how do i convert videos taken with the blackstone?
i setup mpeg4 but neither windows movie thing editor nor virtualdub can handle the file.
but i can play it with mpc without any problems.
linux...at least i see the video
i like to convert it to some moviemaker compatible format so i can quick edit some files to one video with effects in between.

Blackstone videos are already highly compressed as it is, so recoding them only to be able to use them in movie maker would give you awful videos. your best bet is avisynth - a frameserving application which basically feeds uncompressed stream from original video to the editing application. The idea is this, you create a text file which contains a link to the input file, save it with an .avs extension and then open that with an editing application. The avs file could be as simple as this:
DirectShowSource("c:\VIDEO0001.mp4")
I tried it now, and it works. You need to download avisynth and install it. Unforunately, i don't remember which apps open .avs files.

i can not use it with moviemaker cause i just hear the sound and the picture is black.
so i thought i convert it to a format moviemaker can handle as it seems htc is saving it in some format that can not be used.
which i think is strange but...what do i know...

Well, here's the deal - every time you edit a video and save it, you are recompressing it, meaning you're getting a degraded picture quality. If you are only cutting out portions of video, then you can save it without recompression, meaning you get the same quality as the original file. The moment you add effects to the video (transitions, resizing, etc...), you have to reencode video - and get lower quality. Now, that may not be a big deal when your input files are high resolution videos, but when the input file is a heavily compressed ile, such as those made with Blackstone, it will definitely show.
Movie maker can't open mp4 files. The way i see it, if you really want to edit the files, your best bet is to download Super, a freware app which uses AviSynth as a part of it's encoding process, then output the files from blackstone as avi files in HuffYuv codec (lossless compression codec), open it in Windows Movie Maker, edit it and then save it. Note that Windows Movie Maker doesn't output to mp4, only wmv.
As far as getting only the sound an no video - deinstall all codecs or codec packs from your system and install ffdshow.

I just took for the first time a video clip with my Magician today, and had the Camera settings to
Capture Mode: Video
Capture Format: MPEG-4
Capture Size: Large
it produced a nice video clip file with in the .mp4 format (lets not talk about the quality)
I copied this file over to my SD card, and from there to my PC to play here.
It played by default using Apple Quick Time (7.0.3), no probs.
I tried to open it with WMP10 on my PC, and only got the sound, not video.
I was assuming, that a video clip taken with a Microsoft product (Magician WM2003) would play by default using the Microsoft pendant on the PC (WMP10), and MS does not rely on a 3rd party software (QT).
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or if I'm just missing the right codec on my PC to play back the file ?

Correct me if i'm wrong but i do believe the camera program on modern HTC devices (like the Magician) is made by HTC itself and not by MS. So it's possible it uses different kind of codecs.
MS isn't allowed to ship a lot of codec with WMP. Only some basic and MS-made codecs. So you have to rely on third party apps/codecs to play the .mp4 files.

You can use the VLC Player to Play almost any type of media including the mp4 , 3gp etc etc .

You can also install the Nero Digital MPEG 4 AVC h.264 dshow decoder , after i installed this , my wmp ver 10 was able to play the Mp4 video files.

but only motion decoding not audio track.
i see only motion without sound.
Hmmm , That is Strange Vigor_ , I thought the audio recorded in the video format of Magician was either mp3 , wma or wav . . . all 3 being suported by wmp. Will have to check this Thanx.
It's none of those. The audio is AMR Narrowband, whatever the blazes that is! I've been having the same problem converting it. AMR doesn't seem to be supported by much.

How to do it for free, though it's a ton of work
Okay, I've successfully done it now. My biggest problem was that imTOO 3gpp costs money, and I just couldn't justify spending the money on it.
There's probably a few different ways to do this, but here's how I've done it:
1) Separate the Video stream from the audio stream
I used Microsoft Graphedit for this. It comes in a Microsoft SDK, but if you google it, you can find it.
When you open graphedit and select render the file, you'll get a message saying that part of the stream isn't recognised. That's the AMR audio. That's step 2, so ignore. Assuming you've got an xvid mpeg 4 codec on your machine already (and I suspect also a 3ivx codec), a graph will show up starting with your video file and ending with a video renderer. Click on the video renderer, delete it, and click on the xvid decoder and delete it. Then add a filter called file writer to the video stream coming out of the 3ivx media splitter.
Run that and you have an xvid mpeg-4 video stream with no audio.
2) Separate the amr audio stream
I used Miksoft 3gp decoder for this. For some reason I couldn't do video with this tool, so I just clicked the "convert audio only" option. It gave me a PCM .avi file.
3) Mix the two together
I have used two programs for this, both locatable through google and both freeware. Virtualdub and TMPGENC.
Virtualdub is handy if you have to rotate the video stream. I don't think you can use virtualdub to finalize the video because the .avi sound file kicks up an error for me. But the video I wanted to convert was filmed on my JAM with it held lengthwise (aka 320x240), so when the file is normally viewed, you see it 240x320 and have to tilt your head.
I prefer to use TMPGENC and end up with an MPEG-1 file. Here's why...
You input the xvid video file as the video source, the .avi pcm audio as the audio source, under advanced, select "Full screen (keep aspect ratio)" instead of the "full screen" that is presented there, and then let her run. You end up with a video in mpeg-1 that is formated to 352x240 (NTSC vcr resolution), but with black stripes above and below so that the image isn't stretched or distorted, like it would be if you just went with "full screen". You can then convert that into an avi file with whatever software you want.
It's a ton of work to do, but for me, it was a better solution than spending another $30US on something I'd use minimally. I also do a fair bit of video work, so I had all the other tools and codecs handy.

The way I did it was to get the K-lite codec pack. Google it and don't download any versions from places that try to charge you for it, it's free. Also be aware of dodgy sites that may include spyware/malware with it. I've been stung a couple of times.
Then nearly any freeware converter will work. You can also play them in WMP.
Errrr...yes, that would seem to be a "faster" way of doing it...

hmmm, need help...can't seem to capture images (using the screen capture button) when playing mp4 files on the vlc player...i've imported the image on adobe photoshop but it was distorted...help?

Is there any software/player that can cut down dimension to fit VGA and be playable on Diamond DIRECTLY? For example, Diamond won't play 640x480 (it plays but freezes every 2 seconds).
It could be an all-in-one player or an intermediate streaming software like ORB. We all know ORB can cut down bigger dimension/resolution and stream the smaller to your phone, and the result is that every media file regardless of its dimension/resolution can play on your Diamond. Is there any software that can do exactly the same thing, but deal with FILES ALREADY ON YOUR PHONE? Basically it converts files already on your phone and simultaneously "streams" it to CorePlayer or WMP. Play as it converts.
But not a converter. I hate to convert in advance all those files to smaller size for Diamond, and keep bigger files for computer. I am sure a lot of you have all those "lone-night" movies that you abandon after watching once.
The CPU already chokes when it tries to playback high-birate video; converting on-the-fly just adds to the required processing. That is, it still has to read the file, demux the container, pass the individual streams into the codecs, and then instead of just displaying the decoded video on the screen (which it's already having trouble doing), you're asking it to take the video and re-compress it.
Unfortunately the vast majority of video codecs simply aren't scalar, so there's no effective way to do such a thing on a mobile device. It is possible to recompress on-the-fly by using a separate server, such as Flash Media Server on a PC or using a Slingbox, but obviously those files aren't locally stored.
When my Harrier (wm2003se) records video in its standard mp4 format, playback on the pc is greeted with a "samr" codec not found error, prohibiting sound. (This was just a bad marketing ploy that never took off.)
Renaming the extension to 3gp solves the error.
So I ask, is there anyway to record/save in the 3gp extension instead? Like a registry hack?
*I am not trying to record video in the 3gp format, I only want to save the result in .3gp instead of .mp4
ok, several things here:
1. if your pc is not able to playback those mp4 files, try vlc media player. it'll work, since it is not dependant on installed codecs but comes with a propreatary decoder, that works with nearly any media file extension. because you should really record in mp4 as it has much higher quality and resolution than 3gp.
2. changing the file extension hardly seems like a proper way to deal with a problem like that, it does not convert the file content, i cannot imagine, why that would work, except for a really strange media player, i mean, if i create a word document with word 2010 and it has the extension .docx, removing the x at the end does not make it readable with word 2003, instead of renaming it, you should rather encode it to another format.
3. i don't know about possible camera-related differences between the blueangel and the harrier, but if i wanted my blueangel to record in 3gp format, i'd go to camera (of course, why would i open the calculator here ), click "tools", "options", "modes", choose "video" in the first dropdown menu and in the 2nd one, named encoder, i would change from MPEG4 to H.263, which is 3gp
if it is absolutely necessary for you to work with 3gp, i hope the 3rd point works for you, but i think you would be better off, using mp4. if, however, it does not work for you, please make sure to post back, i would really like to know, whether the harrier is so much different.

Not sure if its the same software and different version. I just wanted to ask what are people using for optimal/high resolution conversion from your own videos for your tp2?
I know there are also the normal PC software dvd rips that I would download for my desktop. Not sure how it stacks up with the above ones that target specific for the windows mobile devices.

I personally rip my DVDs to my hard drive then use Handbrake to convert it to MP4 video. I set the quality down to 1 or 2 reference frames and 650kbps and end up with a copy of the film that for mobile purposes is as good as the original and takes up about 600megs. The films look absolutely awesome on my Touch Pro 2.
Rather bizarrely the built-in HTC Album program is able to make use of the H264 decoder on the MSM7200 and so plays the MP4 file one heck of a lot better than my copy of Coreplayer ever manages.
The only caveat is that Handbrake wants to name the file .m4v, while HTC Album wants it to be .mp4 .
dvd::rip
My favorite is dvd::rip, a free app available at http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/. You get great resolution (typically 480 x 256 from my favorite preset) with no skipping or audio drift.
It's a Linux app, which might put some people off, but it can probably be installed on a Windows box as it's a Perl program with a Gtk+ UI.

I spent last two weeks trying different app's to get best solution for Movie experience on our beloved Rhodium/Tilt2/Touch pro2 device.
The main idea was to get divx movie to play smoothly and to get best quality as possible.
As we know H.264 codec (mp4) is hardware supported and it gives best results.
So considering that, I got best video experience with inbuilt HTC player that supports hardware acceleration for video.
It does not have a lot of options, and scrolling forward and backward is a little cumber stone, but it provides the best picture so I think (IMHO) is still the best choice.
When Choosing right software my main goal was to have as few steps as possible.
I found that the easiest way to do the conversion is with ImTOO Video Converter Ultimate 6. (http://www.imtoo.com/video-converter.html)
I tried a lot of different software, Trial and Freeware, and ImToo proved to be the best from lot of different perspectives. So it's my number one choice for this task (and also some other video encoding stuff.)
STEP1. Subtitles (Skip to STEP2 if You don't need them)
In case English is not your native language, you would probably (like me) want to have some subtitles with your movie:
You will need to convert *.srt and *.sub subtitles to *.ssa type, so You could get 'Outline and Drop Shadow' effect.
'Subtitle Workshop' (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Subtitle_Workshop) seems perfect for that. (It has all needed settings and also Batch conversion option)
Press Shift+Alt+L to get to Settings/Output menu, where You can set the subtitle settings like Font, Color, etc.
Choose SubStation Alpha (*.ssa)
Border style: 'Outline + drop shadow'
Font:Arial, Bold, 22, (works best for me), encoding...
Load Subtitle and save it as SubStation Alpha format or use Batch Converting option under Tools/Batch Convert options (Ctrl+M) (if You have more than one subtitle to convert):
-set the source folder for subtitles, output folder, FPS and SubStation Alpha format.
STEP2. Encoding to H.264 format with Imtoo
a.Load your video file
b.Load the profile in general video format/ 'H.264/MPEG4 AVC video'
and set conversion settings to
Video: (Manually enter!) Video Size 800x480,
Note: If You enter for example 576x432 instead 800x480, there will be no sound on your HTC, only video. Don't ask me why, it's the same thing that happens to lots of people with many different encoders and it has something to do with AAC settings detailed, which will also change, when you change video settings....but I am not enough in to hardcore encoding, to understand what is the reason, I only know that this problem appears to be very common when converting for Rhodium with different software....
Bitrate 256K, Frame rate 25FPS(should be same as sub file FPS!)
Audio:Mpeg-4 AAC, 44100, 128K
Now You should set/add Subtitles:
Go to: Edit/effect/Subtitles. (Note: only Ultimate version of Imtoo!)
Add Sub if not already there, and set font to Arial, Style to Bold and Size to 22 (or smaller if You prefer)
Convert the movie and transfer it to Your Touch pro2
That's it!
Enjoy playing Your file on HTC.
Final Output size of the file is not the same as stated Output Size, nor it is the Bitrate. Imtoo bug I guess...But File plays smoothly enough at least for my taste.

What i do is open you tube in chrome and i already have chrome extension installed on chrome.http://www.chromeextensions.org/music-videos-photos/chrome-youtube-downloader/. So when i play video i get options to save video in all the available formats and the Mp4 video i get is usually 20mb or 25 mb (sometimes less than that) in best quality.
Other thing you can do is go to this site http://keep-tube.com/ and downlaod video in MP4 format in great quality.
I think the best option is chrome extension because you get best quality video/audio with less size

I don't know why you do this, just download core player
I watch LOST season 6 on my phone just download jackos s2 rom and disable manila for better performance
I use Pocket Divx Encoder to make xvid files of my favorite videos and then play them with CorePlayer using the QTV setting for best quality.
I use DivX Player. It was made for QVGA but works just fine on TP2, just the menus & fonts are small. It'll play DivX encoded AVI's that must DVDRips are.
