Can I upgrade from rc29 to cupcake? - G1 General

Can I by not going through all the other firmwares?

yes rename it to update.zip and home+power and alt+s

A related question: it may be too early but has anyone tried going from the OTA 1.5 to RC29? Any reason why that wouldn't work?

People have been upgrading and downgrading since the birth of time , there are no issues when it comes to this, im assuming by RC29 your wanting to unroot??

That's really what I'm getting at, like say a person gets the OTA 1.5 and wants to root it. They would have the stock SPL. I don't think the stock SPL is a problem as I was running the lucid JF1.42 for a while and just loaded the hard SPL recently before I upgraded to the JF1.5 ADP. Just wondering if new customers and/or unrooted 1.5's will still be able to root their phones by flashing to RC29.
I know some people have unrooted their phones and loaded the OTA 1.5 just to check it out. No one has said if they were able to revert it back to a rooted build yet.

I have to agree. Shouldn't be a problem to upgrade or downgrade no matter what build its on.

The only thing I can think of is the radio. I know it was causing some problems with one of the SPL's, and reflashing to RC29 has nothing to do with that. But I also read that reverting back to the old radio had caused problems, and I don't know if RC29 will boot with the new radio. This is assuming RC29 doesn't have a radio update of its own, I honestly don't know.

Yes you can. I had the RC33 and updated to the CRB17 the UK1.5 cupcake.
I lost myfaves and amazon. I gained a program called "web n walk"(T-Mobile's UK mobile store). Well, after that I received the 1.5 OTA CRB43 update I didn't get myfaves back or amazon. So...I downgraded to the RC29 then to a file called RC29 to RC33 update, finally to the US 1.5 CRB43. Now everything is the way it should be. No problem with the downgrade to RC29. From what I understand if you can get to RC29, everything from there is as it was.
Here's the link. It's about half way down the page in blue.

If you have UK 1.5 and want to update to US 1.5,
you can simply install US 1.5.
No inbetween steps required!

I was able to revert back. I my phone was rooted and before jf made the us 1.5 rom I went back to original spl and rc29 just to install the US Tmo OTA update. And earlier this morning I just went back to rc29 to reroot so I could update to jf's 1.51us.
I didn't go straight from rc29, I at least flashed JF's rc33 before going to JF's 1.51-US.

Yes you are correct... but you get the US cupcake with the UK web n walk and no amazon. The other needs to be done to change it all back.

Wouldn't it be safe to flash any rom, if you have the recovery on an already rooted phone? That way you can just restore from a nandroid or BART backup if it doesn't work?

Full Revert from DamageControl2.0

I'm looking to root and flash my Hero to DamageControl 2.0, but has anyone successfully restored the device back to factory defaults after flashing to DC2.0?
You have to use either Sprint 1.29 RUU or Fresh's 1.56 RUU. That will make it stock again.

Some people do, and some don't. There is a fix if you brick it while RUUing. However if you are wanted to go back to stock for the 2.1 "official" release you might not be able to root again. They seem to leave the door open on the first round of software, but then close the hole on the next round. Seems the case for every phone
So the ability to root maybe lost if I was to update to a "official" release. Hmm... okay, good to know. Thanks.

Yea give it like 24 hours after the release, someone will do a nand dump, root it and post it on here. One thing I would reccomend people stay away from would be a new version of an RUU based off of 2.1, as that would put you up a **** creek if a root isn't found. I hear lots of problems trying to .29 RUU after a .56 RUU, I'm sure the same will be said for whatever the next version is.

They may, or may not close the exploit that was found in 1.5 but if so it will only be a matter of time before some of these guys who are far more talented than I find a way to root 2.1, 1.5 was not rootable when it was released. Regardless the 2.1's you will see later today will be far superior to whatever sprint ends up releasing.
You should be able to RUU without any issues. However, you might still not be able to see protected apps in the market. I used the steps in this thread to fix that:

This fix didn't work for me, however I was able to RUU, update to DamageControl 1.0, download some protected apps, and then upgrade to DC2.0r2 (without wiping between DC1 and DC2). This opened up protected apps and solved the black on black contact problem for me.
-obviously do so at your own risk and all-

Speaking of this, I am currently rooted, but running stock 1.5(don't ask)will I still be able to get the update or do I have to be completely unrooted to do so!
Also as far as the update is concerned, I know on the droid forums there were instructions on saving the update before installation so all could get it! What is the procedure for doing so!
It seems with the current state of affairs the update could come in a minute or a day or a month, basically no one know, so it could be anytime, so I just wanna be prepared for when it drop to hand it off to the real DEV.!
Roman
Eh, you could go ahead and flash a new ROM right now if you want. A fix was found for people getting bricked from the RUU, so you're safe to use the RUU now without fear of having a permanent brick on your hands.

Good question

Devs Need Help - Look if your new phone has 2.1

All,
We have noticed an alarming number of people coming to the IRC channel with "new" phones from Asurion (the insurance company) that have 2.1 OTA and a 1.49 bootloader.
We need to know if new phones from a Verizon store that comes with 2.1 have a 1.49 bootloader or not.
So, if you have a new phone, before rooting please do the following and report your findings:
Reboot your phone and hold down power + volume down. When you are presented with the HBOOT menu, tell me what the version number is at the top (should be 1.47.00 or 1.49.00 or similar).
i just got a new eris from the verizon store monday with 1.5
bootloader 1.47.00
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
I got my eris from the verizon store. It was a replacement phone and it had the 1.47 boot loader on it, this as a week ago. Ya it was only in its virgin 1.5 state for as long as it took to drive the phone to my house.

Also, my Eris says its 1.49 but its rooted. It came to me with 1.5, not sure if its been 1.49 the whole time but it is now and I've never done leaks or ota.

I just received a Verizon Eris:
This phone shipped with HBOOT 1.49
Baseband 2.42.00.04.12
Build 2.36.605.1CL165907 release-keys
It is a new phone, ordered through our business sales rep.
I am new to this phone (Coming from WimMo land). My guess is that I cannot root the phone. What is likely to happen if i try?
you can root.
Got my refurb last week, now rooted.
HBOOT 1.49.2000
I have been rooted since we found root. I leaked on my original phone but Verizon sent me a new phone in the mail because they didnt have any in stock.
HBOOT-1.49.2000 S-OFF
Jan 24 2010
I have never updated the bootloader... unless the root rom updated it..

FALSE.
Sorry , goedls, you can't root.
Here's the go down.
Users who ran 1.5 and got the 2.1 OTA DID NOT get a bootloader update, so using the old bootloader, you can go to the root rom which runs .49 S-OFF (Engineering SPL)
Both the leaks and root roms have .49 BUT the root rom has older system information, so installing it from a leak rom which has newer system information, you will not be able to use it to root.
If your phone comes with a new bootloader, chances are, you cannot root.
There is a difference between the bootloaders:
2.1 Root ROM-> .49 S-OFF
2.1 Leaked Roms-> .49
Strongly suggests that VZW is flashing the so-called "leak" v3 onto phones, doesn't it ?

Not necessarily but I see what you're saying.
Supposedly, the RUU coming out for this update flashes this new bootloader.
delete....
To be honest, I can't believe for a second that VZW is going to unbox all the phones they have in stock to update the software. Of course, if the phone is still on 1.5, it doesn't match what I presume VZW is advertising as features of the Eris (presuming they talk about 2.1 features).
I should be receiving a replacement later today, I'll check back in.

Thanks for clearing that up, Framework. My (second/last) Eris has .49 but it's 1.49.2000 (PB00100 XC ENG S-OFF).

My Verizon refurb replacement came with 1.5 and hboot 1.47. I just rooted successfully.

I rooted, but then unrooted. Will I be able to get the update still?

I rooted my phone a while back using the Unlockr guide, but decided I just wanted to go back to unrooted for whatever reason.
I doubt I'm able to get any updates OTA now, though. Is there a way to get my Legend back to just vanilla stock, as if it were delivered to me straight from HTC themselves?
Thanks,
Steve
Whether or not you are able to get OTA updates depends on the ROM you are running. If you check for OTA updates through ROM Manager on a stock ROM it will tell you the ROM doesn't support OTA for example (in most cases).
Going back to a stock ROM is easy. Get a hold of one and just run the RUU with your device connected to USB and everything will go smooth.
Hmm... just tried the RUU.
I kept getting a USB 171 error :-(

I believe HTC pulled the original OTA update from 1.31.405.5 to 2.05.405.2 as it caused numerous problems... This was before I had a Legend, but there is currently no way to get to 2.05.405.2 at all - so they must have pulled it for a reason! Not sure when the 2.03.405.3 RUU was made available, but I'm also running that one - no idea why there is no OTA for it
Really not sure which WWE ROMS are going to get OTA updates at this point - many people never got an OTA update from 1.31.405.5 because they didn't release 2.05.405.2 everywhere. So we've got many unbranded users all over the world - some are on 1.31.405.5, some on 2.03.405.3 and some on 2.05.405.2

[Q] MyTouch 3G 32B Offical Froyo OTA ROM

Hi I have noticed that there are mytouch 3g's already updating over the air with froyo 2.2.1. My question is that is there an official rom that i can flash without updating from 1.5 > 1.6 > 2.2.1.
Thanks.
The official OTA update is a multi-part update anyway. But step 1 of 3 in the official OTA updates hboot, not sure if the next step requires 1.6 or just that particular hboot. Maybe someone can comment, or eventually I'm sure there will be official re-cooked roms to help.
Personally, I followed the instructions at the below thread and it worked like a charm, my girl is happy her mytouch3g has Froyo before the official download. That was a 32b already on 1.6, fyi.
