Camera - cmos sensor problem? - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

Few days ago, my camera started giving me problems. I get green ish and pink ish distorted image all over. And when I snap, the picture taken is all green (or grey when seen in resco picture viewer).
Actually I hardly use the camera. Although the camera in my opinion is quite ok but not that great and furthermore, I prefer not to waste my battery power by taking camera shots with my Dopod u1000. i usually use my sony errisson k850i instead for taking pictures.
Therefore I can live with not having a camera on my Dopod u1000. But if anyone can enlighten me about why my camera can suddenly become like this I will find peace of mind.
Could it be the cmos sensor problem and if it is then how to fix it? Is it something I cannot do by myself but must go back to HTC service center?
Is it camera drivers problem? I know that the device must have some drivers in built such as the USB and microdrives drivers and that these drivers doesn't come with the rom upgrades.
I did disassemble the unit for other reasons but I suspect the problem was not because of the disassembling the unit. In fact if I remember well, there was something not quite right with the last camera shot I took even before I disassembled the unit. I clicked and the screen went dark for quite a while before the picture appeared.
Thanks

I found an interesting website about cleaning the camera sensor. Unfortunately, there is a negative side to all the methods recommended. That makes it look like it has to be left to professionals. But the problem is camera professionals will not know how to dismantle our Dopod u1000 pocket pc even though they know about digital cameras. they might damage other parts of the pocket pc. So, it has to be either done personally or it has to be done by HTC service department.

I'm experiencing the same problem and quite sure that is a software problem. I swith the jpg compression from Super Fine to Fine and apparently the problem is gone. When I tried to get back to Sufer fine the problem restart. I would recommend that you reinstall the SW for image if nothing else help. if some one come out with another approach I would like to hear.

cphilip, how did you settle the strap, using the speaker grilled door? it's strong enough? it's something that I miss in my Advantage.

Yes. The anthena casing is made of aluminium. Very strong. Not plastic. At least the casing of my Dopod u1000 is strong and I would believe the Athena is the same. My friend accidentally dropped his unit on to hard floor but the internal parts are perfectly protected by the strong casing. the plastic cover around the camera and the bottom battery cover are the weak parts and can be broken if not careful.
I would love to get the software drivers for the camera. When we buy laptop or desktop, we are usually provided with a set of drivers for the components connected to the main board. Unfortunately, for Pocket pc, we are not given a set of drivers (softwares) so that we can reinstall if anything gets corrupted. I doubt if the some of these drivers comes together with the ROM upgrades for the Athena. The ROm upgrades for Athena are mostly made up of the Windows Mobile operating system that is designed to work with the Athena correct me if I am wrong on this.
Even though I love Michy's WM6.1 ROM, I have already reflashed my unit with the Dopod windows mobile 6 stock rom and the camera is still the same.

BTW, I used a simple string to go through the grill and when I manage to pull the string out from the other side, I tie the string to my strap. then I carefull pull the string to guide the strap through the grills.

Thanks, I though about the same but was affraid the strap will eventually broken the case speaker grill. will do it now.
on the camera problem check on this fórum for the HTC camera and camera album software download and try them. it may bring your camera to live again.

Although the grill of the athena cover is strong But I wouldn't advise on swinging the device with your strap because the string of your strap might wear down and snap if you do it often enough. For me, I like to have the strap around my wrist when reading an ebook in public places because i feel some extra security just in case i accidentally let go of my Athena.

did you get any progress on making your camera working?

thanks for your concern and suggestions. unfortunately, i downloaded and tried the softwares but still not resolved. At the moment I am just using my U1000 without the camera and all is fine. if i need to take pictures i will just use my k850i.
But will definitely appreciate any new ideas that might help to restore the camera. Until than the other features of the Athena x7500 is provinding almost all my mobile computing needs. Thanks

QTek 9100 high-res photos, impressions and benchmarks!

People wanted photos... here (note the forum software here seems to be broken so you'll have to actually click the photos to see them). Sorry about the blurry backlight keyboard photo - its pretty hard keeping still for 4/5ths of a second!
Enjoy!
Any chance to have some photos taken with your 9100's camera so we can compare the quality with JAM?
Thanks for the photos!
Awesome! Post your impressions!
Here!
The above post was made entirely from my 9100... pretty nifty. The camera quality is pretty terrible (as expected), the flash barely does anything except for at extremely close range (as the sample photos demonstrate). The flash stays on all the time when its enabled but when you finally press the shutter button it goes slightly brigher.
Overall, the device seems very robust and solid. The only slight downfall I've observed is that you need to make sure you slide the screen squarely or it will get jammed. It is a little bigger than I had hoped for, but still definitely pocketable.
GPRS, WiFi and Bluetooth are all easy as pie to setup and the flashing LEDs make it very easy to see exactly what you have enabled. I haven't noticed any real slowdowns, unless I have a ridiculous amount of applications open and then try to switch to landscape... oh, and the stylus can be annoying to get out/ put in (I'm used to it being on the top of the device and I'm not used to a telescopic stylus). The screen also feels very bendy/ stretchy, like the air-gap between the glass and the touchscreen layer is pretty big. This means that you have to press quite hard for the touchscreen to respond (I'm used to a feather-light touch on the hx4700). Other than that it feels fine. I'll post more after I've had a play. I havent even connected this thing to a PC yet!
Sound quality is superb! I thought I'd find the headphones that are supplied with it laughable, but they're not half bad! There is actually bass (not much, but its there) and crisp high-end frequencies! The question is: Is the limiting factor the headphones or the amplifier. Unfortunately I don't have a 2.5mm->3.5mm converter to hand to find out.
The earphones dont really fit my ears well (none do) so I might look into doctoring them by attaching a 3.5mm jack after the little volume slider box.
I'm quite an audiophile and I find the sound quality quite acceptable, it definitely wont replace a dedicated MP3 player, but if its all you've got it will do fine.
can you post a picture of your device info. my kjam says 195mhz on processor speed and I have heard that the qtek says 200mhz. but that was a pre production unit. can you tell me if yours says 200mhz or 195???
This one has it's clock set to 195MHz like the K-JAM.
Also, if you're totally obsessive about the condition/ resale value of your devices, you dont need to open the sealed CD (its sealed with a Microsoft label). All it seems to contain is ActiveSync 4.0 and Outlook 2002.
Another thing I noticed - on the side of the box it says "802.11 b"... I'm not sure if this is different to the K-JAM which says it supports 802.11g among others. Has anyone bothered to see what the throughput is on the K-JAM?
The benchmark is in. Use the contents of these files at: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/benchmark/handleresult.php?en
These results are taken from a fresh hard-reset hx4700 and a fresh hard-reset Qtek 9100. Yes, I realise comparing a WM2003 to a WM2005 device using such software isn't particularly fair... but it does accurately show how much slower the Wizard is (especially when it comes to writing files straight into flash ROM).
Note that the storage card results in the Qtek file should be the same as the "main" filesystem results since its reading from/ writing to the same place (I don't have a miniSD card yet). The reason the Qtek outranks the hx4700 in the graphics department is because the hx4700 is a VGA device.
The battery results for the Qtek 9100 are with the GSM radio activated.
If you've been monitoring the reported bugs on the K-jam on HoFo, it'd be interesting to see how the 9100 compares and whether you find the same bugs.
Also a little concerned about the wifi only being b spec not g. Can you test this?
I just switched my Wireless AP to "G Only". This took out my old laptop with a B card, however my Qtek 9100 was still able to connect fine.
Also, I've been messing around a bit more with the camera... and the photo quality is abysmal. My Nokia 6600 took better photos!
It's amazing they couldn't put a better camera in such an expensive device. What's the point of 1.3 mega pixels of noise?
I totally agree. They may as well have just put a 300kpixel camera in there, the quality would have been the same.
my guess is that those pictures were taken too close to the keyboard for the lens to focus on it. I saw some pictures from a k-jam and, while still not that good, they were much better than these. I believe the same camera unit was used in both.
The camera's focal distance is terrible. I compared it to a Sony Clié which could take a crisp photo of a sheet of paper about 5cm away with only a 300kpixel camera!

I've just got a pair of 9100's to replace our old 6310's. The first one I opened (and gave to the wife) is as responsive as my 4700, even with a PPC Tech screen protector on. The second sounds just like yours ShALLaX, definately more squishy, even before I put the screen protector on...

Problem with my Front Sensor

Hi every one,
My Hermes' Front Sensor has got some problems
I use Web Camera to open Front Sensor and i can only see a mass of purple very very unclear image through it.
And the last time i use web camera to check Front Sensor i didn't find such a problem, everything goes well.
If there any bugs in the Front Sensor ?
Thanks !
no one knows....?

The same thing has happened to me. I have tried it on different roms, including one I know it worked on before, so it must be a hardware issue. Could this be caused by a loose connector or something with a simple fix like that?
I dont want to take my phone apart if theres no chance of fixing it anyway.
Maybe people are confused by the term "Sensor"?
I will assume you meant the Front Camera.
If so, then yes the connector can come loose. It is a simple push on connector, but you do have to dismantle quitefar to get to it.
Have a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2337130&postcount=4
Assuming you have been through soft and hard resets, you MIGHT want to attempt dismantling the phone.
Mike
Well, I got ss1271 by email and I'm confused (nothing unusual there you may think!!) What he says is this:
Sorry for that I cannot have an access to this xda-developers forum right now, but I'll check it asap.
Well, I mentioned "sensor" which refers to the sensor module that located right of the earphone( a transparent some cube-like stuff), not the front camera.
Whatever, I'm very glad that u could gimme a possible answer, thanks in advance!!

(Hope you don't mind me posting the email ss1271 - nothing looked private or confidential)
Can anybody think what is being referred to? I know there is a keyboard light sensor, but that seems irrelevant so what is being referred to?
Any ideas?
Mike
Thanks Mike, you were right the first time, it is the front camera. The confusion has come about because Ateksoft refer to it as the front sensor in their webcamera software, and as that and coolcamera are the only software other than video-calling which can use the front camera, that is where both ss1271 and myself discovered the problem.
I have opened my phone up once a while back, but am not in a hurry to do it again until I have a serious need to use the front camera.
I actually used your guides when I opened up my phone before, and will again if I try to solve this before I upgrade, (too poor to at the moment), so thanks for providing them.
Heres a pic of me taken with my front cam.

Well hoagy looks fine!
The push in connector is the most obvious first thing to check in my view. The trouble is loose connectors can show a host of different scrambled pictures and weird colours and missing lines. Can't recall one that vivid shade before but I've seen bright green
I guess the standard thing is just ensure it's not software by doing a hard reset (but I guess you have done that already)
Mike
Hi Mike,jez
First i apologize for my mistaken the Hermes with the Touch Diamond.
When I first got Mike's mail, I took it grant to think that Mike was talking about the Diamond issue...
I'm sorry for you two guys to get confused.
Now I'll clearify that in this thread I was discussing about the FRONT CAMERA of Hermes.
and unfortunately I eventually cannot fix the front camera problem.

Front Camera Board Shorting out!

hay i recently dismantled my HERM100 to figure out why my battery life went to hell, and where most of the heat in the front was being generated, as it turns out i have a short somewhere in my Front camera board, and need a replacement.
does anyone know (preferably in australia) where i can get the component, other than on ebay, or is anyone willing to sell a "bricked" hermies so i can just swap the mainboards round and go?
this also seems to be messing my camera functions, and front led's have gone dull, other than that its working fine.
but if anyone has known this to be a software issue in the past, this fault only became apprent after i updated the boot loader, and software for the wi-fi/GSM and OS, or it was just going to do it at that verry moment becuse murphy hates me!
on another note is there a copy of windows mobile 6 that will work with PDA's as reasion being i recently handed over my old HP-R17 somthing or rather, to a friend who needed one, as fortune follows he like my self hates the ok button that dosent close squat, but minimises things and i am feeling that the taskmanager designed for WM6 wont work on a pda with WM5 that too and he would prefer to update, just wondering if anyone has tried this before!?
ps ... bump!
FIXED
i managed to fix it, it was a shorted capacitor on the camera board connected to U2, i think it was U2, but it only was connected to the LED's this cap is connected to the Ground and positive going rail and is mostly a filter cap, it was a little burnt and fell off easly after which all worked cool again and no problems with either the front camera or the main camera.
this thing was so small it was only visable as a faulty component under a high power magnification

g1 camera messed up? IS it doomed?

Ok, jsut got this thing off of ebay, power it all up I notice someone has been inside. eh no real biggie.. I unlock it and test the major functions.. all works. Bring up the camera and holy crap its like looking through the eyes of a lawn gnome tripping off shrooms and acid.. take a look (attached)
I rewiped.. installed Fx Camera to see if it was a setting, and also wiped the memory card (which came with the phone.. cool!) I then turn around and see that the camera lens is cracked on the battery cover, however the lens inside looks pretty good. So, I'm thinking this is a hardware problem, but Im not afraid to try to fix it if its just a few dollars. Am I screwed?
whoah, thats a trip!
If you deem it to be hardware, I have a spare camera from a parted G1. PM if you want details
I may take you up on that, however I am searching google right now to see if you can even replace the CCD
The camera module is on a ribbon cable that attaches to the motherboard, easily removed. So long as the component damaged is not on the mainboard itself you should be fine.
That's what I like to see!
You have a PM
If you plan on taking it apart yourself you need to be extremely careful, i took mine apart to replace the case when i bought it and after putting it back together everything seemed fine but after a while the touchscreen kept dying the camera never worked and my signal dropped all the time, i tried taking it apart and putting it back together several times to no avail. The phone became unuseable and i shelved it for my D600... bad times. It was only until i was going to send my G1 to a phone recycle website that i opened it up one last time, after doing nothing different and putting it back together its for some reason worked ever since. Just a word of warning hope whatever you do works out ok - Adam
Thanks for the warning! Someone already has been in the camera before.. I am going to assume that it was to take a peak at the camera lens so I am not afraid of voiding the warranty. It's no new adventure for me, I have been inside multiple phones and other small electronics, but thank you again. It never hurts to be redundant when opening any electronic device.
PM returned
When disassembling, I like to modify the HTC manual a bit. I remove the back plastic, and the coaxial cables (be VERY CAREFUL when reassembling, they always get pinched!). Then, remove the connectors as instructed EXCEPT the camera. Now, lift the camera portion, as well as the IMEI sticker as a whole module. They are just taped down. When lifted up fully, now you can spin the mainboard out of it's hooks and remove the entire assembly. This was the difficult connection to the camera stays intact. Makes reassembling much easier too, as it will self align.
If you haven't read/downloaded the G1 service manual, you need to!

Whoa! My first phone that has a manual!

My phone just started doing the same thing. I flashed the ADP image to see if it was a bug with the ROM I was using, only to find that it was still all crazy looking. Contemplating if I should try the repair or warranty exchange my phone again, ugghh
mine's doing the same suddenly, according to this: http://www.fixya.com/support/t2307654-htc_g1_camera_takes_pictures_messed_up
it's called solarization but how does one turn it off without a hard reset?
I downloaded the Snap Photo app which allows turning solarization on or off but it makes no difference
Any know how to fix this?
starting to look less and less like hardware
Anyone know how to switch this back to normal?
Hate to say it, but I do not see anything that would point this to software. First, if it was a setting or something software related, it would be resolved by the factory reset.. Heck, flashing the rom like JackSlim did would have reset any bad stacks or drivers.
I did find that post by fixya initially and quickly dismissed when I noticed that 1. Fixya blows... 2. there was no resolution 3. this is the same behavior that digital cameras get when the ccd or cmos goes bad..
PLEASE correct me if Im wrong, I would rather be

After reading the post of Fixya I went into Camera Magic and played with some of the setting and couldn't change it back to normal
Unrooted my G1 today, back to stock Donut DRC83, still the same issues, so I'm pretty sure it's not software related. Since I've had the same issue on the latest Cyanogen build, the Android Dev Phone build & the stock Donut build.
Called T-Mobile to get a warranty replacement, so I'm $9.99 and a couple days away from having another phone.
That's my fix anyways
I hope anyone not covered under a warranty is able to find a solution, my guess is you would have to replace the camera itself as Speed mentioned in one of the earlier posts, so look for a parted out phone or a aftermarket parts store and good luck with opening up the phone
As soon as money goes into my paypal account and I replace it I will post my results. Heck, if anyone is interested I will do a step by step for future reference. With pictures taken from a working camera, of course.
The only reason I am thinking software is that it seems like it is occurring to a few people all of a sudden where a week ago none of us had heard of this. I had a accelerometer problem with a G1 and I took it back to the RC29 rom and everything trying to fix it, it never would work. Sent it to HTC and they reflashed it...worked fine. They said there were no hardware issues. That makes me think there must be a bit of software that isnt getting replaced (like bios on a pc?). Perhaps what is going on is hardware..just hard to say right now.
The camera itself may have some firmware that is corrupted. Also possible that there's a fried transistor somewhere along the line. Could even be something really simple, like a bad ribbon cable or connection.
Cheers for Manual link
will greatly help when I swap over from black case to white case
( sticky keys and a mate wanted white one sooo $30 AUD for an complete white kit and hoping for sucsessfull fixed KB glitch )
note that you will still have black buttons for volume and camera, as well as memory card cover. That is what kept me from changing colors on mine- I went with a black replacement case so I didnt have the wrong colored buttons

How to disassemble the HTC HD2?

I need a guide how to take off the screen from the backcover. There are 4 screws, but when you remove them, the screen doesn't move, also when using a vacuum pump.
Is there a special trick to get the display removed?
I know, a guy @ www.xda-china.com has managed to disassemble the HD2, but as i don't understand chinese i can't register there and ask him.

No idea about your question, but did you ever try the google translation tools on this web site? It should be possible to translate it to English at least. Mabye that brings you forward ...
Request!
When taking your HD2 apart, could you PLEASE do the following:
Take high resolution pictures of the chips inside (pref. ALL chips)
A lot of us here really want to know what the memory chips say and what the broadcom chip says!
This would help a lot in the possible (if possible) development of a FM transmitter driver/app for the HD2 and it would once and for all answer the question if we have 448MB or 576MB of RAM and 512MB or 1GB of ROM.
Thanks a lot!
AGREE!
Yeah, i totally agree with ralphfx.
In this thread, i also requested some high quality pictures of the chips located inside the HD2 - the Boradcom chip especially.
This would be highly appreciated.
yeah,we are all interested about ram rom and comm chipset....we really appreciate if you take photos about this argument....
1. have a nice insurance
2. use excessive force
3. take pictures
4. call the insurance company, tell them someone bumped in to you on the bus and the phone fell and people walked on it
5. Win Win situation, we get pics, you get new phone
may I ask why you want to open it?

because the right upper corner of the display is lower than the other three corners and i would like to fix this. But i won't do that unless i have a really good guide, in order not to destroy the HD2.
i can recognize the same thing on my phone (at least it seems to be so). but:
(1) it is maybe 0.1mm difference at the top right corner _at most_ (just feelable when you move your fingers over the corners slightly and compare)
(2) there is no difference in the other corners, especially not in the lower left one. which makes me assume that it is not the screen that is tilt, but the frame that is bend. (did you check that with a master tool? maybe difficult due to the keys at the bottom...)
anyway, the difference is (at least over here) so small i didnt even realize it until i read your thread and took a _very_ close look at mine. of course, how bad it really is is highly subjective and as we all want pictures from the chips inside as well: plz go ahead! (and someone give him that howto finally!)
I had to remove the camera from my HD and here is how I have done it:
(This information is provided as is without warranty to accuracy. I take no responsibility for your action. Removing the back cover will void the warranty!)
Image 1:
Remove the 4 Screws. As you see on the Image, two of the screws have a stickers on them. I tried but I couldn't remove them in one piece. From this point on, you no longer have warranty on your phone!)
Image 2:
To remove the back, you need a plastic tool like the one on the Image.
Do not use metal or other hard tools. (They will damage the very soft and fragile frame and your phone will look ugly.)
Image 3 - Top:
These are the hooks that keep the top in place. You have to insert the plastic tool between the display and the frame and very carefully disengage the hooks on both sides.
Image 3 - Bottom:
The bottom side of the cover. On this side there are no hooks only a long retaining edge. At the reassembly this edge clips in first and then the top hooks snap in.
That's all. I haven't disassembled the phone any further as I only needed to get to the camera.
For all of you, who are not allowed to carry a phone with camera at work: this is your device! As there is no second forward facing camera, only the main camera must be removed. It is held by a cage (see last image). This can be carefully pried up and turned to the side. Then the camera can be removed and the cage closed again. Be very careful! The release for the cage is above some capacitors and you have not much space to work. Use a sharp and tiny screwdriver.
The camera driver is intelligent enough not to cause any side effects. When the camera software is started, nothing happens. No error message, no freezing, nothing.
I closed the camera hole with a piece of black plastic (from the back of a CD cover) and so it still looks fine.
The HD2 is the best business phone and it is a real joy to use in a daily basis...
Cheers,
Thinman

I'm sorry, I can't do that. I took the images in December right after my phone arrived and as you know: never change a runnig system...
The Frame around the Display is VERY soft and disassembling the phone repeatedly will certainly introduce some dents and bumps.
I had two minor ones (due to the fact, that there were no guides and I was looking for the hooks on the side) but I could smooth them out, so hey are barely visible.
I will check my images at home in the evening. Maybe I have one where the chip is visible but don't hold your breath as it wasn't my main concern back then.
Why would you not be allowed to carry a phone with a camera at work?

I'm working in a Design Center of a car company... camera == loss of job, immediately. They take this very seriously here.

It's to the right of the Camera Opening on Image 3. It's attached to the back cover and is connected by springloaded contacts (can be seen on the last image).
There are no wires between the back cover and the Display/MainModule. Everything is connected by touch contacts. Makes the removal very simple.

actually you made me lol
pretty common sense/logic that he is not allowed to use the camera inside the building in his line of work
another example is when I went to the VW/Audi factory in germany with my class a couple of years ago we had to turn in our phones at the entrance due to security reasons... also in places where there's government secrets/building - if you get caught in action you can get jail (something like that, was a while ago....)
Really extensive disassemble photo-guide in russian.
