Im in a dilemma right now. I absolutely love my touch hd so far but am at a crossroads. I need reliable push mail from my gmail account to my mobile... but so far reliability doesnt seem possible. Would appreciate any sort of guidance.
Im trying to have my gmail send all my mail to my thd device as quickly as possible. I cant afford to wait for it to arrive with a lag of say 10 minutes. It has to be as instantaneous as possible.
The problem with THD i find is that when the display is turned off, the data connection is also turned off. So the next sync only occurs when i turn on the display. When display is turned off... no emails. Ive tried tweakHD in an attempt to keep data connections always turned on, but no luck. Im not sure i set it right though.
Can reliable push mail be achieved on my thd? Should i move over to a blackberry device? (considering blackberry storm) Any help would be appreciated.

Iangohye, the answer is yes...I had this issue for a long time before solved. The long and short of it is, at least for me, it was a power management problem. I needed my exchange mail, but as soon as I put the phone in standby, it would disconnect the data connection, and would not reconnect until I turned the screen back on. What would happen is, while in standby, my data connection would connect and then something would cause it to immediately disconnect. Some power saving feature. Try this first:
1) Go to programs->phone->menu->options. At the bottom of the screen you will see tabs. Tick the "data" tab and see if the box "disable data connections when device enters sleep mode" is checked. This was unchecked for me so clearly not the issue. Some people, for whatever reason, do not have this option. If you do, and it is not checked then see the next step below, if it is checked, uncheck it and see if that solves it for you.
2) To check whether there is a power saving feature within your power management causing the disconnect in standby go to settings->personal->sounds and notifications. Set a sound for data connection established and data connection disconnect. Set your mail to sync in an interval such as 5 minutes. Put your phone in stadnby (screen off). Once the screen is off, you should hear the data disconnect sound. After five minutes you should hear the data connection established sound and then immediately hear the data disconnect sound. If this is the case.....
3) Install Schaps Advaced Config. Tap his "Power Management" option. In the drop down options, disable all of the power management options and set "AC resuming from suspend" and battery resuming from suspend to 60. Soft reset. Establish a data connections, and put the phone in standby. If your data connection stays on, go through each of the power management options in adavanced config and enable or disable each until you find which one is responsible for leaving your data connection active. The reality is, there are only a couple of options there that cause it, but for the sake of confusion, I would go through them all. Also, for your purposes, I'm not sure whether setting AC and Battery resuming from suspend to 60 is necessary, but I do it anyway.
This is what solved it for me and I hope the same for you.

Upgraded to the new 1.60 ROM hoping to cure this annoying problem but if anything its worse.
I turn the phone off and within 5 minutes its turned itself back on for no apparent reason. No notifications or anything. Cant be doing my battery life any good if it keeps switching on
Any ideas?
That may be something to do with the way that ActiveSync is set up.
I've had this kind of problem in the past and found that by killing activesync by using a task manager of some variety and changing my 'network' settings that the problem goes away
Please excuse me, im quite a newbie at this xda malarky. My xda also turns its self on randomly since installing 2003. you said change your network settings. How and what do you change them to? I made sure that activsync is turned off, but it doesnt make much difference either way.

My activesync is turned off, but the damned thing keeps turning on. Its sitting in the cradle at present and it turns on every 3-4 minutes!!!

I had this problem with my charger in the car. It is not sufficient to kill the Activesync. You would have to go to the options in the Activesyn menu, go to the new options button in the PC tab (the first one) and there disable the box with the name "Enable PC sync using this connection". This you will have to enable each time you want to sync via the cradle. I don't have the problem in the original cradle, it is only with the thirdparty car charger. I sync via IR or bluetooth and that is always available via the menu in Active Sync.

ActiveSync i can understand when its in the cradle but currently its sitting on my desk and still turning on at random intervals sometimes 30 secs after i switch it off!!!
Signal strength maybe?
I have same problem, happens mostly in car but not exclusively.
I get the feeling that it's related to the cellular signal strength and the device loosing or regaining the GSM connection.
San Francisco has several zero or almost zero coverage areas so it's not unusual for a phone to loose and then regain a connection while driving or walking.
I would love this device if it worked as expected but at this moment it is the source of endless frustration.
im also having these problems they are head doing never used to turn itself on as soon as i hard reset it just started to do this now and its annoying me so much

Guys, Check the setting of the ActivSync, most probably you will find a schedule for synchronization is set every certain time. So, you have to switch it to Manual Sync.
I think this should soulve your problem.
Sprite Backup
I too had this problem. For some reason the enabling Sprite Backup battery monitoring and Scheduled Backups caused this. try turning these features off if you have it installed.
I have same problem, its really anoying, have not found a way to stop auto connection even after changing some setting on my computer Activesync & XDAii activesync. I'm guessing theres no way to stop it.
Is there an active sync update available? I'm using 3.7 (build 3083)
For those whose unit turns on by itself, please check:
From your PPC:
Start > ActiveSync > Tools> Options > Mobile Schedule
Make sure all 3 options are set to "Manually".
From your Desktop PC ActiveSync:
Tools > Options > Schedule
Make sure every active options are set to "Manually" as well.
You can manually sync but Activesync still keeps "looking for changes"

Mine can turn itself on almost as soon as i turn it off, its a running battle to get it to turn off and i very rarely win, I have accepted the fact that mine will stay on most of the time now and have a second battery to help me through the day,
I checked all my settings and all mobile schedule settings were on manual and all the active options are set to manual too, so it wasnt those settings causing the problem,
I cant believe the lack of support that O2 are providing, if this was an HP handheld there would have been a fix for each problem as it cropped up within a week as they have done with each of their handhelds
do the people experiancing turn ons have a card in the Sd slot? i do but i notice when the device is off...... put a sd card in and the device turns itself on i only started to notice it turning on when i got my SD card i might take it out tonight and try then?
Yup, i have a card in the slot all the time, took it out for a few hours this morning and it was no different, still kept turning itself on,
I looked a bit deeper into it this morning too,
It seems that i use it, turn it off and it turns back on 13 seconds later, i turn it off again and it turns itself back on again 13 seconds later, so i try to turn it off and the power button has no effect, i have to press it twice to turn it off, then it seems to stay off for at least 30 minutes before going through the exact same sequence again,
I will list all my installed programs a bit later when i have more time, hopefully everone else can do the same (whether you have the problem or not) then we can see if there's a common program that is on all the XDA2's that might be making them turn on and see if its absent from the XDA2's that are fine
My mogul has to be recharged half way through the day? Im on it an average/alot but dont surf the net alot and I have installed teh x button so nothing is constantly running (or at least i think it isnt)
could i just hvae a faulty batery or is something goin on that is draining it?
The only things I can think of that are draining the battery are bluetooth being on, wifi being on, and possibly if you have it set up to check your mail very frequently. With wifi and bluetooth on even if you aren't actively using them they drain power cause they are constantly looking for signals. Other than that it should be lasting longer.
How do I change how often it checks my email?

To save power on the Mogul:
1) Turn off the data connection after using it using the comm manager. (Two arrows on top of the screen above the signal strength indicator.)
2) Turn off the bluetooth radio after you are done using it.
3) Turn off the Wi-fi when not using it.
4) Make sure all of your mail accounts are set to manual instead of automatically checking for mail every so often. This will keep your device from opening data connections.
5) Turn down the backlight when the unit is on battery power. I have mine set to the third lowest setting.
6) Set your auto shutdown time to 30s when on battery.
7) Press (don't hold) the power button when you are done using the device.
When I use the device in this way, I can almost get two days of regular use out of my device.

I'll second the above poster's suggestion of changing your schedule for checking outlook. To do this, go into ActiveSync on the phone, go to the 'Schedule' option and change from 'as they arrive' to 'every 5 minutes' or longer. This will help a lot
Here's another thing you can try. It had HUGE results on mine. You will need to edit the registry. I will suggest getting Total Commander (this is a great file explorer as well as a registry editor, and a text editor. Basically, these keys disable the mogul's ability to manage the power management functions it has built in. changing them to a value of zero will allow it to manage power more effectively.
Before doing this step, I would be typically close to a drained battery by the end of the night, after doing this, I'm still around 60-70%
To get to the registry in Total Commander, go to the topmost level of folders. You'll see an entry with two slashes that looks like this - '\\' Click on this and you'll have three options, FTP, LAN, and Registry. Click Registry.
Go into these places, and change the following keys:
HKLM\Comm\AsyncMac1\Parms
- Change the key 'DisablePowerManagement' to 0 (zero)
HKLM\Comm\Irsir1\Parms
- Change the key 'DisablePowerManagement' to 0
HKLM\Comm\PPTP1\Parms
- Change the key 'DisablePowerManagement' to 0
HKLM\Comm\L2TP1\Parms
- Change the key 'DisablePowerManagement' to 0
thanks for both your replies, havent tried it yet but will. is there a "push email" program for the mogul that you guys know of that will allow emails to come through like that so there is no setting for the mail to be checked every so often? it will just come in when its there.

well, are you connecting through an exchange server, such as a work email account, or are you trying to sync with something like yahoo,gmail, etc?
if you have outlook at work, then you can set it up with activesync to push it out to you. this can be done on your phone's activesync program menu. then you can go into the schedule option and adjust how often it syncs with the service. many people set it up to 'as they arrive' which maintains a constant data connection, and thus drains more battery. thats why 'every 5 minutes' saves you alot of battery drain. make sense?
Yeah that makes sence. I used to have a black berry and the mails just popped in without having to maintain a constant connection (as far as I know)
So, I find that when I use a browser or any other data connection software, the data connection stays on after exiting the browser or other data use software. This tends to run my battery down extra fast if I forget to go into the Comm Manager and turn off the data connection manually. Or I'm in a situation where I can't take the extra time.
Question 1: what are other people doing about this?
Question 2: Is there a something like the WiFi switch programs (I'm using AKToggleWiFi) which make turning the data connection on or off something that can be done with a button or shortcut on the today screen?
On Question 2, the main thing I don't like about the Comm Manager are the number of steps involved, and when I turn on the Comm Manager, it takes a few seconds for it to realize that the data connection is on, before I can turn it off.

Try this:
To disconnect network when idle for 1 min
HKLM\Comm\CommMgr\Planner\Settings\
Delete the following key: "SuspendResume"
add "CacheTime" value of 60
This should disable the connection if its idle for 1 min

To be honest I gave up on trying to understand Microsoft's reasoning, there is a number of performance issues that could be resolved easily that they choose not to fix.. They are special like that .. I thought about trying just disabling registry instead of deleting it, Glad that worked for you.
The difference in power use is profound. I think data connection wasn't just happening when I used it, but would go on by itself and stay that way. This is the first time I've seen this much power left in the battery after a whole day. It's still reading 100%, even though I've used the phone a couple of times. In 5 months, that has never happened.
I wish my wife's LG Touch was as open to problem solving as my WinMo phone. I'm pretty sure her phone has a similar problem draining down the battery.

I am very glad to be returning to a winmo phone, after having been forced to use blackberry for a while. I have used many windows phones in the past, so am sort of familiar with rom flashing and registry edits.
Just got an HTC imagio, and am using it with corporate exchange server, connected through VPN. I have a couple issues that I am hoping someone can help with. When my VPN is enabled, I go through the entire battery in less than 6 hours. When it is disabled, battery lasts for about 2 days. Any ideas about how to make the battery last longer w/ VPN enabled? Would the approach described about disconnecting network when idle help with this?
In any case, I would like to try. Would someone mind please directing me to a registry editor that works on imagio? thanks, and I'd very much appreciate any other ideas!

The problem is that Background Data and Sync ignore the wi-fi policy meaning that the settings to disable wi-fi don't actually disable wi-fi, they just block applications from using wi-fi. The OS can still use it and it still drains power.
That basically means you can never disable wi-fi unless you go in and change multiple settings. The wi-fi policy when the screen is off is useless. Any toggle wi-fi widget you put on the page don't work.
Manually refreshing gmail shows 'no connection' - browser wont connect. But the OS can still get your email and download attachments. Relegating any wi-fi policy to a 'user stop function', not a 'data stop function'.
I have a toggle wi-fi widget on my home screen. I have wi-fi toggled off (also shows as off in settings) I *just* saw the widget flick on for a second, then flick back off. That's the Background data/ sync kicking in right there and that's my whole point.
Another point - if you have disabled wi-fi then turn it back on, it should be looking for the router and getting an IP address. It doesn't do that. When you turn it back on all it does is enable applications to connect. Meaning, when you disable it (via settings>disable wi-fi or disable wi-fi policy) all it does is make the software think you're not connected. It doesn't actually disconnect from the router.
It still shows in your routers wireless list (which it shouldn't if it's disconnected) and ping test will fail because it will refuse any incoming/outgoing requests that aren't from the OS (background data / sync)
If you wait for the background data/sync to connect, you can then ping your tablet and it will work. A security issue as far as I'm concerned.

An update. I can confirm that the wi-fi will never turn off for me. I have toggled it off and put it in airplane mode and I will still get email notifications.
Under battery power it even still shows wi-fi as taking 4% even though by all settings it is off.
The gmail application shows 'no connection'. If i refresh it, nothing happens. If i turn the screen off, eventually it will sync/connect and I will get email - even though I also have the wi-fi set to off when the screen is off.
So to sum-up - wi-fi never turns off. Ever.
You can help by testing!

On the phone with acer support and they confirmed this is the case. They started to explain about Background data and Sync and I stopped them right there. This isn't a settings issue, this is an OS/Hardware issue.

Everything is confirmed with tier 2 and for what it's worth, it'll be pushed further down the chain and looked into.
I had to clarify with them that the issue was with the OS/Hardware and it's not software. If the wi-fi is disabled and I can go into gmail and it show 'no connection' and i hit refresh and it wont get email, then open the browser and it tells me I'm not connected, then the software thinks the wi-fi is off.
The problem is that the wi-fi isn't off as far as the OS is concerned. It is still draining power and Background data/ Sync are still able to connect (and/or override your settings). This shouldn't be the case. The wi-fi setting should superseed all other settings. If i set the wi-fi to off, it should be off for everything and not be draining power. Same issue here, have to get a widget to turn of the wifi. How can they oversee such simple things?
Also sometimes the power button just randomly lights up when its in sleep mode, it's a small light but very anoying if it's dark in the room (e.a on your bed stand).
Okay - Good to hear it's not just me then. But not so good in general.
If you're reading this thread, try it out. Set the wi-fi to disabled when the screen is off then email yourself from another computer and wait for the notification on your tablet. Or get a friend to email you a minute or so after you've turned your screen off (with wi-fi disabled on screen off)
You can reset the policy after.
If you get the notification then your wifi didn't disable while the screen is off like the setting is supposed to do.
mine is NOT giving me issues, but I have found that it can take up to 10 minutes for the wifi to go off. I just used ping to test it. In some cases it took a while but did turn off. My battery doesn't really go down at all when in standby with wifi off when screen off.

I mean, I think it's an issue. If you set the policy to disable wi-fi when the screen is off in the OS it should override any apps - I shouldn't THEN have to go and disable sync and background data as well otherwise whats the point?

Hi, I just ran these tests and unfortunately I can't reproduce your results.
When I disable wifi, I don't have any data connection.
As for wifi sleep, I don't know if it's a bug or intentional but it seems to put wifi into an extremely low power mode, but not necessarily disable it or turn it off when using the sleep policy.
As someone mentioned somewhere in this thread, it looks like wifi has some sort of 'cooldown' period until it turns the chip and process off completely.
I have used Wifi sleep and played Pandora and had Pandora play for hours until it finally disconnected.

when I am downloading a large file, my screen turns off after some time when I do nothing. So far so good. But when I resume to my Android I must see that the Wifi-connection was turned off, too - I think because of battery power saving.
But it was turned off during my file download, so I have to download it again and I have to keep my screen not to turn off by tapping on it periodically. That's what is annyoing me.
I recognized that the connection is not deactivated directly after the screen was turned off. It lasts some time (minutes?) then the wifi connection is turned off, too.
Is there a way to prevent the deacitivation of the wifi connection when the screen is turned off?

Goto settings>wireless connections>wifi adjustments
There you should find an option for WiFi selection politics. Just choose not to never disconnect.

I think this setting is only useful when you want to switch automatically between mobile data (GPRS/UTMS) and WiFi.

No. That happens whether you want it or not if you have a wifi access.
Or I have a couple of busted phones at home that totally ignore this setting.
Tell your screen to never shut off, then change back.
