I'm nearly at the end of my contract for my T-mobile vario II. It looks like my next phone will either be the X1 or the touch HD. I read a lot of ebooks and web pages so the bigger screen is going to be great.
I like the fact that the X1 has a slide out keyboard and dpad. These should help when writing emails or playing games. However the simpler package of the Touch HD does look very nice.
One thing that sucked about the vario II was the sluggish interface - from the few videos I have watched the HD seems a bit slicker than the X1 - am I right?
If possible I would like to install android on my next device - is this more likely to be possible on the HD?
So what are your views - which is better?
Mercedes or BMW.
Two similar but quite different animals.
Need the keyboard... X1
Need no keyboard .. T' HD
It's simply a choice only. Some point or other.. a HardSPL and cooking of roms will be well underway.. along with a vast choice of rom shape and size, along with inbuilts. The only thing that will not change is the Hardware shape. (guts are the same)
The Touch HD is not even out properly, and the HD manilla is already available and installable on the X1. the Sony panels will no doubt hit the Touch HD.
I have bought 2 X1's..along with an Omnia... Will get a HD also.. but this is because i'm a picky sod.. and have money to pee away.
Please don't tell my wife!.
Well the Touch HD is technically using HTC's "2nd" version of TouchFlo3D, after Diamond/TPro, so understandably they've put some effort into getting it to run more smoothly. SE's panels will debut on the X1 so it's probably buggy just like TouchFlo3D was when the Diamond first came out.
That said, XDA got even the stock Diamond interface running really well, so there's no reason they can't do it with the X1's panels. It's not a question of if but when.
I think if you're going to reading most of the time, the HD will be the better choice (bigger screen, and you dont "need" a hardware keyboard to read). But I must say if you do a fair amount of messaging, a real keyboard is second to none -- there's just no going back after you've used one (imo).
As for Android, only time will tell. My guess is yes for both, but it might not be fully functional for some time. There are just too many unknowns right now for there to be an easy answer.

If you are so flush with cash feel free to mail me one of the X1's!
fhseih - I do read a lot and the physical size of the screen on the touch hd would be very nice for that. However the actual resolution of the X1 is the same so it should be almost as good in that respect. As you say, once you get used to the keyboard you never go back. I have got used to having a keyboard on my vario II. I love the way that you can type without wasting screen space on a virtual keyboard.
Maybe what I really want is a Touch HD Pro - any rumors that we will see one of these soon?

Even though i have capital... and enough to buy a handset i want when i want it on the network i choose to be with.. i am certainly no charity.. so i'm sorry.. if the second x1 goes anywhere its back to supplier... and get a HD instead.
I think getting a Touch HD pro is pointless.. HD is such because its not bulky. Its slim and basically a screen with a send and end key.
Adding a keyboard to it = not a Touch HD Pro but a X1.
Lack of G-sensor on X1 is the thing i think when it comes to using different roms and software. Hardware apart from this and keyb is the same. (except screen size...res is the same)
I think... i will keep one x1 and get a HD...
that way.. i'm covered.
Really wish the DX900 Glofiish had been released... 2 sim cards... one phone with VGA/GPS/WIFI/Bluetooth/3G/HSDPA .. but as yet.. its just due... due .. and due....
who could want more?
The time has come to relegate my trusty Hermes to the nearest bin. This means - upgrade time.
Now, unlike some of you, I do not have the luxury of trying out both of these to make up my mind. So, I'd like to hear some thoughts on those of you who has had to give up their Touch Pro keyboards for the more clumsy Touch HD on-screen text input.
Getting the Touch HD is a no brainer in every way, except one. I can't imagine giving up my sliding keyboard. Yes, I'm currently leaning towards getting the Touch Pro.
Thoughts? rants & raves? and shuttefu%^&up about iphones please.
As an owner of both I say get the HD. I loved my Raphael so dont get me wrong. I do a decent amount of typing and the HD keyboard seems very responsive. If you are doing a ton of typing there is really no substitute for a hard keyboard but the HD isnt far off. Out of the box the HD runs much better than the raphael did but there are plenty of custom ROMs out there that solve this for the raphael so not really an issue. One plus abotu the raphael is that there are tons of customizations but youc an expet that from the HD cookers out there in the coming weeks.
Again, i say get the HD. Its hard ot beat the screen on it and typing is actually pretty easy. I like the power button and volume buttons more on the HD as well. you dont accidently press them the way you will on the raphael. The other buttons on the HD are really nice as well because they do not actually press like the raphael does. It gives a little vibrate when you press them which is a suprisingly great feature. Oh yeah, don forget about the 5mp camera. It takes wonderful pics as long as you are in decent light.
Lastly, everyone that has seen my HD is blown away. When they saw my raphael they mostly said "thats nice, a little too think for me but nice"

WOW the most usefull review of all
thx again, and when my back account allow it , I might buy HD
I've still have my Touch Pro. I opted to buy the Touch HD for one big reason...Screen size bigger than the iPhone on a WM device! I'm tired of dealing with the limited space of a 2.8" screen. I've always been a fan of hardware keyboards, but the Touch HD has a nice virtual keyboard and with a program like gyrator 2 or gsen you can rotate your HD into landscape and stretch out the virtual keyboard for more room.
Also the GPS performance is better on the Touch HD.....the Touch Pro and Diamonds performance is crappy..its lags way too much and takes longer to get a fix. Now the AT&T Fuze may have this solved, but unless you have AT&T and live in the US its not really an option.
I think for any one who has been lusting over the idea of having an iPhone, but would never give up Windows Mobile can now rest at ease.
Just my two cents.
I have also used both, and I can say , on any given day , I would take HD.
HD screen is the best thing and the keyboard is also very good on it.Once , the custom roms comes from the likes of senior people like Dutty , Panosha and others, I am sure the HD will fly like a rocket.
Go for HD. I sold my rapheal already.

Now that you have the HD could you compare the GPS performance with Touch Pro?
Give us numbers.... How many seconds to get a fix and the GPS "lag".

Thank you, all of us will be awaiting for it.
Best regards.
In the last 3 months, I have owned a Diamond, Raphael and an HD. The Diamond came first and was lovely to use but the screen was too small to type effectively. So I bought a Raphael - which i used for work but it was just too thick - it ruins the cut of a suit!
Then along came the HD. The screen is just beautiful. Crucially, it is also large enough to type effectively. Don't get me wrong, it is not as effective as typing on a keyboard (such as on the Raphael) but unless you're doing a lot of typing, that doesn't matter. I still do a reasonable amount of email and the screen keyboard on the HD is large enough to cope.
The HD also runs more responsively than the Diamond or Raph. It doesn't suffer the Raph's GPS lag (I never had lag on the Diamond). And did I mention that screen???!!!
Disappointments with the HD? Not many yet. The camera is unquestionably way too slow and nowhere near as good as, eg, the N95 (which my wife has). The lack of D-Pad takes a bit of getting used to but all it really means is getting used to a different way of working as we're all so used to the DPad. I haven't yet found any software where it causes a major problem.
My final answer? Both my Raph and my Diamond are on ebay right now.
dito
yeah, my tilt and fuze have both sold on Ebay, I like my Touch HD. I am looking forward to using a different onscreen keyboard than the one provided in the stock ROM. I don't like that they wasted space by putting directional buttons on the right hand side. There is one available on a particular ROM downloaded from this site, but i suspect there will be more WVGA keyboards. I used to have a 6600 which had like a 3" screen or something, a wee bit larger than the tilt and that was a really nice phone actually, it just lacked the new juicier hardware. The Touch HD really brings out the sexy in HTC. No overweight short, fat, ugly phone, its tall and sleek and slim and sexy, lol! Just another thought: The Touch Pro can be had for about $500 without a contract and even FREE with a contract if you pull the right strings! However, the Touch HD is nearly $800 and there is no ifs ands or buts about it. You gotta pay for the best and its not really supported by AT&T or the retailers that sell it here in the US and is only barely supported by HTC in US. And, the insurance companies dont know much about it. All this makes for a riskier investment especially considering that some peoples HD vibrate breaks and they have to send it back . (moment of silence please). Yeah its a little scary for me right now. I think I might have it under control! If I were you and I had wee bit of money, I would go for the HD, its what the really cool people have, lol
Just a few thoughts,
Levi
I had a very cherished Tytn II (kaiser) before the recent HD.
I was really excited about the huge screen and higher resolution but the lack of a hard keyboard really put me off. Another huge aspect that put me off was the fract that straight out of the box you cant rotate to landscape mode. I've had my tytn ii in landscape mode permenantly for ever a year now and thats how I like it. The optical layout is very similar to wide screen TVs and monitors. Any how, I found a way to keep it in landscapde mode (look for my thread called landscape view +solved+.
I tried typing in full qwerty and compact qwerty mode in portrait screen but it just wasnt the same (or even close) to a large keyboard. So I resorted to trying to type in landscapde mode using full qwerty and it was just as good as the tytn ii keyboard. Snailslug's wonderful app called touch response made it even better. His app added little vibration feedback (haptic I believe is the term) to touching the screen. So using the virtual keyboard is much more predictable if you can imagine.

I have tested both and I can say, being a Universal Super keyboard user, that HD is almost perfect but the lack of physical keyboard stop me to buy it, a Physical Kb will never be beaten for any fantastic on screen virtual Kb.
So if I had to decide for any of those being the only options I would choose Touch Pro because the Kb, even with that fantastic super screen of the HD.
Or dreaming a little bit I would wait for the upcoming HD touch Pro....
Iphone? Never in my life!!
I've had both on hand: Touch PRO and HD. And now i am really satisfied with HD compared to what I've been with Raphael. I've been considered so much before change from Raph to HD. I'd been with Raph for a month and swapped with many ROMs and radios (only Raphael radio) before making a decision to switch to HD... Beyond all of Raphael's pros is its crappy BATTERY LIFE
It only lasts for a day with full charge on my usage (compared to the same usage with HD). The GPS is so bad, could not fix as fast as my Polaris.
I have to say I'm really disappointed with Raph as I thought it could be another king replaced for the Kaiser...
Go to HD then you will have no regret and waste !
as a TyTN owner.. i thought of getting a raphael.. but looking at them.. they dont have many differences.. ok the vga screen.. the looks etc.. overall though its the exact same device pumped up..
besides.. im a more of a techie gadget guy.. the raphael doesnt come close to the HD from my point of view.. the raphael is a more bussiness man type of device rather the HD is the more
show off device.. get the HD you wont regret it!
cheers!
I too have upgraded from a Kaiser to the Touch HD.
Bit of a no-brainer for me as I found I hardly ever used the slide-out keyboard on the Kaiser. The basic WM keyboard has always been a fast method of entering text for me, particularly with the help of predicitve text and gesture recognition.
Spb Keyboard is meeting my needs for basic text entry on the HD. If I need to do a serious amount of text entry the stylus comes out and I use the standard WM keyboard again. With practise I think this is a pretty fast and accurate way of entering text.
Just in case it hasn't sunk in (!), the screen on the HD is FANTASTIC! Web browsing is excellent. The extra screen space and resolution is also fantastic in Pocket Informant agenda view. And mobile shell is great on the bigger screen.
As someone's said above, lack of D-pad is an issue to start with but only because you have to re-learn how to use your favourite programmes. After a while it's fine.
Setting up haptic feedback is a good thing.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what WinMo developers will do next year to tweak their software for the HD. It's good at the moment but could be more finger-friendly in places. Eg I know the next version of Pocket Informant will be more finger-friendly. Hopefully other developers will head in this direction too.

The original specs showed no support for these bands -- but now????
Are you getting 3G speeds in the US???

HOLY CRAP. . .
This isn't the new HD though, so maybe the HD is still going to be strong for a year(meaning no major updates to it, just internal hardware, like a US 3G antenna).
I dont think we will see an upgrade for the HD till later this year (if at all) but this in most peoples eyes will easily do for a HD with built in keyboard.

That new TPro is still sexy though , but they could have done with out the bezel and all the brushed aluminum(not saying that I don't like).
*sigh* it makes me confused to make a decision between Touch HD and Touch Pro2
Touch Pro2 contains lots of software impovements, espsecially a newer version TF3D,
however, the backplate which coloured in grey really... ugly ('cause I'm a grey-hater)
the Touch HD have a stylish design (in my opinion), but software are just out-dated
and there maybe not have any WM6.5 offical ROM provided, even an update of TF3D
Anyone can help me to make a choice?
My only concern is about the updating of software and any alternative colours of Touch Pro2

The Touch Pro 2 is just too heavy for me, the HD is bad enough...same old story, to keyboard or not to keyboard. The WhiteStone is supposed to be the replacement for the HD. Who knows when it will come. Personally I don't care to upgrade my HD because with these new devices come new roms, YES!

i fully believe that the new TouchFLO will be available to the HD thanks to XDA-DEVELOPERS
and i can't wait, it seems to have some nice additions and tweaks
o and WinMo 6.5 will definitely be available for the HD thanks to XDA-DEVELOPERS (not an official upgrade, but fully awesome)
not impressed
I'm not impressed, i have had three HTC Phones and all have been underpowered due lack of chipset drivers, I will be probably looking towards the omnia HD next, unless HTC decide to shell out the cash for licences for drivers. it winds me up no end that. made I was fooled yet again by HTC into buying one of their half finished handsets.
Its good more XVGA's are coming out as it means more supported apps. Maybe a google version might help us crack the RGB666 issue.
Hardware Keyboard
I sincerely beleive that the HD (aka beast, aka black stone) is currently the ultimate device. Most people who long for a hardware keyboard must have never used the TouchPal. I have done continuous testing and TouchPal allows me and most other people to type considerable faster. I DO RECCOMEND IT for anyone who has not tried it.
I love what I'm seeing with the new ROMs out there and I'm not worried at all that the brilliant minds of this community will bring it to the world best device. Heck, after WM 6.1 was ported to the BlueAngel than everything is possible here!
I love my HD and these new devices can't even hold a candle to it. 3.8 WVGA display, FM Radio, 5MP camera with Autofocus, GPS, front full 2nd VGA camera, 7 hardware buttons, magnetic stylus, expandable memeory via Micro SD (now up to 32GB) all in a form factor the same size as the iPhone! (who can beat that?!)
Only thing the HD's missing is US 3G support, and Video Out, and a capacitve touchscreen.
Damn I love my HD!!!!!

LOL yes many of us agree with you there!
I wonder if there's an exact launch date on this. I'm due for an upgrade soon.
Before getting the HD, I was a happy TyTN II user. Sure I wished for at least VGA and a larger screen but I was content (with the technology back then). But when the super sexy HD came out with WVGA and faster performance I was interested but the lack of keyboard held me back till I found out I could manipulate the screen to horizontal for any "serious typing" since the landscape keyboard was almost the same size in length as the physical keyboard. Now with FingerKeyboard (the black & red) I am completely satisfied. I gained light-weight and thin and able to type.
My next upgrade will be for windows 6.5 and the faster processor and video card!
I think my girlfriend will be pleased
I just pre-ordered the diamond2
expected delivery date: april 10th
I'm gonna be so lucky tonight

My XDA Exec is a couple of years old now and I'm wondering what to replace it with when I need to.
The criteria are:
Minimum 3.5 inch screen
Windows Mobile O/S
Excel, Word and Outlook
A qwerty keyboard, but can be an on-screen one
Quad band phone
Bluetooth
I have done some research and the PDA phones seem to have smaller screens these days apart from the HTC Advantage. What others should I take a look at?
check the Touch HD (blackstone) or wait for the Touch HD Pro (if you want the slide keyboard). It's new, it has a big screen (3.8 WVGA) and it's still a lot smaller than the Uni.

We all Uni users are waiting to get a REAL replacement of our beloved Uni!
I did do a search but didn't find what I was looking for, possibly didn't use the right search criteria.
The Touch HD Pro looks like a contender. I will have to consider that one.

If you are comming from Universal maybe HD is not the best option
As you may know NOT ANY virtual keyboard can be compared with the confortably and speed of a physical one.
Have you saw Touch pro 2? so far is the closest to a "succesor" for our beloved Uni´s
Now that looks very nice!
you should take a look at the xperia x1. it's my chosen successor, but i haven't got is yet.

If I where you I would keep the UNI!
I have had almost all HTC devices that exists, and I can honestly say that the UNI is the best!
Dont even consider the new devices with the qualcom chipset, if you read around this forum you will learn that they have many problems! (Missing drivers, under performing, etc etc...)
The only other device I can recommend is the Samsung Omnia!
But that device only has a on screen keyboard!
Just my 2 cents!

My advice , Go with iPhone
if you are into games & playing with your phone all day long i recomend the iPhone , However i would wait until the iPhone 3GS comes out .
HTC TD2 is nice & more usefull in many ways but not for teenagers i find it a bit boring to be honest even though its a TF3D
Xperia , If i could go back in time i would've bought something else ! its a nice phone & all but its more like " oh-so-fancy oh-so-useless!
i have the Xperia & im facing lots of problems.
im not saying you wont face any problems with the HTC or the iPhone but it sure is going to be much less , especially the keyboard problem most of the Xperia users are facing
AFTER ALL thats what > I < think, & if you are willing to pay +700$ on a phone then wait for more comments.
Goodluck
I would buy this.
Just because my device is very useful and well working machine,
with top display and great hardware&form factor.
It's also small and handy, and has a great feel too.
It depends on whether you need the 3,5 Jack for your headphones. If yes, go for Xperia. If no, go for Touch Pro 2. Forget Touch Diamond and iPhone.
No. I'd rather an iPhone, for it's apps.

hey guys,
I have a quandary between some phones that X1 is included (also TD2 and iphone 3g)
I want to ask you guys, X1 owners, if you were me, would you buy the X1 now? or get TD2 or go away with the iphone 3g?
what would you do in my situation?

If you are an American no, it is 300-500 dollars more expensive brand new than the X1i.
Touch Pro2 International (600 dollars) vs Xperia X1 International (500 dollars) vs Xperia X1 American (900 dollars [you pay 50 dollars tax WTF])
I would say go for Touch Pro2 ... it is easier to type, and set up appointments and all of the business functionalities are more convenient than the X1. However the X1 is a better multimedia device, aside from the speakers being much less loud than the TP2. The X1 has a very simply and very good and gorgeous mp3 player and an MP3 jack and flash LED, and it is what is keeping me from selling it.
BTW... Touch Diamond 2 is a worst choice than the Xperia and I would even rather get an iPhone 3GS over a Touch Diamond.
But don't get Touch Diamond if for business and convenience functionality...iPhone OS does not support automated applications, scheduled applications, or background applications.
THIS IS THE EFFING REASON WHY IPHONE ONLY PLAYS GAMES.
I AM TIRED OF PEOPLE REFERRING THEIR GAMES TO "APPS",
WHEN IN REALITY THEY ARE CALLED MINI-GAMES.
SHAME. ARROGANT BASTARDS.
I have no idea what EXTRA business functionalities TP 2 gives
over X1? Actually TF3D interface is a business usage's contradiction.
And X1 is the only device in the above group having any real and good navigating solutions.
Sometimes it's a REAL pain to NOT to have any scrollwheel or Dpad.
Like in OperaMini in the txt filed, when text exceeds the screen size,
there's no way to navigate through it without keyboard out....

Sigh...
1) I never said TF3D in my post. I never said TF3D was a business interface. I use SPB Diary, and it is amazing if you reserve 90% of the X1 screen to that program.
2) Real good navigation buttons, are you kidding me? Optical Joystick is not very good for scrolling the text cursor for editing documents and the D-Pad is terrible. Besides, the purpose of having a keyboard D-pad instead of the screen is to utilize the full potential of the keyboard.
Think about it. Try writing a document on Microsoft Word on the X1 and the Touch Pro2.
You will learn that you start using the phone in landscape more than in portrait. Why? Because the Touch Pro2 keyboard is very functional: easier to press, FN and CTRL indicators, wider buttons, numbers are separated and not hidden, arrow keys that work better the optical joystick as a D-pad.
Try using the Touch Pro2 for awhile and see if you'd rather spend most of your time in landscape mode, and if you do then you will understand why TP2 has a better button and key design.
I realize that with the X1, 50% of my time I would use the stylus as a text cursor and the optical joystick as a text cursor, and I get frustrated. I'd rather have a real D-pad with a good keyboard for extremely fast typing.

Well if you like the TP 2 keyboard better that's perfectly fine, it's a preference thing.
I'm grateful that SE didn't put the numbers in A LINE since writing numbers in this mode is pain. I love the current design.
As for Dpad you omitted the portrait mode which I also use very often,
so in this mode lack of navigation is A CRAP for me on premium device..
So I personally choose X1 hands down over HTC, also because of camera and media interface.
Regarding my mentioning TF3D - I just didn't get precisely what you wrote about input/business, you just wrote about input (not that HTC is more business than SE).

Well I wouldn't mind a D-Pad on the front, but I would only want if they include these on the front AND the back also:
Windows Key
Ok Key
The guy wrote TD2, not TP2.
So please keep this on topic.

Goodluck

I'm trying to convince him that TD2 isn't worth it. I'd say get the X1 or the alternative: TP2
wait for the Samsung B7610 OmniaPRO
I won't buy a TP2 because its like 150$ more than the phones (iphone ,xperia and TD2) and it has almost the same features of X1 and I prefer the X1.
I can see that you're not recommending me the TD2 ,unlike the reviews that really like it and the people that has it,also I heard less problems of it than xperia.
also I see that only some recommend the iphone ,maybe because its not WM and can't be comutize like it?
I need a stable phone ( I dont want to another year of nightmare [k850]) with the features that I have in my K850 and better web experience and better app like GPS,IM, VOIP and more..
so would you buy the X1? or take the TD2/ iphone 3g?

Well you never explained your situation, you explained your dilemma only.
Well...anyways, which iPhone 3G are you getting? 3GS or 3G?
If you're getting 3GS then get the 3GS
If you're getting 3G then get the Diamond2 instead.
Xperia's keyboard isn't the best and Touch Diamond 2 isn't that much bigger than the X1 at all. Touch Diamond 2 is less buggy, but Xperia has had 2 firmware updates now and that fixed a lot of issues. I really don't see any pros of the Touch Diamond besides that it has a zoom bar, and accelerometer. Everything else can be installed on the Xperia and modded. So instead of Touch Diamond2 get the Xperia X1.
Anyways if I was me, here are my choices:
#1 Xperia X1 or Touch Pro2
#2 iPhone 3GS or Nokia N97 or Samsung Omnia HD [Samsung Omnia HD being the most preferred and the other being equals]
#3 Touch Diamond2
Answer your question
Yes, I would still buy an X1 now. Good business use phone with media functionality. As with all things, it comes down to your priorities.
For me, it was a higher screen resolution within a smaller form factor, a keyboard and 3.5mm headphone (to save on cables, adapters etc when travelling).
I considered the TP2 but didn't want the larger size and the lack of buttons on the front.
Panels / Touch Flo was much lower down in the ranks given you can just visit this site and get anything else you need / want. More than likely, depending on your type of use you'll end up mucking around, do a hard reset and then just add what you need.
If you want to play games first and foremost the X1 isn't the phone. It does them perfectly well, but other phones are more focussed on that.
Good luck, and at least you get a choice in the matter. Why not visit a shop where you can play with them all side by side. Even if you cannot get into the detail, you can at least find the form that you prefer, then search the net for the functionality.
In the end it is up to what you use your phone for. I mean, if you like watching soaps or other movies on your device watch out for a big screen and maybe 3.5mm jack. I don't like Xperia's screen but I love the keyboard. I can type very fast and neat on it.
For me it is also fast enough with it's processor. The camera is okay, well, it is actually more than okay. You got a LED light here as well.
Speaker is weak and so is vibration, but if you do not mind that all you can go for it.
I mean, if you have a good offer, why not?
Let us know what you decide for and if you are satisfied!
what about waiting for the X2 or Rachael?
Because they are not even annonced yet?
I guess the thread starter wants something NOW, otherwise he would not have opened a thread here. Acer builds good smartphones now as well.
There are so many other options: Acer Tempo M900 or like mentioned before Samsung B7610 (what is my favourite at the moment...but I have to stick to my Xperia anyway : ( )
