Radio fault? or Radio ROM fault? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Having strange problems with my Hermes. It has problems maintaining connection to the network, sometimes it will go for days without issue and then won't connect at all. It then takes multiple battery removal/reboots to get it to work again.
It is a Hermes 300, originally from T-Mobile, now unlocked using Vodafone. I am running Schaps_WM6Pro_Hermes_4.31_WWE_Full using radio 1.41
I do occasionally get the NO GSM message on startup but not always and sometimes it works, despite the NO GSM error. I think I solve the problem by trying a new radio rom, but the problem creeps back in after a few days.
Any ideas?

Same issue with mine - I think its hardware related not software. Tried disassembly, reassembly - sometimes works for a stretch then dies. Leave battery out sometimes brings it back for a short time. Question: does your front dPad work - the front directional keys - phone pickup/hangup? Tried reflashing a new ROM but this can get tricky because the rom update will hang if the NO GSM error is encountered upon bootup during the flash - as it can't flash a radio where it think it doesn't exist. This seems to be a bug in the update flash software - it should see if it can find a radio then flash - not try to continue to flash when it can't find one. This fix would probably prevent a bricked phone although if it can't find a GSM radio the phone is probably toast anyway.

Yeah, my dpad works just fine, only faults are with the radio. I have been trying different things that I think work for awhile but then see to not be the case like turning off 3G or HSDPA..... in the end the same fault returns.
Problem is, I don't know when it happens if it's in standby. Miss calls and get no SMS to tell me I have a message.

I started sensing problems when my bluetooth headset was on. While driving I would start hearing beeps indicating a loss of signal. Sure enough I looked on the screen and saw the ! with .... hunting for a signal. Turn the phone off and one and the NO GSM message popped up. Fortunately my housing and screen are in mint condition so I'll search out for a really beat up but working donor and swap the board. Unfortunately on eBay even the really destroyed HERMES are even pretty pricey. If it weren't for the driver problem on the Kaiser I'd spring for one of those being that the Hermes does seem to have its problems. Hate the Fuze as it looks and feels very cheap = not that durable.

Reception problems with TyTN

Hi there,
I got a Tytn since about 2 months now. I never used the image that it came with but since i tried about 3 or 4 different images and at least 5 different radio versions, I am seeing the device acting really strange. The symptoms I see are:
- device locks up while in sleep mode and sms / calls are not being anounced / logged
- devices loses reception really often, switches to gprs when it had 3g reception 1 sec ago, doesnt want to do calls on the first try(sometimes I need 4 tries)
Sometimes I can solve the problem by setting the device to flight mode and then back to nonflight mode.
Im not sure if it is a hardware problem with my device. When I got it I was barely able to get the stylo in the device or out. Since a few weeks, after some thin foil coming out of the stylus sloy, the stylus goes in fairly easy. Im not sure if that messed up something with my hardware, for example some antenna connection or sth like that.
Do you got any ideas what I could try to fix the problem? Or would sending in the TyTN be the best way to solve that problem?
Thanks for your help,
Pascal

The problems you outline have all been dealt with in various places in this forum. Use the google sticky post to search.
Some of the more practical issues - stylus, hanging/freezing are dealt with here but also at my mini hermes site:
http://michael-channon.spaces.live.com
However I might be tempted to go for an exchange given the range of issues you have and what may be damage to the radio. (I am not convinced there is damage - the dropping calls issue has a work around - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299070 that allows you to choose a set band.)
Depending on where you got the phone may determine whether you need to return it to OEM ROM before returning (if that's what you choose to do)
Mike
I guess I will just go for a return of the phone. I still got a Nokia e61 lying around here. Does anyone of you have any experience with the htc support? I boght the phone at an o2 shop in germany. I guess they will go for a sendin to the manufacturer.
Cheers
Pascal
I just returned my tytn to the shop today. Too many problems with this device. Could anyone of you tell me if that is usual problems or if the tytn runs fine if it is not being touched?
If it does I will get a tytn again, if not I guess i will go for a blackberry or a palm treo, or just stick to my old phone (nokia e61)
Any ideas?
Cheers
Pascal
mine works fine... havent experienced the sleep of death or anything of the sort.. some people seem to have it more with certain roms than other people.. but mine over all is working good...
update your ROM
Hello,
To resolve your problem , you need update the ROM to version Black Diamon, 01-04-2007, radio version 1.07.03.10.

Bad replacement niki?

I had sent a phone in for repair, which was then said to be unrepairable and so I was given a replacement niki (however the replacement was a refurbished one).
Its only been a week or so but I have had major problems with calls. Most of the time I cant make or receive calls even though the signal bar has two or three bars. The phone says its dialing but it doesnt and ends the call automatically. If I ring my phone it goes straight to voicemail! Note that I said "most of the time" because my phone calls do go through soemtimes but thats like once every 20 or so tries or if I make a phone call immediately after a soft reset or just get lucky!
The other functions of the phone work fine. I have done a hard reset thinking it was something I installed but the problem is still there. Done another 4 hard resets (each time trying something different like taking the battery out before the custom orange stuff is installed) but with no change.
I did a search and came across another thread but it wasnt really solved and blamed it on S2U2. Obviously S2U2 cant be the cause for me since the problem is there even after a hard reset. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-393077.html and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=387615)
Im thinking it could be that the radio version is old (since it is a refurbed version) and also I remember reading about poor signals some time ago which was solved by changing the radio version (and is also probably why I didnt have this problem with my original niki).
Note: I have also tried the sim in another normal phone (samsung e900) and it worked fine so this is definately a problem with the touch dual.
A little bit of info:
Im with orange in the Uk,
the ROM version is 1.31.61.10 with a ROM date 10/30/07
and the Radio version is 1.58.16.27.
(Also...I havent done a radio update because I am still under warranty but I would like to know if it could be causing the problem or if it is a hardware problem).
Thanks for reading this long post (didnt think it would turn out so long, lol), but ANY help or advice will be appreciated.
well it sounds like a bad signal, so unless you want to unlock yor phone and try the modded sedna radio (best) id just send it back and complain loudly

Dropped Hermes-Shows No GSM and Other Problems

I dropped my phone from a low distance and now on the bootup screen it shows a message saying no GSM. The ROM version is 1.34.502.1 but on the radio version tab there is no number or anything. On protocol version there is also no number or letters. Also there is nothing for the IMEI. I cannot open up the program (phone) or text anyone. I have tried a hard reset and some soft resets but those did not work. My sound quit working too.......
Also if this helps, i have WM5
OS 5.1.195(build 14955.2.3.0)
Wifi - works
Bluetooth - works
All other Programs (besides phone) - works
All i want to know is if i can fix GSM and if i can then sound and my broken LCD are very small problems.
Thanks

Before assuming something very major, let's be sure all the routine things have been tried:
1
Hard reset - you've tried that, but it's worth trying again, but first try number 2 below
2
Remove the battery from the phone for 30 minutes or so and reboot after doing number 3 below:
3
Remove the SIM card, clean the contacts. Insert and re-insert it several times. This cleans the contats on both the card and the phone.
As you say the sound is likely just a loose connector and the LCD, just a case of getting the correct make (there are at least 3 non interchangeable brands)
Mike
I'm afraid your phone still did receive hardware damage Looks like the radio chip soldering is the least reliable (on certain models?) and can be easily broken, thus so many people have the dreaded "No GSM" problem and are unable to flash a new radio.
I think it's just your SIM-Card, which has loosen due to the drop.
I dropped my Phone so many times, i stopped counting. It now looks horrible scarred but it works like the first day i bought it.

In that case, the phone would just display a "No SIM card" notification. But since ZZsk8erZZ's Hermes displays "No GSM" at boot time, I'm afraid the problem is more serious than that. At any rate, it wouldn't do any harm if ZZsk8erZZ checks how securely is his SIM card inserted into the slot.
I added a few pieces of paper to the sim to push it against contacts but that didnt work. Ill try to reflash radio and if not then... i will have to go with my razr. How i wish i could use my 8525. Thanks anyways.
You can do a few things to get it back. First you have to open the case - a task that should take a few minutes with the right tools - the instructions are posted here and everywhere. Once open - RESEAT EVERY CONNECTOR and put it back together. If it doesn't work (ie still NO GSM) the motherboard is damaged and no amount of flashing will bring it back. These things are VERY sensitive and although they were made for road warriors they weren't built for them. The boards are multilayered and the connectors aren't (except for the dpad) screwed down. The flexiribbon cable is also a very weak design and cracks over time when you slide the keyboard in and out.
If the board is damaged you can do a few things - if the case and screen/keyboards are in great shape - buy a totally cosmetically trashed unit and put in the motherboard into your phone - otherwise strip it for parts and sell them on ebay - there is a market for dpads if working, flex cables and other small bits including the rear antenna plug - even small case bits will fetch some cash. Add it up and go shopping for a decent 8525. Supplies seem to be dwindling and prices are still pretty high though for unblemished fully working units. Just ask the sellers ALOT of questions before jumping in. They may say the unit freezes sometimes or there are a few working defects in these I'd walk away.
I got stuck with a TYTN HERMES 200 where the seller said everything was fine but it would freeze sometimes. Got the phone - was pristine but had the NO GSM error sometimes then fully died in a matter of days. Fortunately snapped it up for only 45. Bought a working HERMES 100 AT&T for 40 locally which worked perfectly except the seller messed up the LCD.
NoGsm Herm200
Hi!
I do have also a broken Herm200. I have droped it from the table, and since then I have NoGsm error when booting. I have tried several rom flashing but every time it stops on 12% flashing. Even when I did it with microSD was the same.
IPL - OK
SPLASH 1 - OK
SPASH 2 - OK
EXTROM - OK
GSM - when gets here the flashing stops.
OS -
Before that I had tryed several hard resets, soft resets, different key combination, and many, many ways...but still NoGsm is present.
I am now seeking for a motherboard.
If you know anyone...
Thank you
pleas!!
hello
The message “NO GSM” started suddenly appearing on start-up and of course the phone is not functional afterwards.

Dopod838pro NO GSM problem

i have my dopod 838 pro running on Schap's WM6 Pro 4.30 ROMs. it had been all right for pass 5 month since i upgrade the original WM5 to WM6. and since then i never flash it.
Yesterday afternoon, i can still use it to receive call. but at night. i found out that the phone doesn't have any signal on GSM network. when i double check it, it asking me to key in sim card password and said "unknown sim status"
if i key in the wrong password, it will state that my password is wrong. but if i key in the correct password, it still asking me for password. and stay on the same page no matter how many times i key in the password.
i already do hard reset. but the problem still exits. these were info when i start the phone.
M 05
S 04 NO GSM
B 06 D3.62
and these were info from bootloader
HERM 100
IPL-1.04
HERM100
SPL-2.10.Olipro
i very confuse with a lot of help over internet in thread for those no GSM problem. but i can't seems find any similar problem with mine.
WIFI and bluetooth were working fine. i can still goes into the Today screen and access every other things normally.
Please help me.
Do you know what Radio was on the device before the no GSM?
If you try to update your radio more than likely it won't update and freeze at a low percentage of completion. Sorry to say the radio on the motherboard is dead or dying. Happens frequently on the Hermes and the only way to fix it is to get a new motherboard. Happened on mine - would work fine then the GSM would start dropping out and reconnecting during the day. Upon reboot it would get the NO GSM message. Turn off leave battery out then try again - sometimes would start up then it would just die. After replacement of motherboard it just works.
No amount of flashing of ROMS including or not including the radio will fix it - the chipset in the HERMES is the weak link and they eventually just go. Either the solder has developed cracks from charging (heat) or flex.
Sorry.....

i not pretty sure . but it was original radio. i didn't flash radio before.
but i had downloaded the new version radio. successfully flashed it. but still no GSM.
STIM141: i think you are quire right. i had inquiries some shop of phone repair and have describe them my problem. since my phone die without me doing anythings to it. they pretty confirm it's the mother board die. they said the only way is to repair it and replace motherboard.
The best way to fix it cheaply is to find a donor phone thats confirmed working with a guarantee on eBay. Something that beat up, maybe the screen has problems and swap it out yourself. Its pretty easy to replace and you can do it in about 10 to 15 minutes tops. Need a couple of tools but they can be found locally. Should cost no more than about 30-35 dollars if you are patient. Next would be to scrap the phone for parts - but if the motherboard is bad you probably won't get very much unless you part it out and just wait for individual buyers.

Thank you CMONEX for fixing my device....but can anyone help with my NEW problem :)

With a lot of help from CMONEX I got my device booting up and I now have a working, booting device. Previously I had been unable to boot the device or update it at all due to having a REALLY old radio running on my preproduction device which didn't let any .nbh flash.
Now I have a new problem and I'm not sure if it's a pure hardware fault or radio firmware incompatibility with my older device....
I put my sim in, boot the phone and it recognises the card and sets up mms etc fine....then I notice that my signal is really bad - like, one or two bars. In my iPhone with another contract T-Mobile SIM in I'm getting full bars.....
I test an Orange SIM in the handset and it can't find ANY signal.
So I take the phone to work (luckily in a way as my iPhone uses a tethered jailbreak and restarts on me, meaning until I get to a pc and run Blackra1n I can't boot it past the Restore Mode screen). I cannot get a signal at all indoors, but upon leaving work I head into town and BANG - full bars, HSDPA. I get on the bus, signal stays, but then as I start to move the signal keeps dropping. By the time I get home again I'm down to one...maybe two bars. Often in the house the signal will disappear completely and I will lose service.
I have tried the latest radio and a preproduction radio an both show the same issue.
Does anyone have any experience of something like this happening? If it is a hardware fault, what caused it in their device? Could my early hardware simply need something doing to it in a software level to sort things out?
As I said, I CAN get service, I CAN receive calls and texts, but my signal is appalling unless I go outside in the centre of town. It is as if getting, keeping and maintaining service is the least of its priorities!
If anyone can help here I'd be very grateful. I don't want to take the device apart if I can help it as everything is so carefully and tightly packed in there that I fear I'll never put it back together again, and I've heard a scare story or two....
Thanks in advance.
Radio problem
Hi there...my sugestion is too not even think opening your unit...you might damage your HD2.
This seams to be a soft problem...If you are able to reflush your unit using a goldcard will be a first solution and use WWE room (European).
Next step is to take your time as I do and wait for release of HSPL and there you GO man...your world is open for you for all kind of ROMS's and Radio.
Regards
What radio ROM are you running? It could cause an issue like this, or could it be something to do with the preproduction hardware not being identical to the release hardware?
try bsb tweaks. it has a radio de-emphasize option. might help

Thanks i'll give that a try.....what does it do exactly???
Further update. I turned radio de-empahsise on and it seemingly made little difference. However when fiddling with advanced connection settings suddenly my signal shot up to 5 bars with 3g....it then quickly ebbed away to a complete lack of service! Very disappointed.
More and more I'm starting to think this might not be a hardware issue as such but a problem with my proprietary radio hardware and the radio software for shipping HD2s. Is there any way to test what's going on with the radio to see what's going wrong?
I've tested four different ROMs, two of which had different radios. I've also tested all ROMs with a test radio, and all have the same disappointing result. The only difference I found was that one of the ROMs made my device recognise only 340mb of RAM as existing....
All further help or experience in this issue will be much appreciated.
the reception on the stock hd2 isn't amazing but its not as bad as yours sounds. although mine can jump from a couple of bars to none instantly with a movement of about 10 cm. in the house
it could even be down to the previous owner dropping the one you bought..
may have dislodged something
the radio 206 gives best results for me so far, but I hope htc can come up with a better radio, although nothing they can do will help compensate for vodafones crap coverage locally.
curious does wifi show the same symptoms?
Wifi/Bluetooth etc work fine. I don't think anyone has the the same problem as me: it's definitely not my network as I'm sat with an iPhone 3gS and the HTC HD2 both with T-Mobile Flext 40 contract SIMs installed. The HD2 has no signal and a big fat exclamation mark; the iPhone 3gS has full bars and the 3G logo lit up nicely.
