Anyone downloading an update? - G1 General

My friend called and asked me why his phone was downloading like crazy. Trying to explain to him how to check for updates is like trying to teach my dogs quantum mechanics...
So has anyone else's phone been downloading something? If so, can you check your DDMS log for a URL to the ZIP?

Are you thinking that maybe the fabled "cupcake" update is coming down from T-Mobile? My phone was syncing like crazy last night...but that's about it.

Please don't joke around with cupcake!

my phone was sync'ing alot last night too

SMS time is messed up

Sup guys,
Idk if you have been experiencing the same problem as me, but whenever I receive a txt, the timestamp is always 4 hours before the real time. Is there any way to correct this?
yeah mine has been the same way since about 5 this morning. Im rooted with TwistedZero V5. any help is greatly appreciated.
I have experienced the same problem as of around 7 this morning EST. I am going to try to update again
go post this in general or in the thread for the rom
This used to happen on me (I'm in Canada) before 1.5 released.
Are you using cupcake?
If not, you can turn your time zone to +0, or use "Handcent SMS" from the market.
This has happen to me in the past with Tmo, they said it was because of tower maintenance or something it took them about three months to get it right it sucked the whole freakin time. Hope it doesn't take that long for yall
it is tmo because my friend that has a sidekick id is messing up too
You're all overlooking to real cause. Somebody from the past is clearly trying to contact you.
I'm using the Rogers ROM and I'm having the same issue since sometime late last night. I've set my time zone temporarily to Casablanca (GMT+0) and it makes it slightly better, the times are still kinda wacky but it's closer to normal.
I'm in Alabama btw...Birmingham area.
im in mobile,al and its the same here on jachero 1.64

This is clearly the right answer.
(ppsssttt, SMS time stamps are handled by the carrier. Dont tell anyone, guys. It's a SUPER big secret.)

Don't BRICK your phone with the new update!

I think this needs a separate topic to get everyone's attention.
So after reading up this morning on various forums, there are two ways people are bricking their phone:
Being impatient and doing a battery pull. The update takes up to 30 mins. It will sit on the 4G logo screen for a while. Don't touch it!
Running the update again. There is a bug where it notifies you the same update is available. Only run the update once!!! A second time WILL brick your phone!

I like how you put that, good idea.
I just want to say that I'm completely stock, and the update didn't take nearly a half hour. Download plus install took maybe 15 minutes.
Yeah, same here but I read that some people are taking 30 mins. I just put it there to be safe.
I assume the reason it takes so long is because it is updating directly OTA?
If so, why doesn't the phone download the entire update, confirm the files and then update locally? Doing it this way should be MUCH faster and avoid this issue.

no one in their right mind would do a real OTA update, there are way too many variables to be transfering system files and updating at the same time. They download the update, confirm file integrity, then update from the file on the SD card.

Thats what I would have expected. So why does it take 15 minutes!! I have never flashed a rom that took longer than 3-4 minutes.
Edit: Don't forget also that no developer in their right mind would release an update that would brick the phone....and yet reports are that it is pretty easy to do!

You download it, then you can choose to install now or install later.

idk, who says that HTC/Sprint are master coders and there are zero bugs in everything, there could be a bug in it that makes it sit in a few places.
there is a bug with this update that causes it to show up twice and applying it the second time bricks the phone.

Update only showed up once for me. No issues.
Yep worked fine for me. Also, easytether works fine with this update.
The reason the update is taking so long is because it's over 21mb. There's a new radio, updated qik, updated quickoffice, and tons more. That's also why the phone has to reboot 3 times also.
thanks for the information.

Really that's weird.. You are not having any issues? Everyone I've talked to it is taking around 15min and 2-3 reboots. I guess its your lucky day!

Unless the first two were silent... the process took about 15 minutes from start to finish, and I only had the bootup sound once, then it was done. No issues.
It is bricked. How to de-brick it?
As many others, I have inadvertently bricked the phone by installing the update twice.
Does anyone has a slightest idea how to debrick it? Waiting for a replacement might be quite lengthy ...
bump...
this is important to get back to the top with all the non-substantiated posts about "update = brick"...
this has facts - read them and follow accordingly... update = POSSIBLE brick
R
lol! an hour too late.
dammit.. my phone is bricked!
just when I start to like this phone....
On the phone with Sprint. The tech said they are getting a lot of calls about bricked evo.
Good job HTC! Time to sack those programmers.

Today I had another update...

And Im still on 1.6. The update was 151mb and was my second one in a month. There is 2 new apps in the launcher, Creatouch(makes patterns when you touch the screen) and TopApps. This last update I had was around 4 weeks ago and was around 70mb.
The setting in my phone now are:
Firmware: 1.6
Baseband 1.1.31
Kernel: 2.6.29-rel semc-androidATsemc 2
Build: R2BA026
Any ideas why I keep getting useless updates that barely make a change, other than adding apps I cant remove?
Cheers, Phil (eagerly awaiting 2.1)
PS, the re-captcha on registration is bloody hard, took me 15-16 goes to beat it, almost gave up

Sorry, I did a quick browse, but I've not been on the forum since I owned my Wizard(even had to reg a new account). Im guessing its nothing to get excited about then
Cheers anyway!
And sorry for another useless post
Nothing at all.
Just so many people over excited about the update they think anything and everything is an update.
they get excited every time they get a text and their phone beeps thinking its the update.
and before they actually check if it is, they come here and post about it.
so yea, we get quite a lot of these threads, lol
you guys have your pussys jumping.....jesus!!!! i`m tired to see topis like this

For those that got their OTA over the air...

IE, by getting a text/notification on their phones and not downloading from the link...can you please post where you are and approximately when you received your notification?
I just want to see if there's any kind of a pattern.
I think some of us prefer to just wait for the notification, rather than download it and have to jump through hoops for one reason or another, and those that haven't gotten it are probably wondering why and when they might.
Thanks in advance.
I'll second that, but my theory is that the server might be going by date of purchase- oldest first... I got my G2 just shy of 2 weeks ago, live in CA and nothing yet-
Just download it and put it on the phone. There are no hoops... it's super easy.
you can follow the instructions in my OTA thread (which was apparently moved to Android Dev.)...
I was going to wait for the OTA update initially but I came to the conclusion that it was going to take a while before I received it...so I updated manually.
Very simple process, nothing can go wrong & you'll notice a great performance boost in the phone itself.

I agree took maybe 10 min to do it all.
i just did mine manually why wait till u receive the update.
in terms of finding out if some1 in ur city has gotten it and what not... as far as i knew from the g1 updates, they were sent out randomly. it didnt matter if u were the 1st person in the world 2 get the phone or last.
this is what i have heard and read from my g1 days. supposedly it was a random thing.
Just got mine about 5 mins ago....Long Beach, CA.

I got mine yesterday... very early. I preordered the G2 so... there might be something to that guess of date of sale. Who knows though? really, just download it from the link. Any newb can do it in like 10-15 minutes. no need to wait...
Its completely random. My wife and two friends got theirs on different days. I just said f it and manually updated

Got mine this morning Friday mornign around 8 or 9am in metro Atlanta
Can't you use the CHECKIN code to force the OTA? My wife just got the G2 a couple days ago, I did the checkin, and within minutes she received the OTA.

If I were T-Mobile, I would actually try to *ensure* that the OTA goes out in a geographically random manner. Geography would be the one of the *last* places I would look for any sort of pattern. It's probably done via IMEI #s.
When I checkin it just says it checked in and that's as far is it goes.

I checked in many times and it doesn't really help unless you have been out of service or had the phone off... it will come to you when its ready checking in doesnt really help any in my case... I checked in over and over and over... this morning on the way to work the update just came... made my morning!

It won't notify you of the OTA until it's done downloading it. To see if it's downloading, go to Settings -> About Phone -> System Updates. If the checkin works, you should see it downloading there.

This morning I woke up about 10 minutes early by a faint light on the floor, it was my screen on full blast lol, with the words, "Upgrade radio etc etc blah blah." O went ahead and click yes and accept and about 10-15 minutes later it was done.
Havnt noticed anything yet, I hope my once every 2-3 day radio loss will stopp happening. Ill drive home and when I get home my radio will be off (no reception) and airplane mode if off also, nothing has been triggered. Only way to get reception back is to restart. Since it only happens once every 2-5 days I dont consider it a big enough deal to bring in. Especially since i dont have dead pixels and i have a strong hinge.

The main servers crashed and have to be replaced so it's going to be a while.
Their Twitter posted yesterday saying they hope to be up in 24 hours, so hopefully by tomorrow.
