I am one of those users that is having trouble connecting to GPRS more than once and getting the "unknown reason" problem. Only a soft reset or turn on/off flight mode will fix it. Well I found out what is causing this, at least for my device. I am running Wisbar Advance on mine and is what causing the problem. Once I closed the app, I can connect/disconnect GPRS as I please. I made calls in between also and it still works...
The developer for Wisbar is working on this issue so hopefully he will get this fixed. In the meantime, I have turned off Wisbar..
Hope this is what causing u guys' devices also.
Great info! Just a heads up. I had this problem since I upgraded to the 1.06 ROM however I have never installed Wizbar Advance. The only thing that I could get to fix it was upgrading to the Norwegian 1.11 ROM version or using the 1.10 US Radio stack. Even the Finish 1.11 did not fix the problem.

I have the problem and I'm not using Wisbar. I guess magician_os1.11wwe_bigstorage_6.zip is based on the Finnish ROM?
You can add another application to the list of problem apps (at least this worked for me)
Sygic .mobile contacts seems to mess up GPRS as well.
I've been using the 1.06 WWE rom, and i tried anasky's 1.11 bigstorage rom, and both times, with .mobile contacts installed, i received the "cannot connect for an unknown reason" error, after uninstalling it, GPRS reconnects fine everytime.
Hope this helps some of you.
i changed my sim card to a new one and now i don't get that error. plus i believe that part of that error is the service provider.
hope that helps
I have Qtek 1.11 and same problem too
It is a real pain, I do not have Wisbar, and I can only connect once then need a reset. Any ideas out there?
One cheap solution is to put the phone in flight mode and then go back to reset the GPRS. Not very smooth, but at least better than having to soft reset.

I have tried to turn flight modem on/off but i still get the error
"dialed:isplnk1.swip.net. The answering modem has disconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings"
Does ne1 know what I can do? so I can use my gprs again. it worked fine just a day ago, and I havent done anythin at all that could cause this problem
I don' t have a magician but a blue angel.
I've got the same problem.
It's the last built of IA Caller ID.
I've make a hard reset with no IA Caller and no problem again.
just double check the settings to make sure that the access point name shows up in the number section of the connection settings, when its not there that can cause the answering modem problems

I have 2 SIM Cards with the same number, one for the QTek 2020, and one for a Motorola mpx200.
If they are both switched on, then my GPRS is disconnected after about 15 minutes, and I can only reconnect by going in and out of flight mode.
If I switch the Motorola off, then I stay connected, and can disconnect
and reconnect properly.

Never had that error message. Only the one hamsup1o was talking about. Is the Norwegian 1.11 Ananskyfied yet? I want to test if the problem is fixed in that one.
For me, I don't think it's any one piece of software. Since I upgraded my Jam last weekend to 1.11, it continually disconnects from GPRS. Soft resets may or may not correct the problem on the first try so a second reset is in order. Trying to turn Flight Mode On/Off is a chore in itself. I may need to tap "Turn Flight Mode On" several times before it finally does it. Even when GPRS is connected it will only last 5 minutes. Then while still connected, going to a different webpage, says that webpage cannot be found. Very freakin' frustrating!!
So, today at work I backed everything to SD and did a Hard Reset. I then cancelled out of the Operator settings, but allowed the other apps to install and soft reset. I manually added my data settings and connected. Within two minutes I lost my connection. Reset the device and couldn't connect. Reset again and it's fine. It's hit or miss. Restored from backup. Gave a MS Voice Command error so deleted that. Several resets later on the train ride home and it's been fine ever since, for now!
The question is, could this be a T-Mobile problem? I called them yesterday and all they could tell me is that data outages in the Boston area may occur in the evenings due to upgrades. Perhaps it's just a coincidence that I did the ROM upgrade and TMo is acting up. I'm pulling hairs here!!

I have the exact same problem with my Jam on T-Mobile (in Colorado) however it seems to have gotten better with the 1.11 ROM. The strange thing is that it does not ever happen with my 6315 on T-Mobile. I have spoken with their customer services serveral times and we have tried a few different things. The last thing we tried was a brand new SIM card to remove that as a posible problem. Since doing that, I can stay connected to GPRS, take calls and it re-connects with out me doing anything and it seems to have helped.
I have not tried to see if there is any change between wap.voicestream.com or internet2.voicestream.com. Which are you using?
I have the same problem with GPRS and the Cannot connect for an unknown reason. It initially connects fine, but if I disconnect it manually, I cannot reconnect without the soft reset. I started getting this error when I upgraded to 1.11WWE last night. I went back to Version 1.06WWE and the problem was gone so it is defiantely a ROM problem. Imate's Customer "Dis"-Service continues to timeout everytime I go online with them. I am in the process of trying the UK 1.11JAM Rom to see if that makes any difference. I am with T-Mobile USA.
On the Club I-mate forum there are people with this problem as well and one of them is on Cingular!!! So it's not carrier specific.
__________edit
I tried the UK 1.11 ROM and it worked a bit better. There was even a new tab in the GPRS bubble that you could click to disconnect the GPRS rather than holding down the red phone button. But alas, I still got the Cannot Connect for an unknown reason mesage. I'm going back to 1.06 (Thankfully I backed it up) It worked fine. Is anyone having this problem with the Anansky hacked ROM?
Also, why does the UK version come with Skype and the WWE version doesn't?
Could it be due to Activesync?
I too have the GPRS problem, usually it occurs after synchronizing with the PC. The flight mode trick fixes it. I can repeat this behavior and can always fix it, so it remains a nuisance...
Since you can access the internet through Activesync, maybe the OS stays locked in that mode and does not allow for GPRS to be a valid network connection...
Anybody else have similar symptoms?
Mashie, I use internet3.voicestream.com. As you said nothing seems to help.
chinadan, Yes! I had the exact same thing happen to me last night. I've been tinkering with my Jam for the last week trying to get it to work. Last night it was working fine, but then I connected it to my desktop to load PHM Registry and when I disconnected, GPRS started flaking out! Performing a soft reset didn't help.
I've been going back and forth with i-Mate CS, and it's obvious they know there's an issue. They seem to be getting a little testie since I'm basically telling them I'm not an idiot so please get the crap fixed! They had the nerve to send me instructions on how to setup a GPRS Connection on the Jam! What nerve!
Anyway, think I'll try loading the worldwide 1.11WWE and see what happens. Anyone have a backup of 1.06 US 850 ROM?
Thanks and cheers!
Well, I went almost 24 hours without a GPRS problem on my JAM yesterday. I didn't get the usual "Cannot connect for an unknown reason" error message. This time I got a message saying that there was a problem with the modem???? I don't know where that one came from... changed my gprs setting to internet2.voicestream.com and it works now....until the next error message.
Screw it. I'm going back to 1.06. The JAM is VERY sluggish now and I can't even get it into flight mode to correct the problem. I guess I'll wait for the patch. (It seemslike we spend most of our time waiting for a patch or an update of some kind. ARGGGHH!)
ALso, I don't know if this was the case with the 1.06 ROM, but I used to have to hold down the red phone button for a few seconds to get the GPRS to disconnect. But with the 1.11UK rom all it takes is for you to click the red phone button and the connection is dropped. Example: If I'm on the Today Screen with GPRS connected, click the red phone button and voila, gprs is disconnected. Is this normal? I don't remember it disconnecting so easily with 1.06.

Any chance you give us a link to those pics? Pleaseeeeeeee
Ok, been tinkering around this evening concerning the GPRS connection issues and this is what I have thus far. First, Club IMate has new Operator Settings on their website. One of their techs was kind enough to e-mail it to me this afternoon and checking their website this evening shows T-Mobile ver1.6. Applied those settings and it seemed to do a better job at installing my VPN settings for internet3.voicestream.com. However, when I checked the Connections screen it listed My Isp with my VPN connection and My Work Network was setup for wap.voicestream.com. Ok, nice but I don't use the wap settings. Connecting through IE to wap.yahoo.com resulted in the TMo Wap connection to launch, but not my VPN connection. So I went back into Connection settings and set both Work and Internet to "My ISP". Upon doing this and selecting any website from IE, it wouldn't connect and give me the error "Make sure you have your modem installed blah, blah, blah". If I then press and held on the "G" and tapped connect, it connected just fine.
So that got me thinking about the Registry again and why in the Connection screen for both Internet and Private network, why there was no option for "The Internet", or "My Secure WAP" so forth and so on. When I had my XDA IIs, those where options. So I loaded PHM Registry to the device and went exploring. The first thing I found and deleted was in: \HKLM\Software\HTC\WModem. I deleted the Preset GPRS key. The next thing I found where all the Interent settings I just mentioned in:
\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\ConnMgr\Destinations\. There is listed "The Interent" (which I tried to create myself in Connections but it said it already existed) and My Secure Wap plus others that I had made. So for starters I deleted "The Internet" key and reset the device.
Went back into Connections and created a new network called The Internet and added my connection to internet3. I then switched it to only look at The Internet network. Launching IE again and trying to go to wap.yahoo.com. Again, I get the "Unable to Connect: Ensure that your modems are presentand inserted correctly, and no network card present".
So obvioulsy, my edits to the Registry made little difference. So again that got me thinking. Why would their be a WAP connection when I selected T-Mobile VPN during the new cab installation? Because it needs it!
I then went back into the Network Management screen under connections and left it set to The Internet for programs that auto connect to the internet and set it to My Work Network for the private network option. Since doing this I've had no issues when any connection while browsing. If I go to a WAP site it automatically connects to T-Mobile WAP connection. If I then decide to go to a full blown HTTP website, it automatically stops the WAP connection and launches the VPN one. There is no delay when it does this, well, maybe a second!
My thinking is (and, I'm no programmer or Registry master!) that the problem lies in the Registry settings for IE. Perhaps it runs deeper than that but if one of you Guru's could take a look perhaps we can get this ironed out once and for all. Thanks for listening!
Hi,
my GPRS connection is working, it connects without any problem but when i try to navigate with PIE then I can see the message "Opening" on the left lower corner but it just stays that way for a long time and the page never gets displayed. My e-mail works fine so that means i have GPRS connection and working. If i try navigating to a WAP site some pages get displayed and some other don't. If i connect via WiFi or via activesync then i can navigate without any problems. Based on my observations I suspect a problem with the MRU (Maximum receive Unit) of the TCPiP stack but i can not find on the registry where to change that.
Hope someone can help.
I used Tweak2K2 to set it in mine. Sorry I do not know the Reg setting.

I wonder whether your HTTP proxy port number is correct. I had same problem and I was using the advertised port number until I discovered there was another one that actually worked. I would suggest a port number but I'm O2 UK (it was `advertised as 80 but only actually worked on PIE with 8080)
Mike
You are not alone
Please check the following threads, both are related to our problem, unfortunely none of them gives a solution.

My GPRS connection doesn´t require an HTTP proxy server so Mike´s suggestion didn´t work for me. I contacted Movistar and they are not open to give support since I didn´t buy the device from them....
On the other hand, if somebody can provide the ROM reg settings and a brief instruction on how can be changed would be great
Hi Luiggi
Sorry you have not got it solved yet. I remembered your post and looked for it but did not find it - hoped you had a solution to offer - sadly not
Edit: I suppose you are certain about the proxy? I ask because mine will connect to GPRS just fine without it - BUT PIE does not unless it's set.
Mike
Maybe it is a Movistar problem
Interesting, so happens that my service provider is also Movistar; maybe they have done something different to their network settings. Any way, I was in the US recently and was able to use GPRS roaming although because the TyTN does not differentiates between GPRS and EDGE it could have been that it was using EDGE and that it why i could navigate using PIE.
The funny thing about this problem is that my e-mail works fine and my SPB whether also updates without problems, it is only the navigation with PIE that i have issues with. Based on my observations it seems to be that if the tcp packet is larger that a certain size it gets dropped by the tcp stack.
Not lucky so far
Hi Mike!
Movistar people told me that the don´t need proxy servers for the connections since they use Dynamic IP addresses (?). I´ve have tried a lot of different configurations but not luck so far, the comment posted above could be they key, now the big question is: What are the proper settings and how to modify the reg...?
Will reflashing the phone be the only solution?
Well looks like the options are narrowing down to reflashing the phone.... I'll give it a couple of days more to see if someone can give Us a hint on what to do.

I´m not sure about reflashing, actually I have two 8525 I paid to SIM unlock the 1st one so I still have the original ROM 1.34.505.1 and the symptoms are the same, I don´t know what ROM would be suitable to "solve" the problem in case this would be causing the partial lock.
New Finding
I´ve been trying a lot of things and I guess I´m close to the root cause. I strated from scratch with a hard reset and giving a soft reset before the 3 sec secreen of auto configuration, then I tried to set a connection in my ISP, I named it "The Internet" and when I hit the OK button I got a message saying that there was an existing connection setting under the same name!!! I couldn´t find such connection, so I´m pretty sure that the connection is hidden somewhere in the ROM and we need to disable it and create a new one or modify the reg to address a different connection consistent with our own network.... Any thoughts on this?

I mapped that one in Cingular, the MMS settings are self extracted from the extended ROM, if you want to get rid of it just do a hard reset and then a soft reset when the 3 sec message shows up, hope this can help you

I went thru all regs and I couldn´t find MRU or LCP (Link Control Protocol) settings, what disturbes me more is that I put my SIM in my 8125 and everything (IE. messenger, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) works wonderful!! I think I´ll put on sale my 8525.......
More findings
I do have GPRS connection, no doubt about it. I install Tonaya Iper in my phone and the software gives the ability to trace the route from my phone to the destination, for instance The route to www.gmail.com (216.239.63.19)
is as follows (I set the time [email protected]):
1.- 10.15.14.78
2.- 10.2.4.20
3.- 10.2.4.134
4.- 200.36.174.81
5.- 200.39.31.42 (mx-mesr-rt1.telefonica-data.com.mx)
6.- 213.140.50.233 (So-2-3-1-grtmtyma2.red.telefonica-wholesale.net
7.- Request timed out
8.- 213.140.43.25
9.- 213.140.43.225
10.- 213.140.36.45
11.- 213.140.37.57
12.- 64.233.123
13.- 66.249.94.8
14.- 72.14.233.123
15.- 71.14.233.123
16.- 216.239.63.19 (bp-in-f19.google.com)
When I try to trace the communication with a 1 second timeout the phone stalls for a while in server 213.140.50.233 and makes the traceability extremely slow.
My conclusión is that when the communication reach the server 213.140.50.233 this cause a delay and my phone can not continue to the final destination probably because the pre set delay in the application exceeds its timout parameter.
Any suggestions?

Today I use a SIM from the other mexican cell company (telcel), I just enter APN, user name and password and in a blink my 8525 flew thru PIE, hotmail, MS messenger, Gmail and everything!!! Conclusion:Movistar system or set ups are causing all the connection problems, I´ve spent hours in the phone with their wonderful engineers and none of them has been able to explain why Movistar can´t give a decent service to 8525 users.
Using the Traceroute feature of IPer I notice a very long delay to ping the Movistar router located in Madrid (213.140.50.233), there´s where I think the problem is.
You are right Luiggi...!
One of the guys here at the office also has a Dopod 838pro (I'm ussing a HTC TyTN) but with Telcel instead of Movistar...the push e-mail capabilities and the internet surf are really very good ...but with the GPRS of Movistar I recive my e-mails very delayed in the phone and also still unable to sing in to MSN messenger.
Thanks to your post now I know the trut; I was really thinking that maybe the TyTN was the problem (I mean, the HTC branded because the Dopod was functioning just very fine) I was even thinking in return it...
regards
Hummm I suspected that....
Well I think we have (a winner) an answer (partially), I will go back to Movistar and complain, I may not get any results from it but I really have no options since because of my work I travel a lot and the roaming pricing I get with them is way better that the other alternative. The funny thing about this issue is that other HTC phones do not have it. A co worker has a Wizard and he can navigate with PIE. Maybe it would be interesting to investigate what could be the difference or why other phones can navigate and Tytn can't.
Wizard works great!

I do my living buying and selling phones and I guess next time (tomorrow) I get a Wizard for sale I´ll spend enough time going thru the registry and routes to compare it with the Hermes. Would you guys mind to run IPer and check if the afore mentioned router or server with the problem is common for all of us?
I already wrote a not very nice letter to Movistar, probably they are shocked because normally their tournaround time for an answer is less than 24hrs and this time is taking longer. Next letter I´m going to be addressing the Director or whoever is the top dog.
How do I get/ run the aplication mentioned???
I would like to help to figure out what the problem is or help you guys to get to a solution...so, where can I find and how do I use the software luiggi is mentioning??
Is it free or with a trial version???

Hi,
is it normal for the TP not to connect automatically to my 3G network whenever I open programs such as Opera or Google Maps ?
it worked fine with my previous Touch Diamond.
now i need to go to Comm Manager and manually activate Data Connection
very awkward
Am I alone with this problem ?
Eventhough my data connection is on, i cannot send/receive mail, open sites etc etc.
I need to open connections and to "manage" (= go through the settings without changing anything) existing connections before it works again for a short period.
strange, bug ?
I can tell you mine connects (dials-up) automatically, works like a charm
The problem I am having is after a soft reset I need to recreate the connection (write in APN again), as it simply won't connect
do not worry about the poor feeback around here; Palm Treo Pro has a strange user pool, not in to flashing, modding, or pretty much anything, just application and accessories (I am the only one to notice that? Is that beacuse the users came from Palm OS platform and are not used to reap the benefits of this?)
nawww...I'd say b/c it is targeted for business users. I may not be a typical business user but the older I get, I am. I can say that I like to get a phone that works for me, not the other way around. The treo is just that. Not too much modding these days...but that's just me.
about the data connection, that is not normal. Have you tried a hard reset? Sounds like something is wrong.
thx Mike !
forgot that one, I used the Treo straight out of the box without a prior hard reset when I brought it home to Morocco from the US.
a hard reset seems to do the job !
but I have not yet re-installed my software like SPB Mobile Shell, Slovo Ed Dictionary, Opera mobile beta and treo BT update.
lets see how it goes one by one !

This is exactly the problem that I am having too. Have you found a way to sort it out?
My phone preconfigures a network when I enter a sim card. The sim setting would be correct for my provider, but I have my own network settings combining corporate and provider settings. The phone however kicks them out every time I start it up.
I just want to kick this wizard out, but HOW?!?! Can't find it in the registry etc.
You could try unlocking the extended rom and then deleting the carrier.pxp file that is in there. That would stop *any* configuration I think - but htat might be more of a nuisance if you end up roaming.
(This is a GSM-specific answer by the way. Don't know about CDMA)
John
Solved the issue by going into the registry. If I can't edit the wizard, I can at least kill it's configuration. Just look for the setup the wizard suggests and edit it to the right settings.
Could you tell me how you got that wizard disabled? You said, that you've bee in the registry. What keys are there to change?
disable connection setup
I had the same problem as well, and seeming there seemed to be no answer thought I'ld post where the keys were on my phone (HTC 3600i) this will be different for the palm but might give someone a starting point
HKCU\Software\HTC\Connectionsetup
On the HTC there are several keys that seem to relate to auto start and auto detect, I set them all to 0 and haven't had another problem.
Also just try searching the registry for connectionsetup thats how i found it.

Hope you can help. This is driving me nuts.
Out of the blue, I cannot access Marketplace or twitter updates. Email adn Web are working fine over same connection.
See this video for the problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxMmdWElZZc
(Sorry in advance that it came out side ways?!)
Its the same on wifi, makes no difference what connection I'm on.
I installed Total Commander and poked around but didn't delete anything etc. Just opened and closed folders.
Anyone got any idea for me?
I'm at a loss. I feel like its my fault but I've gone over and over the settings and did a soft reset. Not willing to do a hard reset just yet as I don't want to install everything all over again.
Thanks for any advice/help in advance!
wab.
This just gets weirder and more frustrating. What have I done? I downloaded "The Channer" with an excellent wifi connection and it says it cannot connect to the internet, asks me can it use cellular connection and still can't connect? Something seriously wrong here. Help!
I have a video of the above uploading to YouTube right now. Seriously, some advice appreciated. Ta.
Edit: Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAygBKFydME
I think it may have something to do with an accidental deletion of files in ConnMgr in Total Commander?: See that mess here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6_9jcAAzbE
I didn't hit delete on any of the files there. Just pressed them and then they disappeared...
Can Anyone help? Could someone please look in ConnMgr to see what files are there? Thanks!
Dont soft reset. Power off and power on. Repeat if necessary.
Thanks Gavinfabl. I've power cycled about 5 times to no avail :-(
Goto settings tab on home screen, select menu, all settings, connections, wifi and turn on from here. Also, try rebooting your router. Can you connect on 3g signal?
Also try going into the connections applet, and edit current and untick connect via proxy if ticked.
Hi again, I have wifi on and it doesn't make any difference. I've rebooted router, can get mail and web fine, also wifi router at work is fine, again mail and web only. Twitter, Marketplace and The Channer all give an immediate unable to connect error. I fear its something more serious. I've no issues with my 3G or HSDPA signal. I've checked and unchecked proxer server and it makes no difference. All logical courses action (to me at least) are proving fruitless.
So, I uninstalled Marketplace and reinstalled it from the mp.windowsphone.com site, restarted my phone (automatically) and then did a soft reset.. now Marketplace won't even open although its listed in the start menu. I am seriously about to throw this phone out the window...
Was going to do a hard reset. Discovered MyPhone won't connect either to backup my stuff. What is going on???
I had same problem with Marketplace and Facebook. Everything else connected fine over wifi and 3G. I ended up doing a hard reset and it has been fine ever since. It was the only way I could get around the problem
i have the exact same problem ive spent hours on the phone with msoft to no avail you have to be a very special kind of stupid to be a customer service rep at microsoft man they are brain dead anyway if someone gets this figured out please post and a hard reset on mine did not work
What other apps have you installed getwet as a matter interest. Are you having the exact same issue as in my videos? Trying to find a commonality here. Its not good that a hard reset did not work for you! I was planning on doing that this weekend.
Happend to me to.
FB, market and widget stopped working but a hard reset fixed it!?
No clue what made it happen, I've installed most apps again and this time it works fine.
