I live in Japan and bought a G1 Dev 1.0(firmware ver 1.0) phone off a friend of mine. The issue I'm having is I cant buy apps of of the Market.
I found the reasons for this on the internet and of course some information on this forum on how to update the firmware on my phone.. Only issue is, I have no idea how to use linux or how to update the phone. I'm also worried about not being able to use the phone over here if I update it.
I would have no problems getting rid of the Dev/root feature of the phone.. but I kind of want to keep it just because it came with the phone and just in case I decide to sell it, it would be nice to keep that feature.
So pretty much what I'm looking for is information on how to update my phone and if the update will mess up my ability to use the phone here in japan.
Have a look on this thread mate, the first post tells you everything you need to know and if you have a frther look around the Dream android development section youll find out about the latest ROMs that you can update to.
Welcome to the Forum
Thanks for the welcome...
Im not sure what thread your talking about with that link, since all the threads have moved around.
These are the two threads that I found in my search...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443041
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443713
The one has the ModRC30 update.. I understand that thread. download the file, rename it, put it on your phone.
its the " modified recovery image" that im having issues understanding. Im pretty much lost on that whole page.
And those steps even necessary for what I need to do?
So do you have root already? You will need to find out EXACTLY which version you are using. Go to Settings--> About Phone--> What is your Firmware, baseband, kernel, and build numbers.
You will also want to Start here---> (READ EVERYTHING and take it one step at a time)

I would take a screen shot of my phone, but I just looked up how to do that.. lol looks just as hard as updating the firmware..
My Model number is Android Dev Phone 1
Firmware version is 1.0
Baseband version is 62.33.20.08H_1.22.12.29
Kernel version is 2.6.25-01843-gfea26b0 [email protected] #6
Build number is dream_devphone-userbug 1.0 UNLOCKED 116222 test-keys
I held down the camera and pwr buttons to turn the phone on. a white screen with 3 android guys on skateboards at the bottom came up. it has some stuff at the top and says "serial0" in the middle of the screen.

OK... well go to the link I sent you then to root your phone. You have the stock ADP software.
ok.. on "Rooting your RC29 or lower phone:"
im suck on step 5.. where it says to hit enter twice and then type "telnetd". when I do this it opens up "contacts" and searches my contacts list.
ok.. ignore my last. lol.. brain fart.
ok. now I cant telnet in. downloaded telnet off of the Market. when I run it, I get localhost in the address box and 23 in the next one. hit "connect to server" and get "Error while trying to connect to server: localhost/127.0.0.1:23- connection refused".
Ive restarted the phone a few times, redid the "hit enter twice and type "telnetd""..
am I dont something wrong?

Can't recall if you actually need to connect of just turn it on. Hmm... Been so long since I had to actually root my phone. I want to say it creates a folder when you first connect to a WIFI connection (and if so, should be able to be replicated manually)?
Hopefully someone else will chime in
tried turning it on and same thing.
also.. after I type "telnetd" and hit enter again, should something happen? mine just sits there in the contacts screen.

Nope, nothing that you can "see" will happen. It just starts the service in th background. Have you gone into Telnet after powering up your WIFI?
Yea, I turned WIFI on and tried to connect to localhost and still get that error.
ok.. i ended up using a terminal emulator to get to root and entered in what Koush said to. followed the rest of the steps and it looks like I'm now running RC33
Firmware Version: 1.1
Baseband Version: 62.33.20.08H_1.22.12.29
Kernel Version: 2.6.25-01843-gfea26b0 [email protected] #1
Build Number: kila-user 1.1 PLAT-RC33 126986 ota-rel-keys,release-keys
But I still cant seem to buy apps off of Market.. all I see are FREE apps still. Any reason why I cant buy apps?

Dumb question but is your phone in an area where you have a signal? Also does your sim work that you put in the phone?
yes ive put my card in my dads g1 no problems put his card in mine....same thing im having trouble his....its the phone not the coverage i can garuntee you that
same thing im having trouble with*
Since you did a factory reset lets try something different. Load up the DREAIMG.nbh (RC29) file and see if it does the same thing.
tried that it loaded....still doing the same thing....had to try a few times but it finally loaded up....the webpage i posted i tried several different versions they have up but every time it came up and said something along the lines of invalid signature then (xx files) then gave me the same prompt of alt w alt s alt l home back to reboot.....thought maybe there was something there....not sure......

Well it sounds like you tryin to load it in recovery menu. You need to load it in bootloader (cam and power).
i thought the bootloader only read the nbh files on the sd? and not the update.zip am i mistaken? because if i dont have one on there it will just wipe out what i do have on it now correct?

The RC29 file is the .nbh file. So if you downloaded the RC29 and it's in a .zip file you need to unzip that. RC29 should not be loaded as an update.zip.
sorry my misunderstanding i have already loaded the rc file pretty sure it was 30 im not trying to root though im just trying to figure out if its software related or hardware related im pretty sure its software just having a problem figuring out what piece of software because i reloaded the rc file and now im trying to update the radio and that jazz and not having any luck....do you have a link for a stable rc29?? i wouldnt mind rooting it after i figure this problem out i downloaded a few but they would fail every time thats why i went with 30

Try that and see if it might help.
If you have no data...then your gonna have to do half the steps to root anyway....

Before you root, make sure you have APN configured properly. On the screen where you enter your google account login info press Menu and select "APN". Make sure it's set up properly for your carrier, and then Save and try again.
Okay, i know that all the files and answers are in here somewhere, but they're strewn across dozens of posts and I can't figure out the exact process i'm supposed to use. here's the scoop:
i have an a500 (obviously) running:
android 3.0.1
kernel 2.6.36.3-00001-gf991e5d
build number Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1
Flex version 05_COM_GEN1
device info version 1.0
if its important, the laptop it connects to run win7 home premium 64.
I rooted my device and nuked a bunch of crapware. now when i try to update it fails. the cache log says its failing because acersynchelper.apk is not there, but there will be several files missing.
I think what i need is either 1) the stock build for my version or 2) the stock updated build, and instructions on how to make the whole thing work. i have terminal emulator and i installed a bunch of Android SDK and Java SDK on my laptop while i was trying to follow the instructions on this site, but i couldn't figure out what the straight line to fixed is. any help would be great. and its my first post, so maybe keep the calling me an idiot thing to a minimum...
some is okay, of course. thanks in advance!
Plug in a USB keyboard, then boot up the tab by holding the power button and volume down (the side closest to the power button) at the same time until text starts appearing in the upper left corner of the screen. Hit the home button on the keyboard, and boom! You are in a recovery screen. Use the keyboard to select factory reset, and your tab is back to the original state.
well, that returned me to stock in that it wiped everything i've installed, but i still have root and i'm still missing the necessary .apks to pass the pre-update check. its still erroring on acersynchelper.apk
Hmmmm when I did it, it returned me to stock, and I checked it and had no root, had to re-root. Anyone else want to chime in?
A good idea might be to post a .zip with all the apps from various versions so people like me who deleted instead of renaming can fix their issues. Rest assured, i won't be making that mistake again.
So after doing some edits and removing the AT&T bloatware the phone stopped wanting to allow me to add apps. Even though I had 20MB free. My phone now reboots when I put the SD card in.
So I decided to do a factory reset which worked fine but now I'm stuck on the first screen of the android set up. now the screen is just black with the taskbar at the top and the words "setup" right below it but no android icon in the center, and the emergency button is absent on the bottom.
I googled and found out that if you touch the 4 corners in a clockwise pattern this is suppose to bypass the setup and just go straight to your home screen. well this is a no-go.
The phone receives call fine and the screen is responsive when I slide the taskbar down. also when I plug it into my comp the motosuite boots up and works fine as well.
So any suggestions on how to get past this or how I can just reflash the phone?
It sounds like you don't have a launcher...
How to fix... i'm not so sure...
Maybe a forum search?

Cant you just go to android market on your computer and send a launcher to your phone that way? It automatically installs for you and if you are able to open the notification bar you should then be able to launch it to make it your default. Hope this helps.

The issue is i'm stuck on the very first screen of the phone. you know when you first power one up for the first time and set up gmail and everything else. well mins is stuck on the first screen so i can't get to market to download it.
If it is stuck on the setup it doesn't sound like a launcher problem. I can get the launcher off my phone if you want it but I know after I did a NON SBF update (using android recovery) mine got stuck on the MotoBlur setup and would freeze at 95% or so no matter if it was signing into my old account or creating a new one. I had to do an SBF flash for it to work. Not sure what the problem was but using update.zip looked like it was fine but it screws something up in it.

I'd gladly flash it again, but the snare is I don't have debugging mode on and with that black screen I can't get to it. I even hunted for Hotkeys to get into settings. So any possibility to get the phone into debugging mode without going through settings?

You can follow this guide located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17042497
Flipside Bootloader Mode - Restore with SBF File
To put the Flipside into bootloader mode:
Open the keyboard
Press and hold the up arrow key (to the left of the OK key)
Hold the power button down
Release both buttons after about 4 seconds
You should see a display that says:
Bootloader
91.2B (If you already went to Froyo then this number is going to be like 91.7 I think)
Battery Ok
OK to Program
Connect to USB
Data Cable
This mode is for flashing an sbf file (ROM) to your phone using RSDLite.
RSD Lite version 4.9 works with the Flipside
I have received info from a reliable source that downgrading the Flipside from the not-yet-released Froyo upgrade using the available SBF files will brick your AT&T phone.
I do not have personal knowledge of this, but I trust my source.

Then just download the SBF listed on that post. Let me know if you are confused. I've done this about 3 times now on my phone. I keep screwing around with it and reflashing it.

Thanks, I'll try that again, I've actually already tried that but RS lite doesn't seem to read my phone. but I had that issue before and I know I have to use and older version instead of 4.9. Hopefully it'll work
Thats odd. I know I just bought our phones but they came with 2.1 and it worked just fine with it. I've upped to froyo now but I never had problems. Only had problems doing the update and doing a factory reset. After doing them I needed to do the SBF. Only thing that fixed mine.
Ok I have it fixed now. I tried a few different version of RS lite. and it just wouldn't read the phone even though the phone would read the comp.
Solution: run friggin RS Lite in Compatibility mode with XP SP3. worked fine.
So the phone is up and running again, but for some reason now everytime I put my 16GB sd card in it, the phone will reboot. I'm going to format the card as FAT and see if that solves it.
Cool. Glad you got it working. Now we just need some cyanogenmod love for our phones

Tab boots to "welcome" screen but does not register touches, leaving me unable to move forward. Ready for the long story?
I am helping a friend who bought this tab from a third party. When he received it, the previous owner stated that they did a factory reset back to Honeycomb but he noticed that it did in fact still have ICS on it. Probably OTA'd when the previous owner did the reset. Tab worked fine for about two weeks until one day he came home and the lockscreen would not register touches. That's where I come in.
I did the "erase, wipe" (booting while switching the screen rotation back and forth.) Tab wiped and brought me to the "Welcome" screen where you select country and language and still does not register touches. I have tried blackthund3r's flash and manager tools, as well as multiple guides to recover from what I have seen referred to as "flu." The main problem I have is that I cannot get a valid UID. Using USBDeview gives me an 11 digit serial but it returns as invalid when plugged into DotNetDetector and I am unable to use SDB because the non working touchscreen has left me unable to enable USB debugging.
Any suggestions, help, advice, on things I can try? I am really stumped and would like to help my friend/conquer this problem. Thanks for anyone who has taken the time to read this/offer help.

Get ready for some Ubuntu... Here is the guide that will get you a valid sbk. My nephew just brought his tab to me after forgetting his password. So I was in the same boat as far as UID/SBK. This is gonna take a while so put some time aside.

As sure as I am reading yoru reply the damn thing just started working. I was able to get to USB debugging and via ADB I was able to pull the UID; which was the same as the one I got from USBDeview btw. Still an 11 digit code. The only thing I can guess is that it has a faulty touchscreen, or maybe the battery was just too low to register touches? Thanks for your reply though. Always nice to be able to rely on the folks at XDA.
That is too cool. The other way is a learning experience to be sure. Enjoy.

I have now realized that the touchscreen does work but is very glitchy and have found that lots of people have had problems with the OTA ICS update. Any suggestions on a good custom ROM for this tab? It isn't mine so I have not been following this section. Would like something close to stock ICS but with fixes that resolve the problems associated with OTA.

First check in Settings>About Tablet>Build Version - this will tell you what rom you are currently running -
Then, if you can, download and install Acer Recovery Installer
This tells you what bootloader and recovery is installed.
The glitches you speak of and the 11 digit uid point to an ICS Rom and unpatched HC bootloader - updating to the new BL often fixes these weird glitches BUT if you flash a custom rom as well, you'll be running sweet!!!
If you wanna stay close to Stock then I'd recommend ezterrys one here comes pre-rooted and busy box installed - and if you want to you can install his Over clocked kernel too.... plus its well maintained and supported
there are many tools and guides around to help you...the ones in my sig for instance the cpuid one has a lot of general info in it too re bootloaders, sbk and flash tools.
If you have any q just ask, there's always someone round willing to help...good luck!!
Hello everyone! My names Danny, sorry I'm extremely frustrated at the moment and apologize for not introducing myself properly in what ever you call your newcomer section here, but I'm ripping my hair out at the moment.
So last night for the 4th time I tried to root my Galaxy S4, again unsuccessfully. While I admit I am no programmer, computer whiz, or rocket scientist, I have previously rooted my old S3 and my girlfriend's Moto Photon successfully in the past, on the 1st try (although they were pretty simple 1 click roots no more difficult than the one I used here, or so I thought.) Now last night I tried to use the CF-Autoroot again for the 3rd time, which i figured after the first 2 attempts was doomed to failure also. This may be due to the fact that I updated it, but I don't know. I'm hoping someone here can point me in the direction of a root that will work with my phone, show me where I may have went wrong in the install,or give some instruction on how to delete the update so I can use the CF-Autoroot. As long as my phone will still function as normal, I could care less which option is used, however I do not have any programming experience whatsoever, so a simpler root would be excellent. I'll give you all the info I can below.
Software version: L720VPUAMF9
Hardware version: L720.08
Model #: SPH-L720
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: L720PUAMF9
Kernal version: 3.4.0-953334
[email protected] # 1
Tue Jun 25 09:36:29 KST 2013
Build #: JDQ39.L720VPUAMF9
SE Linux Status: Permissive
Secure boot status: Type: Samsung
Device Status: Custom (No Triangle Away quite yet, as I'm not sure if it is yet supported on the S4, or if I even need it since I plan on keeping the phone)
Root was done on HP Windows 7 laptop 64-bit, with the phone in camera mode prior to turning off and going into download mode.
I followed the instructions on honai-android.blogspot(dotcom) using CF-Autoroot and Odin V3.07 to the T, except I have yet to get the drivers to install correctly (or so it tells me, everything works fine,) and in Step 4 it says the box should turn yellow and a port number displays, but in my case did not. It did display the "Added" message in the little box like it should have, but it did go through the whole process and I got a PASS notification as it says I should have. I have no idea why it won't work, other than maybe the drivers are screwing me. Ran Root Checker and it tells me "Please wait for Root Check to complete. System appears to be running very slow," and Titanium Backup won't work either. Root checker stayed like this all night last night while I slept.
Also I would appreciate some help reverting it back from the root I apparently didn't install, although I know some of it went through, or Root Checker would just say I didn't have superuser access.
I'm hoping one of you guys here might be able to help me out with this problem, and I greatly appreciate any help I can get. If anymore information is needed, just ask. Much thanks in advance.
You said you used Odin in camera mode? Did you mean download mode? I didn't have to install any drivers to get Odin to work. If you didn't get a yellow box with a com number in it the Odin didn't write anything to your phone. If you look here in the dev section there is a thread titled cf auto root. Download the zip file there and follow those directions and give it another try.

No my S4 was in camera mode. There are 2 options when I plug my phone in via USB to the PC, either camera mode or media device mode, PTP and MTP respectively. This is how it was set up before I turned the phone off to go into download mode, didn't think it made a difference, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. The phone went through all the downloading stuff on-screen with the red pirate android guy and everything while Odin was downloading to the phone, and Odin also said Added in the message box so I figure Odin recognized the device was present. I'll check out that thread though, thank you:good: I'll be back here if it doesn't rectify the situation.
I see my first problem, stupid tutorial I used the first time said to put Odin in Repartition and F-Reboot. QBKing says only Autoreboot. Man I hate crappily done tutorials.
Just also noticed he mentions the yellow box and com/port number are vital to the success of the root, something I overlooked all 3 times I tried it.
Stuck at the stupid com box again, now it wont change at all and i'm not getting the added message either....
Downloaded the drivers for the phone he gave also and still nothing....tried 3 different USB cables like he suggested too and still stuck.
Think I might need to unroot or delete the other crap I installed before? I'm out of ideas.

ok try this from the beginning
1. reset phone factory reset via recovery ( hold power up - home - and power button ) simultaneously and once you see blue recovery text top left corner let all the buttons go. select factory reset and proceed with reboot.
2. press ##3424# and select pda and make sure you have MTP-ADB selected
3. try rooting your phone via ODIN
PS: if it does not work change step 2 under PDA setting to DM-MODEM-ADB then root and once rooted change it back to step MTP-ADB
let us know if this works for you

It's cool, I ask just in case. While I do consider myself a bright individual, I do not know very much about newer cell phones or android (this is only my 2nd smart phone, before the Photon I had been using my Blackjack without net. That phone lasted forever!) And before the Photon had never modded any cell phone in any way save an extended battery.

Ok so oddly enough, after I performed steps 1 & 2, when I rebooted my phone I notice SuperSU was in my apps list. So for $#*^$ and giggles I downloaded Root checker to test it out and sure enough it says device is rooted. Go figure.
Thanks so much for your help guys, my girlfriend was starting to worry about me out here smashing keys and grunting like an animal trying to get this to work. :highfive:

Much thanks in advance.

try doomlord easy root
Thanks for the tip but I already got it rooted. Just took a few more steps than I thought due to some overlooked details with the initial install.
New problem!
Trying to get QBKings Native Hotspot mod to work and it wont let me transfer services.odex to the system folder but services.jar is transferring fine? Any ideas? I'm baffled here yet again. Tried 3 different root browsers but JUST services.odex wont transfer!!!!!
Sorry for joining late, but how are you transferring the file? ADB, SD?
