Hello,
Is it possible to root the HTC Dream from rogers yet? I just purchased one yesterday and I am not sure if the procedure is the same as for the T-Mobile G1.
Thanks
I too would like more information on this. Thanks in advance.
Dream...
I believe the Dream and the G1 are actually the same devices. So what you can do to one, should also apply to the other.
I am curious to try the G1 procedure, but I am wondering a few things... Biggest thing is if rogers would be using the same key to sign the updates? and second is if downgrading to rc29 would brick my phone.
I wouldn't use the DREAIMG.NBH rooting procedure on the Rogers Dream. If I recall correctly, it includes a radio image (please correct me if I'm wrong). If that's the case, you wouldn't want to try to flash the radio from the G1 to your Rogers version that uses different frequencies.
I would venture a guess that the method Haykuro used to root the Sapphire would work, and should be safe to try even if it doesn't. Go here:
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting
I got that from a post in the Sapphire forum here on XDA Developers.
The key is to flash the recovery image with the rooted recovery image. I don't know what difference there may be between the magic and dream recovery images - you may want to grab the modified recovery image specifically for the dream and use it instead of the one on the wiki page.
Wish I had a Rogers Dream so I could try it. If any of you with this handset try it, post the result here!

I'm wondering this too. I'm not new to flashing devices etc but THIS is all new to me lol ... I found more info on This page that also explains about the radio however, I'm not sure what all applies or how things change with the Rogers phone. The more I read the more confused I get. One site said follow the link above and you wont have any problems, another said dont follow the site in order but do the radio first then flash the SPL.
Can someone please confirm the steps required to root the Rogers phone and then flash haykuro's ROgers ROM please? I just dont want to brick my device if at all possible (not that anyone really wants to brick their phones).
THanks guys!!
I am going to see if I can boot any of the recovery images without flashing them. I read in a thread thats possible....
None of the recovery images I've tried will boot on my device, Haykuro told me he's working on a solution with dream_kill to root this device.
So it can't be rooted yet?
Awwww I was hoping to put hero on

ya we must be patient.
i don't do that so well
the waiting game
I will be waiting as well. Though as soon as the US rooting procedure failed for me, I felt like Rogers had just bent me over and shoved a big rusty sand covered......you get the idea. Was it not enough to put Rogers logos all over the phone, but you had to take away our rooting ability's as well? How sad. But I like the phone too much to take it back Oh well, wait and hope for the best
All you guys (and girls) working on this, you totally rock!
Well, guess we're all in the same boat. I have been reading some of the other threads though, seems like maxawesome, has the Rogers Dream version, and had success rooting and flashing a few days ago, maybe he could share? Looks as though he is the first and possibly only to get root so far for rogers. I tried sending a pm to him, but not sure it went through. You should try, he has some posts in the "rogers rom" thread, just doesn't indicate which SPL version he ended up using.
I'm in the same boat as everyone else. Lets just hope we get to rooting our phones soon!
Just a suggestion: Perhaps you Canadians can try the goldcard method used for non-US/UK Dreams described in the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485364
EDIT: Sorry, I forgot that the updated SPL may cause bricking when the older radio is used. Please disregard this post!
Wasn't it just the haykuro modified spl that caused bricking? Of course, there is more to the radio on this device, even if it doesn't brick it, may result in a non-functional radio (until the correct radio is put back).
Work in progress
I see haykuro is working on it here
More waiting and searching.
Any other updates on where haykuro (or anyone else working on this) is at?
i think haykuro is looking for a device but its still hard to find in USA.
hrmmm ... wonder if we can put a call out and some extremely generous Canadian can send one to him ... seriously if I had a way to get my hand on another one without having to fork out $700 I'd totally contribute a phone

There was a locked thread in development where someone asked if it would work. A lot of people replied (obviously without even knowing what they are talking about) that it wouldn't work.
it DOES work on the myTouch 3G's - I just did it on one.
It works on any android phone - but the current apk implementation flashes the 1.4 cyanogen recovery image so it only works on phones that image will boot (i.e. the HTC Dream, or the Sapphire... etc)
It's way easier to apply that than it is to apply the nbh downgrade... etc.
Cool
I posted the question in a wrong area im glad someone with a mytouch tried it i bricked my first mytouch
Worked
This worked for me also I am now on CyanogenMod v3.9.11.2 and it works very well.
TY Cyanogen!
ed
Works...but hesitant
This definitely works on the MT3G just tried it...whew glad it worked Still extremely hesitant on flashing new rom though. Dont know why even though I have a rooted G1. Perhaps I just love this phone too much to f*#$ it up

Now that I think about it...If you just use this to get the recov img the MT3G still has the "perfected" spl. So exactly will this allow you to flash any new ROMs? That is why the "goldcard" was used to trick it and flash to an earlier "non-perfected" spl which would then allow you to flash ROMs updated radio etc etc etc. Shed any light on this?
I know there can be risks when doing any kind of modding/hacking. What is the main risk with rooting the MT3G? Is it mainly an issue with the battery falling out or running out of juice? Or is the rooting process invasive enough (i know it is root = can touch everything) or unstable enough that there is a relatively high probability of an issue running the canned procedure?
I have my phone, love it, my wife would kill me if I wrecked it. I just want to know how likely I am to end up with a brick using this method.
Also a question to understand this procedure, if I run the apk and reboot normally then there is no lasting root, correct? I have to go into the recovery mode and flash over a new rooted rom for root to become permanent? Does this actually change the SPL on the MT3G, does it preserve the ability to flash other roms at any time in the future? I want to know if this is a one time open up your phone for rooting or if after I do this will I always have root.
Sorry for all the questions, but I have been lurking around and haven't found definitive answers to these questions. Thanks!
Dave
Dave, Ive used this method. However if you didnt notice in my previous post...the spl does NOT change. Which is why I questioned the ability to flash any ROMs. The more "complicated" method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133) requires a "goldcard" with an earlier version of the spl. Which I believe allows flashing to occur.
Yeah, I saw your post after I posted. I think this is great for a simple root I am thinking to have future rooting I will need the goldcard method anyway.
It would seem that this method should be able to modify the SPL since it is able to run as root, maybe not though...
I did mine last night and now doing my wifes MT3G and I was comparing cyanogen's vs stock and its night and day...no loading screen issues with cyan's build and keyboard response got better too...
LOL yeah Ii was thinking about the SPL if we can change it out? I kinda want to call my phone semi-rooted
so anyone flash a new spl/radio using this one click root? success? or no?

Just did it...1.33.2005/ also S-off. this is definitely legit and makes things a hell of a lot more easier than all those damn adb commands. Dont get me wrong at all I do appreciate all the work that was done by Haykuro and the other boys because without them Im sure this wouldnt be possible. Anywho...it works.
Okay. As newb as one can get with phone mods, etc. But it actually works. I dont know what the exact benefits of it are but I am running... Mod version CyanogenMod-3.9.11.2 per about phone. All my downloads are gone but it worked. I dont know what the difference/any limitations is for down the road, in comparison to the gold card method (I hope none), with this type of root but hey it actually worked and I would have kick my own a$$ if I bricked my phone. Thanks to folks who found this way and are their any "rooted" differences now that I am on cfw using this method for say updating to cyanogens 4.0 eventual release?
Alright, I took the plunge and it worked flawlessly!
I use the 1 click install via the market app called Recovery Flasher. I installed CyanogenMod 4.0.1 Stable. Zoom zoom zoom...
I thought I may have had an issue when I rebooted after flashing since it sat at the MyTouch 3G splash for a ton longer than normal. I had read it was normal for the first boot to take longer so I didn't freak out and pull the battery. I just let it come up and now I couldn't be happier.
If I remember reading correctly CyanogenMod has the fix for the root vulnerability used in this hack to root plugged. So, now that I have a rooted ROM and recovery 1.4 will I ever need to worry about having the dreaded "Perfect SPL?"
so easy a caveman could do it! a thousand times, thank you.
so its confirmed you can FLASH a different SPL with no problem ? cuz if so im gettin a mytouch ! lol
go for it

Oh, thanks for Quick Office.
This post for anyone who knows how to root the new updated Rogers HTC Magic with the new:
32A
HBoot - 1.76.0010
Radio - 6.35.10.18
Please post any comments or suggestions if they are applicable.
Thank you.
Rogers HTC Magic (32A)
HBoot - 1.76.0010
Radio - 6.35.10.18
I'm in the same boat. Updated my phone with the Rogers updater, and 1.76.0010 seems to be a perfected SPL. I'm going to attempt the gold card method once I get the necessary hardware this weekend. I'm just concerned I might brick my phone, since all the gold card tutorials are pretty old...
+1
Any results?
Diddo, same problem. Tried the "One Click Root", no joy.
I thought that the data connection issue was b/c of the new radio so I foolishly listened to Rogers. Last time I make that mistake.
I am also in dire ned of a method to root this, or even reverse Rogers....
Maybe try the full version of the Relenless Rooter plus (the one for perfected SPL) software? It seems that 1.76.0010 is a perfect SPL.
Thankfully, I read all over the web and decided not to use the security patch that Rogers suggested and did not update. I kept the 1.33.0009 SPL and was able to use the normal Relenless Rooter software. Don't know it the full software will work for the 1.76.0010 SPL but why don't give it a try.
i'm pretty sure it has already been tried, and doesn't work
i too, am in the same boat
rogers kind of bullied us into this update, and i feel really stupid for falling for it.
i hope someone is working on a fix, tho i am yet to read one post saying that someone is.
Not to be mean or rude or a troll, but there were several warnings against updating with the official RUU.
In fact the "Rogers Mandatory Update Thread" many people mentioned many times to just wait till it was rooted then flash the rooted ROM.
But some people had to be hasty...

Yes and no. What do you expect when Rogers cut off your data if you don't update. If you went to Android forums or here, you'll find what kind of saga people with rooted phones went in order to obtain data back.
So, at that time, people with the original cupcake had three choices: Root the phone and go through curse droid's complicated process to get his rom, root and find another Rom + patch so as to trick Rogers into believing that the phone has been updated, or just go ahead and flash the official rom (and then hope someone can root it).

Complicated procedure? You are mixing up two methods that made it possible to keep root. For cursor, all u needed to do was flash spl and radio, then his Rom, that's it. There is another method that allows u to keep original radio and. Spl, this one uses a script after applying a new rom. Just giving the facts, I do feel sorry for those that jumped the gun though, i was really close myself

That's the reason for this thread. The update includes a new radio and no developer have found a way around it. Maybe the main developers (aka chefs) have moved on to newer and more exciting devices, like the Nexus One.
Who knows, maybe you guys can band together and pay a developer to do this?

It's the SPL that's perfected. Not the radio. And most devs for the 32A are still here. It's mostly G1/Dream devs namely Cyanogen who have moved on to the Nexus One.
Amon_RA is still giving updates to the G1/Dream and MT3G/Magic and Hero.

You are right about the SPL. I meant that too. I mixed Radio and SPL because Rogers is scanning for the new radio even for those who have root, as the developers page show.
Anyway, best of luck to those who upgraded and got the perfected SPL. Maybe someone can ask a favor from one of the developers?
Some help with rooting the 32A magic from rogers
Already asked for help via PM, no dice. I suspect that after the update the devs are inundated with requests. I'm happy to pay for someone to figure this out, but don't really know who to approach. Anyone?
So still no luck on anyone rooting this update... This is taking a lot longer then I thought it would. I only did the update because I was sure someone would be willing to jump right on and root this new SPL but no dice.

If we dont get root within the month then I'm calling Rogers and complaining to them about random misc stuff that I'll make up about the phone to get rid of it and get a new(better) phone.
I have a question I've been trying to resolve looking through the threads and have been unable:
I have a g1 that's rooted running android 1.5, and from what I can tell its either on the official t-mobile firmware or the developers firmware... I want to upgrade to android 1.6 mostly just for the text to voice and the voice navigation in google maps. I don't really want to load custom roms though... Is there anyway to load into android 1.6 and keep root, but have everything else the standard firmware?
developer.htc.com/adp.html
You can grab the official ADP1v1.6 firmware and write that to your device for a stock-but-root system image. (note: stupid people will tell you that it doesn't have root. They are incorrect, it most definitely DOES.)

It just gives the impression of not having root by flashing the stock recovery (which many people consider root for some reason)
oh lovely, after following those steps. The radio went fine the phone rebooted fine, but after the recovery image, the phone hangs on the android screen for a long time, and then pops up with continues force close error messages. I also can no longer boot into recovery it gives me a picture of a phone with an exclamation point.
Anyone have any ideas?
oh n/m. That exclamation point screen was in fact the recovery screen, it was different before i installed this. I formatted the memory card and wiped the data, and that seemed to do the trick, I'm up and running in 1.6 developers build. thanks guys =-)
Yeah, when I read your previous message I was about to suggest that...
Newbie-ish question
Hey all,
I know this sound a bit amateur, but I was just wondering if it were possible to flash the same G1 Dev Rom onto my Rogers HTC Dream running the newest "perfect" firmware. I would imagine that the HTC one is officially signed so the phone wouldn't have any trouble accepting this...can anyone confirm? I just wanted to make sure before I go ahead and do anything as I'm new to the whole Android thing. Thanks!

You're right. You're definitely an amateur
1) There is *no such thing* as a "G1 Dev". There is an "Android Dev Phone 1" (aka "ADP1"). G1 and ADP1 are both HTC DREAM, as is the thing that was sold by robbers (although the robbers-crippled dream has some minor differences).
2) Though signed, it still won't write onto your phone since it is signed with a DIFFERENT SIGNATURE.
3) If you *did* manage to write it, you would be effectively bricked since the ADP1 kernel won't boot on the robbers-crippled-dream. At this point, it *might* be possible to write the same firmware that you already have on it again to fix the brick, but since nobody has gotten to this stage, it is unknown.
Haha glad I didn't go ahead and do anything stupid, then! Thanks for enlightening me!
Cheers

Don't worry, because of the incorrect signature, you couldn't have hurt it even if you tried.
In approximately a week, I plan on rooting my phone. Unfortunately for now, I must wait for the 2gb kingston microsd that I ordered to arrive.
I have spent numerous weeks browsing xda and other sites to try and understand how to root as I am a newbie in this field. I would like to verify a few things though.
How I will root:
It is assumed that I follow unlockr's fender/1.2 guide that was posted on the 13th of March and use the files listed.
However, a few things boggle me.
First of all, shouldn't I backup the rom with nandroid? or does using a goldcard somehow been I can't do so? I'm not sure of how that works.
Second, my primary intention regarding rooting the phone is so that I may use wifi tethering periodically when I'm at a hotel that charges an arm or a leg for using their internet. A comment on the unlockr site shows that one rooter ran into a "no netfilter found" type error. Considering there is no CM rom for this specific phone yet, what would be the solution to this? Preferably, I assume that android-wifi-tether is the app that I would want to use.
Last of all, under the assumption that mytouch 1.2 users are given the android 2.1 OTA in the future: How would a root phone user get this? I haven't quite understood whether or not android is physically built in or part of the rom itself or separate. Would I either need to somehow find a way of manually upgrading 1.6 to 2.1 at a later time or would I simply swap out the "stock fender rom w/ root access" with a newer version when the time comes? Obviously this confuses me xD
I can't think of any other questions at the moment to ask, but if there is any additional advice anyone can offer: I would be delighted to be informed.
Whatever you do don't follow the instructions from the Unlockr -- I couldn't use my phone for an entire day. I have a Fender and there was a another thread here that I was super helpful. I will see if I can dig it up.

The Unlokr's guide worked perfectly for me. Just because you can't follow instructions doesn't mean other people can't.
The unlockr's guide also worked for me. I had an issue making gold card, but that was because I overlooked something and nothing in regards to the guide.
Follow the directions word for word and you will be fine. It may seem a little intimidating at first but in the end it's not complicated. Took me longer to make the gold card than to get root.
Good luck!

Well it wasn't until I found this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622530
And I downloaded the SAPPIMG 2010 SPL that it worked and before I realized that I needed to reflash the SPL and Radio after flashing ROM (which aren't on that site but in that thread).
From flashing and unlocking in WinMo to this is a learning curve for people that don't troll boards proving how neat-o they are.
From what I had read before, when unlockr made the guide specifically for the 1.2/fender: he had updated the sappimg with the appropriate one. In theory that means the one you mentioned and his should in theory now be the same. correct?
Could i get a second opinion on the part specifically about reflashing spl & radio after flashing rom? As zmattmanz states, "Once it loads click reboot and you are all set!" in the guide does indeed conflict with "reboot into fastboot
back out of update when it asks and flash STOCK radio and SPL back, now reboot".
My question regarding nandroid and OTA had already been answered elsewhere so those two are nullified. However, could I get info on people's attempts to use android-wifi-tether on the rooted fender/1.2 since I'm assuming it doesn't have netfilter?
EDIT: actually after having taken a second glance at the two guides: It looks like unlockr doesn't downgrade but rather just uses the stock radio/spl mid-way through while the xda guide downgrades then requires reverting to stock at the end. right?

Tethering does not work as you mentioned because netfilter is not included with the current kernel. As I currently understand it, HTC is in violation of the GPL for not releasing the kernel from the new MyTouch 3G/1.2 (this meaning tethering would work. I also believe that more custom ROMS would be available when/if HTC releases the new kernel)
As to your edit, just stick with the Unlockr guide. Once you finish flashing the 'Custom Fender w/ Root Access' ROM then you are done. Once you reboot it may take a while for it to load so give it some time.

Cody, is the radio mentioned in your sig the one that unlockr's guide will use end-result? If so, then wouldn't this rom do the trick for getting android-wifi-tether working?
...can't post url! Grr...
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=621578
the problem is that it is a compressed file, when I try to uncompress, it gets me the error message
Ok, I finally got to uncompress, but there was no .nbh file in there.

That ROM is for the Magic 32A, not the Mytouch 32A.

Gotcha. Horrible to hear, but gotcha
The people over at #cyanogenmod said that "wesgarner" is working on a rom that would work with Mytouch 32A. Any idea if that's true?
Hello everyone
I just bought a used HTC Dream G1, before that i had a Blackberry 8310 and before that an HTC TyTN.
The G1 i just got is kinda slow...It's using the cyanogen mod and i wish to install a newer and hopefully faster operating system on it.
I really need help, like step by step help and i am willing to provide any info you might require in helping me.
Thanks ahead, much appreciated
EDIT:
just some info on the phone/operating systen
Android version: 2.2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-cyanogenmod
mod version: cyanogenmod-6.1.0-RC1-DS
build number FRG83
ok sounds good, first thing you need to do is power off your device, than reboot holding the camera+power buttons untill you the 'Bootloader' screen...
On there you will find the provided information we will need to know what the next step is for you
If i dont reply back fast enough and you feel crazy enough to try this on your own, a good place to start is in the guide provided in my signature! Helps you root, un-root and many other things... also may give you a little better understanding of how things work for the device..
anyway, depending on your radio and spl is how we know what you need to do next so get that information for us and im sure we can all help you.

that's all that the screen had to show, there was also an "hboot" button and a <back> FastBoot Mode button.
tried reading about it all a bit, but it seems far too confusing...doesnt seem even remotely similar to how my old hermes used to get flashed...
lol ok, well if thats your phone stats and you say you have cyan running that means you have the minimum rooting done, so your next step is to find out what you would like to do? there are many older roms you can flash that are compatible with your radio/spl.... but they are old...
or you can take the next step and upgrade your radio and spl to flash the latest roms... which kick ass for todays standards of the G1...
basically what you want to do is pick up on step 1 of that guide to flash the 'Danger spl', than continue on with the radio's and hboot files untill your device is at 2.22.28.25 and 1.33.0013d
if you need any help on the proccess let me know, before you cause any harm (bricking) your device... first things first!!! is your g1 a US or UK model?
hmmm...i'm not sure actually, it has a T-Mobile logo on it...
any way for me to check?
uhhhhmmmm im not sure exactly... google? lol i have the US model and it also says tmobile across it... but i dont want to assume you have us, so just check that and let me know... i can help you if its a us model lol
I think i figured out a way to figure it out (that sounded weird)...
Does your phone have a QWERTY keyboard or a QWERTZ keyboard?
Did a little poking around, and since my G1 has a QWERTZ keyboard, i guess it comes from germany and when i did a hard reset to day it reverted to german language, so i'm pretty sure it's german
ooo yup ok thats def not us model lol uhhhmmmm i know with rooting and stuff there are some files on my guide that shouldn't be flashed on your phone... im sure there's many guides out there to help you though... you still want the same goal, which is radio 2825 and spl 0013d, so than you can flash good roms
Thanks for the help
I'll give it a go tomorrow seeing as how it's 4AM right now
k, if you need help let me know
Hello there,
just wanna ask if you have upgraded already your radio and spl? i have the same info on my G1 as yours, im afraid to brick my phone, since i once brick another G1 already
Nah, i haven't done it yet, i'm too scared of bricking the thing. But i'll be sure to post in this topic if i do get the courage to do it.
Damn...i still don't know which rom/other things i'm suppose to use...anyone wanna help?
@jhenards: well, it turns out that i didn't need to update my radio or SPL. I just needed to flash a new ROM on it.
I'll link you to the tutorial i used.
Before you do anything else, make a backup in Titanium Backup so you can just restore your apps later.
Also make one in Nandroid (here's a tutorial for that http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Using_the_Recovery#NANDroid_backups)
Download Cyanogenmod 6.1.0DS ==> http://goo-inside.me/cm/dream_sapphire/stable/update-cm-6.1.0-DS-signed.zip
Download Google Apps (tiny) ==> http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-mdpi-tiny-20101020-signed.zip
Then flash those using this tutorial ==> http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Installing_CyanogenMod_5+#Installing_CyanogenMod_ROM
And after everything is done restore your backups using Titanium Backup and use this tutorial to make your phone very very fast:
http://nctritech.wordpress.com/2010...rmance-no-swap-compcache-or-10mb-hack-needed/
That's how i did it
if you dont upgrade your radio/spl then you should consider either super d or super e, they dont get much better than these with the older combo
also try super csdi and even though lots of people disagree, there are some nice sense roms out there that run pretty fast and stable on the older radio/spl
but if your ready to update there is a ton of awesome roms out there that will bring the g-1 back to life!
good luck!
You should definitely upgrade your radio and spl.it gives you more ram to work with, how can you go wrong with that when all you want is a faster phone. But do take your time with the learning curve

Unfortunately my G1 died...and no, i did not brick it, the phone was running amazingly fast...until some idiot raced through a puddle (read lake) next to me and got both the phone and me soaking wet...so now the phone can't read the microsd (which works perfectly when i plug it into my computer) and it's stuck looping the CM logo...which means it can't boot.
