How can I fix the problem with Gmail app not showing picture on the Desire Rom? for some reason this is happening only on the Desire rom I'm not a developer but if any one can show me the direction on how to fix this I think i can handle
THANKS
Are you positive its just on that that ROM? Because I can't ever see pictures in gmail and my phone isn't rooted.
i'm able to read HTML email on my N1 with the Desire ROM. i manage (e.g., send/receive) my GMail using HTC's Mail application; it's configured as an IMAP account. you should be able to configure as an exchange account should provide push capabilities as well (don't know for sure, tho). i also have GMail setup using the GMail app so i can access the Market; i do not, however, sync email, contacts or calendar.
So I've noticed that both HTC Mail and Gmail are running. Are they both trying to get the same email, or is the HTC Mail app using the Gmail app?

No. I have 3 emails. When I needed to set up the Aria, I used my normal gmail account. That is the one that the gmail icon uses.
I also have another gmail account as well as a Hotmail account. I used those two acounts as additional email accounts on the phone. Those are the accounts that the HTC Mail icon uses. Really, it just means that I now have to have an extra icon on my homescreen..lol
I would imagine they are both independently trying to check your email, assuming you set up HTC mail with your gmail account.

That's exactly what I did. Lame.
You can set up all of your mail accounts to either app. If you decide to use HTC mail in the phone's account settings stop email sync.

So its a known issue that hotmail active sync doesn't work on sense builds.. I found by using the stock email app not htc's you can set up hotmail using the corporate sync settings. here is the apk from vanilla android working great with my hotmail account and mdeejay desire build. just make sure the server is m.hotmail.com. check both boxes bout certificates and make sure you only add @hotmail.com to user name do not remove the /. The domain box should remain blank..

i have been waiting for this for a very long time...thank you!
Absolutely G-R-E-A-T!

Gmail is excellent on Android. Just go into gmail and have it receive your hotmail emails too?
Gmail tells you from which email account each email is and replies from the same account that received the message. Of course as far as i know theres no Gmail widget for emails? (someone tell me if one exists, not that i search specifically for it)

Active sync is for more than just push emails though especially if you have Outlook which many do. And Gsyncit is a pay for app which active sync can do for free in one step. Also if you have lots of folders like I do on my outlook then you can't access these either.
EDIT: I have tonight discovered a solution to my problem of not being able to set up my Hotmail Exchange Active Sync. I have been trying for ages to set this up using the normal HTC email client. It kept reporting it had failed and I should try again later. So I found another email app called Improved Email and tried it with that and what do you know? It works! So now I am synced via Hotmail Exchange and my emails come instantly. In fact they arrive faster on my HD2 than on my home PC running outlook! So it begs the question why can't I set this up on the HTC email client??
Working now in the stock sense email app in EVO 3.70.651.1 Build
Just to confirm - once this is done, we can access our Hotmail via the HTC email app, or do we have to use the stock Android one?
Thanks!

Can you please explain how to get the Gmail app to use a hotmail account? I too like the Gmail app and would rather use it than "email", but when I go to add an account it goes to the "Add a Google Account" screen, with no posibility to do anything other.
Hi

One thing i can not get to sync is the contacts ???
All e-mail and folders and both calanders sync but not the Contacts
i have tried 3 other roms all the same problem
Help
Steve
Sorry to revive this thread but will this work on a HTC Aria? Apparently the Aria also suffers from the same bug that wont allow you to sync your phone with hotmail.
People, i want to know what do u use for Gmail account emails???
Do you use "mail" or "gmail" ???
Well,in mail you can set the synchronosation and retrival timings and frequency.
While using the "gmail" , u cannot set frequency of sync of mails.
Do suggest what is best for Gmail???

Guess it's personal taste, but I myself prefer the Gmail app, since mail notifications appear pretty much the second the mail arrives, and not on the next sync
I prefer gmail app too. There is no synch time, because gmail app have push notification.

I peter the Gmail app as well. Main reason is push notification and send as feature.

I had the same dilemma, HTC mail or gmail....
The gmail app has at least 2 important features missing:
1. There is no pinch to zoom (you can't zoom, this can be very frustrating at times).
2. There is no notification for incoming mail in labels (you only get notified for the main inbox).
For these reasons I finally decided to use k9 mail. It has much more features than the gmail app, supports push as fast if not faster than the gmail app including for labels, and zoom works as well as with HTC mail.
Mail can of course push gmail as well. When setting up an account don't choose googlemail (POP3/IMAP), but set it as Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync using details as described on http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138636&topic=14299
I know it shows how to set it up on Windows Mobile, but you just need to use the same domain etc.
It will then push email just as it arrives to your mailbox. On my DHD it always beeps earlier than notification addon installed on Google Chrome on my PC when email arrives.
I'm using Gmail with all my other emails imported into it, so I only have to check one inbox to read mail from my AOL, MSN, Hotmail, Roadrunner, and of course, Gmail itself. Very nice mail app.
I use Gmail.
Gmail. If only because I can't be bothered setting up anything else.
Gmail. It's painless.
Cheers from my DHD.
mail
Mail (gmail push). just because i use widgets .

The problem with HTC mail is the same as with the gmail app : it doesn't push the labels; so any new mail you have set to go to a label will not get notified (for instance, I get no notification for my alias email that goes to a sub folder aka gmail label).
K9 Mail has solved this problem. It's the only free mail app so complete and it just "works" where the 2 others above fail.
Tbh, I do prefer Gmail but when I got a reply from co pilot I had to reply within their email and I couldn't because it did not allow me to edit via my phone, its a shame really as I needed to send the email whilst I was on the move, but comparing the two, I do prefer the Gmail overall. The normal email has problems syncing and sometimes brings up emails from ages ago which I had forgotten about

I use Mail to sync with my my company's exchange server, mostly for calender and contacts so I know what im meant to be doing, I wont sync my mail unless there is something specific i need.
I still use gmail app for my gmail personal account.
I have found that HTC's exchange sync app really good, other people in the company have samsung androids or stock androids and have difficulties.
I haven't found a way of getting hold of attachments in the Gmail app... You can only view attachments if it's a document type that Gmail can handle.
Hello.
I am using the built in Gmail application and have a problem and a request:
1) When I'm viewing an email in my PC in Gmail site, the app syncs fine and it shows the email as read. Although, when I'm reading an email with a 3rd party app called "Sparrow" which is running by IMAP on my PC then the Gmail app in my device doesn't get updated until a new message arrives, but the Gmail website does update immediately. Can I do something to make the app updated even if I read the email with Sparrow?
2) Is there anyway to mark email as read from the notification bar?
Thank you very much!
Would appreciate some help

The Gmail app uses push so it syncs the phone app and account as soon as you do anything. Other apps using IMAP have to sync back to the server for the changes to become apparent. This is why I use the Gmail app for my Gmail and the stock app for POP3/IMAP email
But what's weird is that the Gmail website does sync with the IMAP app and the Gmail Android app doesn't - until a new message arrive, then it "refreshes" itself and mark the email I read as read.
Can't really offer a suggestions as the Gmail app does what I want it to!
I think it's all fixed, I've updated the IMAP app on my Mac.
Anyway, what about the "mark as read" when I read an email from the notification bar? Any tweak for that?
The new Gmail app has the option to Archive (which also marks it read) but don't know if that'll be of any use. It's fine for me as I can archive an email on my phone and Outlook 2013 still downloads it as a new email as it's the first time an email clients has downloaded it
So when you archive an email in your phone, Outlook just looks at it as a read email?
No, it downloads it as a new email cause I use POP3 in Outlook not IMAP
