Hello. Here is a different quesion for the Weather application. Is it possible to configure to only update when connected to Wifi. Or is there a better program out there that will do this. I do not have a data plan with my service so don't want to occur additional charges. Thanks.
I have T-Mobile Wing with a T-Zone plan. Setting the proxy of T-Mobile Data connection to 216.155.165.50:8080 allows most of the important apps to connect to the Internet including Google Map, Opera Mini, Media Player, etc. However, few programs like the Weather Watcher still can only download weather data from the Wifi or USB ActiveSync connection and not via the T-Mobile Data connection. Just wonder about the reason and if there is any remedy on the phone. Thanks for any hint.
I had the same problem, but the cab in this thread corrected the issue.

Thanks for your hint. I already applied the CAB and HT Weather works. However, I am using a really nice application call Weather Watcher by Mike Singer and it can not get the weather data through T-Zone proxy, only through Wifi or ActiveSync. Maybe it does need a patch like the HTC Weather patch.
Sorry about the misunderstanding and thinking you was talking about HTC weather. I don't use that particular program as I like SPB weather better but noticed if adding my city which isn't in their data base by zip code-it won't connect either. Though if using the closest city to me in their data base I don't have any issue connecting via proxy.
So far I don't have a 3g plan. I would like to update the weather/stock data everytime the HD is sync with my PC with internet.
I can do this manually but it's better if it's auto-refreshed.
(it would be even better if the data gets refreshed every certain minutes when sync)
no one knows it? no one needs it?

One possible solution would be to setup your device to download weather/stock automatically (for example every hour) and disable 3G/internet activity by using NoData app.
This means your device won't be able to auto-update when not connected via activesync as you have disabled 3G activity but will be able to update when connected via activesync. Just toggle off internet & WAP on NoData

thanks, I tried this myself.
but every time I open the weather tab, I got an error msg says that there is not i-net connection. this is a bit annoying ...
the quickGPS works much better, when I sync with a PC, it starts it self and fetch the data in background from i-net.
yeah! anyone knows how to get rid of that message everytime i go to the weather tab?
Anyone have a better solution out there yet. I would also want the Stocks and Weather update with every Sync. I know it does it when the Weather Tab is selected, I would just rather it automatically update even if left on the home screen on every Docking.
Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone had heard of an app which does the following or would perhaps like a good idea for an app if it doesn't exist (i have looked everywhere):
- Automatically scans for open WiFi networks
- Tries to connect to open networks
- if connection successful + ping google.com successful (to see if internet available) ELSE add to list of networks not to try again
- THEN once connected run auto-sync to download emails etc
- also have the option to run other applications on connect which require sync like news RSS, facebook feeds etc.
- after sync switch off or sleep WiFi for x minutes
I would find this immensely useful when I am on holiday in other countries. Basically its a massive pain keep getting my phone out to scan for available networks (even with notification) and try each of them then sync everything after. With the app described above you could just leave you phone in pocket and let the app do all the work.
Does this make sense?
Thanks in advance
Bridgstfer.
Get a data plan and stop robbing peoples connections or wifi hotspots or you can just do it all manually. It's not that bloody hard really.
I think you might have missed the point:
...immensely useful when on HOLIDAY (ie no data) in other countries....you could just leave you phone in pocket and let the app do all the work (ie connecting to free wifi hotspots and syncing when available)
I seem to have unwanted apps connecting to my 3G service every day. According to 3G Watchdog the apps are:
Network Location com.android.qxdmlog
HTC Message Uploader
HTC Sense
I use APNDroid, and use it to turn off 3G at all times. I also have Auto-Sync disabled in my Accounts and Sync settings. I have Background Data enabled, however, as disabling it seems to stop the Market app working.
How can I detect and stop the rogue app from connecting each day?
Had the same problem.
I solved it with that two app's.
TrafficStats and DroidWall.
The first tell me, which one goes out and the firewall (DroidWall) allowed me to stop that for wifi or umts or both.
But! You need custom Kernel to use the firewall!
Ok, hope could help you.

3G Watchdog also tells me which apps are using the connection (as per my first post), but what I'm trying to work out it how to stop it?
DroidWall?
Give a try, it works.

And no, i dont knew to stop that, cos it would generet a lot og problem to deinstall this stock software, why dont try to make them blind with a firewall?

purpose ?
what is the purpose in disallowing sense to use data ? doesn't it need it to update widgets and such ?
also
if you're going to disallow it access to updates, why use sense ?
I don't think setting up additional layers of applications backgrounded will save any battery life (hint) if that is the intent. take a read into exactly what background data is used for before you start denying acess.
also, those are not rogue applications.
Actually I'm not using Sense - I'm using Launcher Pro Plus and shooting for a vanilla Android experience, as I'm on a par-per-connection data contract.

I just downloaded Droidwall but it needs root access and I haven't been brave enough to root my Desire Z yet. I've seen some pretty complex guides to doing this - are there any simple options?
I think any kind of network blockage requires root as it is suppised to communicate with linux internally somehow? I forgot how it worked but I do remember it needs root access to use a wall.
Love the Overclocked "nonsense" CM7
Yes you need root and s-off and a customer kernel.
It seems, it is a longway.....but no worry! This forum is a great help on your side! Just use the search option for the word above and you will sucess.
Have fun

My firmware version is 1.82.161.1, and from ready instructions on rooting I would need to downgrade to 1.34 before I can root - do you think it is worth the trouble? i.e. will rooting the phone give me alot more flexibility?
So...to return to where I came in...does anyone know which settings I can change to stop the unwanted services from accessing my 3G connection every day?
The following is the list that I get from 3G Watchdog:
1. Phone
Dialer Storage
SIM toolkit
Field test
2. Network Location
com.android.qxdmlog
Settings
Settings Storage
Accounts & Sync
Setup
HTC Hub
Android System
HTC Function Test Program 1.04g
HTC checkin service
Brcm bluetooth services
Google backup transport
VPN services
Upgrade Setup
CLock
3. DCS service
Calendar storage
Customisation settings provider
Open Sense plugin manager
HTC location service
com.htc.dcs.service.stock
Stocks
HTC weather sync provider
Friend Stream
com.htc.provider.settings
Weather provider
Peep
Customisation setup
DCS utility component
Weather agent service
HTC media uploader
Connect to PC
Facebook to HTC sense
Flickr
To confirm, I already have Background Data disabled on the Accounts & Sync page, and have also disabled data connections using APNDroid. Neither of these measures is stopping the above services from using my 3G connection.

i think your app is mistaken. when data is disabled, and sync is OFF, there should be nothing like this happening. they may -try- and the app report it, but there should be no data what so ever.
try accessing a webpage, or refreshing the content of any of those applications. i think you will find they cannot.
