Just wanted to share my experience on a warranty repair with unlocked bootloader. Incase any of you are about to go through this.
I've had to recently send in my phone on a warranty repair for a dead pixel and also getting static interference on my phone speaker when the ringtone is sounding on a incoming call.
Upon calling them they offered a exchange but after I told them I had an unlocked bootloader they said they can only do a repair job on it.
So I ship my phone and 2 days later I get a repair quote for $196.00. I call them to find out specifics and they said I need a new motherboard. My phones been in it's sleeve since I first got it a few weeks ago and absolutely has never been dropped. Which means a failing motherboard came with my phone from the beginning. Now they are telling me that an unlocked bootloader voids my warranty. I have pointed out to them that I know of plenty of people with unlocked bootloaders & clear hardware malfunctions who were able to get a warranty repair or even a warranty exchange!
Now my ticket is being escalated and I will hear back from the higher ups in 48-72 business hours.
Any helpful advice guys?

All you can do is wait... I'd bet that the escalation people will approve the repair under warranty. If not, then everyone needs to be on notice and my prediction has come true.

By "static interference on my phone speaker", do you mean you hear static when the speaker is ringing? Does the speaker-phone play music without static noise?

I think they would've sent a new one but I had to put a $529 on a credit card to do so (which I would've done). But I was afraid that they would've kept the $529 if they found out that my original phone bootloader was unlocked. So I figured I'd tell them for the sake of good karma...I'm really not trying to hustle HTC here.
Yes every couple of calls when my phone rings, the ringtone would be accompanied by a lot of static. I've tried playing back music and trying to recreate the problem but I couldn't get any static out of it on my own. Just randomly happens on it's own during incoming calls. Didn't matter what ringtone I was using or what radio I was on.

The $529 deposit is so you have an incentive to send back your old phone and not keep both. Once they receive it, the charge is undone.

Yea I know its just a temporary hold but I thought they inspect your old phone upon arrival. Guy on phone told me they can't do anything with unlocked bootloader phones on exchanges which is why it was out of the question. I was just afraid that my old phone would get there and they realized it was unlocked...would've been a more complicated situation then since they are holding my $529.
Where you from? need put $529 for deposit? Being charge $196.00 a bit high, so poor you.
Then service center in Singapore is better, no need any deposit, mine one also root and dead completely and they fix for me FOC.
I'm in Miami, Florida. Had to send it in to HTC in Texas I think.
I will wait and see when they get back to me from the ticket escalation. Hopefully there's a kind soul there!

Mother board replacement to fix dead pixel
HTC charged me £128.00 to repair signal fault on my N1. They told me that it needs a new mother board as i've unlock the bootloader.
I think they riping peoples of who ever unlocked there bootloader and send for warranty.
I don't understand you, a new motherboard for the issue with the faulty signal?, or the motherboard is to lock the bootloader?
Not to be mean... but you did unlock the bootloader and void the warranty. It's clearly stated everywhere that this is the case.
I don't see what the problem is.
Seems HTC will 'change' the motherboard for anything.
When I thought I would be stuck on ERE36B for ever, I anonymously asked them if there was a way to get it regressed to official firmware. As you may have guessed, they told me they would have to replace the motherboard at a cost of £105
When I sent them my phone for a cosmetic issue, it came back with ERE27 and the same IMEI, so my original motherboard.
Sounds like they're just trying to scam people to be honest.
I've read elsewhere that HTC doesn't repair motherboards. Their fix for everything seems to be just to replace the motherboard.
Not to be mean... but you did unlock the bootloader and void the warranty. It's clearly stated everywhere that this is the case.

I agree but I really thought the build quality on a $500 dollar phone was going to outlast 3 weeks before I had to send it in. You have to see both sides of the story here. Sure it protects HTC but what if on the other hand there's a lot of faulty hardware out there and it actually starts working in their favor. As we're all noticing here now their "repair" process seems to just be an automatic new motherboard. Sounds like a rip off.
So after the escalation they still don't want to cover it with warranty. The rep on the phone says that replacing the motherboard could reinstate the factory warranty. Basically it looks like they are trying to do all these MB replacements on rooted phones so that you have a locked bootloader again & warranty...at the cost of $196.
I asked if i can get a quote for just a repair on the dead pixel and was put on hold for 10 minutes. Finally the agent gets back on the phone to tell me he needs to escalate the ticket in order to get a price quote for just the screen. So now I won't hear back from them until Monday (the earliest) in order to find out how much it is to fix a dead pixel issue.
This is the second time my ticket has been escalated and going onto a week without my phone. It seems like the escalating thing is a nicer way of them saying "don't call us back for a few days."
Getting very frustrated at this point.

I'm going to go read their warranty policies and also look to see if I can find an official message on the web from Google saying that only the software warranty is void. If they make no distinction, then its not even a plan B option for me.
Currently I want the Desire. If it doesn't become available with in the next month or so, I was going to get a Nexus One for the Verizon network.
I feel for you on this one. Activating a change in software really should not affect their hardware obligations to you. I can see them charging you if you sent your phone in and software caused an issue with your device some how but thats not likely the case here.

Thanks, I was trying to look over it myself as well. I don't see much clarification between hardware and software warranty.
I tried calling HTC to file a complaint (mostly over the repair process) but they have no complaint system set up.
I would love to be able to write someone higher up at HTC or even Google explaining my situation. I can't find any contact email on the internet. I know sometimes these things can be resolved just by getting in touch with corporate offices or headquarters directly.
Anyone have any useful (public) emails for either HTC or Google?

Keep me updated. I called t-mobile today and set up Insurance which covers lost/stolen/cracked screen/ blown up for 4.79 a month. Its a 130 deductible too. Worst case is I get my phone back, send them the swap and then play some nexus firsbee. If your in the Chicagoland area, please join me.

Ah crap. I've missed the 14 day insurance period by a couple of a days. I had no idea they offered it.
i know it's not related to the above issues but...
got dinged for 55 bucks for dust under the screen since i had an unlocked bootloader.
also pissed because the guy on the phone told me the bootloader would also be relocked as per my request. going to give them a call about that monday...
For a fee that is. Long story short my rooted phone would reboot every time I used data about 3 months ago. I tried flashing all types of roms, but the problem still persisted so I flashed everything on my phone back to stock. However more problems emerged and everything got worse and worse to the point that I couldn't charge my phone because it would get really hot and reboot itself and get stuck on the X. The phone was useless I couldn't make a phone call without the dam thing rebooting.
I sent my phone to HTC and I was told that my mainboard needed to be replaced and it wasn't covered under warranty, I asked the lady that was speaking to me why I wasn't covered under warranty and I was told that I was running a custom rom. I asked her why is it that so many other people who were running custom roms were able to get a replacement. I was told that it was because they were able to flash their phones completely back to stock and they couldn't flash my phone back to stock. What a load of bull! She told me that my mainboard needed to be replaced because they could not flash my phone completely back to stock in order to do their tests. My mainboard needed to be replaced because it was faulty not because of the rom I was running!
Besides my unlocked bootloader, everything was completely stock. I flashed everything back to 2.1 and the default recovery. I then updated to 2.2 through OTA.
It seems perfectly reasonable to me. HTC replacing defective displays/digitizers/buttons makes sense even if it is flashed with a custom ROM. There is no reasonable way that damage to these components would occur due to a custom ROM.
The mainboard however is a component that could easily be damaged by irresponsible overclocking or (far less likely) a bad ROM. HTC has no way of determining whether or not the damage was original or due to tinkering and in that case, especially since we were given plenty of warning, is justified in refusing warranty.
I sympathize with your plight but am siding with HTC on this one.
By stock they may mean v2.1. If they cant downgrade to 2.1 then maybe thats why they're having an issue.
By unlocking the bootloader you've voided your warranty anyway so no point complaining since they have no obligation to fix your phone.
unfortunately you were better off putting your device back to stock before sending it in.

Not once did she mention anything about the bootloader being unlocked voiding my warranty. If she said straight up that I had unlocked my bootloader and they won't repair my phone under warranty and that the people who were able to get their phone replaced were under different circumstances, I would have accepted the fact that I am SOL.
However that was not the case and she stated that they would not replace my mainboard under warranty because they could not fully flash my phone back to its original state. Because of this they need to replace my mainboard in order to get it to stock.
I've read enough posts on people who's phones were acting the same way as my phone was, difference though is that they got their phone replaced under warranty no questions asked.
My phone had the exact same problem, and I did the exact same thing. I unlocked to it to try flashing different roms. Well it didn't work.
Called HTc I was very polite about the whole thing, got a replacement. I did opt for a swap because I thought that if I sent it in for repair thy may notice the unlocked bootloader so I figured swap would be better and it worked out great!
Maybe call again and explain the whole thing, tell them you paid over $500 for this great phone, but you can't even use it for a a phone because of the factory defects, and you are sure you have they have seen this problem in the past with many other customers; like myself. And tell her that some people online recommend you try unlocking the bootloader so you could reflash it or something, and that you don't understand it all, regardless it didn't work and all you would like is a working phone. So ask if they would be willing to simply change the motherboard or send you out a replacement unit.
I don't know just an idea, worth a shot maybe talking to them again! Goodluck

tried the same exact tactic to get my macbook fixed but the mac genius was juts too stubborn. remember politeness+cluelessness is the way to get a warrantee acknowledged. well good luck with getting your phone fixed!
... where are all the people on this board that flame you if you dare to ask for a way to re-lock the bootloader? You know ... the ones calling one names and telling people that HTC will honor the warranty despite the bootloader unlock.
HTC did the same to me when mine overheated and cracked it's screen sitting on my desk charging overnight. File a report with the BBB if anything, I did after HTC kept my Nexus for 3 weeks and refused to fix it because of the bootloader and I had a new one 2 days later.
I broke some resistors on my motherboard. They wont fix it for free. I'm so angry.....you accepted the voiding of the warranty when you unlocked. The lady used the wrong terms but you know what she ment. If you void a warranty and the company still honors your voided warranty then good on them. They don't have to and flashing roms CAN mess up a motherboard by overheating it among other things (over voltage etc).

Well said, warranty is voided, end of story. We all agreed to those terms when we unlocked our phones.

I killed my Nexus One, replaced the display, but it turns out I need to replace the lower board as well. Anyone have a broken Nexus One they're willing to part with?
BTW, I don't care about the condition of the display, or outside shell.

How in the hell did you do that?
HTC also refused to repair my faulty power button because I had an unlocked bootloader and wanted to hit me with the cost of a new motherboard to fix it. I spent close to a week arguing with them (over phone and in person) before they relented to do it at no charge. My phone came back repaired but my motherboard was not replaced. They're just out to charge us for unlocking the bootloaders.
Sure glad I used the one-click root, after getting mine replaced for insensitive touchscreen...
I was trying to remove camera and when I was prying the plastic under the battery off I broke the resistors.
My phone did nearly the exact same thing your did. Every time GPS was used it would reboot. Every time I was on a call for a long period of time - reboot. etc.
I eventually called in a repair ticket, flashed my phone to complete stock (with unlocked bootloader), sent it in and they repaired it. Never said a word.
I had a rooted Evo. A few weeks ago, I began experiencing random reboots, and random unmounts of my SD storage volume. I unrooted completely (with S-ON) to a stock Froyo build. I didn't even install any apps, and the problems still persisted.
So I got myself an RMA and sent the phone into HTC for repair, as it's still under warranty. I had given the phone rep a very detailed description of the issue, and also instructed them NOT TO UPGRADE TO GINGERBREAD. I also included a very visible note in the package instructing them to do the same. I even went as far to detail the issues on another sheet of paper in the package, just for peace of mind.
HTC receives the phone on a Friday afternoon. On Monday, around noon, I receive an e-mail that the phone is on its way back to me, but with no information about the resolution. I called to inquire, only to find out that they couldn't find anything wrong with my phone, and shipped it back unchanged.
I received the phone last Thursday, powered it up, and much to my dismay, those numbskulls upgraded me to Gingerbread!!! So now I can't even root my phone, and restore my app data with Titanium Backup... which I f*ckin' paid for! To make matters worse, as the phone begins to sync my contact/calendar data from Google, the phone reboots.
Way to go HTC... buncha crackerjack a$$hats!!! Your sh!tty repair process cost me:
* a week without my Evo
* $9 to ship my Evo
* Use of Titanium Backup, which I paid for
* Use of my SSH daemon, which I paid for
* Participation in the Swype 3.0 beta program (since I can't uninstall Sprint's stock Swype 2.x app)
* Ability to resize my partitions, and use A2SD. I'll probably need to ditch a few apps now.
* Obvious ability to root and customize my phone to my liking
On top of all this, my phone is still broken, and still covered under a completely useless HTC warranty.
Or.... maybe HTC is this awesome company that would refuse to return a defective product to a customer while it's still under warranty. Therefore, I can only assume the phone was damaged by FedEx... but there's no way I'm opening that can of worms.
So I just technically received a factory-refurbished phone from HTC. It's my same phone, but it went thorugh their Q.A. processes. I guess my best option is to sign up for Sprint's rip-off protection plan at $7 a month, and then pay $100 to have them replace the phone. What a sham!
Anyone got any better ideas?

Umm you HAD the better idea buddy, the freakin' Sprint protection plan. No it wouldn't have cost you $100 to fix that problem, they would've handed you a new phone with no problem. If the new/refurb phone was busted, they'd have gave you a 3rd phone, no problem.
Unless you lose it, accidentally call Asurion or severely damage the phone, then it'll be $100... or $35 if the screen is busted. Otherwise the $7 per month is all it costs.
Here's the thing not many people know about the insurance. You must sign up for it within two weeks of purchasing the phone. Otherwise, they won't add it. My friend learned that the hard way.

Really, there's no good reason to NOT have the insurance.

I've walked in and had my screen replaced for free for that little white hot spot that some people have had issues with. Left it with them for a few hours and bam, new screen no charge. Have also walked into a Sprint store to get a replacement battery cover and they just handed me one wrapped in plastic, no questions asked.
I can't imagine why one would ever want to deal with HTC directly, honestly.
Same however, after talking with tech support sprit and htc I kinda knew from past experance they just read a script. So I did not send the phone back instaed reloaded 3.7 stock RUU with old radio rerooted and now it sits on "prof the dead walk" gingerbread rooted stock. I pacitencly await the updates.

I am sorry for your loss. It's kinda like a turd wrapped inside a lollipop. You have a working phone, but you can't customize it to your liking. I hope they root GB soon. I am currently rooted running MikG 2.15. I called Sprint yesterday to ***** about the crappy 3G in my area (don't even hit 1Mbit) and they told me to take it to a corporate repair store to have it looked at. I told the lady on the phone it's not an issue with my handset, it's Sprint's crappy network. She then preceded to speak to another tech who informed her that I wasn't running the latest firmware. I assured her I was, it's just I'm rooted but was running the updated 4.24 software. She then told me I still needed to take it to a store before they would send someone to look at the towers. [email protected]&$*... I said FINE. What about me being rooted I asked. She then told me that Sprint doesn't care about rooting anymore. So I take it to a store, where the tech and the manager tell me they can't look at it because it's rooted and my warranty is voided. [email protected]&$?.. So long story short, the tech felt bad for me and wrote some notes asking them to look at the towers. I haven't called today yet to ask them to send someone to the towers, though I am dreading it.

I'd be shocked if Sprint actually calls you to report their findings for something like that. Please stop back and let us know if they do!

Wow, sorry man. This was a trap, never... I repeat NEVER trust what a rep says without a 3rd opinion.
Anytime you return a phone, just flash the stock "rooted" ROM onto the phone, freshly wiped with the SD card out of the phone.

I run a warranty device support center for AT&T and I want to dispel some rumors that are going around about flash counters and voiding warranty.
1. Running custom software on any samsung device does not void your warranty as we have samsung reflash tools from samsung in every warranty center around the country.
2. Flashing custom software does indeed raise the flash counter but no one at at&t cares.
3. When you receive a warrant replacement with at&t the phone goes down to RLO ATC in FT worth Texas and is destroyed. You will not be charged for flashing custom roms
4. The only thing that will void your warranty is having liquid damage, physical damage, or being outside your 1 year warranty. Thats it, thats all.
Hope this clears up any questions you may have regarding warranty.

whats up with number 3? why are they destroyed? seems like a huge waste of money.

I could type up a similar declaration but that doesn't make it true. So if you really want to ensure us of the things you've said, show some official AT&T documentation backing up what you just said.
My daughters Atrix 2 needed to get replaced cause I tried to flash 2.3.5 over 2.3.6 without following the proper procedure and it failed the flashing process and ended up at the Fastboot screen and wouldn't boot the rom. Phone is just 9 months old. It also wouldn't send or receive MMS messages with the stock messaging app in the rom it was running. She took it in to the AT&T repair center and he got it to boot up but because I had CWM on boot installed it went right to CWM, he booted it up and noticed it was running a custom rom and told her he couldn't do anything for her since because the phone was "jailbroken" and running non-AT&T software.
Since he got the phone to boot again, I installed GoSMS Pro and her messaging issues were fixed so she ended up keeping the phone.

outsides are taken off and crushed into raw material and sent back to manufacturers. main boards, wafer, silicon, radios are then recycled and sent back to the manufacturer so they can install into new cases and refurbished back to the warranty service centers

I also was talking about samsung as this is a samsung forum.... we have samsung reflash tools that aren't available to the public to repair samsung issues... thats why flashing with samsung does not void the warranty. Read the OP please... nothing was said about atrix as it has a locked bootloader and requires bootstrapping and other non sense

I can jump in with a few things here:
AT&T's employee discount blows, to be honest. As a retail rep you get 2 lines, one with 500 and one with 1000 minutes. You then have to pay for everything a la carte. Data, texts, etc are all a paid addon, and you don't save much over a consumer plan. In addition, AT&T "reserves the right" to ask to inspect your phone for content and usage at any time, though admittedly it rarely happens. AT&T gives you a COU line and free phone (mostly of AT&T's choice), but they have the right to monitor anything & everything on it, and tell you not to use it for ANY personal use. Again, it's rarely inspected, but still... Screw that.
When I was with AT&T, I kept my Sprint line, because I was paying next to nothing with it.
As for destroying the phone casings, anything that has come into contact with the general public has to be destroyed for sanitary purposes. This is also why it's illegal to sell returned or used Bluetooth headsets. God forbid in the rare & unlikely instance you contracted a disease from a refurb phone? AT&T would be liable for millions in a lawsuit. It's cheaper to just destroy the casings.

As for custom roms, it's not a store by store basis, because the repairs are only done in repair facilities. With Sprint, the "official" ruling was that rooting was fine, as long as that wasn't the cause of the phone breaking. If your power buttons cracked and you had a rooted phone, they were (mostly) smart enough to know that a custom rom didn't crack your power button. We also reserved the right to take customers who treated us like assholes and tell them to go kick rocks. Treat the repair techs well, and you'll be treated like gold.

My GPS stopped working on my Atrix 4G. I took it to a DSC in miami...
They noticed my bootloader said 'unlocked' at the top, but they didn't seem to care. they just gave me a new phone.
It all depends on where you go, or who you run into. there is no policy, just upto them I guess.
Make sure when you post the documentation you post the mycsp I'd too...

My local att tech support has two representatives that assist customer. One is an indian that with all do respect it a total idiot and the other is a super short girl that even she cant believe that she works at the tech support. It takes them 45 minutes each to find out the diagnose after talking on the phone to some devine authority. Now you are saying they told you all that stuff about warranty. Well in my opinion that is not worth even my dogs crap because tech support reps most of the time are just a bunch on morrons.

Exactly why I asked for some official documentation. It doesn't effect me cause I rooted w/o tripping the counter, but I know tons of people here would be interested.

They do not destroy them, but actually tear them apart and refurbish other phones with the parts.

yes, I thought this was the case too. like let's say they take the camera out of it, so when they get a phone with a broken camera, they swap it out. or maybe the capacitor. or an internal speaker.

I work for VZ landline, and our discounts are so bad that it is cheaper for me to keep Sprint service.
I've come to the conclusion after unrooting/changing to stock rom that my WiFi and Bluetooth is defective, cause it shows very little access points compared to other S4s and Bluetooth is intermittent cutting in and out.
It's been over a month since I've received the phone, would I still be able to bring it to a Sprint Store and exchange for a new one, or would I have to ship it in to Samsung. Also, would I have to stock recovery/unroot before I give it back to them?
Anyone who works at Sprint or have done this before, please let me know!

You must unroot. You must flash stock mdc odin 1 click restore and wipe fully. They will laugh at you if you dont.
Put it completely back to stock. Reset the counter and binary to official. Odin the MDL full stock with data wipe. Wipe/format the internal storage. Remove the SD card. Do full factory reset and format internal memory. Pray. Don't act like you've been mucking around with the phone. They might want to do a factory reset and or flash the rom to official stock again. Take it back the next day and tell them it's still malfunctioning. Hope they put in an order for a refurb. If you can replicate the problem, show them. Sometimes one repair center might be less likely to get you a replacement. Find another repair center. When I went to a different place with a previous phone, they were more inclined to just order me a replacement. I had to go back three times within a month to get a fully working phone, because the replacements were defective. Don't be a jerk towards the employees.

I believe that it's a hardware defect maybe a loose wifi antenna. Went to sprint store and they're holding my phone right now, they said they'd charge $50 for repair if it's a defect but checkup is free.. I told them about a warranty and they told me that I'd have to go through Samsung to get that. Would it void my warranty if I opened up the phone myself?
If you have the TEP insurance a replacement would be free of charge.
You only have 14 days to return a phone if it is defective if the device was a new act or upgrade. A replacement without insurance is $50.
Your situation is difficult though. If the tech can verify the issue it is fine. Verifying your issue is not easy at all.

I was told around 2 weeks when I asked Samsung about replacing my phone because of a screen defect. Can't go that long without a phone though so I'm just dealing with my screen defect. I'll maybe get it replaced before I sell it or the year is up. Whatever is first.
Yeah I hate Samsung and Sprint, I'm probably going to have to pay $50 for a refurb'd replacement cause the phone they gave me is defective.
Does anyone know if I will void the warranty if I were to open up the casing of the s4?
