Cracked glass, not screen, repair? - Touch HD General

Right, as I'm a pillock I 'slept' with my phone listening to music, and during the night I pinged the phone off my bed which caught the edge of my desk leg, hitting the phone on the top right of the phone; pretty much directly above the forward facing camera...
As a result the glass of the screen cracked which means that the phone, touch-screen, and LCD are all fine, but with a nice spider-web of cracked glass on it
I broke it on saturday gone, and thinking that Orange insurance wouldn't be open on a bank holiday weekend, I didn't call in until today (tuesday). Apparently the insurance policy of Orange that I took out only covers damage if you report it within 48 hours, so that won't work. Fortunately Orange said that I could get a replacement for £760 :S
I've seen the bits on ebay that I need, and I have no problem with opening up the phone to fix it myself, but I've had to send the phone back already for it vibrating constantly, and I don't want to eff my warranty 3 months into my contract...
Anyone know the best place to get this fixed for the cheapest price that would keep my warranty intact?
Cheers guys, you've already helped me a great deal (I troll here pretty much everyday )

why not call orange again, saying you did it that morning?? Always worth a try
I've never had a bad experiance with orange insurance!
Jake

I would do but that stinks of insurance fraud... I feel like a criminal as it is, as I couldn't remember the times when the incident occured, and the guy on the phone called me out as I apparently sent messages when I would have noticed that the phone was broken.
Gagh, I'll wait a month, punch it, and then call again
Cheers for your reply

Just call up and say it happened last night.
Theyre a bit funny about certain things.. like it won't cover deliberate carelesness or if alcohol was involved. Your paying for the insurance so make use of it..

Cheers guys, I'll sort it on insurance shortly. Gonna make sure my story is straight first though this time.
Thanks for the information on how to get it repaired, £89.99 ex is quite a lot considering its just a pane of glass. I could get the hacksaw out and take out one of my windows

You need to know that HD can be as fragile as carrying a big wafer biscuit in your pocket
So you need to be extreeeemly careful and there in not even one chance allowed.

48 hours - insurance.
The reason this clase exists is to avoid paying you out if you phone late. The insurance suffers no prejudice is you ring one minute late or one day late or even a month late. So obviously the only reason is to limit claims. This is unfair. If you challenge this clause undr the UCTA legislation you will almost certainly win in the small claims court.

Stronger than you might think
My wife dropped my HD on a concrete floor in a supermarket - without its case - when it was a month old. It went down with a hell of a crack but suffered NO damage whatsoever. Miracle.

Another one bites the dust

Well only had it for 5 day and my misfortune played in, I was sitting in a chair when it slipped out less than 2 feet, thing on my mind was scratches on the body I picked up just looking at body and to my surprise there were no scratches on the body at all, here I was thinking a miracle and turned it around only to find the horror, it must have landed on the screen. Man you would think for $800 bucks the screen would be little stronger, and who would take it out of the pockets every time they sit, riding a subway or bus , it’s like every time you sit ooo let me get my phone out and hold it, this really suck I really like the phone and now to fix it is hell. I called US HTC repair and they said they don’t have the unit in their system so they will call me. Gave me a time frame of 6 to 8 weeks. Well Karma I guess.
Did they give you a price for the replacement screen Magus?
Beards
**** Dude, that really sucks!!
I am so sorry man. Hope they fix it for you ASAP.
No price, as they don’t have the item on their list, I even called UK repair center 16 min hold and rep said no price list either
Well guys a Miracle, just found some OEM Touch Screen Digitizer for HD online they are selling for $85, should I get it, and if yes how hard would it be to do it myself, I have good deal of experience with assembling computers, but worst case I could get the part and walk to a local phone repair shop and ask a pro to change the screen. So should I give this a go? Please advise thanks
Man it’s like I just jumped in time capsule and went back a few day to the time when I got the phone, I’m all so excited now
I am so sorry.
Sorry for your phone.
Because of these things happening, i bought a Belt-clip thingy and put my HD there. Yes i hate keeping my phone in belt, but havng payed as you say $800 for it i might aswell live with a small annoyance.
Agreed that at at this price, screen shoould be more stronger.

Sorry for you man. I had same problem with my Trinity once, nightmare!
Have you got that new screen for $85? Looks like a very good deal. Could you give contacts of seller please?
Yes the warranty will be gone, but I guess none of my PPC or phones ever gave up on me with in the 2 year period so I’ll have to take a chance.
Well the seller is on EBay from Hong Kong. No I have not purchased this item. I was going through some service info so it seems that the manufacture intended the whole bezel/lcd/digitizer all to be changed as a unit, and the guy on eBay is selling just the Digitizer, I’m not sure how this replacement will work out, I guess the touch diamond screen replacement was meant to be the same Bezel/ lcd/digi all together but seems like a lot of people are doing the digitizer only replacement. I could try this out as it seem that the digi is attached to the LCD with glue, so technically I should be able to pull it out and put the new digi in place, or could wait for HTC repair people to work with it but it will be lot more expensive like $360 dollars(got this price from nother member who contacted the HTC repair).
If you guys have any suggestion please let me know. I’m in a dilemma
Drop mine about 4 feet, my little nephew knocks it right out of my hand sending it flying towards a tiled floor, not a single scratch. Then the next day as I pulled up my pants it fell out of my pockets again hitting a tiled floor without a scratch, I try to be more carefull and haven't dropped it since.
Have you tried to get it fixed under warranty, here in the netherland there is this idiot proof warranty which you pay extra to insure your phone from damage done by yourself, like dropping it in the toilet or on a concrete floor, looking at your screen and my track record it might not be such a bad deal on second thought

HTC charging me $75 for the hairline power button crack

Sent to the article author here at XDA this morning along with a few other key addresses.
**********************************
Just wanted to follow up with you. HTC has quoted me $75 to repair a missing camera lens cover due to my phone also having the hairline crack you discuss here. Even though they acknowledge the fact that the hairline crack doesn't affect the camera lens in any way shape or form and also acknowledging that the missing lens (it fell out) is also an obvious warranty issue they are demanding I pay their fee. Also conveniently right after they quote you expedited shipping prices (in my case 15 for overnight since I've been fighting them for 2 weeks on this already) and charge your credit card they decide to finally inform you that it'll take about two weeks to do actually do the 10 minute repair for you.
I've attached a picture the RMA folks at HTC sent me of my "negligent damage." Somehow phones with screens that fall off and USB power ports that fall out of the phone are obvious manufacturers defects but actually pushing the power button (OMG HOW DARE I DO THIS) is abuse and will not be tolerated by the nice folks at HTC.

Wow, that is ****.
Mine is cracked in precisely the same place.
It is B.S. but for some reason both Sprint and HTC refuse to acknowledge the crack as a defect. I think it is ridiculous and deserves a recall. But I don't understand the problem completely. Are they forcing you to pay $90 in order to get your phone back? Or are they just saying that it would cost $90 if you asked them to repair the hairline crack?
I never read the other thread. Does it crack in the middle? Looking at how it is attached (two tiny, flimsy tabs) when I had mine apart...I would expect the tabs to break. It's a crap piece all things considered.
Sent the phone in for a completely unrelated issue. They are saying the crack is evidence that I've abused my phone. I can either pay 75 for them to fix it or 40 for them just to send it back. The additional is shipping.
This company literally has by far the most useless and brain dead phone reps I've ever encountered.
Should have just exchanged it with Sprint.
That is absolutely awful. The cracked power button is a well-known defect of this phone. And the fact that they are nitpicking you is almost a deal-breaker. I'm mad for you.
Twice when I owned a Blackberry I sent my phone in for minor issues. The way it worked is that Sprint overnighted a new phone to me before they looked at mine. I activated the new one so that I wouldn't have to be without phone. Then I sent in the old one. RIM charges something like $75 if they find that the problem doesn't exist and you were just trying to get a shiny new phone. I was never charged the $75. And I was really pushing the policy because there was some tiny flaw in the phone which was why I was returning it.
You shouldn't have to wait this long for a replacement. And you shouldn't have to bicker with them like it's a flea market. We only have these phones for like a year before we move on, and they are wasting your time.

Sprint had no phones and it was a wait for a refurb. Figured this would be a simple in and out repair. My bad thinking HTC has any idea what customer service is.
Ugh. I just noticed my one month old never dropped babied Evo has that be crack right where everyone else's is located. I thought you were all being rough on your phones but I stand corrected. HTC will be getting a call from me.

She must have been trying to get you out of the store as quickly as possible. Not a bad strategy.
get your phone back tell them to F themselves at go ***** at sprint, and wait, I'm pretty sure its not going to kill anyones phone to have a crack in it while you wait for a refurb to come in, HTC is going to send you a refurb anyway most likely.
either way with a refurb your stuck without root, the Evo's roll in for Service and repair replacements every few days.
the longer the better, more time to hope froyo gets rooted lol
Wait, is the button itself cracked, or the trim right around it (on the screen side of the top)?
Its just the trim around it. I really don't see it as anything but a cosmetic issue. There is no "flex" to the plastic and feels as solid as a friends that doesn't have the crack.
I can only feel it with my fingernail.
File a case with the BBB.

I have that too. Mine has been apart a few times, so I can't really *****. I only noticed it because I was scrutinizing the button.
Still my favorite phone ever, and will probably be for the next six months.
Yet when there is a thread about another manufacturer everyone is ready to beat HTC off with both hands while they piss on the other builders. They are no better and their build quality is certainly suspect at best. Don't even get me started on the programming mess.
I've filed formal complaints with the BBB (like anyone cares) and the Florida Division of Consumer Services (might care) along with posting on every forum and facebook page I can find related to HTC as well as carpet bombing their fax numbers.
HTC I know you are reading this.
I'm just getting started.
I promise you I will cost you many many times more than the 75 bucks you've gotten from me.
Making it a point to call twice a day to check on my phone.
They told me it would be 5 to 7 days before it ships.
I'll call twice a day every day and waste as much of their time as I possibly can.
Also got another "we don't care about your problems with HTC" chain letter from Sprint today. In case anyone wondered the "[email protected]" address just takes you to more customer "service" reps though you do get a dedicated employee to ignore you. I like when they say they are "calling from the office of Dan Hesse." It makes me giggle. Chances are good they wouldn't know Dan Hesse if he walked up and punched them in the face.

The truth on sprints new TEP program

ok, I know we already have a topic about sprints tep changes, but as I read through it I was so tired of reading all these assumptions and people stating incorrect things, so to clear it up. Also remember this may not be regional, I don't know how sprint is rolling it out, at least in the south east (im in NC) its all rolled out as of oct 23rd.
First off im a service and repair technician at a corporate store. We rolled this out on the 23rd (at least in the southeast, idk of other areas around the US)
pricing is still the same, 7$ a month. But now it covers almost everything except liquid damage, board damage, lost and stolen.
So if someone comes in with a completely shattered evo screen (as I saw 3 today), if they have TEP we replace it with a brand new screen, if we don't have one we exchange in store, if we don't have one, we order a replacement. Basically we now cover physical damage in store. The only time we don't is if its board damage, say the phone got ran over, obviously the board is destroyed. But as far as cracked screens, broken hinges etc... its all covered.
ALSO now for people that do not have TEP, before if they had physical damage we would charge them 120$ in store for repair, now its only 35$ to repair say a broken screen (good news!), except thats for every visit, sprint is now not authorizing the 1 year manufacturers warranty in store, so say your blackberry trackball pops out and you don't have TEP you can either pay sprint 35$ or go to blackberry. But the nice thing is its 35$ for ALL repairs, except the liquid, board damage etc..
I just felt the need to post this because I was tired of reading incorrect posts. Hopefully this makes sense, because I typed this in minor frustration lol. But I think this is great (for the customer, I see alot of phones now lol) But its REALLLLY putting value in sprints TEP now
So if any questions please ask away.
Thanks for clearing that up. I am switching to Sprint next week so this news has been welcomed.
good post ! tyvm
no problem. I hope this makes sense, I just went on a quick typing rant and haven't really read over it. But I think this REALLY adds value to TEP and makes it worth it. And to the people who said sprints technicians don't know anything they are worthless. Honestly.. Just because your local store may be bad, or not up to par doesn't mean they all are. At my store we try to be as fair as possible, but when someone comes in every 2 weeks for the same problem for the past 5 months, yeah we may refuse to repair, or notate the account for repeat offenders. But at the store and District I work in, we all do the best (also were the number 1 store for customer service in the District so that may help)
If you don't have insruance, does the phone need to be on your phone line? Lets say i have a phone in my cabinet with a broken screen, could i go and get it fixed for 35$?
For $35 I might just take the case off my EVO and let her run around naked!
Thanks for clearing that up! I live in the South east as well. +1
yes we can repair the phone but it has to be on the account, and active for atleast 30 days.
So I know this is off topic but how do technicians treat Evos with hosed 4g keys cause I want to root and pay $7 for insurance but fear hosing my 4g which I use.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Great information, thanks. One question though: what if you do have liquid damage and you pay for TEP? What is the repair cost then? What about lost phones? Also, like already mentioned, what about rooted phones? This is insurance after all and not warranty.
I ask because I have Best Buy Black Tie Protection now' but with these changes to TEP I'm thinking about canceling the Best Buy plan and switching to TEP. Thanks for your info.
what about everyday wear and tear i have scratches from dropping my phone a lot on the bottom of the phone can that be fixed for free?
Is their insurance still through Asurion? I went ten years with never losing or damaging a phone and the one time I lost my HTC touch I was charged $100 for a piece of crap that had a busted speaker and a glitchy looking screen. And to top it off the girl at sprint who looked at my phone said the busted speaker wasn't too bad and that the speaker phone still worked fine...
I am not impressed with Sprint's insurance at all.
ok, well if liquid you go through asurion, 100$. Same for lost or stolen. As far as the 4g queston, not sure what you mean by hosed 4g?
and for the question about cosmetic damage, thats the one thing im not 100% sure about, I will have to get more info on that.
And yeah still through asurion. But now the only time you go through them is if;
liquid damage, lost, stolen, board damage.

Hosed 4G means the RSA keys are damaged and it won't authenticate. Each phone has it's own key, so it's not something that could likely be fixed in store.
Would a phone get replaced under that circumstance?
hmm maybe since im not familiar with the term, But we have seen phones with 4g not connecting or not able to establish a connection and sometimes we have to exchange it (which thats covered), but lately we've been pretty good at restoring data to the devices but a pain in the ass, so exchanging is usually easier
i had a small crack on the top right of my phone (next to front camera) for a month now (a drunk drop getting out of the car)
it wasnt a big deal.
well yesterday i was holding my daughter and was taking my evo out of my pocket......it fell on the tile face down.
i picked it up and my screen was shattered but the phone still works.
anyway i went to sprint today and got a new screen put on my phone for free within 40 minutes. i also have the $7/mo insurance plan
best part is i have a CM6 root/rom on my phone and they didnt say a thing.
i have an 003 version and since the new screen was put on, no more light leakage either
I still don't understand why a customer needs to be charged $35 for warranty work though.
Shattered screen? yes
Defect in phone? no...should be a free repair if it's under the 1 year warranty
Well I know now after reading this Im happy I told Bestbuy to shove their insurance and switched back to Sprints !

Need some opinions on warranty replacement

So, here's my story.
The screen "died" on my Fascinate last Friday (4 days ago). When I took it off charge in the morning (I always charge it overnight), I noticed some discoloration in the center of the screen. Phone was still functional, but I really didn't look into much as I was leaving for work. After about 2 hours, I looked at the phone again and the screen was much worse. It now had an image burned on it and it was getting darker. Touch screen also stopped working about this time. Well, after another hour or two, I couldn't see anything on the screen except for a small bit at the very top of the screen.
I called the Verizon store over lunch and explained what happened, they patched to another tech support guy who had me pull the battery, which helped nothing. So, he put through to overnight me a replacement, which is arriving today. Well, I picked the broken phone this morning which has been powered off all weekend, and when I looked at it in the light I could see the screen underneath is cracked in an arch at the top. I have no idea how it could have happened. I'm very gentle with my phone and have no memory of when such damage could have occurred. This is the first time I noticed it, and you really have to look at it at the right angle to even see it. The glass on top is flawless and the phone shows no other signs of damage.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point. Is Verizon going to notice it and tack the $500 or so onto my bill? Should I call them and explain what happened? I'm pretty sure there's a good chance it will just slip through the cracks when they receive my broken phone, but I guess my conscience is getting the best of me. Anyone have any thoughts on my situation or experienced similar in the past with Verizon?
I'm guessing you have asurion insurance? I believe you can so 2 replacements a year. That being said... You're first replacement came in broken and I wouldn't accept it.

An arch from electrical current? If that's the case maybe call and tell them. Just be sure you don't have water damage.

Definitely no water damage.
Not an arch from electrical current. The crack is in a arch shape. No idea what the cause was. I'm just afraid once I send it back, they are going to see it and claim abuse and charge me for the replacement. If there's a good chance that could happen, I may want to just send the warranty replacement phone back and replace the screen in my broken phone for $100.
If the crack is under the main screen then i would say it will be covered easily. I had a BB Storm where the screen was fine but the digitizer shattered. Vzw store replaced it without a problem.
Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me . AFAIK your phone has a 1 year manufacturer's (Samsung) warranty so Verizon probably won't care to replace it since the replacement cost won't be coming out of their pocket.
"its cracked?" "it wasnt went i sent it. They must have dropped it in shipping" ive been told works with customer service, its not worth their time arguing with you.
One thing with verizon I have noticed it's they really don't have too much of a conscience when it comes to us customers, so why have one with them. Warranty replace it and claim it must have happened during shipment if they notice. doubt they will argue. I know some people misuse the warranty replacement thing, but apparently you aren't. I forgot to replace the official software bacl on one of my storm replacements (there were 11 total and they were all legit) they didnt even notice. Odds are the screen will get replaced and sent off to another customer and they will be none the wiser

I dropped it :(

Hi All,
Being the hilarious guy that I am, I decided that it would be a good idea to jump out and scare the [email protected]#% out of my little sister whilst outside.
Of course she throws her hands up in the air, subsequently knocking the phone out of my hand. Case (led view that doesn't light up anymore) immediately separated from the phone and the screen landed face first on the concrete. Followed shortly by a "that's what you get for scaring me".
Few scratches around the center of the screen but the main issue is the bottom right corner just below the back button. Seems to have taken the brunt of the impact. So missing a chunk with cracks running along and it's already driving me mad.
I'm assuming that some of you may also have creative ways to smash your screens, so what's the best bet with getting this repaired? Any ideas on cost? I'm assuming just a screen replacement.
Cheers!
Funnily enough mine lost a chip and then cracked in exactly the same place - from a drop of less than 2ft Fortunately mine was covered by insurance and I got a replacement phone. In the UK I believe the cost of replacing the glass is in the upper £200s as the screen needs to be replaced as well as the glass because they are bonded together...
I've gotten quotes ranging from $200-$450 .. but not sure where to even begin with finding a reliable source to get the screen replaced. Starting to think this whole curved screen thing was a bad idea.
First phone I've ever accidentally damaged. I'd thought the cost would be around £200 but I've no idea where to look to sort this either. What a pain!

You must have a local mobile repair shop, look in town centres or markets
I recommend UBREAKIFIX..they have lots of stores in the US..the phone is still fairly new and repairs are not supported by many third party companies..I recently got mine changed ..brand new but its quite expensive ($409) but I got the phone back in about 4 days and it's brand new again. Your only other option is calling Samsug directly for repairs if your warranty is active.
cracked my screen too am currently fighting with samsung US to have it fixed, it's crazy they first told me that they can't do it (since it's the international variant not sold in the US, "parts are different and they don't have the right ones" though I doubt the screens are different). Then another said that they should be able to fix it and since then I keep sending them paperwork that they request to see if they even can fix it but they never receive it... A bit frustrating experience...
One option is to sign up for Samsung's phone cover and then send it to them for repair, OR, just have Samsung repair , I think the cost is 275 - i.e. assuming its a US phone, and not an "Out of Region" one - in whic case, you're SoL. I bought mine on Amazon from a seller who advertised "International Warranty" - which I assumed meant global warranty. After dropping my phone and cracking the screen, I found out International meant, sending the phone away internationally to the region it came from. Samsung US refused to repair "out of region". My phone was, of all places, from Egypt - which worked out beautfully for me, had a clleague from Cairo who was going back for vacation. Sent it back wiht him, and got the phone back, as good as new for a US$ equivalent cost of US$284. A massive f**k up, but I paid 700 for the phone, so, still not bad.
Will is still be waterproof after screen replacement, I'm hearing it won't be unless repaired by Samsung themselves.
Get flat screen next time. More easy to repair and cheap to repair.
Like galaxy S7 normal not edge

As far as I know the IP rating comes about by coating internal parts rather than preventing water ingress via sealing, so the phone should still be resilient (note, I didn't use the word 'waterproof' ... before or after a screen replacement).
I don't think Samsung warrant any damage by water anyhow so its a moot point.
Lesson ... don't take it under water!
