Using G1 in India - G1 General

I live in the UK (London) and am G1 user (root/JF ADP1.5). I will be visiting India in the near future and would like to be online via the G1. From browsing the web it seems this is possible, other users have managed to do this.
I just wanted to get a clear picture of what is involved in getting the G1 data connection enabled in India?
Here’s what I expect, please correct me if I am wrong and please do add anything that you may think would be of interest in knowing…?
Purchase SIM card. Either Airtel or Vodaphone preferably the one is cheapest and/or provides faster data connection (ie 3g or not).
Phone is unlocked to accept any sim card so no problems there.
Enter some settings in the phone to enable data connection. It’s here where I’m unsure what to do or if the network provider will be able to provide the relevant details I would require?
Once I set this up will the G1 run as normal or will there be any limitations? Will google maps pick up my current location and how accurate will it be in India? Will I receive push Email?
Any other advice/comments about using the G1 on an Indian sim would be greatly appreciated.
Jignesh

As long as you have your data set up, EDGE/GPRS, maps will work just fine, so will your push email. GPS will work too, its pretty accurate, you'll just find tile download times excruciating especially if you are used to 3G. When in India i use Vodafone btw.

Everything work as expected, the interner comnection is EDGE based so the speed is slow, you can get the setting from the provider or else from the internet, generally provider settings are sent to phone through OTA and received as system setting message on other Nokia phone this feature is yet to be implmented on Android. The Airtel setting is Apn airtelgprs.com , once you create a new Apn settingyou just have to enter this apn and other default network and area code will bepicked from simcard
Nothing change the technology and network are same and if you are going to be in Delhi use MTNL as provider and use there 3G network to access Internet

yeah i used it for about 2 months there, no problems whatsoever..(except that I managed to get the screen cracked while playing cricket!) i am not sure about market/OTA working there...but you can use the gprs connection to use all the online frills that G1 has..

I live in Maharashtra, India & have Android Developer Phone 1
Here There Is no 3G only GPRS/EDGE
If U are going to visit Maharashtra or say Mumbai city,
I would prefer u to use Airtel Sim Bcoz Vodaphone Sim Costs 10paise/10kb means nearly 10 Rupees for 1 MB & in $, $1 for 5MB
While Airtel Allows 2 Data plans:
1. Daily Unlimited Plan:
Use Unlimited Data For Rs 20 - 25 per day
I would prefer U this Plan As My G1 at least Uses 30 MB of Data per Day According to Nercounter app
Ask the Airtel Gallery/ Customer Care For Activation...
2. Mobile Office Plan (30 paise / 50 kb):
This Plan charges according to your data Usage, 30 p / 50 kb means Rs. 6-7 per Mb
If U choose This activation process would not be given by customer care, so here is the process:
Dial *567#
Reply "1" Mobile Office Activation
Again Enter "1" Activate Mobile Office
It will be activated within 1 hour
now The Apn Setting:
Apn Name : put any thing, I put Airtel
Apn : airtelgprs.com
Then Save It, U have Activated GPRS/EDGE

Everything works fine, except:
1. OTA.
and 2. Paid Market Apps (at least on my phone! G1 with Jf1.5)

that too can be done !!!
1. OTA is enabled For Both ADP1 & G1 that too in all the Countries...
2. Paid Applications: Its Sim Dependent, So is Not enabled on ADP1,
sol : If u Have an Proper US Billing Address U can get past through it even on ADP1... Just Get MarketEnabler App on Jf 1.5
I can view Paid Apps but cant buy coz i lack US Billing Address...

Using G1 in India in New Delhi
Hi Team,
I got the Android from US, it is unlocked for all networks.
Now, in India I am trying to use it on Vodafone network in Delhi, but the phone does not starts, as after entering the username and password for Gmail, the phone is not able to connect to the Google Servers and so I am not able to start and use my phone here.

It seems that you have reset your phone, and thats why you got the activation screen.
and now with the Vodafone SIM, you have to setup your phone with their APN. On the activation screen, you have the option to manually set your APN settings by pressing the Menu button.

I m with vodafone so activated its vodafone mobile connect service.
vodfone says its gprs/edge service cannot access https websites..
as google login requires https protocol all those who are with gprs/edge wont be able to go ahead.
you need to call your service provider and tell them " i need data plan that allows me to access all www sites"
i have tried almost on all service providers and this is the language they understand..
it takes few hrs for activation for vodafone mobile connect.
after activtion enter APN: www
leave all fields blank.
BANG! you are now in if you don need the service deactivate it!

getting online to t-mobile service from unlocked [email protected] pc2003

I have t-mobile service and just bought a pocket pc phone that was supposed to be t-mobile but was an [email protected] ppcphone. The phone is unlocked and I put my SIM card in and the phone works fine. My question, is there a way to get online to the t-mobile unlimited service with this [email protected] phone or do I have to get another phone from t-mobile. I've tried entering t-mobiles access point info but it doesn't work. Can anyone help on this.
tdoman :x
hi
i have the same problem, my htc was and o2 xda, had it unlock ed and my tmobile wap settings wont work.
Yes, it should work with no problems... Key information points:
Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS)
Access point name: internet2.voicestream.com
Username, Password and Domain are blank
Also, under proxy settings:
Check "This network connects to the Internet"
Clear "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet"
Clear "Proxy Server:"
Note that these settings have only been tested by me in the US.
Robert H.
still having problems
it just keeps taking me back to the user name and password page. what should I do?
tdoman
Do you have the Internet access from T-Mobile? This is a different access type from what you would have had with a regular phone. I believe it is reffered to as T-Mobile Unlimited access (Shows up on my bill as T-Mobile Unlmtd)
If you don't have this plan on your account it will prompt you for username and password. That is the only situation that I know of which will generate the problem you are reporting.
Robert H.
true! i had the same problem with tmobile at first.
it turned out they signed me up for Tzones and not the unlimited internet.
it works fine now , with those settings in the post above.
it dont matter what ppc you have... i rewrote my ppc with many systems, tmobile, att, o2, asian... then back to tmobile.
money
how much is this unlimited service and is it avalible in the uk?

Only to Chinese Users of XDAII - Please help (GPRS)!

Hi guys,
I have the problem, that I cannot connect with GPRS. It always says that on the other side no modem is installed.
Provider: Shanghai Mobile / China Telecom
SIM: Prepaid (e-tong)
GPRS: "Business package" (inkl. 500 MB traffic)
Should you be using the same provider, I would be grateful for some screenshots (Chinese screenshots would be fine as well). I (and a member of the IT department) have already been calling 1860 several times and they told me that GPRS is already activated for my SIM, so that I should be able to connect. Only the business package will be activated on 05/01/04 but free GPRS should be working. What am I doing wrong?
For GPRS (no WAP) it is only necessary to make a new connection and enter "cmnet" as accesspoint, right? No proxy, no password and no username, right??
Please help...
May I copy from other site to solove this problem.
You must be set the APN to cmwap and then setup up the proxy sever to 10.0.0.172:80.
Please try it!
Thanks for your help but these are the settings for WAP via GPRS (please don't mind).
Meanwhile I figured out what the problem was: China Mobile did not activate my GPRS service although several agents at the hotline had confirmed that it was already opened.
GPRS (Internet, not WAP) just requires to enter "cmnet" as Access Point (APN) and then it works smoothly...
I've been discussing with China Mobile's hotline for more than 1.5 hours and spoke to five different agents. The horrible thing was, that four of them didn't even know what the difference between GPRS and WAP via GPRS is.
Having worked for a provider myself, I consider that quite astonishing (& frightening). China Mobile is the biggest provider (or at least one of them) worldwide, so that such a bad knowledge gap should really not appear.
For those guys with XDA in China: Shanghai Mobile offers a GPRS package with an included volume of 500MB for 200 RMB (appr. 20 Euro) monthly. You have to buy an eTong SIM card for that, activate the GPRS in any direct service shop of China Mobile and then you can start using your GPRS like hell, national GPRS roaming is supported and also inclusive.
That's a fair price and shows what is possible but not offered by European providers possibly due to margin reasons (they earn a hell of money with their business customers)...
I wish we could get that here, 20 euro for 500mb,
Good at PRICE, WORST AT service
Good at PRICE, WORST AT service
Thats it, PRICE is the only thing they offered
Certainly, it's only the price but as long as you can help yourself, you are well off...
how about the result of you?
As already pointed out, I figured out, what the problem was (GPRS not activated from provider's site, although hotline confirmed that it was active).
Now GPRS is running perfectly and GPRS WAP is also working fine...
8) Did anyone know the setting of China Mobile M-zone. I using it via cmwap. Also inform CS of China Mobile. But, still cannot active the CMnet.
Maybe GPRS Internet is not active or available for your card.
If your are trying to access the M-Zone WAP via CMNET this will fail as you need the GPRS WAP connection for that. So maybe GPRS is not supported for your SIM or the service is not activated for you (normally you have to apply via a form for it.
Third possibility is wrong setting - maybe you should call China Mobile and ask for the setting of your XDA2 (Chinese Name: Duopuda 696).
please can u attache here the cab file for china moblie GPRS settings for xdaII?

Vodafone & GPRS

I have recently unlocked my phone so that I may use it on Vodafone as the O2 coverage in my area is not the best.
My question is is it possible to log onto to the Vodafone GPRS system with my XDA.
If so how do I configure my XDA so that it works.
Awaiting With Interset Your Replies
Andy
im having the same problem
GPS
Youll need a slieve or gps reciever for the nav system to work. it will work fine with vodaphone, just not on its own as a hand set.
Vodafone GPRS Settings
Hi Vodafone GPRS setting on XDA are as follows: Start/Setting then connection tab, click Connections and on My ISP, add a new modem connection. Enter name i.e. Vodafone then select modem type Cellular Line(GPRS).Internet Access point is 'Internet' if your on contract, and 'pp.vodafone..co.uk' if your on pay as you go. Next user name is web and password is web. That's it your done, go surf.
Re: Vodafone GPRS Settings
Tried your connection setup as suggested and got the message 'No modem at above number'. Any clue what next, Thanx
Vodafone GPRS Settings
As far as I can see these settings work fine on the XDA1, I do not have access to a XDA2 so i cannot confirm if these settings will work on XDA2.
Doh! after categorically stating I had followed gadgetnet's advice and couldn't still get web access on my xda2 I have to eat humble pie. Gadgetnet's advice is spot on but ofcourse technonerds like me have to first of all check that their service provider has GPRS enabled their sim cards. I got Vodafone to enable GPRS on my sim (simply a phone call request made to their call centre) and half an hour later I was surfin in fine style. Remember if you want to access Adult sites like the National Lottery you have to go on line by other means to the vodafone website and set it up. Takes about 15mins with credit card as ID of age.
Vodafone GPRS Settings
Followed gadgetnet's instructions to the letter, worked a treat first time. Really impressed with the service far better thatn O2's. So thankyou gadgetnet.

GPRS in China

Hi, I have a jasjar in the UK using the o2 network, i will be going to China in june and would like to use the gprs nextwork there. Could someone tell me what i need to do to set it up? The help desk here keep insisting that my set up should just work, but I've been to China 3 times already and 3 times the gprs network was unavailable to me. What do I need to do?
Thanks
It all depends if O2 has a GPRS roaming agreement with the operator in China. You need to ask O2 this as they may not have GPRS agreements with every operator which they have a voice roaming agreement.
But when you find out what their roaming data charges are I think you'll find it will be far more economic to get a local prepaid SIM if the operator in the region that you are going to has prepaid GPRS. A quick google shows that E-Tong in Shanghai provide this http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20030707_use_gprs_in_shanghai.htm
That's easy. But firstly , would you like to use sim card produced by China?
If you use chinese sim card, the settings are easy. And what's more, it costs only 2$ for a month . Such phone number start with '136.........'.
The roaming will be extremely expensive. So it's better to forget about it.
The best way is buy one local prepaid card. But it's not easy just like saying.
China has two operators, China Mobile and China Unicom. China Unicom doesn't provide the GPRS service but CDMA. So if you want to use GPRS connection, you have to choose China Mobile. And China Mobile has three kinds of branded service, Go-Tone, M-Zone and Shenzhou Xing. The 1st one is only for registered users, so you won't be able to apply it. M-Zone is the prepaid and for sure with GPRS service, the last one may not be able to use GPRS depends on the different region.
But one thing you must pay attention. All prepaid card provided GPRS service is only able to use http connection with proxy. If you just want to browsing the web pages, it should be no problem. But if you want to receive/send email, there is no way.
Settings:
1: Web browsing
APN: CMWAP
Proxy: 10.0.0.172 port:80
2: MMS
APN: CMWAP
Gateway: 10.0.0.172 port:9201
Server address: http://mmsc.monternet.com
Enjoy it.
To use GPRS roaming in China check out http://www.o2.co.uk/business/produc...ices/travelling/using/gprsnets/0,,600,00.html
Seems its only China Mobile. And the charges are (gulp)

Hi dahuzi... thanks for your reply. Is the Go-Tone a contract service with a monthly service charge?...
May I make some amendments to what dahuzi said:
I'm using both Go-zone and M-zone, and both can browse websites and check email. They are 2 types of connection; one is so called cmwap, and one is cmnet. You should use cmnet, which is the normal GPRS connection used worldwide.
The charge is different in different regions. Let's say in Beijing, the charge is RMB 20 (approx. Eur 2.00) for 50Mbs, RMB 100 for 800Mbs.

The above settings is for mobile handset only. You will not be able to use for full intenet usage.
If you intend to use your PDA or PC to access the internet using GPRS. You will require cwnet for full interenet access, and this service only available for locals pay monthly account package only. The service is not available for pay as go customer.
Internet on the move for foreign visitors in China may be confine to Starbucks or some WiFi hotspots.
Anyone who knows the China Mobile CEOs please pass this message to them, we are frustrated with their GPRS services unable to give full interent access for us foreigners.
Well, I was in China during my easter holidays and was very happy to find, after getting my bill, that O2 did not charge a penny for GPRS roaming in China with China mobile. Furthermore there is no need for additional settings on Exec so that everything worked fine and, freely. The GPRS roaming was really perfect; there was no need to buy a SIM from Chinese operators.
I am with an O2 data tariff which accounts for 200M data per month (29.8 pounds inc. tax).
I'm however not sure if it is the same case with Orange but I guess, from my past experience with China Mobile (I used the GPRS service since its open day in CM), it is highly possible to be a free roaming. HOWEVER I AM NOT LIABLE TO ANY MIS-GUESSES so please don't accuse me if I was wrong ..
My service provider is Mobilinkgsm in Pakistan. Last week I visited China. My GPRS worked perfectly there in China. I also sent and received MMS messages without any problem.
I was not required to change any settings for either the GPRS access point nor the MMS settings as my connection with MobilinkGSM Pakistan is set to International Roaming. I have an i-mate Jasjar.
GPRS international roaming rates for Mobilinkgsm Pakistan though are quite high. They charge US$ 0.02 per KB which means almost US$ 20.50 for a MB of Upload + Download data.
Just wanted to share my experience.

Gprs settings not recieving from airtel.
I am using Airtel as it Is..... can someone tell me what settings work on my stock HTC magic phone. I have Airtel live activated. And I was very able to browse and log in to my mails etc. (The customer care guy was surprised that I had been able to access mails on Airtel, however I dont y he felt so). But when I went on roaming I was not able to access my mails but only cue browse the net. Then I tried resetting my fone to factory settings losing the Airtel live settings. Then called up Airtel and asked to send the settings, BUT THEY SAID THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO SEND THE SETTINGS TO MY CELL AS I WAS IN ROAMING.
Then even when I came back to local, they were not able to send me the gprs/mobile office settings to my magic. Any idea guys ......?
not able to avail 100MB plan from airtel
After repeatedly making requests to airtel customer care, I am not able to get the free 100 MB plan, which comes with new Airtel magic, activated on my handset.
It seems that Airtel is not yet technically equipped to support android handsets.
I am using AirtelLive and paying 100Rs/month for usage
Even I am also facing the same problem. SSL sites not opening up. Not able to access gmail/gtalk/Android Market on my GPRS connection. Have a Vodafone connection.
Tried the "www" APN settings thing.
Didn't work.
Any breakthrough so far?
After going through a few forums, I guess its a problem with the APN. Many people suggest clearing the proxy and the port fields. I tried that. But then, my EDGE connection was lost and I couldn't connect to the net. Following are the current APN settings that I am using:
Name: Vodafone live
APN : portalnmms
Proxy: 10.10.1.100
Port : 9401
MCC : 404
MNC : 27
APN type: default
If anyone is using any other settings on Vodafone, Do inform.

Well I have magic (not bought from airtel, but imported from TW), I have taken 399 gprs plan and every thing works fine. I sync exchange mail, gmail, yahoo mail, browse including secure sites. No problems at all.
1) You need to get mobile office GPRS plan activated on your number
2) APN settings are simple -> Set APN to airtelgprs.com and leave all other settings as is and set APN type to default, if your mobile office is activated you can see all you data stuff working.
Update: I have this from June 09 even before HTC launched Magic with Airtel
Subhash
APN issue
I flashed my HTC Magic to Amon Ra's 1.6 ROM. Everything works perfectly except gprs. The baffling thing is that when I put in some random settings for the APN, they get saved, of course it doesn't work, but when I add the correct settings, the new APN doesn't appear in the list at all and the gprs does not work. I am using a vodafone connection. Any ideas?
