Hi, I have been encoding my videos with sompy and I have been using 320 x 240 as the encoding settings however when i goto full screen I have black bars... when I play a file that has not been encoded for a smaller resoultion when I go full screen and check the option to fit to screen I get full screen with no bars... what encoding options should I use to not get bars in full screen mode?
im playing with tcpmp..
any ideas what optimal settings would be?
I use an iBook and there is a freeware called HandBrake. I adjust to 320x240 and encode to mp4 and aac audio. It'll take a DVD down to about a 1 gig. It's the same process I use for my iPod video and I get the same quality out of my Prophet and Wizard (OC'd to 240) using TCPMP w/aac plugin for playback as I do w/my iPod. Full screen and perfect quality.
Hi,
Windows media player is playing my files fine, but its screwing up the aspect ratio, ie. it plays full screen without the black bars of top and bottom. I want the black bars
How can I fix this?
PS! I tried the option under video "Scale to fit window", but that doesnt help.
Same problem for me with WMP.
I use HTC Album to read video, with the "aspect ratio" button (bottom right during play).
WMP i useless if it doesnt have exactly 800x480 resolution or same aspect ratio as 800x480.
Use Album or use converters which can make black bars.
Nice tip to use Album. Dunno why CorePlayer doesnt play the file as well as WMP/Album.

Because CorePlayer hasn't hardware support yet.
I have a different problem with WMP. Most WMV files I play in full screen I get black borders all around (top+bottom+sides) so I end up with a tiny video image. The size is not much bigger than when playing in portrait mode.
You can try to use the converter I wrote. It is in a sticky thread.
Regarding WMP:
It behaves very badly with anything that isn't the exactly right AR/Size.
I personally recommend album. It has more finger friendly controls and it uses the same rendering method as WMP, so you will not miss out on performance.
I'd like to know if Coreplayer will produce noticeably better video playback than the Windows Media Player or HTC Album Player that are already built in to the phone.
I don't care about other features or the number of different formats supported. If I take a simple .mp4 and play that same file with all three players, will CorePlayer have a faster frame rate or any other noticeable improvement?
Thanks for any info.
Coreplayer in my opinion is a great piece of software that you will really enjoy. It is a must for PPC!!

Coreplayer will be a lot slower than the built in apps, as it is unable to make use of GPU acceleration. People like it because it allows playback of a wider range of codecs and file types. The best video peformance is got by transcoding to .mp4 format and playing with HTCAlbum.
I used core player a lot over the past 2 months. It does have acceleration for mpeg4. I used Handbrake to encode up to 1500kbps and 672x378 Resolution. You can go higher in resolution, but you than cannot multitask without stutter. If I try to do the same with h.264, I am lucky to get up to 480x272 at 100% video playback.
Coreplayer cannot handle 800X480 mp4 videos without stuttering really badly. I am re-encoding some of the videos to 624 X 352 to see if it's more compatible with Coreplayer.
One issue I have with WMP and HTC Album is that they play 2.35 AR movies with the sides cropped and no black bars. I don't know if there's something I need to do when I encode or if that's an issue with the player. I cannot find any options to change this.
Coreplayer will display these movies correctly, but again, the stuttering makes it unwatchable. I am hoping the lower resolution will rectify the problem.
I really can't see any big difference between 624 X 352 xvid files and 800 X 480 mp4 files WRT sharpness and clarity. I don't think screen is big enough to make the distinction between the two resolutions noticeable.
Anything below 700w pixels it will run fine on Coreplayer.
Try out handbrake. It is free. Use FFmepg Mpeg4 files. You can use whatever bitrate you want but I wouldn't go past 1500kbps.
is coreplayer available for free or do i have to pay?
I have a question... I have core player for my device, and I've downloaded hand brake. Im wanting to make mp4's from my dvd collection. what do I need to do, and does handbrake contain everything I need to do this?

Core player is a pay application that is about 30 USD. It doesn't do mp4 videos as well as the built in apps as they use hardware acceleration. What core player does better is play other formats such as divx. I get 23 frames per second in high quality out of my 640x480 divx videos.
Although there is a Rhodium ROM on this site that does include it by default.
stupid question

I've got Coreplayer and it does well with divx, as you say. I just tried some MP4 videos and indeed they didn't play well. How can I get the built in player (not WM Player) to play something? I've removed all file associations from Coreplayer, which allows me to play an MP4 by clicking on it in File Explorer or Pictures and Videos, but is there a way to get the built in player to play an AVI file?

The stock player will only handle mp4, you just select your videos through the album and you're golden. I have a HD movie that plays with no stutter and DVD quality

FAB, thanks: now I know.
side note (purely conversational) -- I created a test MP4 with HandBrake, but there was no picture on the device, only sound (it plays fine in QuickTime on the desktop) -- back to fiddling with settings!
I use coreplayer since most of my movies are AVI(xvid). I haven't had a glaring problems with coreplayer other then the flickering blue screen when using TV-OUT. I really hate to trans-code videos.
If I really had to use TV-OUT for a video presentation, I found these setting removed 99.9% of the flickering. See link below:

***edit: I have been using other ROMs and they run fine with the settings listed on the link.***

I've not tried this with a video that is wider than 16:9, but certainly one that is narrower than the screen aspect ratio is played zoomed to full-screen by default, but this can be overridden quite easily. In HTCAlbum if you tap the screen you get a row of buttons appearing at the bottom, including pause and stop. The right-hand button controls zooming and stretching. By default a video is zoomed and cropped to fill the screen. Tap the right hand button once and it switches to stretching the video to full screen; tap it a second time and it switches to the correct aspect ratio (with black bars).
@combat goofwing
Are you using the old free CP or the new, $$ one? The free one stutters. The paid one works fine, set to Qtv. No transcoding, no stuttering. I just shoot my vids over and I'm gtg.

Wow. That was so simple. And here I was looking in the menus.
Thanks for the tip!
Accessing the built in HTC Album Player
Can anyone tell me how to access the HTC Album player? It just comes into action when I open a Video file, but can we access the program itself and adjust any settings etc.? One post says it only plays mp4. It plays my 3gp files too. Does it play any other formats?
Hi,
I had a mp4 video encoded at 800*480 resolutions.
When i go to file manager and access the file directly it plays normally on the HTC album software itself, but when i navigate to HTC album is is nowhere to be found.
Can anybody tell me how i could make my video show on the HTC album itself so I can access it on HTC sense.
Thanks

Either put the video in one of the folders Album recognises (Videos, Pictures) or launch Album and press the Albums soft key to select the folder where the video is. I have several mp4 videos and they all show up.

I tried this but it doesn't work. It briefly shows "wrong" sign in an empty square when i select the video folder, then nothing at all ???
Any idea ?
I'm having an issue with HTC Album whereby recording videos works fine and their thumbnails are created but selecting the videos within HTC Album doesnt play them. Pictures can be viewed fine but not videos. Tried a soft reset which still doesnt do anything. Tried a hard reset which cured the problem then after a short while HTC Album refused to play the videos it created again only allowing me to tap on the video and then it just sits there not doing anything. Any help much appreciated.
I have same issue's. video's taken bij the camera no problem. Copied video's 800x480 for example the helicopter video, won't appear. others do!
Only MP4 & 3GP (H.264 AVC) videos encoded with the Baseline profile (using x264) will show up. H.264 videos encoded with the Main or High profile will briefly show up with an error and disappear when opening the Album or the folder they're in.
The Album can still play them though.
Or at least, that's what it does on my device. Camera videos are encoded using H.264 Baseline and AAC. Would like more input for that.
To fix, either open them manually (Use a file explorer, look for your video, open it with HTC Album (\Windows\HTCAlbum.exe)) or reencode your videos using the Baseline profile.

I'm not actually converting any types of videos for playback on HTC Album. The videos I'm referring to are the ones recorded by the HD2 camera itself and by default show up within HTC Album but refuse to play even though their thumbnails are present and visible.
I have the same problem as you are describing and wondered how I caused it. I have installed Core player and all the videos taken with the HD2 play without any problem.
I have changed some of the links in the program folder to suite my own preference but none of the links were broken. When I open a video via HTCAlbums, the screen goes landscape with a "loading" message showing, it also plays what just sounds like static.
Not sure what I might have loaded that is causing the problem, a couple of programs are "Change screen" and "hComber". I don't want to hard reset so I'll start by uninstalling these programs unless someone stumbles on to a fix??
Same here, records but does not play back. Has anyone found a fix.
Cheers
Same issue here. HD2 from T-Mobile Germany. This is ridiculous & very annoying.

I had this issue it was caused by the YouTube app I had installed, don't know if there is a fix.
Video playback not working
Did you ever fix your video problem?
I have same.
I can't play back video taken on my Fuze ever since I loaded a WinMo 6.5 ROM.
Dan
I am haveing the same problem, brand new htc wont play the videos i record at all any one found a fix.. really like everything else about the phone dont want to send it back becuase of this....
I also have this problem (or a very similar one). I can see the video files in HTC album, but pressing on it does nothing.
If anyone knows the cause or solution I would be very grateful.
Same here......I just returned from a week skiing in Italy, where I shot some videos of a nice girl dancing on the table outside at -5 degrees celsius wearing a mini skirt and a mini t-shirt
We were all packed in multiple layers of clothes and skiing outfits and we weren't really warm.
She must have had lots of 'schnapps', cause she didn't seem to be bothered with the cold
Anyway, I shot 3 videos, the first 2 display fine, but the 3rd just says 'Loading' and then nothing happens anymore.
1st video is 10.6 Mb
2nd video is 4.5 Mb
3rd video is 12.6 Mb (this is the one that doesn't play)
It doesn't matter if I play the video from Photos and Videos using the slider, or from Albums frm the Start Menu, or from File Explorer.
Then I hooked up my HD2 to my PC, and copied the 3rd video to the PC where it plays fine in Quicktime. However, I've noticed that the first 32 seconds of the video has NO sound. Sound pops up after 33 seconds, so maybe that's what's causing these issues in HTC Album ??? Or maybe that the recorded size is a factor ???
Same annoying problem here!!!
Don't know what caused it because it was working fine before, maybe some program or tweak I installed...
Thumbnails of my videos show on the album and Sense but when I click on them nothing happens, the videos worked fine before and I can still view them on CorePlayer.
¿Any ideas?
I had this problem when i installed the You Tube cab. I uninstalled it and HTC Album and video worked fine
When you talk about the youtube app you mean the HTC youtube app or the Original Youtube app for windows mobile? the one you can download from the mobile youtube web
I can confirm that at least in my case it was the HTC youtube app that was causing the problem, it seems I have to choose between youtube or being able to watch my videos!
Ok so I converted Batman Begins straight from DVD to 800x480 resolution using Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate. I Converted it to an mp4 as xvid as the encoder. I've also tried H.264 as the encoder as well. I have tried everything to get the video to expand to the edges like the transformers movies did. I had kumar's lite rom but then switched to NRG's rom and its still doing it. I messed with the settings in the TCPMP player to see if I could force it to expand but it keeps staying cropped. I've included a sample pic to show you guys. Any help would be awesome!
*edit* after looking at the viewable size of the movie in the pic vs my screen size I would have to say its about the same size. But when you look at my screen as its playing the movie, it doesn't look that wide at all.
855-480 res with 16:9 aspect ratio?
ok sweet I think I figured it out. Another question. Looking at the size of the transformers movies (around 1.2gb each) and looking at the quality of the video, how could I make my rips the same quality but retain the same size of video?
.mp4 high quality codec try that setting
how did you figure out to get around the cropping?
I use core player and play movies. wmplayer does not do it for me. I use to convert movies for my omnia but you can adjust the aspect ratio on the fly. I usually do 16:9 but on the hd2 I have been choosing "fit to screen" and there is no cropping.
