all suggestions welcome, REF tomtom application while on a motorbike - Touch HD General

hi all,
have just recently got tom tom up and running on my blackstone,
have a few questions as no doubt they can be resloved using applications and configurations in one way or another,
i will be using this feature on my motorbike as i cant stand driving cars
and due to this have encountered a few issues.
as i cant see the screen as the phone is in my pocket is there any way i can disable the backlight and lock the touch screen/ hard buttons and still have the tom tom software running?
i will have a head set on in my helmet so all i need is the voice directions from the software,
also, can i block all incoming calls?
i suppose i could just switch it to divert prior to getting on my bike.
last question,
when first installing the tom tom software i went outside the house to see if it worked while on foot, and the GPS reception was perfect...
i then went in installed some 3rd party route planning software on my PC to test routes and all of a sudden the gps signal is awful, it keeps dropping out. will only connect for a few seconds then drop again.
is there any thing i can do or install to improve gps performance?

TomTom Not full screen

Can anyone please help, I use a XDA Exec with TomTom 5.1 and it works fine, But is there way like on TomTom 3 where i can have TomTom not running in full screen mode.
I like this way as i can keep a eye on the signal strength of the phone whilst driving, as mine like others and looses signal and needs a soft reset to fix it, But of corse with TomTom running you cant see if the phone is out of service
Thanks
John
Unlikely! TTNav-5 appears to be the version for their stand-alone TomTom-Go devices with a few bodges to get it to run (sometimes) on a PDA.
Although TTNav-5 has a few nice touches over v3, as far as PDA navigation software goes, TomTom seem to have lost their way!
Admittedly a personal opinion, but I've been using TTNav since the first version.

I agree completely! TT3 was far more flexible IMHO than this new 5.1 version, which seems crippled and unhelpful by comparison.
I'm wondering about using alternatives. Has anybody who's tried both TT and other nav systems got any comments? People mention CoPilot 6, but as far as I can tell, that runs off an SD card that they supply, which is no use when your SD card slot is used for music storage in the car.

John -
My solution to the same problem was to install PocketPlus and use its button mapping and task switching features to program the pointless videocall button on the keyboard to switch apps. One press while looking at TomTom takes me straight to the screen I saw before opening TomTom (media player? Today screen?), where I can check my signal strength or control my music. Another press takes me back to TT. Worked fine. But once again I'm having to use a bodge to overcome limitations of crap software.
Thanks for the replies, i am glad i am not the only one that is frustrated with it. I will try the sugestions.
Thanks again. John

Bluetooth Real GPS device

Can you obtain GPS location (lat/long) from a TomTom 500 via bluetooth to the Universal?
My thoughts are to use the Tom Tom like a normal GPS device for when I am driving (SDIO/bt GPS for the phone not really wanted at the mo, in case I get a different device later), and then to record my trips via some software (self developed if necassary) on the Universal.
TIA
Gareth
seems like the silence means a no. ho hum
I'm pretty sure lat/long feature is available in TomTom- I remember looking into that when I first installed TT on my JAM.
So you should be able to use your own software to do something with it. Perhaps there's already an app that does what you want. I remember someone else here on the forum wanting to do a similar thing.

TomTom in htc touch dual

Hello every body,
Can anyone know if TomTom is ok in htc touch dual?
If yes, can anyone give me a link, were i can download it, and recent map of europe?
best regards
I have TomTom 6 Navigator running fine on my Touch Dual, using a Qstarz BT318 external GPS. There were no problems during installation. Although it is a little awkward having to carry the external GPS, at least it has its own 1100 mAh battery so both devices last a long time in GPS mode.
I couldn't find the TomTom software available to download anywhere (legally). I bought the DVD from this company: http://www.digital-fusion.co.uk/
Item: 1T90.015
Quantity: 1
Product: Tomtom Navigator 6 Software + Maps Of Western Europe Dvd Unit Price: GBP 60.81 (Excl. VAT)
Very impressed by the TomTom software - even with a 2.6" picture, the 3D view is very usable whilst driving.
Thank you very much
Best reagards
if you want to be "naughty" then searching will get you where you want. We can't provide links here I don't think, but all the usual torrenting sites have it.
My (bought) copy, weirdly, boots up when I switch my phone on - it's not in the startup but it does anyway. Perhaps cause I took the shortcut off my home screen?
Also, one thing to be aware of - if your phone is in vibrate mode, and you start Tom Tom, when you have finished & later set your phone to non-vibrate, you'll find it's muted your ringer volume. I missed loads of calls before I realised what the culprit was.
Other than that it works fine on my touch dual, with a similar GPS antenna (incidentally, just posted elsewhere that my battery on my antenna just lasted since Sunday afternoon (it's not Thurs eve) since I didn't realise I'd left it on. A bit astonished at the battery life of the thing!!!
Garmin XT also gets good reviews, some claim it's better.
no problems here w the tom tom.
just take into account the mute fact.
anyway the external gps takes longer than other devices to work fine. the com ports are more complicated than i thought. but nothing u cant solve in a day or two.
i cant put a shortcut in my homescreen. anybody knows how to?
thanks

shortcut: look in your today screen items - it's in there.. or should be... in fact it should've appeared by default
em, i found the ext gps easy... just use "other"... NMEA... I think.. took 5 mins to work out.
let me know if you have probs, i can check out the settings used
i know but its doenst appear,
anyway its not a big deal. plus, i guess its a version problem.
and... talking about the ext gps, i guess the prob doenst come from tom tom but the pda. i took me time to figure out the com port number to paired the device.
i have it as com 7, com 4, 4800, check gps automatic.
btw, i didnt use other nmea because i have a bt gps receiver.
i forgot what com port i choose at tomtom.
but no need for that when i connected it thru google maps.
dont know. just works.
thank you for your help.
Tomtom not visible when receiving call
I used to have a HTC 8310 smartphone (Mobile 5 and Tomtom 5.20). The good thing was, that when Tomtom was working and I then received a call on thr 8310, I would see the Tomtom screen again after a few seconds while continuing talking. Only the Tomtom voice would de-activate while speaking to the other person. That was excellent, because I could still see where I was supposed to be driving while speaking to another person on the phone at the same time!
I now have a NIKI 100 (Mobile 6.1 and Tomtom 6) and I find that the Tomtom screen does not re-appear immediately after accepting a call. The screen stays on the dial-screen the whole time. Only after the call is finished, Tomtom comes back automatically.
Does anyone know a way to change this, because it's pretty annoying.
Thanks in advance!
I have the same "problem". Before on my wizard it worked like you describe and now it stays in the dial-screen and Tomtom doesn't reappear. Also when the call is finished I have to switch back manually by clicking on the small icons in the corner on the right bottom.
I also have a NIKI 100, Tomtom 6 and WM6.1 (Niki Project).
Does anybody knows how to fix this?

GPS Questions

I have some GPS related questions. I am looking at replacing my dedicated TomTom device with TomTom GPS software on my HD2.
1. Can the device still play music through the standard media player when running the GPS software
2. What happens to the GPS and Music which are both running when a call comes in. Currently music pauses automatically when a call comes in
3. Any idea how much of a network hit the GPS software has i.e. will I get a large bill at the end of the month. I know it all depends on how much you use the GPS software but just to get a unit sizing assume a 30 minute GPS journey.
4. Does TomTom work via the Navipanel
5. Does TomTom provide a demo download (as CoPilot did)
Thanks
1. Yes.
2. Don't know - I 'd have to set it up and try it but I've rcvd calls during Tomtomand when music is playing and as music will play while Tomtom is running I guess calls would come thru both together as well.
3. GPS doesn't touch the network unless you opt of optional traffic warnings etc - the GPS signal and hence navigation is totally independent of network connections so is free of any cost.

New Treo Pro thoughts and Tom tom question

I have been using windows mobile devices now for about 5 years,my first phone was an mda compact III which was excellent.next up was the Mda Compact 5 which also is a very capable device, might I ad these 2 devices were brilliant with the sat nav never missed a beat allways having plenty of satalites ,my main reason for having these windows mobile devices is all in one phone and sat nav as I am a driver and sat nav is a MUST .I allways have the latest version of Tom Tom navigator installed on my phone. This is when I started to get fed up with touchscreen phones as they can be so annoying with wrong finger scrolling and such likes, I decided I now need a device with physical keys.
This were my search for qwerty keyboard phone began, firstly I bought the Samsung i780 which on the face of it was a fantastic device it was solid, fast ,However the gps was just awfull I loaded up my tom tom but I tried in vein to install endless apps like gps test /gps gate, etc etc and just could not get it to work right,
Next up was the I-mate 8502 again another nice device but 10 -15 resets a day all got too much and that went also.
So here I am with the Palm Treo Pro ,managed to get a nice example from Ebay for £70,really nice device loads my tomtom 7 with 850 maps on no problem, really likin the phone ,I think I have finally found a phone that will suit all my needs ,spb mobile shell to get away from the home screen and I`m away. First day using the Phone with the tomtom on and the the phone freezes on me twice ,soft reset sorts it out .,I have read endless amounts on this since then with no conclusive remedy.IS THERE AN ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM or is this fine phone going to be a non starter,I will be so disapointed as i really enjoy using this device, all help or comments will be greatly received.
Thanks in advance.
well if you have a data plan, i highly recommend getting google maps. otherwise you could try bing. both are very good applications and save you a lot of space. sorry im not familiar with tom tom, but i do know that there is not too much ram on the treo. if you close all your other applications in the background, you might get it to work then =]
Thanks for your reply .Think I have found a remedy to the tomtom freezing daily,I changed the baud rate from 4800 to 9600 and so far no more freezing and losing sats, only been 2 days but no more hang ups.

Hi, if u don't mind shelling out some more money i would recommend u try Garmin's navigation software. I've been using it almost daily for about 6 months with fast gps detection rate, etc, and it has never frozen up on me. and as computerguy pointed out, it works best if other applications in d background are exited.
P.S. I'm using a custom ROM though.
I'd second the Garmin software. Used to run the TomTom software on mine and had nothing but troubles. It would either freeze up or just would lose the GPS signals constantly. Garmin might not be as nice to use but its rock solid in comparison.
I agree about TomTom freezing. I don't have it as often as you do but I do have occasions where it seems to lose all track of where it is.
I have switched to Sygic MM10 and it's brilliant. It uses the same maps as TomTom but has better graphics and is rock solid
