Well after 18 long months I'm due for an upgrade on my beloved Hero, but with all the shenanigans at MWC recently it's left me completely lost as to what I will upgrade to.
My options are limited to staying direct with the network (Vodafone UK) when my current contract runs out at the end of March.
I did whittle it down to either the Nexus S or the LG Optimus 2X, but with the new HTC and Samsung devices on the horizon I'm wondering whether these are the best options.
The Nexus S did represent everything I wanted to upgrade to: quick, good hardware and most importantly direct Google updates (Hero users know how important this is all too well). However with the pending release of the dual-core phones, and improved graphics with the Tegra 2 I'm wondering whether sacrificing the speedy OS updates (scary thought) for raw speed and hardware would be a better 'future proof' option, especially as I will probably be tied into a 2 year contract.
Every time I read a review I change my mind and it's driving me mad!
Personally I am waiting on the LG Optimus 3D which comes out late april. But that may change to the SGS II. I am not sure yet, it is one of those.
I have not found any of the big UK networks offering the 2X on upgrade, which is a shame as I would be more then happy to go with that phone.
Although with the LG's I am not sure what the dev scene is going to be like on it tbh.

The dev scene for any handset is going to be dodgy with so much choice on the market.
I was banking on the 2X being on Vodafone as it's been shown on Vodafone Germany, like the Nexus S was first, but the going for an LG handset seems like a risky decision with no idea about Android updates and like you said, dev scene.
I am planning to change my phone too, but I am wating for the a dual-core phone with nvdia tegra.
I think, that you should get any phone with this hardware, specially if you will have 2 years contract and doesn't matter which phone (even thus I like HTC), because eventually you can root it and install custom roms..
If you buy now I phone with a single core and adreno GPU, maybe next year it will be already old..
You can't keep up with technology nowdays, I think personally, I made a mistake to buy an Hero last April, now the CPU is too old and it doesn't even support Flash... now I realized I should have spent more and bought a Desire, even thus I like my Hero!
I agree with the last speaker, I think one should buy a dual core as a next phone, to assure that it doesn't get to slow in one year... I'm leaning towards a LG Optimus 2X, but I'm a little bit afraid of the quality of LG phones... I'd rather buy an HTC but their dual core is to big for me.

I wonder why HTC will still release phones that are using Single-Core Processors?
I think the successor to Desire HD would have dual-core processor, might be coming out October like the original did. My contract just ended, and I have no idea which phone to buy. Would've gone for Atrix but I hate motoblur!
Who wants to update their device they may be can Try Motorola Atrix 4G

They've already announced the Desire S which is a single core processor (Hummingbird same as the Nexus S I think) coming out Q2 2011
I am a bit more concerned with the new contract. I am on T-Mobile in the UK and they have recently reduced the mobile data allowance for new and upgrading customers from 3Gb to 500Mb, which looks pretty low. I know that some other providers did the same, so I guess it might be the trend.
I'd say go for the sgs2. its dual core, has a beautiful super amoled plus screen and its the thinnest smartphone you can get in most parts of the world (NEC are releasing a phone exclusively for china or japan, not sure, and its less then 8mm thick)

Galaxy S II is likely option for me
My contract on T-Mobile (best major mobile for unlimited internet (yes we get 3-5GB)) has just expired but I'm waiting for the LG Optimus P920 3D; Hero was first Android, P920 first 3D phone... simples.

Just saw this.... just as I was looking to get one!
That's a bunch of crap if you ask me. Great phone, one of the only decent phones with a decent keyboard.

Wow. I've had mine since Nov. Came from a G1, I don't think they will send us referb G2's cause I had a Sidekick LX and they day the sidekick 2008 came out my LX broke and they sent me a brand new 2008. So if anything we may be in luck with Mytouch 4G S. But nine months is such a short time to issue EOL. Where's the update anyway?

They have to make room for the Sensation. After thats out for awhile then they will probably release the g2 replacement. Besides, they probably have enough in insurance to cover the people with a g2.
You crazy if you going to get a G2, when Sensation and Galaxy s2 are coming out. Unless you need a keyboard, I see no reason to get it over the other two. Plus you can buy a S2 or sensation when it comes out and sell it on ebay and buy 2 or 3 used g2.

Reasons are simple:
I want a full keyboard,
The price is right (48.88 on upgrade at Wal-Mart)
I don't wanna wait for the Doubleshot,
I don't like the hardware specs of the Sidekick, nor do I want samsung.
Did I mention the price at wal mart? (Cost is a huge deal when you are supporting a family and a mortgage!)
On a happy note, 4g is starting to show up on phones in SE wyoming!
I cant believe this myself but sound like the G series maybe a thing of the past with ATT in the picture. I dont understand how can you drop your best phone! lol
Well I guess this means we won't be getting gingerbread
I'm sure we will, In the article is says nothing about us not getting gingerbread. Just be patient and wait until next month before you worry about it.

The G2 is T-Mobiles freaking most reliable android phone weve carried since the day it came out. I work in one of the most high volume stores in the country and we get the G2 with issues atleast once per 3 weeks and we still manage to trouble shoot and fix the issue on the phone. We don't have any phone that compares to it. Its been 8 months or so since its release and it still rapes in sales . Amazing!!! All you idiots that complain about being on your 3rd or 4th phone. There's one thing we always say in store... "USER ERROR!!!!!!!".I had the phone one month before release and rocked it till about two weeks ago, I got the G2x...still rock solid. Punks!!!
hahaha he makes me feel proud about my good ol' G2
Damn, what the ****?? I don't understand why they're pulling the plug on the G2 when phones like MyTouch 3G Slide is still available.. If anything, do away with that one before you do it on the G2 which is by far a better phone in every single aspect than the MT3GS.
T-mobile needs to get their priorities in order. Mytouch 3G and 3G slide are still sold. They just put G1 on EOL last year I believe. G1 had 3 years of life. While we G2 users only get 9?

Now, tell me something. What will Gingerbread do for us? My friend is using Gingerbread and he said that there is barely a difference between 2.2 and 2.3. ,

One good thing I can say about this is the g2s will be rare since they won't be in production. Meaning if we want to sell ours we can bump the price. Ha

Hmm I'm trying to trade mine now for a Nexus S and every buyer wants at least $90 on top. What you said has got me thinking about holding on to it, since mine is in pretty good condition.
But yeah its sad to see the G2 gone. I think with the end of the G2 comes the end of the G series, especially if the the Tmobile buyout goes through.
I suspect one of the major reasons is the sheer number of hardware issues the device has faced - particularly with the screen. I'm on my third g2 in only 8 months and i handle my devices with care (unless you count stock OS which I gutted for cm7 ). Honestly, when i returned my g2 for warrant repair last time I was hoping they could replace it with a different device. Guess not - still, what this will do give those needing warrant repair a way out of the g2 hardware issues and boost the price for well maintained g2s on ebay.
I'm thinking this has to do with something an earlier poster said. The G series may be going away. Despite the G1 being the genesis of Android, nobody in the "mainstream" knows that. Ask an average joe what the first Android phone was, and I'll bet money they'll respond with "the Droid". Marketing does a lot.
I just find it strange how the G2 has been killed off prematurely and how the G2X is "temporarily out of stock". Throw in all of LG's manufacturing woes and the impending release of the MyTouch 4G slide, and the G series looks to be in trouble. Knowing T-Mobile, they'll want to highlight the "consumer-friendly" (and really cheesy, IMO) MyTouch line of phones. Just a theory... I actually hope I'm wrong.

I don't see any particular reason for them to continue with the HTC VISION. The HTC DOUBLESHOT (very soon) is basically the same exact phone with a CPU upgrade and a front facing camera... possibly more RAM and internal storage as well. The screen is identical, probably the exact same part, the keyboard is very very similar, etc. Probably the same mainboard with a few different parts soldered onto it, and a different casing.
Also I wonder how much of this has to do with a push to retire phones lacking FFC and NFC - increasingly becoming standard components for android devices.
I have had the Epic since day 1 and within the first 3 days had to return the phone twice. Maybe another week later i had to have my third Epic replaced, mind you they were all brand new from the store not refurbished. The past week my most recent Epic has been freezing, microphone going out, texts being sent 3 days after they were meant to have been.... Well long story short i needed a new phone and ive always owned HTC's until the Epic. I have to say both phones are amazing, the Epics screen is hands down much crisper than the Evo's but the EVO's ram is slightly quicker. I would like the communities opinion on wether or not I should keep the EVO or get another Epic or keep the EVO till the 3d edition comes out which falls under my one month return policy What are the 3d's specs looking like compared to the others and is the 3d even going to be worth it? I have SPB mobile shell 3d and showd it to the manager up at sprint and he said that it is almost identical. Sorry if i ranted but im in a very happy mood right now.
Keep the Evo, run CM7 on it, and wait for the 3D.
This keep the E3D thing looks beast.
I say sell both old ass phones and get a Evo 3d or a GS2.
Thanks for the quick replies guys. im thinking im gonna to go the 3d route. it seems to be most logical deal. plus the 2 cores wont hurt . If anyone has any other information or opinions they are most welcome, thanks.
I have an Evo 4G. I've considered ditching it for an Epic, but only because I've missed the physical keyboard since I bought it (first day) and didn't know that the Epic or other physical-keyboard phones were coming. I'm running Sprint Lovers' 2.2, haven't put GB on because of bugs in it.
One note on the Evo 3g: as of now, the boot-loader is still locked. HTC says they will unlock it. No idea the timeframe.

Anyone have any info about upcoming release of HORN?
From what I've read in the next couple of days. I know iOS got it a few days ago and it's said to come to android a week later so the wait won't be long.
Current devices:
Asus Nexus 7
HTC Sensation 4G
T-Mobile mytouch 3G (HTC Magic) [DISCONTINUED]
When you realize your on xda like it's a full time job.
So, first a bit of backstory. I own an HTC Sensation 4G, rooted and running Android 4.2.2. I like the phone, but it is slowing down and I am looking to upgrade. Specifically, I want to get a Nexus 4 (surprise)! To the main question though, Should I get a Nexus 4 now?
Being 6 months old, I take this phone to be fairly recent. Also, having constant updates is great. Honestly though, will it stand the test of time and still be worth it another 2-3 years down the road? I mainly ask this question because I am graduating and money will (most likely) be involved for an end of the year present. Even if it wasn't, I am planning on splurging a bit. The question is, should I wait another 6 months or more? My Sensation works (for the most part).
Any responses are greatly appreciated, and thanks for taking the time!
I had a gs3 and upgraded to this a month ago and it was worth every penny. You will not regret your purchase. If I were you I would purchase one. And if you end up not liking it,you can always sell it for almost what you bought it for.

Just go ahead and buy one!! You won't regret it!
The Nexus 4 will definitely last you for more than 3 years, software wise.
Its one of the snappiest and most responsive phones out there. The hardware will definitely be fine for another 3 years. The S4 Pro Quad + 2GB ram is very good IMHO.
If you don't like try GS4or hTC1 nexus exp.
(But i didn't see the pro of GS4,1 cuz its no touchwiz, sense like smart stay etc.so its just overpriced N4)(big.LITTLE? ummm just normal 4 cores)
When it comes to "should I wait for the new one to come out?", I usually advise people not to hang on for too long. If it were a week before they might announce the new one, let's say a week before I/O, I'd say wait that week to find out, but as far as waiting 6 months for the possible release of the new Nexus, I'd say don't hold your breath. The Nexus 4 will be a darn-good phone for 2-3 more years so don't worry about that.
Besides, I actually like to buy hardware after 6 months of release if I can wait. That way, they have time to iron out all the wrinkles, to make small revisions to the hardware that they found needed changing after release. You get a more solid phone if you wait for those changes. I got mine 2 months ago and it's a great phone.
Thanks for the responses everyone. I think I've made my mind up to buy one in the very near future. Again, thank you all very much!
I too use to own a HTC Sensation. The only reason i got the Sensation was because i had issues with LG G2x. Anyway i last year around may i got the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The nexus 4 is a different beast all by itself. Yes, get is and you will not regret it.
Hopefully my exchange will soon arrive and i will see what comes out Nov. Never buying a NON nexus unless google stops making nexus
You should of had one 6 months ago when I sold my sensation! get it now and enjoy life.
I actually sold my Sensation last year for a GN. Trust me, nexus is the way to go.
Got mine today. I'll never pick my Senny up again! I love this phone
