Hi, I'm pretty new here and I was wondering if I could get some help.
I just got my HTC TyTN (Hermes) in the mail and it's awesome. The only problem I got, which is a big one, is that I can't connect it to my PC with ActiveSync. I've tried different versions of ActiveSync, 4.2 and 4.5. I've reinstalled it and rebooted several times, but no go.
When I connect my phone to the USB cable (tried 3 different USB ports btw) it takes a while and starts charging. But after about 20 secs, i get a message saying "USB Device not recognized".
The first time I installed it it worked fine, kinda... It got to the part where it was checking the settings on the phone or something. Then ActiveSync stopped working/froze, and I searched some on the net for that problem and found that my firewall might be the problem.
So I added all those programs to the allow list, and after that didn't work, I completely disabled my firewall. That didn't work either.
But as I said, now windows won't even detect it when I connect it.
So I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to get it to work? I'd be very grateful for any help you can give me.
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried ticking the 'Enable Advanced Network Functionality" on Hermes while connected ? Settngs > USB to PC
It have always worked for me when Hermes was not recognized.
Also, make sure "Allow USB connection" is ticked on the ActiveSync main menu.
Yes, I've tried that. Both ticked and unticked, it makes no difference.
"Allow USB connection" is also ticked.
Thanks for the reply.
If it is ticked, then un-tick it while device is connected.
I had the same problems when I first connected the device.
Try this: Full deinstallation of ActiveSync, restart PC, (do not connect Hermes yet) install ActiveSync, restart Hermes and connect it only then.
Then ply with USB to PC - tick it (wait) then untick it...
Hey man, thanks for the help.
That tip with ticking/unticking while it connects somehow worked. It doesn't work all the time, but after some ticking and unticking it works.
I just can't close that Usb to PC window or it will disconnect from ActiveSync. Oh well, at least it works. A bit annoying but usefull workaround.
Thanks again, i owe you one
Hi,
My hdd gave up in my laptop other day bought another 1 installed vista
now im having connection problems both with bluetooth and via usb with my
t-mobile ameo
does any 1 know if there is a update some where to get them working again
ive done a windows update and installed windows mobile device centre
thanks
Im running Vista business edition and had no problems at all - even updated my rom!
What do you get when you plus the Ameo in? Does it show up in the Device centre?
sync centre has just got the usual offline folder
windows mobile device centre 6.1 has the mobile device settings and the not
connected bit at the bottom
its so weired it all synced b4 theres nothing different installed setup etc...
on the device it says "to synchronize this device, you must install activesync 4.5 or newer on your desktop computer"
thanks
How Wierd.... mine lliterally just fired up autoomatically.
In your PPC, go to SETTING -> CONNECTIONS -> USB TO PC. Untick the "ENABLE ADVANCED NETWORK FUNCTIONALITY". Remove the connection by unplugging your USB cable and the plugging it again. No guarantee this will work, but you may try.
IT Works
i tried the unticking the advance option still didnt work...
i thought about the user account control in vista this came as my mobile
data card for my laptop wasnt installed correctly and after checking out the
install log and it saying access control n a load of other stuff saying
permission denied etc.... i thought id turn vistas user account control off this
fixed my data card problem ......i then pluged my t-mobile ameo in and hey
presto it picked it up as a black HTC Advantage due to my mobile 6 rom
upgrade
I believe Active Sync won't work on Visat, you need Mobile Device Center, available here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ea-9df9-4920-af33-3a0e2e4e7beb&displaylang=en
Makes sense as I have crappy user control switched off as it annoyed me greatly!
Vista Utlimate Connects but refuses access.
This solution worked instantly for us.

We had downloaded the upgrade device driver and the Windoze Vista replacement for ActiveSync... as Vista dictates on first connection.
We got the sound effect acknowledging USB connection, but Windoze Mobile Device Centre obstinately ignored the connection.
We tried the tricks suggested by the mages and sages, like adding ports etc. to the firewall, and deleting the driver in the Vista Device Manager... forcing it to re-install. None of it worked for the Ameos.
We removed the Mobile Device Centre and the upgraded driver, resolving to connect to the Ameos only via our XP Tablet instead.
It seemed that the USB connection was being made, but something else was blocking it.
Then this possible solution (reproduced here) caught our eye.
It was the work of a moment to follow the path and remove the check in that item.
Imagine our surprise and delight when we connected to Windoze Vista Ultimate again... and remember that there is no upgraded driver or Mobile Device Centre installed now... and we got the "what shall I do with this device" dialogue box. We checked the item to open the device in a folder each time and... it did... and does... just that.
We do not need synchronisation for our use of the Ameos since all of the significant email and document traffic occurs on the laptops and Tablet, but we can appreciate why someone would want that Mobile Device Centre to be re-installed. We won't be doing that anytime soon though.
Congratulations to you cayotte, and this forum as a whole.
BTW, I read about the problems folks have with the Microdrive. We have two Ameos. One works great with the Microdrive, the other one does not, and we have to leave it for data files only.
The older unit is the one which works well.
We already had the User Account Control turned off so I cannot say if that had any effect.

Hi,
after upgrading my unbranded HTC Tytn to more recent WM5 version through official ROM upgrade from HTC (italian version QTEK_405), the activesync connection only works if I connect via Bluetooth or IR.
The USB connection doesn't seem to work anymore.
Activesync seems to try to connect, but after a while I get the "cannot establish a connection..." message.
Checking the Network Connections on the PC, it looks like there is in/out traffic packets on the device, but nothing else happens.
Also tried on another PC and same behaviour.
Activesync version is 4.5 build 5096.
Any idea also how to test that USB connector is working properly, to narrow down the problems ?
Thanks in advance
Did you try disabling the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" checkbox in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC?
Also if your are running WinXP or Vista... with your phone connected with the USB cable. Check in the Device Manger, for any "unknown devices". Select them and remove.
Now disconnect your phone from your computer. Then do a "Soft" reset on your phone. Now reconnect through the USB and does it recognize it as a ppc device?? now try to ActiveSync again!!

Yes, no success.
I can see in the Device manager that the network card is replaced by a USB device, but nothing happens on Activesync side.

Tried that.No unknown devices.
I've uninstalled the newtork card corresponding to the Tytn, disconnected and soft reset the device.
It seems to reinstall it properly, but still same behaviour.
One thing that makes me wonder is why the device shows as Windows Mobile-based device #3.
Anything I can do to celanup this ? It looks like it's got some old device hanging.
What about ActiveSync on the ppc? Do you have the "Synchronize all PC's using this connection" checkbox checked? Does it point to "USB" below the checkbox? What do you have in that MENU-CONNECTIONS... screen on the PPC?
Damn it Ive been having one problem after another with my 8525 just when I think things are going good there is another set back.
My phone wont sync to my computer anymore. I have Schaps 4.20 installed and I installed the cube earlier today just to see what it was like because I was going to upgrade to shaps 4.3. Now its time to upgrade and when I connect my phone to my pc i get a message that says "usb device not recognized"
What the heck is going on?
I uninstalled the cube from my ppc did 2 soft resets, restarted my computer and it still wont recognize my pcc
Im getting a message that says "one of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it"
It goes on to say "Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, replace the device."
None of this sounds good. Im stressing out!
After two hard resets I finally got it to accept Shaps 4.3 rom. It still wouldnt do it after the 1st and 2nd hard reset but for some reason, the last time I connected it via usb, it worked.
THANK GOD! I dont know what happened and why it wouldnt connect but Im happy I fixed.
Activesync 4.5 Stuck saying "Synchronizing"
The post above saying:-
Did you try disabling the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" checkbox in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC?
was the solution to a major headache I was having with Activesync 4.5 on a new HTC TYTN II connecting via USB. It would sit stuck with the sync indicator turning / swirling and a message saying synchronizing, but would not be doing any synchronisation!
I disabled the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" in START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-USBtoPC it it immediately began synchronising. Thought I would enable it again and it went back to just hanging there, definately needed to be disabled to rectify the problem.
Thanks.

I have to disable that on both my wizard and my trinity when syncing with either my XP computer with active sync 4.5 or my Vista computer which comes with WM Device Centre. The problem is since putting an otherwise rather excellent 6.1 rom on the trinity, nothing happens at all with that option disabled. With it enabled it connects but has the problem described above. On my wizard a message pops up when it establishes a connection, nothing happens on the trinity though. It was fine before with the original ROM. I am using [WWE][20-10-08]NiAx Trinity 6.1.70 BlueAngel - OS & SYS 20748 [ONLINE] any thoughts on what could be going wrong here?
so i thought i'd give vista's "windows mobile device center" a try on my vista laptop, and wasn't surprised to find that i couldn't get it to recognize my phone. i was surprised to find that the xp computer that i've been using with activesync for a long time suddenly stopped recognizing my phone as well.
up to now i've hard reset phone (dcd 3.04, 3.37 radio) and reinstalled activesync 4.5. no dice. please if anyone can help me troubleshoot this thing i'd be way grateful. why has my phone stopped communicating with my computers?
For WM 6 devices, on Vista you must upgrade to Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1.
i downloaded and used 6.1 on my vista machine, but it didn't work. any other ideas? i think there may be something that changed on the phone, because now, activesync won't work either...
...bytheway, the phone will charge when plugged into either, but that's about it.

Just for ****s and giggles, have you tried the following:
1. Using a different usb port
2. Blowing the dust out of the port on the phone
3. Using the Y adapter that came with the phone in between the sync cable and the phone
First, plug into the USB, wait for the Windows new device chime, see if anything occurs in the WM Activesync.. If no Activesync connection is made (after the 'connecting' has stopped) then unplug and plug in back in another USB port. Do that at least 4 times (cycling between ports...even the same may eventually work) to see if you have a success.
Restart your PC, Soft-rest your phone and try again.
If still nothing, then don't bother plugging your phone in and then Run As An Administrator the attached batch file and then under View 'Show Hidden Devices.' You'll now see all devices that have ever been installed and retained for your OS, with the faded devices as those not currently attached/active.
Rather than the batch file you can open up a Command Promp Window with Administrator access (Start\Programs\Accessories\Right Click on Command Prompt and Run As An Administrator)
(I usually keep that batch file accessible in the root of my OS partition, just to keep it easy to clean out legacy device drivers that can cause problems.[/i])
Enter:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
Uninstall
Network adapters\Microsoft Windows Remote Adapter
Portable Devices\PocketPC
Then under Programs & Settings uninstall the Windows Mobile Device Center upgrade, and then reboot your PC. Reinstal that Device Center 6.1 update and then again connect your phone with the USB. (for the XP machine you can do all of the and unistall/reboot/reinstall the ActiveSync 4.5.
(note to self or another.....these steps to be added to the Wiki for ActiveSyn issues)
well, i'm thinking that the "****s and giggles" have it. i blew into the port, plugged her in, and it connected to my xp machine, just like days of old. after about 3 minutes though, the connection dropped, and i've not been able to get it going again since. i think this rules out any software/settings problem, and looks like it's a hardware issue. i'll try cleaning it one more time a little later, and if no go, i'll have to figure a way to re-flash the stock rom (i only have a 6gb card...) and send the beast back. thanx for the input, guys (specially keystone, dang man that was one badass post with some instructions that will help someone, i'm sure.)
Do you have the Y adapter that came with the phone? The one with the audio jack and the 5 pin mini usb on one end and the 11 pin mini usb on the other? The reason I ask is because for some reason HTC decided to put an 11 pin mini usb connector on our phones, yet supply us with a data cable that's standard 5 pin mini usb. If you have it, just humor me and try it and see if it keeps the connection.
Oh and P.S....the "****s and giggles" wasn't just a shot in the dark. I've solved many activesync problems for people before using all 3.
I actually hadn't used the cord without the Y-adapter untill today. both ways yeild the same result.
Another Activesync problem
I've been on vacation the last week and while away i had to do a clear storage..anyway, my phone was fine but when i connect thru activesync i get an error code : 85010014 and my contacts list doesnt get updated...:S can anyone out there give me some advice or do i hafto start from scratch?
Also is there a way to find my contacts on my comp?

Well the hoop jumping is fun and all but I think if you uncheck the "Enabe advanced network functionality" in Start > Settings > Connection > USB to PC it may help.
Damn! That was simple. I unchecked the "Enabe advanced network functionality" box and I'm up and running! I'll save the hoops for later. Thanks!

Hi, thanks that work for me fine too
my mogul has been giving me crap with vista and xp for weeks. Nothing can solve it. I've re-flashed, downgraded, used different ports, different cables, modified the USB to PC settings.
Add this to the list of things that randomly seem to be a problem for this phone.
I had a similar situation, none of the software based suggestions fixed it. Wiggling the cord around would sometimes connect, but soon thereafter, my phone stopped charging. The USB port was the culprit, so be careful.
I'm sure everyone who was having troubles figured out solutions, just thought I'd add in my dealings with this.
I just had the phone activated today (yes I bought used) and brought it to work to sync with my work outlook, well the usb cord would charge the phone but give me nothing but errors in the way of actual data connection. I was a little bummed this afternoon thinking I bought a partially broken phone. But WHILE HAVING THE PHONE CONNECTED ( I bold because I had done this multiple times while not connected and had no results) I opened the Comm Manager and clicked on the sync button at the bottom, suddenly my computer could recognize my device and I was sync'ing like a mad man.
Very possibly a stupid thing I should have done from the start, but I don't know any better since I'm brand new to all of this. I only post in hopes of helping another bummed out soul as was myself
I an running a HTC TyTN-II 4550 phone (WinMo 6.1) on a desktop PC (WinXP).
I couldn't get Activesync 4.5 to work either, but there were obvious reasons--my version of Office 2000 isn't supported (2003 is the earliest, I think) and IE and Outlook are not set as my default mail clients (-and that's how I like it-).
I didn't really need Activesync but I did want to be able to get files on and off the phone from my desktop PC through the USB cable. When I'd connect the phone, Activesync would automatically start up and spin the little logo for a while and then say "connection couldn't be made" and then I couldn't do anything--even move files on and off the phone.
What I found works is this:
1) open the Task Manager, and kill the wcescomm.exe process.
2) navigate to the folder that Activesync is installed in, and run the file named WCESMgr.exe.
3) that will popup a window, asking if you want to sync, or cancel. Press [cancel]
4) the normal Activesync window will come up, and the choices for "Sync" and "Schedule" will be greyed out, but the "Explore" button should work.
Sometimes I can disconnect and reconnect the phone without going through steps #1-#4, but not always.
With the "Explore" window you can drag files on and off the device.
I tried dragging small Word and Excel docs on and off; both converted properly when dragged onto the phone, but only the Word file would convert again when dragged off.
The phone will access the internet through the USB when hooked up this way, also.
Hey guys,
i've got a very big problem.
I dont know why but every time i connect my Blackstone to the Computer it always open the "Internet Sharing" thing. Ive changed it over "Settings" back to Sync (and in settings/connections/USB to PC, check "Ask me first about USB connection type when I connect the device to the PC" also), but no change.
Then i canged in the registry the following key "HKLM\Software\HTC\USBToPCPopUP\" DWORD: OnlyTwoChoice=1
now the HTC Popup with the option "Sync" and "HDD" show up, but when i choose Sync it doesent connect and sync.
I want my three Options back and want the option that i can choose out of "Sync" "HDD" and "Internet Sharing"
Thank you
greetz
I started getting this problem when I used the Internet Sharing option for the first time. From then on it would automatically try IS instead of Activesysnc, no matter what I did.
I solved it by unticking the Enable faster data syncronization box in USB to PC tab, but this results in a clunky pile of tabs that come up when connecting to the PC.
Unticking the "Enable faster data syncronization" box in USB to PC tab, doesent solve the problem
Hello
I got the same problem where I did not get the "3 choices" screen while connecting to usb, and IS by default...

Hope it will the same for you..

I guess you mean the registry on the device itself?
I been looking for that, but it looks i don't have this //HKLM\Software\HTC\USBToPCPopUP\...
in fact, i'm facing the exact same problem as described in this htcforum.com post:
"http://www.htcforums.com/post5958.html#p5958" (yes, i posted there too )
i'm pretty sure the problem is NOT pc-related, the data-connection fails at every possible system i tested it with (ranging from xp to vista to ubuntu to osX), at least the usb-diskmode worked before on all these systems before... not anymore...
the answer of HTC support wasn't of much help either:

i suspect them of not even reading about my problem, and just firing some default answer back... not really helpfull.
so i keep looking around for possible solutions for now.
I'm seriously thinking to make use of the warranty, but hate to lose the device for a long periode... anybody has experience with that?
another PCtoUSB problem, i get all 3 options, HDD and Internet Work perfectly, ActiveSync however doesn't. Vista recognizes it as a USB Pocket PC, but Vista Sync Center and WMDC do not, nothing. On HTC i get the charging icon, but not the Sync icon. Also in the ActiveSync --> Connections menu i have "Sync all PCs using this connection:" ticked, however the drop down menu is empty, nothing to select.
in the ActiveSync start screen there's just the fake Microsoft Exchange account, nothing else
Everything was working fine till few days ago :/

I tried this but still get ICS opening when I connect my device up. It is driving me mad now trying to sort this - I may even resort to a hard reset before the end of the weekend.
The only way I can get sync to work is to disable the faster data sync option.
hmm, every system i test with gives the same result:
the htc device does charge, but the usb data-connection never works...
could it be a faulty connector?
