A BIG Thank You - G1 General

To all of the ROM Cooks ad brilliant minds like Haykuro, MarcusMaximus04 and everyone else who contributes their skills to the Android scene. I consider myself myself to be an expert in terms of tech savvy as I am an IT Administrator but I am by no means a programmer. I for the life of me could never build a Windows Mobile ROM that worked well and find the same to be true for Android ROMS. Big props to those who can!
I recently acquired a G1 and immediately came back to XDA for new ROMS with more features and better usability and I have not been dissapointed. After installing and reinstalling all of my apps over and over after every ROM upgrade I decided to jump in to the Apps to SD mod. After reading Marcus' tutorial and then actually following Haykuros directions for his ROMS I could not be happier. Flash the ROM run through the ADB steps and viola, all my apps are back. Genius!
Again, props and BIG thanks to everyone who contributes. I may never be able to build a ROM or Script but I will do my best to answer questions for problems I have had resolved for anyone who has a similar one.

HTC Desire newbe help.

Hi all,
I have just aquired my first Android (aka HTC Desire) after becoming all to familiar with Windows mobile!
My phone is from vodaphone with Android 2.1 and bootloader .80 version. I am unsure if it is branded but i suspect that it is as there is as vodaphone scene amongst the installed htc scenes although there dosn't appear to be anything else 'vodaphone' on the handset.
I have trailed through many forums (mostly this one) but haven't been able to provide wholly satisfactory answers to my questions and was hoping some kind sole would take the time to assist me for which i would be eternally greatful!:
Here goes:
My object is to flash my device with Froyo with the sense ui embedded which i have allready seen.
1. Is my phone actually branded and, if so, do i have to address this before i can continue. If the answer is yes, could somebody point me in the right direction?
2. Do i need to root my device to install Froyo and, if so, again could somebody please point me in the right direction(bootloader .80)
3. Assuming success, can somebody point me to where and how i can locate and install the best version of Froyo with embedded htc sense for my device.
If this is impossible with my device, i would appreciate someone in the know to break the sad news to me and i will wait (with my allready full Desire) for Vodaphone to send me my Froyo update! (perhaps for Christmas if that's not too optimistic.
1) is it branded? if its issued by vodaphone, chances are it is.
To root branded devices, you'll need a goldcard, follow this link (its specific for htc desire) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6710085&postcount=3
2) to install froyo BEFORE the official release , yes you'll need to root it.
It's quite an easy process, took me under a minute using a one-click program.
Rooting guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709146
3) best version of froyo with sense ... hmm
i'm using DeVillianRom but that's just my opinion of course
all roms can be found here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=628
hope this helps, make sure you check the HTC desire section regularly
Thanks jdebunt for your prompt reply.
I will be trying this out tomorrow morning and i am very grateful for your time and help.
After a year of 'messing' with windows mobile i was actually able to assist people with various problems! I have had an Android for one week now and have found this forum invaluable for understanding this excellent (almost) device.
I say almost as, after researching the Android platform, i failed to notice the lack of embedded apps2sd (until Froyo) which i think is a critical ommission.
Sorry to waffle on and thanks again and i will report back as to how it goes.
(One week old.....bricked???)
no problem, glad i could help
i do indeed rejoice at the sight of installing apps on SD because of the 2.2 roms, tho sometimes the apps load very slow...but that'll be sorted soon probably
if there's anything else, don't hesitate to drop a PM

So what's my next step?

Hey all new here but have been lurking and learning as I go. I've got the Tmo Hd2 and recently just flashed hspl, and the energy rom onto the phone.
I'm looking to add the most functional, and stable android rom next. Any good recommendations? Oh, looking for an Sd, one. Also this would allow me to access the android market correct?
I know I'm probably missing a lot of things but please bare with me.
A lot of people will probably just post "do your research and find the best ROM that suits you", so I suggest you head over to the SD development forums, read the feedback of the more popular ROMs and find one that appears to be fast, stable and good on battery.
Almost all Android roms allow you access to the market, yes.

[Q] I'm just tooo noob for all this...just guide me around

I just purchased an unlocked TMobile HTC Leo, which I'm gonna use with att. I've heard all the capabilities this phone still delivers and being honest, I'm really excited about upgrading it to an Android OS from day one. On the same note, I have to say that I'm overwhelmed by the variations of ROMs, ways to install them, etc, etc, etc...I'm not a techie by any means, the only related experience I have is changing the OS on my BB bold2. believe when I say I had being checking threats after threats for hours in order to not deal with a dumb troll, but all I could find was old guides (a year old or so). so if somebody can pitch me a couple of useful noobie tips, send me some links of updated guides, any warnings or has a useful comment, be my guest.
This is all you need, i think....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136644
And you have to read those two very short and small warnings before you start :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16255579&postcount=2
and this ..

i agree that whats listed above should be rather helpful but you should also read this thread found here. its Flashing Your First HD2 NAND Android Rom [For Newbs] & will guide you through the steps in order to get Android onto your device. this thread was written with the noob in mind so everything is written rather simple in a straight forward manner. the steps listed on that page will have you lose winmo and it will be replaced by Android. if you want a sd build then i would suggest one that has Android already built in like this one so you can get a feel for it before deciding whether or not to go to a nand build.
please before you flash any rom/radio/kernal/...people you have an idea of what your doing or atleast know what not to flash. if you have a 1024 leo flash 1024 leo roms if you have a 512 leo flash 512 leo roms
Sorry, unrelated but I couldn't help pointing out this:

welcome. good reads above.
just wanted to let you know, too, that with the tmousa on att, you will NOT get 3g. just edge. that is a hardware issue. if you want 3g, you will need the telstra version of the hd2. but i reckon you know this, but thought i'd share just in case.
enjoy.
why not try some of the SD builds first? at least you don't risk bricking your device, and can enjoy android until you feel ready to flash NAND
thank you guys for the quick responses and inputs. its cool to know that you belong to a dedicate comunity such as xda; I'll check out my options and let you know my progress. thnx again
lol, threads AND threats as well!! there's some short temper ppl around...

[Q] Installing [ROM][4.1.2][HYBRID:CM10]Paranoid Android

i am not related to IT by profession, nor have much of a knowledge; however, i believe i have learnt a bit to install Android on my HD2 (ofcourse trying something like this for the first time).
after going through several threads on this forum, i have established some understanding on how to flash a rom.
i am using:
HTC HD2 T8585
Radio Version: 2.15.50.14
i just need some senior member or other experienced person to go through following part and confirm me if i have learnt the right thing to flash my HD2 for the first time.
currently, it is running on WP6.5...
so i will first flash HSPL 2.08...
then i will flash MAGLDR v1.13...
later, i will install ClockworkMod Recovery for HD2 - v1.3
then i believe comes the ROM part...i will be using this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37316966
all the tools mentioned above are download from xda forums, as posted by senior members and developers.
my thanks in advances to all, specially to this thread "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021837"
if i am missing some part, pls do highlight. thnx.
Hi!
The process you described is OK, if you are still unsure about flashing, read this nice tutorial by mengfei:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25781675#post25781675
I followed this guide back then and everything worked perfectly during the flashing.

indeed!
btw which one u using? this one got a little bug with paranoid setting. rest all works fine.
I personally use kovjanos' paranoid ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974062
It's a relatively old release but there weren't many changes in the official PA source since then as they moved to 4.2.2 and PA3+, and the newer PA and PAC roms don't have properly working paranoidpreferences app. I use it with the PA framework because the PAC one is really laggy for me.
Meanwhile I'm waiting for the WiFi fix for 4.2.2 (I'm not a developer so I can't really do anything for the case unfortunately )
If you want to have fun you can try Zejsters' PA2.99 port, it has really amazing features and is fully functional (except for wifi)

Why do you need installation instructions? It's the same as any other ROM. Custom recovery, factory reset, install ROM, install gapps. Reboot

because sir,
it reassures people who have never done it before....a small example...i am 43 years old and until feb of this year i had never used an android device, then one day my brother came over and gave me one and voila i was introduced to android and have never looked back..my point being...there are new people discovering android every single day...we are labeled....NOOBS...by the community...and for good reason,we know little if nothing about the devices we own...but as you....and maybe many people all over the globe were once also NOOBS you can understand that a friendly bit of info..like installation instructions...can go a very long way to helping people feel better about what they are doing...and save everyone who has to help them out,(when they maybe mess it up),wasting their time when i am sure they could/will have better things to do...capeesh...
There are tutorials EVERYWHERE. Xda, YouTube, blogs. This is not ROM specific. Why do we need to rehash the same things that are already published out there? Use the info that is already there. No need for us to rewrite it. Flashing Roms requires learning the lingo, the proper tools, and the willingness to learn how to recover from failure. This website contains more knowledge than you can imagine on these things. The onus is on you to learn what others have already provided.

Questions before buy Oppo 7
Hi
I love the paranoid rom, thanks a lot!!!
I have figured out that many questions is answered in change log, but as a not so experienced user i hope the community will answer me in this thread, by prose or by links, thanks!
Before i buy oppo 7 i like to ask a few questions.
- is headset play, paus, skip volume etc part of PA rom; when the screen is on, and off?
- support PA install apps on sd card, or can it move apps to sd card?
- what steps is recommended before i root and before i change rom to PA? Do i need to take some backup of important info? This question is due to possibility to restore phone to "original"
