what should i do - Touch HD General

iv just got my brand new touch hd on orange, iv just started playing with it and am getting used to it slowly, iv had an o2 xda11i and an xda exec previously and both of them i flashed with roms from here, what do people recommend??

So far, I haven't flashed my Touch HD which is surprising as I was used to flashing my previous devices. Maybe the reason I haven't is I purchased an "unbranded" one from mobilephonedirect. If you have Orange branded one I'm assuming it has all manner of naff s/ware on it - my advice would be to flash either an unbranded stock rom, or a cooked rom

If you don't use the Orange bloatware, your phone would be way faster and be able to do a lot more if you loaded a newer rom... just my two cents!

what is a good rom to flash with?? its been a while since iv done this! iv just sat and gone thru the wiki.

Personally, I've just flashed it with the latest WWE stock ROM... got rid of my Orange bloatware and enjoying the experience "as is".
Im very happy with the way it is now, using a clean stock ROM and the Advanced Tools software.
My first step would be to flash it with the latest, clean stock ROM. This gives you the most up-to-date ROM from HTC without the bloat that Orange dumped on it. From there, I'd read up on some of the other ROMs such as Dutty's and DavieDuck's.... you might find the Manilla V3 or WM6.5 ROMS to be something you wish to experiment with also.
Theres plenty of info around here and plenty of help so when in doubt, search! When still stuck, post

Ok well i have just successfully upgraded to dutty's v2.9 and must say im quite happy, the new (dare i say it) i phone stlye start menu seems better. can i ask what other programs do people use, i will be installing tcpmt or whatever it was i used to use (core media player) and was thinking about wisbar, iv seen a thread on here about alternatives to the touch flo3d (point UI).
any recommendations would be very useful as iv been away from windows mobile for quite a while.
also i remember there being a ftp directory or something full of cab files, or maybe a list of cab files for my old xda, is there something like this for the touch hd??
also spb mobile shell 3.0 would that be used instead of touchflo3d??
sorry being a pain now!! lol iv just realised i got some cab files with the dutty 2.9 download and i have completely forgotten what im supposed to do with .cab file to install them, any help or a point in the right direction, i tried searching cab files but was unsuccessful.
also im slowly understanding what manila is but now im on dutty extreme 2.9 am i running new or old manila?? new i presume.

XDA Ignito / HTC Touch - Need advice (help) plz :)

hi guys,
I have just joined the forum and this is my first post..
I have bought the XDA Ignito or the HTC Touch Diamond.. and have been exploring the phone. Was wondering if I can get some help here, i know there are lots of posts there but some things are complicating to me!
Just to inform that I am a newbie with all this stuff.
I want to customise few things:
I'm on orange and therefore I dont want the O2 screen at the start, and although I like the blue and white theme (of the TouchFlo3D), I would like to see the original version (black) also..
In the Internet option, When I click on Launch Browser, nothing happens and I have to manually open Internet Explorer from the Start menu!
I thought it is possible to browse the web in landscape by tilting the phone, but when I tilt the device nothing happens. Is it because im using Internet Explorer?
What do I need to do to purely customise my new toy lol
Also I would like to know of any tweaks that I may be able to do to maybe make the phone more faster?
One more question, I would like to know how long on average does the battery last? Mine lasts just about a day!
Thank you lot in advance! Appreciate all the help I can get!
Cheers
dakz
The simple answer is to flash a new rom. This will make your phone a standard diamond and remove the O2 branding
Internet explorer does not work in landscape. Most diamond's have Opera installed as the default browser which does switch to landscape
The new Rom should make your phone faster - the custom roms are usually tweaked for speed
If it's new, you are probably playing with your new toy a lot, so 1 day battery is about right
You could also try diamond tweak or advanced config from this forum. Both allow you to tweak in a user friendly way
There are sticky threads about these at the start of this very diamond forum
hey hays
firstly thanks for the reply..
So where do I or can I download the new rom and is it easy to 'flash' it? But before that i would want to know how to backup the current one just incase therex problems later!
Regarding the browser, i will try find the opera browser n download and make it the default, hoping that will work!
Right once i get those things done i will search the tweaks..
cheers so far
dakz
I downloaded Opera, including the new beta version from their website and yet it does not tilt to landscape when i turn the phone
Can someone who is able to browse the web in landscape plz tell me which version of Opera you are using?
thanks
opera browser landscape version??
no one willing to put an input??? Need to know the opera version!
I suggest you to backup files using spb backup and then flash the rom you like. It's easy, there is a fine tutorial. Probably you will have opera with it.
cheers
thanks for that
spent most of today just researching it around the forums, catching up on all the terminology that had been confusing me lol
I will download n flash a new ROM soon.. but I would like to backup my current one, which is 1.93.206.3 WWE and Radio version 1.00.25.05.
Anyone know where I can download these original ones?
thanks once again.
dakz
I know nothing about backuping whole rom, but I suggest you not to worry about that, there are few O2 roms here I think, radio also is no problem
yeh i might forget about backing up the whole ROM and instead im just going to find 1.93.206.3 WWE ROM sumwhere lol and then i can start messing about!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=430636
dont work!
thanks idrisito, i've checked that thread earlier today..
the link they provide in there dont exist any more
does it not! ill sort it out when i get home!
found it, i think!
well i did find "O2 XDA Ignito ROM 1.93.206.3 WWE November_2008.rar" from http://www.mediafire.com/?wz2amnzyk1w located in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=430636&page=5.
Now im slightly confused, will this do as my backup or should I wait until you sort out the link u have given me earlier?
that link i posted (i.e. the first one on the XDA ignito thread) does work ! i just downloaded from it !
thats the latest one it should say december 7th!
the other one i upped whic youv got does not display the splash screen correctly
once you'v downloaded the december 7th one that should allow you to return to the stock ROM, after flashing other ROMs, if you want to ever return for warranty purposes!
wicked! thanx
Hey idrisito thanks bro!!
dont know what happened!! its strange lol it was not working before! honest!
well im downloading it right now.
I also managed to flash Hard-SPL-Diamond-OliNex 1.40 and updated my Radio to v1.03.25.18 from 1.00.25.05. How would i find out which radio is better lol are there any things i should look for?
Two days of hard reading on this forum ahh lol but glad its done successfully without any problems.. next stage is to find a good ROM and flash that! Might start with the HTC's original one and compare it to the O2's blue theme.
thanks n keep up the good work
update: I just tried to flash Diamond_WWE_1.93.707.157 ROM but for some reason was unsucessful! It ends up with the following message after 1%:
error [244] INVALID MODEL ID
What am i doing wrong?
dakz
you need to carrier unlock your phone (CID unlock) if you want to flash any ROM!
have you installed unsigned hard SPL? (i suggest unsigned)
it probably didnt work cos the rom your installing is for a different region!
go for one of UDKs or some of the othe widely used ROMs in the forum!
there is a way round flashing the rom you currently have but it involves deconstrucing>> changing the model ID>>reconstructing the ROM and then flashing!
its easy enough once you know how!
the best radio in my opinion is the one suggested in UDK R3 ROM thread

Flashing ROM and current programs

Hi all,
I have an MDA Vario II from T-Mobile UK currently running stock ROM (ie WM5) from ancient times. Am thinking of moving to other ROMs to give it a new look and feel, but am not sure about one aspect- Will I lose the stock applications (eg Word, Excel...) when I install, say, a dopod ROM?
Many thanks.
TX129447
Possibly, but you can find them on this site in cab installable form so its just a matter of re-installing them if they aren't there. Read a little bit about the rom, the chefs give a good idea of whats included and whats not.
Cheers...

Noob needs help please

New Questions here, old one at the bottom.
hi and thanks to everyone for your answers... you helped me a lot.
but:
I tried various 6.5 and 6.5.3 roms and found a lot of bugs in all of them... and that's not really my style. I want to go back to stock firmware 6.1 and there are not many options (or maybe i wasn't able to find them). Where can i find the Stock Firmware section or something like that, if they are unbranded even better, and if you can direct me to the latest one even better... i have installed the one from Orange in spanish meanwhile, i think it's Ver 1.57.75.3 found here. forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566929 but if there are better unbranded ones i'll be very happy to install them... (how about this one: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521354).
Thanks a lot again in advance...
old Question:
Hi, i bought yesterday my new Opal and i have no idea how to update the rom to windows 6.5... I´m a bit of a perfectionist so i wanna get things right from the beginning, and i used to mod motorola phones so i understand some of the technical stuff, but htc is completely new to me.
So far, this is what i have understood:
to update:
1.- install hard_spl
2.- install custom ruu
3.- install new rom.
But i have a lot of questions on what is each one of those things and the advantages they give.
What does Hard_SPL do?
What is the Custom RUU for? (what is the RUU?)
What is the most stable and least customized rom with winmo 6.5? which rom is the most used by this forum?
What is titanium?
and last: how is the Opal unlocked? (if posible)
Mi goal is to update to winmo 6.5 but keep my phone looking as stock as possible and as stable as possible...
all the help i can get will be very appreciated...

Congrats for your Htc touch viva!
Ok now initially Htc touch viva has its official spl which would not allow your device to upgrade to custom roms. You can only upgrade to official roms. So Spl is a kind of lock To unlock that only we use Hard SPL After installing HSPL you can upgrade to custom roms.
And you understood slightly wrong because Ruu = Rom update utility its just a app which is used to upgrade your rom in your device. So u dont install that. After HSPL directly rom
And about the roms i cant say coz every one has different flavours try them all At last titanium is a new interface made by microsoft and introduced in wm 6.5 and above.
A Word of Caution....
I want to add one thing...(IMPORTANT!!!)

Don't think that a particular WM 6.5.x ROM will work for your device just because it worked like a charm on somebody's device. Believe it or not, though it may be the same model ex: HTC Touch Viva T2223, there are variations depending on the country.

I want to add one thing to what freelancer said:
Imo it is not ALWAYS the best to stick with the stock version. I had branded ROM shipped with my phone, hardSPLed it and installed custom translated unbranded ROM.
Does the same thing as branded ROM did but way faster. And some features like the HTC task manager didn't work with branded rom at all. Now everything works just fine.
I agree that stock ROMs are the best/fastest, but just not if you have a branded one. It slows down your device.
Just my opinion

Lol, who said that stock is rom is best as far as about opal you should go ahead with custom roms i have seen that custom rom gives more free ram then stock. Plus task manager in stock rom that can be done in custom also the thing is the more the rom is lite the more efficiently your device will work do you know the stock rom .nbh file size is more than 100 mb whereas a normal custom rom is around 90 mb if there are many app and you can create less than 50 mb stock rom also. Wm 6.5 is perfect for opal inface wm 6.5.x also.

Custom Roms RULE!!!!!
i don't mean to disagree with you guys (you know better) but i didn't mean to say that WM6.1 v1-vx is bad but as far as WM6.5 is concerned....they have disadvantages like they are buggy and also consumes battery quite fast.
Appearance wise...WM6.5 is way ahead...but performance wise....I'll stick with WM6.1 anytime.
currently i am using WM6.1 v14 by PDAVIET it is nearly perfect!!!!
regarding differences in hardware...i was meaning the CARRIER...like Verizon, DoPoD, T-Mobile (MDA Basic), iDea (India) and so on...sorry...
regarding stockspl...mine was SPL 1.35.0000...i couldn't find any download link for that..
hey brothers i think tht opal also should have a completely cleam winmo 6.5.3 rom plxxxxxx i love it on mi friends wizard which has less ram....i know ya guys can do it...and also brother winmo is all about customising and making changes to interface wen ya want... its not only themes..it has completely different uis tht can be swithched ezily... so ya gotta try these.....i guess after trying diferent lock screens games today screens thn aftr tht rty theroms

Differences between O2 and Unbranded ROM's

Hi guys,
I've been using the forum for a year or so now and it's great!
I'm now the proud owner of an HD2 from O2 UK and I've already updated the ROM to version 1.72.206.3, which I believe is the latest, but what are the differences between this O2 ROM and the unbranded ROM?
I've done a search and can't seem to find anything to answer this question.
Hope somebody can help.
thanks
The unbranded ROM?
Which ROM? Do you mean the original o2 1.43 ROM? Not much difference that you would recognise. The volume slider in WMP renders correctly in 1.72 whereas in 1.43 it looked like a poo stain in a pair of underpants. Apart from that forget it. I just includes all of the camera, SMS and other hotfixes which had been released between the two versions.
Do you mean cooked ROMs you can download from XDA? The world of difference. Select a ROM with the features you want from the ROM section and flash it as per the instructions given.
Maybe over the next year you will read some of the posts. Maybe even learn a thing or two
if you do in fact mean cooked roms. then alot.
for me (an energy user) the phone no longer crashes every day. i can install all the apps i want and not hit the memory usage on the phone. The phone runs alot faster, smoother has better apps pre-installed and i just like it more?
After having read almost all threads from the beginning it seems that ALL branded HD2s are buggy to excess ..............
I use an unbranded one, and while once in a while I had some probs with 1.43 since 1.48 it runs as smooth as liquid nitrogene.
I have also installed SKTools and Pocket Mechanic, LeoCPUSpeed V.3.0, CHT 1.6 (the ultimate stable version till now), Chainfire´s 3D-driver and before any mod or installed app I do a backup. In case a new app causes probs I just revert to sit as before.
No single hardreset necessary till now since I unpacked it.
Honestly: I was heavily tried to flash a cooked ROM once, but I refrain from THAT as soon as I read in the specific threads about the many problems some of the users then have with lock-ups, freezes, bricking. And branded HD2s ARE cooked ROMS !
CHT, Franwella, Jaguaralani, Smaberg, MooNah and the many others (sorry for not remembering ALL names, but ALL are geniousses) offer such nice little mods that there is no need FOR ME to experiment with cooked ROMS.
Also on Freewarepocketpc - when is new app is issued - as soon as I read "does not work on HD2" I abstain from installing till a stable version is issued.
difference between o2 rom and unbranded rom
hi
in o2 rom wifi router is missing
Hi all,
Thanks for all the input so far.
Previous to having the HD2 I had an X1 which I flashed with various cooked ROM's successfully and it worked quite well.
Really, I just need to know what is missing on the O2 1.72 ROM that is on the equivalent stock ROM which I assume is 1.48 and would I benefit from flashing a stock ROM to the device.
Would it let me do this with no problems and would it affect the warranty, if it needed reapair, if I did flash it with a stock ROM or would I have to go back to the O2 ROM?

Reinstallation question

Hi!
I have the strangest question
My phone is reaaallly slow, so I figured I'd do a hard reset and reinstall everything.
My question is, what should I do
Basically I just want the latest version of windows mobile and HD2 updates. To get it really up to date
So can you give me any recommendations on what exactly I should update?
Thanks
The easiest way is probably to flash a custom rom..... one of the newer ones.
Should contain all the freshest updatey goodness and give the speed your looking for.......
Best thing to do is work out which apps you liked and what worked and do a hard reset back to factory spec and only install the apps you like...
After getting the phone most of us install every app that comes along, settling for a few that are essential... Hard resetting and fresh installs will help greatly...
Only go a custom rom if you really know what you are doing and only if you are dedicated to try several to find one that suits you...

I know I used to do so with my old telephone (TYTN II), but recently I spoke with a friend of mine (he has a HD2 too). He's really into computers etc, and he has the latest roms and everything. He told me that his phone is A LOT faster now.
The only thing is: I have no idea where to start. Just download the latest windows mobile? or should I download the latest HTC HD2 rom? Or both? In what order? Any other updates?

Before i went down the custom rom route i did modify a stock 1.66 rom so i can make a comparison here between as shipped stock, modded stock and custom 6.5.5. I can tell you that 6.5.5 is miles better, faster and if you get a custom rom with a newer version of sense that's even better.
Flashing custom roms has been covered so many times many people are bored of replying but i'll see what i can do in one post.
First you need a copy of HSPL3. Search for it, it will turn up. Don't ask how to install it. All you need to do is run the exe in the file you download.
Then you have a choice. You can either install and updated radio rom (will possibly improve signal and battery life but to find the best one for you and your area may take a couple of flashes and some testing) or just skip straight to the main event. I recommend that all new rom flashers use Energy 23569 standard sense 2.5 because it's fast, pretty lightweight and very close to a HTC stock rom in looks which makes it pretty easy to use. To install follow the instructions in the first couple of posts of the energy rom thread.
I also recommend that you have a look at leocpuspeed V4 and chainfire's 3D driver patch v2 (search for those). Once configured they will greatly improve the performance of the device running any rom you install and it's well worth it.
if you dont wanna go custom rom, i guess you could check see if you have all the latest updates from the HTC site, take it from there, only install apps to the device that need to be on the device such as tweaking apps and install everything else on the sd card, and get your self clean ram or bsb ram sweeper, will reclaim the ram for you from the programs you thought you may have closed but didnt really close.
