i am recently deciding whether to part with my cash and buy a xda 2. First of all are they worth it? Also would i be able to use a pay as you go sim card from a samsung v200? which does have gprs as it has o2 active i was just wondering as i do not really want to go to a pay monthly plan
thnaks in advance
How much you paying for it? It will work with the sim you have as long as its an O2 phone, if not you can unlock it for free.
it will probably be £270 unlocked and yes i have a o2 sim card
You won't be able to take advantage of the full internet GPRS, I had no end of trouble trying to connect to MSN and websites outside of 02 active, even after numerous phone calls to 02, they never got this sorted out.
As far as I know, on a pay as you go simcard, you cannot benefit from full internet access with o2.
ye but is'nt there a way of changing the setting or something i heard you can do that to make it go on the internet
well can you plzz tell me so i can decide whether to get one
I have a PAYG vodafone in my xda2. Ive only just got the phone and still havent worked out how to get internet access on it. I downloaded vodafone's 'connect me' software and that buggered my actviesync connection so i had to uninstall it....
I would like to say that yes this is very possible.
I had my old XDA I and XDA II on pay and go with O2 I had full internet and full GPRS though it took alot of time to get the settings but I managed it. the only annoying this is when you send a text it tells you your credit about 5 times. I have now got the XDA IIi and the sim also works with this.
conclusion is that yes it can be done and its not hard either. just change the ISP and work connection
cheers can to share the setting for the xda 2 if you know them as if i get one i might need them trying to get my parents to pay half for my birthday present lol
I paid USD $600 for O2 XDA II 2 months ago.
But it's worth.
I'm using it in programming Pocketpc application, capture Discovery from my PC then copy it to my SD 512 MB and view in PocketPC when go to sleep, listen MP3s, use softwares...
It's a nice XDA man !

There used to be a way, by changing the Proxy settings, but this does not work for newer SIM's.
O2 PAYG SIM's less than 18 months old (I think) can only access WAP via GPRS.
Cost: Expect to pay £200-£250 for a good condition XDA II on Ebay (just got £235 for mine, but some have gone for as little as £180)
well my sim card is from a samsung v200 which was brought new about november 2003 which has gprs on it, but now am not sure although i suppose if it does not work i should be able to pick on up easily from a store somewhere
Anyone have the Voda settings for GPRS/MMS? I'm on O2 and the reception around here is hit and miss, but Voda is always spot-on. I've a PAYG card that's data-enabled, I just need the settings for the XDAII.
i have unlocked my tmobile mda with something called lokiwiz . and i plan on using it under cingular.
i see a lot of people on here talking about ROMs what are those?
do i need to use them too? do i need anything additional to install to my mda?
i need as much info as possible. can anyone help me?

Yes....just read the forum, you will find here as much info as possible
One good tip: Don't play with stuff you know nothing about (I mean Roms), it could brick your device!!
Unlocking the phone will do 2 things;
1 - let you use it on any GSM network but you will need to add the data plan to access GPRS or Edge (the WAN).
2 - Allow you to flash different low level programs onto the device. Think of it this way, on your phone now you can set up an email service on Tmobile but when you move to Cingular that Tmobile program will still be there but useless. Now you can flash a new Rom which has some Cingular specific programs but you have to be careful because if you mess it up, you MDA becomes as they say a brick.
This is a great forum for learning about these things, try some of the simple things like Today screens or phone dialer screens. After a little you take the plunge like this newbie and flash a new rom, overclock it and generally just make it more useable than it is now.
okay i went to the cingular store and showed the guy the phone and he said it can work for regular phone calls and texting, but it wont be able to use the web and AIM, etc.
so when you guys say i have to add the data plan do you mean i gotta install somethin seperate to the phone? or do i gotta add the plan through cingular.
because the guy says i cant use the internet with it, so thats why i ask if i need to downloard somethin separate to the phone
You would expect that the guy behind the counter would know but he's probably clueless about what your asking him.
Cingular's network is GSM just like Tmobile. The data service is called either GPRS, Edge or the next generation 3G & you need to configure the phone to access that. I don't know the access point name for cingular but you should be able to find it some where in this forum, on Tmobile it's wap.voicestream.com. It's analogous to logging onto your wired ISP, you may or may not need a password. Once configured the phone will log you on and then you'll be able to access the net or email etc.
Worse case is you can flash a Cingular specific rom.
wait so how do you configure the phone for edge?
because when i went 2 settings then connections, it had GPRS Setting
I am about to purchase a Mytouch but according to what I have heard, you can't go pass the welcome screen without a data plan. Is that correct ? If it isn't, can anyone tell me how to activate it via Wifi using ADB like the process for G1 ?
Thanks a lot
I had the same problem when i first got my phone because i bought it on craigslist (no contract). If you know anyone that has Tmobile with a data plan u can use their sim card to activate your phone. As long as you get past signing in with google you should be good. Please Root your phone in future to avoid having this problem again.

Thanks for the reply, I thought nobody would answer this ! I knew this, but what I am asking is: How to activate it via adb or something that can be done on G1.
Thanks in advance

Have you tried following the steps outlined here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316
What I gathered from that tutorial is that the 'unlocking' is simply a record added to a database in the phone, which you can get around if you root the phone and manually add it yourself. Haven't tried this though.

Check out this thread if your'e still having trouble. There is a software for rooting your phone. (Relentless rooter plus).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556200
Thanks guys, I really appreciate your replies ! The methods u guys offered are pretty much how to root a magic, means that I must have my phone activated first, lol
Thanks again
First, I do not know how to active the G2 with a SIM, or via Wifi rather than via APN. (I'm trying to do the same thing myself at this time, and still seeking the solution).
BUT... I have found a baby step. I see that when you turn on the phone, it comes up to a starter screen which shows you the green Android, and the two selections, Emergency Dial, and, Change Language. I find that if I click on the "MENU" button, it pops up a tab at the bottom of the screen that says APN. This allows me to change the APN settings. Worthless without SOME data plan, but, it might be helpful to someone trying to use an alternate provider's APN settings (along with a SIM sled / flexible PCB (sold on several sites) behind the SIM to 'unlock' use with an alternative carrier, such as AT&T - easier to borrow an iPhone SIM with a Data plan, as there are more of them). Just a thought.
Just a note, I have already changed my phone from "Donut" to "CupCake", and my goal is to go to "Root". My current HBoot is 1.33.0006 (my phone has the 32B motherboard).
i got past the welcome screen without a data plan. We have 3 mt3g in my house and we all got past the welcome screen.
I just got past the activation screen, but without any magic. The version of firmware I have on my phone (HBOOT-1.33.0006) is likely newer than the one which allowed you to skip authentication without a data plan... I suspect this maneuver / inconvenience was added to the later versions of the firmware for exactly what it tried to require of me - to verify that I am a supposedly new customer, or an existing customer with a 3G data plan.
I was able to activate the phone the first try using my TMobile SIM which has a 5.99 TMobile Web (aka T-Zones) plan on it. That SIM worked for about 1 hour with data access, then MAGICally, the data stopped working, though the phone still worked as a phone.
I read up, and discovered this likely had something to do with the Donut / Cupcake installed on the phone by TMobile. I feel that during the one hour working time, the phone somehow auto-updated something to recognize the level of my SIM / data plan was too low.
Regardless.... I borrowed a co-worker's TMobile SIM - he had NO DATA PLAN... It allowed me to authenticate the G2 via Edge / GPRS / HSDPA. I glean from this that upon receiving an UNKNOWN, but active TMobile SIM card, the phone somehow allows that SIM access to data long enough to activate the phone. But for a SIM the phone has seen before and disabled, the disabled SIM remains disabled for data.
Next step... Root the phone, and swap out the ROM to something that doesn't lock me into requiring another activation via Gmail account (I hear that Hero may be a good ROM...). Crossing my fingers...
NEED HELP - i was reading above hoping that someone would ahve the same issue as me or well to be specific my gf.
She just got a mytouch a few days ago and got it to activate fine and all without having a data plan at all. I tried using her phone and all too and it worked perfectly although today whenever she tries to make a phone call it routes her to tmobile and she can only receive texts and not send them.

Did she pay her cell phone bill?
hello to everyone. I live in Brazil and I am having the same problem. My friend bought a htc mytouch 3g in the United States. Now when I turn it on it is asking activation system. How can I do now? I am in Brazil. Look how that is the mytouch trying to turn it on.

There is in fact no way to activate your plan without a plan. What I did was spend $60 for a single month of the plan, activate the phone, and then cancel it, and it worked fine.
However, if you can find some way to get Cyanogen on your phone, (you can't use the 1-click root application and install the cyanogen recovery image, though without having access to the phone), the newest Cyanogen has a little button to bypass the stupid activation mode, so you'll never need a plan again.
Trust me, it took me 3 months of trying to get it working without a plan.
Edit: Oh, actually if you have a friend with a plan that has a t-mobile phone with internet access (only certain ones work, though, not the sidewinder) you can steal their sim card for a few second and activate it that way.
I bought hd2 from ebay 2 weeks back and it is currently locked with T-mobile. I tried unlocking code from few sites but all returned my money, is there something changed? Can somebody sugest some where can get the code
Thanks

for most new phones now, the networks are the only ones that have the unlock codes.
what you will have to do, is get a free t-mobile pay as you go sim card and put it in the phone. dial 150 and speak to someone in tech support. say to them that your friend had the phone, but has since upgraded and got a new phone, and has given you the hd2, but you have a contract with another network so you need an unlock code for it. there may be a £15-£25 charge for it, but they should supply you with one. you will need either £20 credit or a debit card (they wont take payment from a credit card or any other source) for the payment, a valid email address that you check regulary and the phones imei number (printed on the sticker under the battery or dial *#06#). whatever you do DO NOT mention ebay!! phone networks do not like you buying phones from ebay and may give you some bs excuse as to why they cant give you an unlock code. they should email you the code within 14 working days. they may be able to tell you over the phone or they may post it to you in a letter, so be prepared for that as well
after you have unlocked the phone, you will need to debrand it. to do this, install hspl3 on the phone then install either the generic htc roms (or of you can find it, the rom from the network you are on), or one of the many custom roms available. also have a look at updating the radio rom. then its just a case of getting the operator settings either by opening the comm manager, tapping the data connection icon (the left hand icon next to the words 'data connection') and choosing your network from the list, or contacting your network and asking for the settings. it may be worth updating your connection database (in the connection setup, tap menu>update database>select update the latest settings of all operators>then tap the update database button) this ensures you are using the latest settings and will also add any new networks to the list.
i would avoid 3rd party unlocking sites/shops, as they way to unlock new phones is often related to imei, and the codes cant be generated yet, so the networks are the only option
hope this answers your question
the above process is for the UK btw, not sure if its any different for other countries
got mine unlocked in 25 minutes this morning, mines less thena month old, cost $26, just message blowfish06 on ebay and tell him you want an unlock from the new database, he will bill your paypall and you should be all set by tommarow (or by this morning if its already past 12 were u live), cheers
Thanks for suggestions guys
Ill try ebay guy first if that didn't work then i'll buy the t-mobile prepaid card

if you install any generic rom onto a tmous it will permanently kill it, so although the advice is sound for regular hd2, DO NOT follow that advice if you have a tmous.

Brilliant advice. 30mins for mine and only £5.45. So wish I knew about him 3 weeks ago when I asked T-mobile to unlock my G1. £15 and still waiting.
Never mentioned the new database to him for mine.
Well a friend of myne returned to lithuania for a few days and he gave me his old T-Mobile (HTC Sapphire MyTouch 3G) phone as he didn't need it anymore. But we don't have T-Mobile here and when i try to boot it up it asks me to login with a google account and i can't do anything since no T-Mobile , means no internet connection can't login. I tried fastboot but it says "not allow" adb woun't work since i can't enable debugging , not can i mount the damn sd card.
Is it still possible to do anything with it or should i trash it ?
Don't trash it!!
Get a local SIM with data (just pay as you go), try to find one with data where you pay by the megabyte. Then at the google sign in screen, press menu and enter the apn for your network. You will then be able to sign in.
I'v actually tried two local sims , trying to enter the APN just doesn't let me save
if i press save what i typed just disapear, and it does not let me connect.
Tried hot-swapping the T-Mobile sim that came with the phone to no avail
Funny how people are quick to throw $400 phones away because they cant find a "simple" answer.
You can either find a cell company that uses Tmobiles networks, we have a few here in florida... Or you can get an unlock code through many a website or ebay emailed to you and use it on any company that uses a sim and the same baseband frequencies.... ATT, Virgin mobile etc....
Or you can send it to me to use as a development phone lol J/K ... maybe ;P
We got 3 providers here none of which have anything to do with T-Mobile (2 of which i already tried)
And i can't really find any way (as far as i read) to access it without getting past the google screen and enabling adb
Maybe a gold card would work ? but doesn't hat require enabling "unknown sources"
which again i can't do without getting past the damn google screen :|
(i'm not in USA btw , i'm in Lithuania (small european country))

lol, I know your not in the US. But you do have at least one GSM carrier right? one that uses sim cards? If so, you need to unlock the phone with a code given from ebay or one of the many sites.
Using a gold card is not going to help you. Rooting it would help you get past the sign in screen, but using a gold card can just brick it anyway.
We have 3 carries that use sim cards but none of them worked , tried all of them
all had data plans but apn just doesn't work at all on them
and i'm kind of weary of those unlock codes since i can just pay money and get a bogus code

They arent going to work unless you unlock the phone.
And thats why you dont buy a code from sme random person. You find a respectable seller on ebay or research a site.
I suggest ebay the best because they will email the code to you and give you instructions.
Again, the reason they didnt work is because the phone is locked to only using tmobile.
Once unlocked it can work on any sin card using carrier, but some take some extra settings.
can you guys recommend a good unlock code seller ? is it possible to get it for 10$ or less?
