First wait and see if it will get 6.5!!!
So far all that's know about WM7 is that it's planned for sometime next year. Whether it will be compatible with the current hardware, or whether MS continues WM after being crushed to pieces from the combined forces of Android, Symbian, MacOS/iPhone, BlackBerry, webOS, ALP, ... - nobody knows...
(Unless maybe Nostradamus, but I don't know that either... )
it will work..we just need to work on it
btw 6.5 is up in rom section
cheers
6.5 is beta not the actual one, have to wait and see at MWC09
so when WM6.5 is released...we ll be able to have it on our current Xperia x1 or do we need to buy a new piece?
The more interesting question is whether there'll be an official and legal update.
If there's an update for a technically similar device, like the Touch HD or maybe even Diamond2, there'll very likely be a cooked ROM for the X1.
But first of all, Microsoft has to release 6.5...
It will still take some time for MS to release WM7. My guess is - not before summer 2010. And devices shipping WM7 maybe christmas 2010.
Until then, WM 6.5 will have to do. However, if the performance will not increase, I will stick with WM 6.1. The speed of all WM 6.5 betas is imo just awfully slow and I have my doubts that this will change with the final version. Even the work-in-progress models with an obviously newer OS version - Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2 seen on YouTube - are not as fast as current WM 6.1 phones.
So lets wait and see. My guess is, that I will switch to another phone when WM 7 is available.
I think I will change another phone when WM 7 is available....
Maybe thant time, there will be a phone w/ 2GHz cpu
The thing is that X1 is not capable for some features designed for WM7.
The most noticably: the gestures - X1 does not have any accelerometers.
My best bet is to get another phone at then

Gestures will supposedly work by way of built-in camera. Accelerometers are not required. At least, this is what the WM7 info leak stated.
... do you, the devs of xda developers think it is feisable to run a WM 6.5 ROM at optimum performance on a Touch HD? Okay so we dont have the dedicated Windows Key, but surely we have the spec to run things such as the honeycomb
why ? Where told HTC to not suppport HTC Touch HD any further ?
hans
Did they? how silly of them.
dontworry key mapping is trivial
So, any links to back up that HTC won't release a updated rom?
link #1 - MS statement
"no devices in the market today will receive official 6.5 updates"
link #2 - HTC statement
"customers of the Touch Pro2 and Touch Diamond2 will get 6.5 upgrades for free"
So forget about official upgrade for out Blackstone..
So that means no WM6.5 with right updates for us huh?
No. To be honest, why should they? It's a major upgrade, and would cost HTC money to implement.
Bug fixes we are entitled to, not a new OS.
sorry to say
this has always been the same with WM.....
GET USED TO IT
Well I can't say that I'm particulary bothered about missing out on a free official upgrade to 6.5. From what I've seen so far Microsoft have just done what we've all be doing for some time now, that is making the OS more 'finger friendly'. I'm quite content with my HD now after installing some apps and tweaks to achieve this. Most from the pages of this wonderful forum.
And as for the honeycomb style today page.....they can keep it. Ugly!
To be honest why bother with 6.5 !!! Like all recent upgrades from MS it is just eye candy and nothing more...... Nothing radical or new just a knock off of the eye phone... The HTC Touch screen is more novel than MS....... Be nice if they innovated.....
Im not so bothered on the today section its the better finger menus i think will be good.
I think WM 6.5 looks great and IS A MUST for the Touch HD.
I also think it is absolutely customer ... off giving not wm 6.5 as a update - its ok to take money for it.
As you XDAlers always complain about apple - look at them - they improve the OS every 3 month and give new features and bug fiexes.
We with our nice HTC gadgets don-t get updates or new features.
I have my htc touch hd and love it, but the software is a hell of sloe any you can write as much as you want - WinMo 6.1 ist fuc... slow.
Take the G1 and see what the hardware is capable

They have to. OS X Mobile does not have proper Bluetooth support, multitasking support, MMS support, copy&paste support, etc., so most advanced user are really angry.
Windows Mobile, on the other hand, is mature OS. There is not much reason to upgrade from Win Mobile 6.1 to 6.5.
I've already talked with the manager of the distributor (father of a friend) here in my country before I bought the phone. They really said that they will not give updates to get the 6.5. but if xda-devs can make a rom out of it, it still wont be official. Hopefully MS solves the auto answer call when taking out the phone, i hate using s2u2 cuz there are sometimes delay and wastes a couple of rings (caller side)
Come on guys. 6.5 ? Honeycomb interface and that is about it, right ? Who cares since most of advanced users use 3rd-party UI anyway. It has FingerMenu version too and IE 6, but they are already here on HD
And since Diamond2/Pro2 will have 6.5 - HD will have it too. May be not officially, but ...
Listen ... I had HTC Wizard with WM5, which had never been officially upgraded. Did not stop me from have it with WM6.1 Pretty sure even Wizard will have 6.5, why not HD ? Dont worry about it.
is the ui all that 6.5 will bring? no additional backend features/settings?
Till yesterday i wanted WM6.5 in HD badly... actually, i still want it.
But now what i really really really want is the new TF3D
Jesus. Are only novice users writing here You want WinMo 6.5 Head over to the ROM section of THIS forum and you will get at least 2 WinMo 6.5 ROM's TODAY They are with early BETA versions of the OS, so you can see things others will MAYBE see in 7-8 months. That's the really cool thing about HTC devices. You always get the good stuff first
On the other hand...HTC actually offers WinMo ugrades for premium phones. Many WinMo 5 phones (including my old Artemis) got an official WinMo 6 upgrade and my Polaris recieved WinMo 6.1 as did the Kaiser, HTC Touch etc.
So stop complaining. The VERY first WimMo 6.5 ALPHA leaked for the...Blue Angel. For those not knowing this great device: The Blue Angel is shipped originaly with WinMo 2003 (not even SE) and is 5 years old.
Here see a Video people demonstrating WM 6.5

Its not so well performing, as I hoped, maybe it'll get better.
I sure hope they do!
I really wanna use the marketplace!
I don't think so but I would really like it!
anyways, as long as Diamond 2 & Touch PRO 2 get updated (and they will), we will have a nice custom rom for us
2 words for the people that 'think SE will'.....
.....DREAM ON !
I think they will. Plus there are the custom roms if all else fails.
I think they will, because they allready have provided us with 1 update and there is another one in the making.
So they are trying to make an effort.
And either way, we will have a rom with 6.5. Heck, we allready have
They don't. Its like win on PC - if U buy win98 U can't upgarde to winME for free. Licences problem. But dont worry - we find WM 6.5 for xperia on this forum
They will
Microsoft offers the update for free and it´s up to SE if they want to give it away!
In a chat with Microsofts nordic Business Area Manager Peter Wissinger he gave us this answer:
Jan Johannesson: Hej, Kan jag uppgradera min Xperia X! till Mobile 6,5. mvh Jan Johannesson
Peter Wissinger: Nej - Sony Ericsson har inte aviserat att X1 skall få en uppgradering. Tycker dock att den är grymt bra som den är.

Jan Johannesson: Hello, Can I upgrade my Xperia X! to Mobile 6.5. Best regards Jan Johannesson
Peter Wissinger: No - Sony Ericsson have not announced that X1 shall get an upgrade. Do, however, think that it is bloody good as it is.

What about WinMo7 on Xperia?
I saw this post on Engadget.Com
I think lots of XDA-dev.com visitors know this site.
On Engadget they've spotted a video about Microsoft with (probably) Windows Mobile 7.
On that video, I saw a man (walking down the street) with Xperia X1 on it
Although this is just a video ... but it would be cool to have WinMo7 on Xperia
Just look for yourself

Reckon ur missing an option for voting: an option for "I hope SE produces an upgrade!"
Seriously though, i see two camps here. There are XDA members who say "nope, no upgrade" (cause of X2, too costly etc), and those that say "deffo upgrade" (cause of R3A, OS from MS is free, etc).
Who knows, but i sure hope they do. Otherwise our awesome chefs will have one ported from who knows where in little more than a few hours.
Makes you think doesn't it.. it can't be that hard to make a rom now can it?? (excluding testing of course - but there's an idea.. maybe Sony Ericsson can release an alpha version to XDA - with all the users on the forum we can have it bullet proof tested within days!)
Not a chance.
1. It's pointless to update an outdated product with new system if SE can't make profit out of this action.
2. Since HTC is the ODMer, SE have to pay HTC again for making the new ROM
3. WM6.5 and WM7 require some special hardware design which X1 doesn't have. And M$ even require new WM logo on specfic place of all new WM6.5 hardware
4. SE have to pay twice the lisencing fee to M$.
5. Not good to SE's new phones (not only WM X2, but also other high-end ones)
I think they will, because Sony Ericsson want the Xperia to be their high class series. And they won't be able to compete against other brands, if they don't give their users updates and good service.
I dont think we will get 6.5.
Cos in this economy sitsuation SE probly will effort more to selling new phones, and especially to new Idou.
Since Xperia aint 100% SE phone like upcoming Idou will.

SE have made plenty profit with the high price that we paid. Also, MS have dropped the requirement for the WM Logo (check engadgetmobile / pocketnow / wmpoweruser).
You might be right on the ODM aspect. HTC have been..painful (ref: Kaiser issues).
On your last point hopefully SE's new phones have more than just a ROM update to get people to buy them. Besides - a company that has goodwill for supporting their phones will have 10 points in my book over a company that doesn't. No names mentioned.
As HTC have no plans for either the Pro or Diamond (v1) to have 6.5 (same age as the X1) and based on past performance from SE I really don't expect 6.5 from Sony Ericsson directly.

i am sorry but since when the X1i is the same age as the Pro and the Diamond???
The latter two are a lot older phones and their specs are much lower too compared to the X1i. If i remember correctly MS specifically mentioned the required specs to run 6.5 and neither the Pro or the Diamond fit within those specs but the X1 does
No, it won't, not officially anyway.
It'll get it inofficially, with custom ROMs.

Then you weren't around when I was having to make the choice between getting the X1 or the Pro. At most a month between them, and that's because the X1 was late.
the x1 is the same age as the htc hd and thats not getting a upgrade.
its not going to happen.
1 - sony will argue that it was made for 6.1 and there is no reason to upgrade.
2 - sony want to sell there new phone
3 - the cost would be too high to make a new 6.5 rom for a 6.1 device (the r3 is just improving on what is already there, thay have already overcome most of the problems in the x1 rom and not going to start again with a 6.5 rom)
I think artesea is right! Going by SE's past they wont release anything!
I remember seeing you on my-symbian around with that whole p990 fiasco. I had a m600.
But I dont worry about that official crap anyway This poll should've been on the official SE page but not on xda-developers...where the url is already the answer to the question!
Long live xda-developers
"...Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, stated last week at the CTIA Wireless 2009 trade show, “We expect all the major operators to continue to support Windows phones going forward. In fact, by this fall, when Windows Mobile 6.5 releases, we'll have over 10 phones available in the U.S. alone, and you'll see that number continue to grow.”
Said line of Windows Mobile 6.5-supporting devices will include the HTC Touch Pro 2 and Touch Diamond 2, two handsets that have been announced since the MWC show in February, and there will also be the Elektrobit Satellite phone, which should come with the OS. In addition, a wide range of existing Windows Mobile 6.1 devices are also slated for upgrade to the upcoming platform, and among them we can count the HTC Touch Pro, the AT&T Fuze, and the HTC Touch Diamond.
For what it's worth, there will indeed be three new mobile phones released with the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform on them, yet it is uncertain whether more such phones will come out later this year, or the “ten phones” Robbie Bach mentioned also include the upgradeable ones. There are some companies that announced their support for Windows Mobile this year, such as HP or LG, but no details on upcoming devices from them made it into the wild yet..."

My Opinion:
As we know Sony Ericsson was very dedicated to make X1 as a very high-end phone to compete with iPhone, Blackberry, and G1. And were trying to get the latest and best windows mobile software for Xperia as WinMo 6.5 was already in plans during development of X1 (rumors all around about this on web). But 6.5 was yet not ready by X1's release so they went with customized 6.1 instead. Now Windows Mobile will be coming out at end of 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2009 and matter of 6.5 on Xperia just depends on how much Sony Ericsson is dedicated to X1 and its "maintenance" phase (known as most expensive for companies) especially when last month Sony Ericsson were running into financial issues and almost considering a split between Sony and Ericsson. But the good news are 1st X1 is still SE's most recent high-end device, 2nd the new R3A software is still to come and since beginning of this month SE enters back the Korean market with new set of devices and one of them is specially customized Xperia X1 for Korea, so X1 will still be a freshly device there when Windows Mobile 6.5 comes out. So we'll see, who knows what to expect from Sony Ericsson at this point.
Well for most of XDA forum readers, it doesn't realy matter. I am using WM 6.5 Beta right now, wnd when the final version comes to ANY device on the planet you can be sure aswell, that it will be ported
Hell you can have WM 6.5 on 3 years old Tytn 2...
wow awesome - rly hope they do now ! since it was planned for win 6.5 in the first place!

Yeah, I would also love an official 6.5 rom instead of a custom Rom.
I don't say the custom roms are bad, far from it :-D
But i prefer official stuff frpm the company too..
So R4A would be 6.5 update?
Anyway, nice to hear this news
I am currently on Itje's 6.5 ROM and it works great but i would also prefer an official release and support from Sony Ericsson for Windows Mobile 6.5.
its gona cost sony a fortune to upgrade to 6.5 on xperia,**** loads of licensing deals and tons of money wasting
whats going hapen is that we are going to get a very good custom 6.5,and sony will launch x2 with 6.5 or something, no way in hell they are going to give us free 6.5 upgrade, but thats what i think, lets hope for some good news
It depends...

I would have agreed with you as your theory is very valid, but don't you remember that during the X1's development Sony Ericsson there was a multiple information leak about Xperia having WM 6.5 but wasn't developed fast enough for X1's release, so my suspicion is that SE could have already purchased Windows Mobile 6.5 software for X1's back then, but no one knows as there is not enough information. I mean, after all were are definitely gonna get a ported WM 6.5 no matter what, but hey! I wouldn't mind an official build 6.5 straight from Sony Ericsson
It would be nice to have wm6.5 but i would prefer wm7. My X1 would be in trash in after 1 or 2 years anyway.

I disagree:
WinMo 6.5 on Xperia is NOT "very possible": is a REALITY
Go to the ROM development subforum and check for your self
Keep checking every day and be preapred for even more big surprises soon

I just want to clear whether information you referred to was about upcoming "cooked WM 6.5 that is ported to X1 from HTC's" or you really meant the official release from Sony Ericsson?
The 2005 PDA only device ran Windows Mobile 5 but it has been upgraded to 6.1. So that shows alotta things is possible.
does anyone know if htc will make an update for 6.5?
It will be great, i like a 6.5 ROM but no with so many changes such V24, i like a ROM that likes such Microsoft Original's OS.
It's very unlikely that they would.
If you were the head of HTC, would you rather support older phones or give people a motivation to go and buy newer models??

that is right opal is not so old... one year i think... remember what happened from WM6 to WM6.1 they made an update for the htc touch...
lets hope they also make an update from 6.1 to 6.5 for touch viva
If Htc doesn't update, is is not possible for the crackers or ROM cookers to cook a new ROM based on the official release????
