God do I hate technology sometimes.
Phone was working perfectly, ages ago, I had updated it to JF 1.5, with apps2SD, and everything is working perfectly until today, I restart my phone (not the first time I have done this since last updating my phone), and for some reason it cant go beyond the android flashing screen. Just keeps going.
WTF do I do? I do not want to have to reflash my phone causing me to have to reinstall all my apps, etc. Just too much hassle, I hope it doesnt come to that.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I have tried removing the battery and putting it back, no difference. Maybe I didnt do it for long enough.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated.
wel I thought I may as well reflash with JF 1.5, and have done so, but the phone STILL won't go past the flashing android screen.
Dunno what to do now, I had thought this would definately do the trick.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Use the search bttom.... and WIPE the phone, Wipe the phone and problem solve...
i have almost same problem
except mine goes past android screen then screen goes blank but stays lit up
Don't wipe your phone. Try this first.

Figured i would update this with the knowledge i have gained. Erase the EXT2 / 3 partition then wipe. Load the ROM again and reboot. This should let it pass the boot loop. I had the problem this morning with Drizzy's Hero build and now with JAC's I am running tests with.

I had the same problem so I did what Krazyone suggested in one of the post. And it solved my problem. It's something to do with your EXT partition be corrupted or something.
EDIT: You will have to either reload your apps or restore them from your backup.
Same problem here & tried as you suggested...

I tried that, but phone still wouldn't boot past the android screen. So, will wipe & start anew.
I'm kind of new to the rooting and custom rom thing. I have successfully flashed Fresh Rom 2.1.1 to my phone and I've got A2SD running on it. However, whenever I try to flash a new rom (including flashing Fresh again), it just freezes while booting and sometimes loops.
Before I flash the zip (running Ra recovery 1.5.2), I do a factory wipe and dalvik wipe. Once I flash a rom (I've tried fresh and ic3), it just doesn't work. Does anyone know what the problem is here? I don't know much about A2SD, so I may just be doing something wrong there, but any help would be appreciated.
Some folks say you need to wipe the ext partition, also. Don't know for certain that that is YOUR problem, but if you don't mind reinstalling your apps, it might be worth a try.
The 3.99 invest ment in Titatnium Backup is well worth every dime.
You are going to more than likely have to wipe EXT for every rom you flash, sometimes you will get lucky. If it doesn't boot with in 20 minutes, go wipe EXT. Some times you will have to even repartition the whole card.
Make sure you are not using EXT4 partition when you try other roms, just fresh works with ext4 i think.
I thought Darch's newest worked with ext4 also?
probably. I just know that when i had Ext4 fresh was the only one that worked for me until i removed ext4 and went back to ext3 so i could use damageless rom

Alright, I'm working on this whole donate system with titanium backup now. Waiting on an e-mail or something. (Not really enjoying this method of buying a program very much...)
I'm using an ext3 partition if I remember correctly.

It's the only way he can really lock down the program with a key file.
The market doesn't offer ANY protection for apps that are paid.
This is something Google REALLY needs to do something about if we really are going to attract iPhone devs.
Kind of a PITA but it protects his app.

My keyfile came in the mail. It was kind of difficult understanding what was going on, but now I get the process. It seems very effective, I understand it completely from the developer's perspective.
Now that I've got the backup working, I'm gonna try wiping the ext partition and make sure I can restore it from the backup.
I've been flashing eyballer's OpenGL nightlies (to emmc) for the past few weeks with no problems. However, 20120307 is the last one that successfully flashes for me.
EDIT: I just tried 20120308 and it does flash successfully. Will try 0309 to see if it works now...
EDIT2: Nope, flashing 0309 or 0310 after a successful 0308 flash and test still doesn't work. Everything below still applies. Feck!
0309 and 0310 (I skipped 0308) both produce the following results.
Download the ROM
Verify checksum
Replace services.jar with mateorod's updated services.jar (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508481)
Copy the ROM over to my SD card using TerraCopy which runs a CRC check on the copied file afterward
Reboot into CWM
Wipe cache and davlik cache
Install ROM
Install bootanimation fix zip
Install latest GApps from goo-inside (0304 checksum verified)
Install telephony fix
Reboot
Boot animation starts and runs for maybe 2 minutes
Everything is good to this point, just like it has been for weeks.
Once the animation stops I get the Android is upgrading... message BUT rather than it showing progress of each app updates (x of xxx) it simply says OK and has the spinning wheel. After about 30 seconds OK changes to Wait.
A few seconds later message pops up that says
Text actions
Low on space
Clear default in Home Settings > Applications > Manage applications <-- this is a button I can click which simply closes the message.
I click the message so that it closes and I have a the CM9 lock screen or to the home screen once I've unlocked. Either way I can't determine what it is that it's asking me to clear really...
That same low space message keeps popping up. The menubar and soft buttons do not load, but the App drawer button and search bar are preset at the top. I can open the App drawer and launch various apps that way. All while having the low space message pop up every 10 or 15 seconds OR immediately if I run an app that attempts to look at storage.
EDIT3: It appears that the SD card isn't mounting whenever I'm attempting to run 0309 or 0310. Yet it DOES mount with any nightlie earlier than 0308 as well as stock 1.4.1. It mounts in recovery too. What changed in 0309 going forward??
So here are the things I've tried.
Restored nandroid backup of 20120307. Works just like it always has.
Completely wiped and installed 20120307 fresh, along with 0304 Gapps, bootanimation fix, telephony fix, etc. Worked like a charm.
Repartitioned emmc; trying 5Gb data and 1GB data both to see if that might have an impact on 0309 installing properly. Nope!
I've tried repairing permissions after a 0309 install
I've verified that yes, there IS enough space on internal storage (~450MB of 5GB used)
I've installed 0309 and 0310 without replacing the new services.jar file
I've installed 0309 and 0310 only - no other zips such as GApps, bootanimation fix, etc.
I've booted without my SD card inserted to eliminate it as a potential cause
Completely wiped the Nook and reloaded stock 1.4.1, re-rooted it, flashed CWM and attempted 0309 and 0310. No effin' luck!
I simply can not get any of the new OpenGL builds to flash properly, yet others here are able to and no one else has reported the problem I've been having. The best I can do is to restore 0307 from nandroid backup or to install 0307 fresh.
Anyone have any idea what's going on and/or what I can try next?

It sounds to me like it is asking you to clear the defaults on a specific app, hence telling you to go to applications. I would suspect SystemUI since it is the one crashing. That's why you have no soft buttons. If you can do it look at that app in the settings and see if there is data or defaults that can be cleared.

Thanks for the suggestion. As it stands right now when I go into Apps and attempt to view All, it reboots (to the boot animation, not the boot loader); sometimes before displaying any apps, sometimes after it's loaded the list. In either case any time I attempt to click on anything once I'm viewing Apps, I get a reboot.

I can't tell from your first post. Did you try installing fresh after wiping data? It sounds like something got borked there. I know you lose all settings, but it may be your only solution.

Yes, I've wiped data more times than I can count in the past 2.5 days.
I even went to the extreme of repartitioning my emmc storage - went from 1GB data to 5GB data. Obviously you have to format after repartitioning. I've also restored stock and then re-rooted and flashed everything fresh. This NC has been completely flattened and rebuilt.

Restore a nandoid backup prior to flashing 0309 or 0310? If that's what you're asking, then yes. I've done that multiple times. I can restore my 0307 backup and it runs perfectly. I can wipe data/cache and attempt a fresh install of 0309 or 0310 and it isn't mounting my SD card. My SD card mounts fine with previous CM9 builds, current Mirage 7.2 builds and stock, not-rooted.
I guess the next step is to reformat the SD card.

No, I meant flashing 3/10 right after wiping /data, but my guess is that you tried that. Is mounting the SD the only issue after installing fresh? No systemui crashing?

Yes, I've attempted to flash 0309 fresh after a complete wipe without first restoring a backup and also immediately after coming from 100% stock.
The SD card, which appears to function as it ought to with every other build or ROM, is the only thing I haven't yet worked with. It just doesn't make sense that new builds can't mount it unless something changed in those builds. Then again, no one else is seeing this.
EDIT: Beyond the No space pop-up message that keeps spamming me in 0309 and 0310, there's no messages about crashing at all.

Try 3/10 fresh (w/o the modded services.jar, it is broken on 3/10). It has been significantly updated. Many things changed.
Sorry. I meant to state that I've done both fresh. Yesterday I simply thought that the problem was with the 0309 build. I spent hours working different flashing scenarios. Installed over 0307/fresh/repartioned/restored-to-stock/with services.jar and without it/with GApps and without. I finally gave up and hoped that 0310 would fix whatever was apparently broken with 0309.
I've tried all of the same today with 0310. Just got through creating a backup image of my SD card and am about to flatten it and see if that helps.

Yeah, I read about the services/jar issue and stopped using that both with the 0309 build yesterday and with the 0310 build today.
Well screw me. Wiping data/cache and installing 0310 without anything else - no GApps, not bootanimationfix, nothing - along with a freshly formatted SD card and it still will not flash properly.
I'm so done with nightlies for a while. Back to Mirage.
Thanks for the help, leapinlar.

I'm not sure what you mean "flash properly". You mean it will not install the nightly to emmc?
Meaning that the ROM doesn't run properly as stated in my OP. It does flash successfully... Sorry for the confusion.

I JUST installed the 0310 KANG nightly with OpenGL, and it booted up fine, albeit I had to flash it totally unmodded and with EVERYTHING except /boot wiped. Getting my apps set back up now, its running fine so far.
What is the secret of stability folks? i was a veteran at making mistakes when flashing roms...(i failed day 1 of owning my DSstreak5...sat seemingly dead for a week before i got things going)
Anyway my post is looking for some post detailing what works. And that means those veterans that appear to be able to go further than 48hrs without a hitch. Is it about how much gets wiped i constantly wipe dv and perform both resets. and still boot to problems.
I have mastered Baseband changes and such one of my crucial first issues (currently 366bb via dsc flashme3).
but as of late I am having problems getting reliable operation out of the box on a few roms..dsc and longhorn.
Dsc has been fairly usable...My bread and butter or must have apps are lastfm and somafm.. i must have these functional but ity appears these may be causing issues...they freeze and fc off and on.
Longhorn seems to want to throw process errors right from the start...with 2.9.1 it constantly froze at boot...(is it truely 366 compatible)
anyway thats my rant for now please post your views and tips...while i attempt to try lxdroid...wish me luck!!!
ps does loading/transferring files in ubuntu linux vs windows make any difference in the stability of files or the sd?

You may wanna try an app called SD maid... it looks for unused directories and files and THOROUGHLY will clean up your system
Are you doing factory resets from both StreakMod and Dell recoveries?
When you flash ROM you should flash ROM and do a factory reset... then boot back into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik, flash ROM again, then fix permissions from recovery before booting
Also... every once in a while I like to completely wipe my SD card with diskpart using the clean all command and then let the Streak format it. Once booted and SD formatted, I mount in recovery and copy files back to the SD using the robocopy commands from Windows
I can honestly say that apart from the occasional wifi freeze or hangup I have zero problems with apps on my Streak
Mind you I don't install apps just for the sake of having it or because it was cheap on sale... I run what I need to get done what I need.... I don't use task killers but I do use Autorun Manager to prevent apps from starting and Autokiller Memory Optimizer to help out with memory
Nor do I ever have apps installed to my SD cars
Hope some of that helps

I am going to start easing up on the moving to sd ...things do become a little iffy when i move programs over
Wiping the sd card deserves a fresh look...I do recall once long ago wiping or swaping the sd and getting better results initially.
Maybe some mild corruption is occuring during some file transfers?
I wonder if anyone has noticed more or less issues transfering via the usp vs pulling the sd completely and using a sd adapter/slot?

The streakmod data/factory reset followed by the dell reset is a true staple in my flashing diet...
i have on occassion tried the double flash as well...but just to clarify you are recommending :
1...access Recovery .....streakmod(my recovery of habit) or clockworkmod(not sure of use on the streak5 havent used since gingerstreak)
2...flash ROM "X"
3...do a factory reset........ "dell" or "streakmod" or "both" (i have done a reboot rather than any resets between the second flash)
4...access Recovery
5...wipe cache
6...wipe dalvik cache
7...flash ROM "X" again
8...fix permissions
9...reboot
I will try to add the double flash more as a matter of design than troubleshoot option in future
Hi everyone, sorry to post but I'm at wits end.
I've searched and googled all over for the past week and have found problems similar to mine but none of the fixes have worked.
If this has already been asked I apologise and will remove but here goes:
I rooted my phone and using the latest cwm flashed the rc1 of cm10, this didnt flash properly so I tried again, no joy.
I read around and decided to try with a different recovery, twrp.
So I tried flashing with that, again no joy. so i used twrp to do factory reset and cache wipes. As I was unfamiliar with the layout of twrp I'm under the impression I've deleted or wiped the cache/system and data partitions.
I've since flashed a PIT file to restore the original partitions, gone back to stock tried reflashing new roms. Its been a nightmare.
The issue itself is no recovery can mount the ext-sd which is actually the internal memory and cannot access the cache/log etc.
The phone itself shuts down randomly and then will not boot up.
Adb can't write or push anything to the device either, the strange thing is when the phones working for brief periods of time I can read and write to device memory?so at this point I'm flat out of ideas.
Any help/ideas or advice would be gratefully received, once again thanks guys

Ext sd is your sdcard.Internal memory is the system and data.
The pit file was not needed after you formatted the system. Its only for repartition.
My suggestion is to format system flash stock rom do a factory reset then reboot.

Sorry thats my mistake, I can't mount ext-sd in recovery to format it and nothing can be acessed in cache or cache/logs, hence I thought it was an issue with the partitions. I've tried your suggestion but will try again.
Thankyou

Is your phone booting fine ? I didn't understand your actual problem.I just checked the recovery.Sd-ext is the second partion for the sdcard./external sd is the sdcard.
If cache can't be mounted just format it.

Hi again. Cache can be mounted and formatted but recovery can't access cache/logs. My biggest issue is that the phone will randomly close when under stress and hit a bootloop that can only be cured by attaching the charger. The phone does boot I'm currently running pacman ROM. Tbh I'm fairly certain I wiped something important but flashing stock and even a pit file hasn't corrected it

Weired.Did you try other recoveries ? Unfortunately I don't have any idea of what else you can do.
I've tried cwm, twrp and am currently running philztouch recovery as this seems to be the most stable on my phone, I can mount every directory but sd-ext and it also cant format that directory.
I installed AParted app to it this afternoon during a shortlived moment of clarity, phone not me, and tried fixing partitions/blocks. the only viewable were /dev/block/mmcblk0 and /dev/block/mmcblk1
the former, blk1 had 4 pieces of varying sizes but no registered file system whilst the latter was fat32. Could it be that the unacessable sd-ext is in the wrong file format? I've read for cwm and philz it needs to be ext4 but I may be mistaken.
also the crashing seems to occur when an app or process attempts to write to our unaccesable area and leaves me in a bootloop stating the battery is dead. So weird...
beginning to lose hope of solving this and fixing my buggy phone
Anyone with any ideas/experience please help, I'm willing to try almost anything at this point
thanks again guys
ext-sd?
Have no idea about this, but who cares
Many TWRP and CWM first releases break /data and /cache when you format them in recovery
Only known fix for is to flash a full STOCK rom (sammobile tar.md5) using odin + PIT (the right one, memory wise)
All my last recovery releases fully support all format options on S4
By the way, internal storage = sdcard = /data
Thanks for your quick reply Phil. I've flashed back to stock multiple times using a pit file and the sammobile firmware for my device. No joy unfortunately. And your recovery brings back an error when trying to mount or format sd-ext. I don't know what the issue could be but its crashing my phone near constantly

Hi,
try to fix it tru kies recovery.
Have you tried formating your Ext SD card in a PC? maybe its corrupt?
Also the boot loop you mentioned, only being fixed by attaching a charger sounds like a faulty battery. Is it swollen in the middle?
I would try new SD card and/or battery and see if that helps.
I've tried lies and no joy. The sd-ext is a partition in the internal memory not the external SD card, confusing I know. Battery appears fine. During my reading someone mentioned it may be inaccessible due to it being in the wrong format also that it could've corrupted blocks of memory and the crash occurs when the phone tries to access said block. Any thoughts?

Hhhhmmm have you tried running a e2fsck on the sd-ext block?
Sd-ext is the second partition of the SD card while /external-sd is the primary. If you don't have a second partition that's normal if it can't get mounted.

sd-ext is in external_sd
If that's only error you get, it is not an error, it is normal
Google for sd-ext
ijnegea jessie
Well that clears that issue but still leaves me with the crashes and bootloop.
When I try to flash a ROM via recovery it isn't 100percent successful and it then says it can't access cache and cache/recovery/log even though when the phone is running they are visible so I know they're there. This is driving me to despair now. Thanks for the input guys

Did you try a factory reset with philz recovery ? Technically that should format cache and data with a compatible filesystem
