To put an official rom on your hd2, download the rom and run the .exe included in the package. Follow the steps onscreen and you're done.
To put a custom rom on your hd2, you need to flash hardspl first. Steps are explained in detail here . Basically it involves connecting your hd2 to the pc, running the hardspl .exe file on your pc, and following the onscreen steps. Then that is done, and you will have to run the .exe file included in the custom rom package, and follow the onscreen steps again. To be safe you won't have any bugs, do a hard reset of your hd2 just after flashing the custom rom. Look here how to do that, it is explained at nr. 15. Pretty easy
good luck
if you make sure your hd2 battery doesn't run out (higher than 50% is usually said), and you make sure your pc doesn't shut down or do anything weird while updating, and you don't disconnect the cable while you are flashing, chances are practically 0 you will brick it.
What abbreviations are confusing you?
Cheers for the quick reply mate, i don't wanna come across as a complete knob (although i probably am already!)
TBH, it was things like hardspl and the other one, sspl or something?
If i put a customised ROM on it, is there any way of going back or is that it then?
Also, is windows 6.5.3 worth it? It's new out of the box, so have no idea whats what yet.
What, if any roms would people suggest? Also, do push notifications for twitter and facebook work? I've found already that the stock FB app that comes with it doesn't let you see people's comments on status's etc
All very confusing so far, but I'm still not reaching for the iphone back.....Yet!

best to check what you have got on the device before you start upgrading..lol
when my phone arrived most of the updates from htc were on it already..
Forget about sspl (softspl), you don't need it. Hardspl is "better" (to keep things simple)
Flashing a new rom will delete all your settings, installed programs, etc etc. So backup what you need before flashing (you can use microsoft MyPhone -which is preinstalled on hd2's- to backup certain things).
About going back, yea you can 'go back', in case you can download the rom that is currently on your hd2. It is probably official hd2 rom version 1.48, but of course i'm not sure. But i don't think you would want to go back, there is no reason to. Unless you hate new roms, but you can always find one that is undebatably better and more up to date than the rom you are using now.
Yea windows mobile 6.5.3 is nice and in some ways a little better than 6.5, but it doesn't work 100% correctly with HTC sense. There are some graphical glitches with this on 6.5.3 roms.
I prefer Dutty's 0.3a rom (here) because it is basically the same as your stock rom, but with up to date software, up to date windows mobile 6.5, updated htc sense - and everything works flawlessly for me.
Haven't tried push notifications for facebook or twitter, so can't comment on that. 6.5.3 roms have some graphical glitches with HTC sense. Many other 6.5 roms have other customizations that I don't like.
Forget about the iPhone, the hd2 baby is miles and miles better (yes i've used the iPhone).
if you need more recommendations, shoot
Cheers for that mate. I'm gonna put sprog to bed and give it a go!
You are correct in the fact that it is a stock 1.48 rom shipped on the phone, please excuse my ignorance, this is my first wm phone! I'm an expert on the iphone now though lol!
I did read about flashing with bepe's thing, is that still needed?
Hopefully i'll find some decent FB and twitter apps that does push (I'm addicted lol!)
Umm, then to sort out google activsync again!
"bepe's thing" is hardspl, which is needed only once (ever) to unlock your phone to enable flashing custom roms. So yes, you need to do it when you want to flash a custom rom.
I don't want to be a damp rag or anything but I'd personally use the phone for a week or two before installing any custom ROMs. When I received my phone it was perfect, lasted 2 days easy on one charge (with everything set to auto update) and had no camera issues. I then installed the unofficial 1.48 and now the battery struggles to get 2 days even with most auto updates turned off and the camera developed the over exposure issue. Now I regret updating it and am slightly hesitant to do it again.
Also, most custom ROMs at the moment do not have very major upgrades to them and are usually just very slightly tweaked. I'm waiting for something more worthwhile to be released (like WM6.5.3 with a fully functional Sense) before I go and HSPL my phone. Take a look at this user for an example of what might happen.
But then again I may be acting over cautious and might not be enjoying the full power and epic-ness out of my HD2.

What is unofficial 1.48? There is an official 1.48, and most unofficial custom roms are based on a higher rom version than 1.48. I think you're being a little over cautious, I have flashed practically millions of roms on HTC devices and never experienced a problem. The problems you are having with battery and camera are probably related to your custom rom choice and/or your settings.
But you're right that there isn't a world of difference between the stock rom and newest custom roms, the hd2 is a relatively new device. Still, I feel you can't go wrong by updating the rom to a good custom one, and it will be better than the stock rom. Dutty's holy grail 0.3a is my recommendation, but to each one his own.
Slow down mate!
Northerneil,
I know you are dying to get into your device and flash roms like there's no tomorrow. I say STOP, slow down, take your time.
I would get to know how your device works the way it is first. One good thing about this is that if there any hardware problems you can return the device as an exchange without having to undo loads of changes that are NOT warranty friendly.
Next, READ, READ and READ again. Flashing roms sounds quite simple and the process has improved tremendously. The problem isn't flashing a rom; its knowing how to recover if it all goes wrong. Its getting to know the pitfalls and how to get out of them e.g your device rebooting for no reason, which is a problem some serial flashers are having right now.
Welcome on board, hope you heed my advice although I appreciate you are a big boy and can do what you want. However a bricked device can take a long time to fix, even if you know what you are doing, and if you are lvery ucky.
WB
PS: Feel free to PM me if you want to know more about certain functions and abbreviations. You need to know as much as possible before you start tinkering with your device.

By "unofficial" I was referring to the 1.48 405 WWE that was available for download before HTC made it official on their website.
I am still running that "unofficial" 1.48 ROM with the stock settings so I doubt that these problems have anything to do with my settings.
I have installed several of the 2.1 roms out there. Each one that i install causes my phone to randomly restart. Is this a common issue with anyone else? As soon as I go back to 1.5, the restarting stops.
I am having the same issue on the stock 2.1. The only answer I have gotten from HTC is hard reset. But I have already done this twice. So I am going to root my phone and hopefully get rid of this problem. It only started after I updated to 2.1.

Silly question perhaps, but are you completely wiping data and dalvik cache before flashing any of these 2.1 ROMs? Sometimes this happens if you don't do a full wipe before installing new ROMs.
I'm having the same issue, and I did a full wipe, installed several different roms and finally settled on aloysius
i've had the same problems with every 2.1 rom with the exception of darchdroid.
for me it usually happened after i placed a phone call and tried to hang up
and yes everything was wiped before flashing....
im having the same issue i knew i wasnt the only one, has anyone figured out why this is???
I am getting that error trying to install ZenEXP.
Same issue here, only mine's been doing it out of the box, as I got mine the day the EVO was released. I've rooted it and attempted to install several ROMs hoping to get rid of the issue, but had no luck so far. Never had the luxury of having 1.5, as mine came with 2.1, so I just thought it was the phone, honestly. Interesting to know the issue doesn't occur with 1.5...
Anybody got a copy of the stock 1.5 from original release? I'd like to give it a shot.
I do not have any issues that have been listed here. I am running fresh rom and everything is working great.Just wanted to make sure all views arebeing represented in this thread
hmmm....had a thought, did the phone get really hot when it happened....cause that is what happened when i was on fresh....

You won't be able to go back to the stock 1.5 original. That has been tried already by a bunch of developers here and it didn't work. You would probably be able to flash a 1.5 ROM (browse way back into the Development pages forum here), but since you had stock 2.1, there's no way for you to go back to stock 1.5.
For all the rest of you, not sure why you are getting random reboots, but as mentioned in the previous post, sometimes the Heros do that when they get overheated or overworked. It would be best to root and start with a very stable, non-overclocked ROM. A couple of the most stable and reliable stock-based ROMs here in this section are DamageControl 2.09.1 and nfinitefx45's Stock 2.27.651.6. I recommend you try either of those out if you haven't already -- hopefully that will fix/solve some of your troubles.
Please report back if any if you have success or more problems with these...we want to make sure you get the help you need
overheating is defiantly not whats causing my restarting. im not trying to thread hijack so ill provide a link to the thread i started about this same issue. in my thread i have attached bug reports (i think thats what they are) and now i have stopped receiving help just when i provided the info needed to see whats casuing this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684727
Im not any good at code so i cant read the big reports well. but i believe its a hardware issue because there is a small presentage of people having these errors and i cant seam to get anyone to be able to reproduce this if it doesnt happen to them.

Sorry, I don't understand much of the code myself. And I think a handful of our devs here who understand all that coding have already moved on to the EVO. I read your other thread too but don't know what else to suggest. Wish I could help more. You could just be one of the unlucky few who got a bad, buggy phone right out of the box.
Have you thought about just calling Sprint customer service and asking for a replacement phone? Certainly with all the trouble you're having it may be worth it. I think even if you don't have the insurance plan, a replacement phone is only around $35.
@chromiumleaf, yeah sadly i think its time for a different phone.
I was on the phone with T-Mobile Support (611), regarding my HD2 and the issues that I am still having with this device. The rep. stated that T-Mobile is aware of the issues on the phone and that the 1st ROM update did not resolve them all and caused some new ones.
She stated specifically this new update would resolve the issue of the device hanging after you try to wake up the phone...also, the "unreliable data connection" issue is still prevalent (I still have this problem - and I have tried everything I can think of or read about). She stated that there are other fixes that they are working on to resolve with this new update.
I could not get a solid time frame, but she stated that it should be pretty quick, given that they issued the first one within a short time frame after the HD2 release.
Now, I'm not sure if this means an upgrade from 6.5 to 6.5.3, but I wouldn't count on it. I just hope it is released soon. This device is so nice and so awful at the same time. Constantly I experience little nagging issues that make using this device such a hassle.
Have you tried just flashing it to one of these custom ROMs?
No I have not yet tried the custom ROM yet on the HD2. I like the way the T-Mobile ROM are, I just am getting fed up with the "unreliable data connection" BS. Also, the phone (since the ROM update) has been running slow and I don't think that is acceptable with the 1GHz snapdragon on this device. My only other issue is that the speaker phone stops working because T-Mobile added some stupid software to the device. If you dial 611, the software pops up and tries to solve your problem via webpage and stops the speaker phone from working till you restart the device.
While that is a short list of issues, they are major issues in using the device. But I think i will wait till this 2nd update comes out...if it does not resolve my issues, custom ROM here I come!
I belive flashing NRG will solve your issues It did mine.
Which issue did it solve? The data connection issue?
Data and freezing as well not to mention the phone just flies now. flashing a new radio fixed reception issue
well I will give it a try and see if it resolves my issues as well. I figure we have about a month or so before T-mobile releases the 2nd update. I know I will not be able to last that long with these issues. It is just a pain in the a-- to flash ROMs every day...I'm not into doing it all the time. I would like to find a good stable ROM and run with it. It just takes too much time flashing and reinstalling all those programs and changing the settings to where I like them all (too much work).
Like I said it is a shame, i really like this device on paper, but in the real world is just has some serious issues. I thought i would get a year or two out of this device when i bought it, now I am already looking to swap this puppy out. I'm looking to see what is coming down the pipeline. I refuse to go with WP7 (feels like the step backwards with it limitations as compared to WM6.5 - and i don't want a device that clones the iPhone of 4 years ago)
Anyone other suggestion on custom ROMs?
NRG 21911 is very solid and you don't have to flash everyday it has xda uc and pim backup witch will back up and reinstall all your software I did it yesterday in about 20 min. I refrain from flashing during the week. the the first time it will take about an hour just read all you can on it. 670megs free space on device 13gigs on sd and 300 megs of free RAM
I'm downloading the 23121 Cookie Dinik Glass version right now...I'll let you know how it works on my device. thanks for pointing me in this direction, appreciate it!
tmobile rep told me the same thing after I had a warranty exchange, she said to expect the update soon as there are alot of people experiencing problems with the current software. Although to be honest after running Android on my HD2 I dont think I ever want to use winmo again.
are you getting everything to work with Android? i did not think they have a fully functional Android ROM for the HD2 yet
They're all the same...
My biggest complaint is the bad data connection. Paying too much money for crappy connection. I can't even get connection in my lower level of my house. I think every carrier and cell phones all have their own problems. My two co-workers, one with Droid and the other iPhone have similar problems. Droid keeps freezing 2 warranty phone exchanges so far and iPhone looses connection frequently. iPhone guy wishes his would freeze so he could get a replacement. So it's not just me.
Help me please
So i tried to install android, and on gthe web it said i needed to install hpsl well my phone had it set to 2.10 they stated i needed 2.08 or earlier so i did it but the install still didn't work !!! How can i return my phone back to 2.10 and still get my warranty back
android fo real?

i read on pocetnow that android is being worked on on xda. seen a couple of post too, but there is always some component not really working. is there an official android post where all the kinks are worked out? i would like to switch if thats the case. thanks.
Wow is all I can say about that NRG ROM....it is great! does everything I have been looking for, no data connection issues since last night (I'll report back on this issue as time goes by). It's fast and very stable (so far, but hell I'm impressed), and I did not even use most stable version the 21911.
The UI is great, I love the three pages of app slot, everything is within one or two finger stokes this way. It also gets rid of the apps that I don't want (ie TelNav, etc...) but keeps most of the apps that I do want...I can always install cabs for the programs I want from the official ROM. Plus it has cooked into it all those sweet tweaks and settings. Great work, I'm not even waiting for T-mobile to release the 2nd update any longer.
Thanks gtrplr71 again for suggesting this custom ROM, it's so nice, I don’t even think I will be trying out any other ROMs.
I would not get hopes up of a 6.5.3 upgrade. Could you imagine the Technical support nightmare if they had to troubleshoot 2 different OS versions?
This is one reason I think Android and Linux will really take off in the future.

There's a HD2 Android section in the original HD2 area (euro hd2 section).... but it is a work in progress. There are still a lot of issues and kinks. It will be a while before it works as well as a native android phone. But the progress they've made is unbelievable. It's great having both winmo and android on my phone.

your welcome don't forget to make a backup with pim backup to your sd card and use xda uc once you get things settled. Have fun!
how does the xda uc work? i could not figure that out, when I ran the app it stated that i did not have that file on my storage card...but it appeared there somehow.
Also, the incall record does not seem to work at all. when i lauch it (after I connect or before I connect a call) all I get is a blank lined page (note pad page).
And, is there a list of the added and removed apps somewhere? I could not find it in the ROM thread.
As for the 6.5.3 upgrade from T-Mobile, i don't think it will happen either and right now, after trying the NRG ROM...I don't care. I'm not even going to try the T-mobile 2nd ROM upgrade. Now with Android comes along on the HD2 (fully functional) then i will surely set up a dual boot situation on my HD2. That is like the best of both world.
(xda uc)-you wont notice anything different It will run and monitor the phone for new settings when you decide to flash a new build it will auto run and import settings and apps.

I have tried many times now to use CM or ASOP roms and their like and I find that I consistently have the same problem: no phone calls in (I would boot the rom and then call my cell from my house), can't hang up after a phone call and lousy GPS.
I don't have these problems when using a stock (Touch Wiz) based ROM.
Why is this?
Clearly it's a software issue, what could possibly be missing in the various roms that would make this happen?

Has anyone experienced this problem and has suggestions as to how to fix it?
Thanks
I flash a LOT of roms. Sometimes two or three a day. (I am going to meetings but I will always be a flashaholic.) I am almost constantly on AOSP because I do not like how clunky TW feels and there are about three or four things an AOSP rom does easily that you cannot do easily or at all on TW. I have had all of the problems you mentioned at one time or another but never all at once. When I first bought my SG4 and started flashing roms the GPS was a big issue but that problem is pretty much nonexistent now. The same with the inability to make a call. I have not seen that in awhile. I recently flashed a rom that I thought was running perfectly until I made a phone call and could not get the phone to hang up. I had to reboot to get the phone to disconnect. That was the first and only rom I have had that problem with. I think I reinstalled it a few days later after it had been updated and it worked fine.
Other things I have noticed is that Google's voice recongition does not work as well on AOSP roms and there can sometimes be a problem with MMS.
I say all of this to say that first, these roms are in development. They are not perfect. They sometimes have problems. If a rom has a glitch you cannot live with, go to a different rom.
Next, you have to follow the installation instructions to the letter. If it says to stand on one foot while installing the rom do it. I have seen some roms that have really weird install instruction but if you do not do it, the rom is not going to work. Acheron's Super S4 has you use specific recoveries and reboot into recovery. That is a little odd.
Next, if you feel you are constantly having these problems with all AOSP roms, which is odd, try flashing a stable version. CM has milestones. I know Liquid Smooth has an official 3.1 that is supposed to be very stable. See if you have these problems are more stable versions and instead of nightlys.
Next, I have seen people on the exact same model phone and carrier have greatly different experience with a rom. Individual phones seems to have their own quirks you have to learn. I believe most of this type of issue though is user error and you just don't realize you are doing something wrong.
Finally, the one thing I know nothing about is unlocking your phone for the international version. I wonder if that has anything to do with your problems.
Good luck and don't give up!
