WTF? Application Data\HTC\HTC Album\Cache is huge! - Touch HD General

Currently running Kwbr's Vanilla Series ROM based on WM6.1 and TF3D v2.
I noticed that since installation, the size of the Sprite Backup file has increased by about 10Mb even though I haven't installed any software or other files!
Investigating further, it would appear that one culprit appears to be Application Data\HTC\HTC Album\Cache
I have renamed the Cache directory and it seems to get recreated without a problem. But just wanted to know if this was safe to do and if anyone else had a huge Cache directory also.
I have about 1Gb of photos on my SD card and play quite a few videos.

As you might have noticed, there's an app in these new ROMs, which starts automaticall with the system, albumsearcher.exe.
If you don't need the cache, try removing the app's key from HKCU\Software\HTC\BootLauncher\
Bu the cache will start to re-create each time when you open Album, I guess.
By the way, WTF is this thread doing in "Blackstone ROM development"?

Thread moved.

Thanks for the info Dmitry. Does the cache just speed up photo viewing when you subsequently view photos that have already been viewed?
Don't know if I'm just blind but I can't see any reference to albumsearcher under the BootLauncher key. Although the process is running in the background. Have tried scanning for albumsearcher in the entire registry but no luck.
Will probably just get ClearTemp to delete the directory automatically.
Yeah, couldn't decide where to put the thread and am obviously out voted on my final decision . Thought that as the question was only applicable to those of us that flash ROMs that that was the best place.

History file on device memory!

Hello,
i have a file called History in the main device memory and it keeps going larger and larger every day! it seems like it is a log file for every time i soft reset my JasJar. i can't delete it or rename it and the only way to open it is to copy and paste in other folder and then i can open the copy.
can anyone advise how can i delete it or disable logging events?
Regards.
Internet Explorer history perhaps? You periodically need to clear the history cache from IE if you don't want your memory to fill up. I haven't found a way to put a limit on it. It just keeps growing till the whole friggin memory is full.
hi,
thanks for your reply but this is not the case! it is stand alone file which keeps recordings a log file of each time the device reset.
i had all kinds of i-mates before but this is the first time i see this file!
Hi,
I have raised this question many months ago. I had it on my old ROM and since upgrading to the latest Orange ROM i still have it.
The answer to my old post was that it was a debugging flag that was left enabled by the ROM - so far I have been unable to find it in the registry.
The only option might be to backup your device, hard reset and when you restore from the backup see if there is an option to ignore restoring the history.txt file.
Its very annoying and before I upgraded my ROM the file was at about 750K - now its at 55k, and thats within about 2 months.
Let me know if you find anything else about it.
Matt
Hi,
i have also tried to find it in the reg but no luck! so what backup software are you using?
many thanks.

I have only used Sprite Backup and this does now allow selective file restoration in the root directory.
Might be worth seeing if SPB backup will give the option to be more selective.

First thread in this wonderful forum : Storage Space problem

In the beginning I want to thanks all the people responsible for this wonderful forum. It is extremely helpful for the kind of N00bi like me.
My last windows Mobile machine was the HTC Universal and before it I had the Wallaby and Blue Angel after those machines I ended my relationship with windows mobile until I saw the HTC HD2 which brought me back form symbian and iPhone.
Now to the strange problem, I have been using the hd2 for 3 weeks and I am very happy customer until I have noticed something which is very odd. Losing internal memory space as the time passes. although I did all the tricks to transfer the temporary cache memory to the Storage Card it did not help me at all and I am still loosing space over time.
I did transfer the opera cache to the storage card and that saved me about 3 MB and that is it
I looked for more tricks in the forum but all I found was the opera thing and nothing else. so can anyone please help me with this problem
Thanks
mrnet_01
how do you transfer the opera cache to the memory card? and for internet explorer as well???
and how do i clear temporary files/cache/etc. ??

this maybe can help u
the default directory of opera cache is
\Windows\opera9\cache\
so u must change this default directory
1. open opera browser
2. type on address ---->> opera:config
it will open advance opera configuration setting
3. tap userpref
4. find opera cache and change ur cache directory 4
I prefer to \Storage Card\Program Files\opera9\cache\
dont forget to tap save button
sory for my bad english

It might be due to Youtube temp file? I noticed a 20+mb sized temp.3gp file in my youtube folder after watching quite a number of videos.
^^^^
has been done but still the same
Please guys I really need help.

Are you saying that your storage space is disappearing, without you installing software or using applications that cache data?
i believe that is what he is saying
Try to connect to your HD2 with ActiveSync.
From Windows Explorer on your PC, you can browse the folders on your device. Make sure that you can view Hidden Files, system files etc.
Right Click each folder and request the properties. This way you can view which folder is taking so much of your precious RAM.
In my case for instance, the folder \Application data\HTC\HTC Album\Cache is 28Mb.
Don't know if I can remove these files though
I think that folders that are actualy part of the ROM will show 0 bytes.
Anyway, hope this tip can help you.

Did you find other folders that take up a lot of space ?
I know it's a pain to check all folders manually, but your storage must be disappearing somewhere...
Have you downloaded anything from the MS MarketPlace, all apps from there get installed onto the device as default and this cannot be changed. The app can be moved usine file manager (or any other alternative). I would go to add/remove programs and remove all unnesscary ones and start installing again ensureing they are going to the Storage Card. Also stay away from MS Marketplace (until this is resovled)
My albums cache and google maps cache were about 40Mb... Both in Application Data. Deleted it, hadn't had any issues.
I wish I could move HTC album and Google Maps cache to the memcard.
have you installed HTC hotfixes for messaging and camera - these take up close to 10 - 15M and you wont be able to see these as they replace DLL's and files in the ROM by using user memory.
Very interesting! I just reclaimed 39MB space by deleting 2 files in the Google Maps cache. I ran Google Maps again without any problem and after closing the application still had the same amount of memory.

how do i free up space on my phone?!

ok. i've recently started getting a message come up saying that i am almost out of space on my phone. when i checked it out there was 0.5mb remaining and 339mb used up!
so started deleting programmes i don't use via the application manager, and looked into any caches aroun that i could clear. it hasn't made much differrnce at all .
can someone tell me where all these huge files are or how i can free up a lot more room?
also it seems the g sensor has stopped working in any browser!
please can someone help. i'm tempted to start from scratch, but with the t mobile or vodafone stock roms (i'm on virgin and there's not been a rom update for a long while)
please help! i love my hd2 but i'm so tempted to go over to android on desire at this rate. just problem aftet problem, and i've got this phone for anothet 1.5 years! i just want it to work amazingly.
many thanks

whoops the total storage is 180mb and the total free storage is 0.5 mb
did you check your ~recyclebin map? if not set to not use it all deleted files will go there
is tbere a recycle bin?? if so where is it?
i also looked in the windows foldet and it appears copilot is in there but it won't let me delete it . it's 6.5mb. . .
I think the recycle bin is a Resco thing!!
I’d had this before and found a temp file hogging 99mb of space on the phone memory. There is a search program in the start menu that will find these large files.
Application Data > HTC > HTC Album > Cache – is another source of memory hogging goodness. This doesn’t affect the operation of the Sense Tab, just grows every time you browse your photos. There is a hack on this site to move the cache to the storage card...
Other than that I would install a programme to clean out the temp files and folders. I use SKTools (have done for about 3 years) think it works perfectly, there are other freeware alternatives out there.

Chances are your device memory is clogged up with temporary files...first things first, look at a program called cleartemp as it'll help clean most of the cache files
Readtboy2000's thread and move your opera cache AND pictures from device to storage card AND delete Opera9 and OperaL file (reading all of his tips/tricks HELP a lot)
next, move your album cache using a cab developed by tune4 found here
Also, use cleanRam so you don't have to soft reset tooooo many times
and report back to us
+1 with damnshah
and install all of the application for your HD2 in the mSD card
oh thank you all!
it worked! i know have 112mb free instead of 0.5 mb!
now if only there was a new officiall WWE rom update my life would be complete....
Darren
Is there any way to move Youtube temp folder to storage card?
Mike
You should really give a custom ROM a go, my Energy ROM uses less than 50 megs on the internal memory. A couple of times a week I delete the album cache which can use 15megs or so, and it runs lovely and smooth.

Help! Manila photo tab doesn't work

Please Help, I'm using HTC_Asia_TW_1.66 stock rom on my HD2, after installing some apps and mods, it won't boot after a soft reset. I restored the system by SPB backup to earlier status and then all comes back, the phone works again except the photo tab remains blank (black).
Maybe that's because I didn't make a "full backup" but only "system" level by SPB, may this lead to miss something on restore?
Here is what I have now : In the right side there is still counter showing "1/99" (means there are 99 photos?) but nothing shows up. The camera icons on the top-right side are still there too, and they works. HTCAlbum works too. On the bottom the two menu text remain "phone" and "menu", which belong to the home tab.
All other tabs work just fine.
I tried to delete the album cache files but no luck.
As mentioned I got system backups from last stats, I'm thinking extract something from it to replace current files (exe, dlls ?) but I've no idea about what to do~
Any helps are very appreciated...
Sorry for my English...

Same problem
I have exactly the same problem. I just noticed it today. I'm using the WWE 1.66 ROM and everything's been fine.
I have no idea what caused it, and would love some help.
Thanks,
David
The symptoms look very suspiciously caused by the installation of the landscape rotation tweak, TX Total Landscape.cab
I had installed this particular cab before but had since removed.
Same problem
I have the same problem with my hd2... but I did not installed the TX Total Landscape.cab.
I think the problem started when I tried the GTX white theme.cab... but even after its removal, the photo tab still doesn't work.
Is this a bug caused by Cookie's Home Tab 1.8.5???
I really don't know how to solve this...

Thanks Zentury, I think this may be the most possible reason. I didn't use the Tx one for landscape fonction but I do have installed another enablelandscape.cab. This one may cause the same problem. but I can't confirm this cause I've switched my stock rom to energy rom yesterday. thanks anyway!
I tried several ROMs - 2 of miri's, and 2 energy ROMs and all 4 of them lead to freezing of my ""pictures and video sense tab, even after a fresh flashing. I flash my device after I format my SD card, remove it along with the SIM, perform task 29 => ROM flashing and then hard resetting. I tried different compatible radio versions, 2 of the roms were with CHT...still the same bug - pics and video tab freezes few seconds after finding the pictures on my SD card. I think what is common in all these 4 ROMS is the presence of a screen rotating app - in the last ROM (Energy Reference) it is called just "Rotate screen". Anyone know how to disable it?
drkalo,
It's weird cause I'm using Energy's rom (JUN22 Cookie version) and the photo tab problem on the last stock rom is totally gone!
I don't think it's easy to disable the rotation from these cooked roms, maybe you can ask within the specific rom threads.
But I think if I have no problem with energy then you wouldn't... I'd suggest formating your SD card but you've done it. I suppose you copied files back to the card after formatting. Now it sounds like a file error. Did you try deleting any non-image files on your photo folder (DCIM) ? especially album.cache. Move out the videos too, they could be problematics. When using HD2's camcorder I've tried saving videos in other formats and that freezed my phone.
Dear noixdarec,
As you suggest I copied back all of my SD card content after formatting. I deleted the cache files but din't delete the whole DICM folder. Now I did that and then I made several new photos and videos and - VOILA! The tab works without freezing! Never thought of that and I thank you VERY, VERY MUCH! Mersi beaucoup!
Dear drkalo, je t'en pris (you're welcome) ! So glad that you solved your problem, have a good day~

Go to any Google search bar and type in "Clear Temp for Windows Mobile" this is an app that will clear all of the temperary folders and files on your HD2. It allows you to choice wich apps you want to clear the temp files and folders too so if you don't want to clear a certain set for a certain app like YouTube for instance you can uncheck it. Also do a seperate search for "Clean Ram for Windows Mobile" it frees up ram on your HD2 so you can keep your memory level with only the app tht you are currently using. This is not a task manager although when you run this app it will close all open apps at that time. I use to get the same message using opera but don' t get it at all now that I use these apps daily. Also while you have Oprera open touch on the soft key at the bottom right hand corner of the screen then touch on the same spot again when tbe bar comes up this should bring up a pop up box select settings from there and then select advanced. In advanced you can set the cache size to maximum this will help resolve your issue too.

This is very good advice. I was under the impression that the downloads folder was cleared when you deleted the cache or used ClearTemp. Out of curiosity I just checked my download folder and it still has my last five downloads there and I have cleared my cache and used ClearTemp atleast three times today.
Another way of not having this problem with the download folder is to not select open when you download something. If you select save as you can rename the download what hou want to name it and choose where to save it at. I try to save my downloads on my SD card.
Thank You everyone!!
