the power user's tools set

I'm new to this PPC biz (HP 100LX -> Treo180->Treo270->XdaII)
So now that I've played with my XDAii for two weeks,
I'd love to hear what other people use. This is my current setup:
1. MagicButton - this change the 'x' application hide into a real close
and show an actual bar (like winXP, but on top). It is free, small,
doesn't work too well with Phone Edition :-( but is much better
than Battery Pack 2004. There are many ways to do this...
2. cLaunch - allows setting up icons on the Today to run applications
directly (like a desktop on WinXP). Again - this is free and seems
better than Battery Pack 2004 (which combines too many features)
3. GPRS Monitor - by SPb. cute. works well.
4. TotalCommander - files manager. free, looks good, seems to have
no bugs, allow zip/unzip...
4. Multiie 3.0 - allows multiple windows, full screen, save pix, view
source in pocketIE. Also Macromedia Pocket flash 6 addon to IE.
5. WorldMate 2004 - gives world time, misc data for travelers,
and weather forcast. Promblems: won't update via GPRS,
doesn't show sunset/sunrise
6. In conjuction with WorldMAte, I'm also using Pocket Earth which
shows a neat earth display and gives sunset/rise/distance etc,
and citytime, which is much more practical but with less data...
7. PocketTV of course, to play mpg files
8. myipconfig, pocketping - simple network utilities
9. ruler, rangefinder - neat utilities
10. Calculator - the free Engineering calculator by Agang
Summary:
working the OS: MagicButton, cLaunch, TotalCommander
Internet Explorer: MultiIE, PocketFlash, GPRS monitor
multimedia: PocketTV
world time etc: Pocket Earth, WorldMate, Citytime
network utils: myipconfig, pocketping
misc: engineering calculator, ruler, rangefinder.
Still looking for: a good regeditor,
battery/memory/etc display like Battery Pack w/o the other gadets,
show all processes/threads/memory status utility,
maping tools for GPS and scanned maps,
impoved contacts (like Palm's search), calander (allowing change of
date when alarm turns on), phone (dial with one finger / big letters).
Please post what U are using!!!
A note to XDA I users: I'm sure if you all meet it will be clear most
of you learned, a year ago, which is the best RegEditor, File finder,
etc etc... but us newcomers don't want to download every little
software ever written and test it ourselves ... please guide us!
Application list
After purchasing several hundred's of dollars worth of Pocket PC applications / games, I have narrowed my most used down to the following.
Hudson Mobile - IP Dashboard
Journal Bar
Journal Bar Expansion Pack
Super Calendar
Print Pocket CE - allows printing of emails and documents to IR and network printers
Resco File Explorer
Resco Registry Editor
TomTom Navigator GPS
Handymenu
Games-
Bejeweled
Jawbreaker
Pac-Man
Pocket Conquest
Been testing and resetting my PDA and finally decided to have this few programs in my XDA II:-

1) HudsonMobile PhoneDashboard
2)Todayplus
3)Spb GPRS Monitor
4)Battery pack 2004
others :
5)Resco Explorer 2003

is that the panel or the program? so which one do you think is better? why?
AVC = Advanced Video Coding, which is h.264, which is the successor to ASP = Advanced Simple Profile, which is DivX/XviD/... Read the bible
Thus AVC movies are MP4 movies with AVC video content and HE-AAC audio content. Size of a movie is around 250-350mb with excellent quality on the X1's display I'll most likely open a thread somewhen and posting my findings on which settings work best with the X1. Already put hours into that...
G-Alarm is an application with G-Sensor support, it works without the sensor as well, it's not a necessity. The interface is "streched" though, the autor has to make it fit the WVGA screen first.

Name your most noticed person in this Xperia forum.
Ok just do it, and don't even ask. Name the user name (who actually owns an Xperia) that you
1) Notice the most
2) Disagree with the most
3) Admire the most
4) Notice the second most, and third most, and everyone else (in order)
and give a reason why.
1) Olrelsi; he's posting messages like fish or ants lay eggs
2) Olresi; love's his Xperia more than I, and gives it more attention than it deserves
3) Gtrab; he's got the American Roms; and he's even got other goodies that don't require the custom Roms
4) Spikegotti; when I see his avatar I always think if that is actually him and what the phone is he holding, and what country he is from Ethermind; I don't know, don't ask SoulaBoy; I hate Soulja Boy as an artist, and I wonder who in the world names his user name with that artists name That 1 chick with the Xperia but I forgot her username; she's the one with the display of her holding the TyTn II (correct me if I am wrong) and posing.

[Collection] Post your Software!

Hello guys! The idea behind this thread is to find good software (must-haves), so I'm asking everybody to post a list of their software and its uses (Short description + Weblink if it's hard to find). Please DO NOT post random software and DO NOT post software that you have not tested on your X1. Do NOT post software that can't handle WVGA (this is to say it appears smaller or requires WVGAFix). Thank you!
I'm gonna start:
-.NET Compact Framework (Runtime for many apps)
-Advanced Config (Lets you modify in-depth settings)
-Elecont Launcher (Launcher for Today screen with sliding capabilities)
-LockAndOff (Simple App that Locks the phone and suspends it)
-Flash Player 7 (Adds Flash-SUpport to PIE)
-Garmin Mobile XT (Navigation SW)
-Gravity Mobile MusicID (Identify songs by recording them)
-Monopoly Here ANd Now (The Game )
-Need For Speed Undercover (Racing game)
-NoData (Disable data connections for example when abroad)
-Panoramic Calc Pro (The BEST calculator available; with plotting, scientific calc currencies interests etc)
-Pocket Digital Clock (Digital Clock for Today screen)
-Pocket Uno (The game)
-PPCFinder (Find files on your PPC)
-Resco Audio Recorder (Record sound)
-Resco Explorer (BEST file explorer)
-Resco Photo Viewer Pro (View and "edit" pictures, slideshow etc).
-Retro (Analog clock for Today screen)
-Skype for Pocket PC (The name says it)
-SmsImport (Im- & Export SMS)
-Spacer (Whitespace Today plugin)
-Spb Finance (Keep track of your spendings)
-Spb Insight (RSS Reader)
-Spb Keyboard (Skinnable SIP)
-Spb Phone Suite (Show new msgs/missed calls on Today, automatic profiles, call firewall etc)
-Spb Pocket Plus (Tabbed launcher for Today screen, battery meter, more Hardware keys assignable)
-Spb Time (Stopwatch, Countdown, Worldtime etc)
-Spb Weather (Weather forecasts, also on Today screen)
-Spb Wireless Monitor (Keep track of your data volume used)
-Sprite Terminator (Anti-theft)
-Startmenu (Launches the startmenu )
-Teksoft Battery Meter App (Like VistaHide but doesn't consume so much power! Only 10% steps though)
-TorchButton (Controls the LED, you can use your phone as a torch, morse, or turn on disco light )
-VITO Technology RingtoneEditor (Cut your MP3s to ringtone-length)
Great post you have a few app's that sound nice, I personally like the Spb Insight and Rss Reader to keep me up to date on my favorite sites. I personally am going to google the flash player I didn't know that was out yet. Nice post again.
Wow..nice job! There is a similar thread but only top 5 apps. Keep moving! I will post my own tomorrow

The New Cab Collection [Updated 6/8/09]

This is the start of a regularly updated collection of Cabs. I have tested each one of these cabs myself on a T-Mobile Wing, WM6.5 ROM. All of them have tested to be working without the need for extensive hacking, 98 percent of them are one-click cab installations. I will provide instructions for the ones that are not. All of these cabs are free to use.
The listing of cabs is on the next post to conserve space for a larger list of cabs. Most cab files will have their own post with their own screen shots and descriptions. I will update the next post with links to each cab post. Cab files will be located on their respective posts or on my personal SkyDrive. This will eliminate waiting times on other file servers.
Recent Updates:
Update (6/8/2009): Opera Mobile has been updated to 9.7 Beta 1.
Update (6/5/2009): Added HTC MP3 Trimmer
Update (6/3/2009): Added MyMobileR Screen Recording App
Update (6/2/2009): Skyfire has been updated to 1.0
Questions, Comments, and Requests are Accepted and Appreciated
If you would like to post a cab. You can either PM me with the Cab and I will test it and take screenshots and add it to the post, with due credit of course. Or you can test it yourself and post screenshots. Please only post screenshots you have taken yourself. Also, I request that you follow the format of my current cab posts to the best of your ability. I will update the main list when needed.
All of the screenshots have been taken by me, and I have not taken any from other posts or websites.

AIM Mobile
AIM for Windows Mobile is possibly one of the most fully functioning AIM applications on the Windows Mobile platform. It's tabbed interface gives a person easy access to multiple conversations at once.
Some complains I have against the application:
The application can be a bit slow at times and sometimes unresponsive. The interface as appealing as it is to me, is not very touch friendly. Even with TouchFLO/WM 6.5 addons, it uses its own menu system, thus, they do not work together very well.
Also, Keep in mind that this app cannot use your SMS/MMS connection to connect. So you must use either WiFi or EDGE/GPRS to connect.

Great idea for a thread. I was actually working on collecting CABs over the last few days. I also made some of my own. We'll see how things go here and I might just post 'em.
Facebook
Version: 1.0.0.7
The new Facebook app is pretty cool. It is built for the WM6.5 platform, but works on 6.0/6.1 as well. The application is very finger-friendly to use, and it gives you a lot of tools at your fingertips.
My complaints:
I don't have too many of them... The app runs nicely, but where's the Facebook IM? I'll have to update this thread with the IM App because they didn't include it in this one.
Screenshots:
Google Maps
Google Maps
Version: 3.0.1.6
By far the best Mapping application for Windows Mobile. There's a lot of features I love about this application:
My Location: Finds your location within 100 meters using Cell Towers.
Search: Restaurant, Gas, Yellow Pages, etc. It will supply you with addresses and phone numbers. Calling is as easy as clicking a link.
Contact Lookup: If you have addresses listed in your contacts, it's very easy to look them up.
Street View: Look around the place right from your phone.
Traffic View: Shows traffic and routes to avoid it.
It is strongly suggested you consider purchasing a data plan if you plan to use this. Unfortunately, you cannot save or print driving directions.
Screenshots:
Opera Mini
Version: 4.2
Opera Mini is a really fast and light weight browser. It doesn't have the most fascinating or flashy interface in the world, and it is actually pretty simplistic. However, this helps a lot on the T-Mobile Wing.
I currently use two browsers on my Wing: Opera Mini 4.2 for the OnTheGo browsing. If I occasionally want to check XDA, or IMDB, or the news. I will use Opera Mini for the speed and rendering of pages on the EDGE connection. My second browser is SkyFire. If I need to see active content for whatever I'm doing. I'll use that. I have a link to it on the first post.
Screenshots:
Unfortunately, it wouldn't let me upload the CAB for some reason, so I zipped it. Just extract it and install the cab as usual.
Opera Mobile
Version: 9.7 Beta 1
I love the browsing style Opera puts into the Opera Mobile. The zooming is great and the features are great!
Some things I don't like:
It's not as fast as Opera Mini when it comes to surfing on EDGE. It consumes the Wing's memory so fast, as you can see from one of the screenshots.
Updates to 1.0:
-Server assisted Opera Turbo: I haven't seen any flash content as of yet, and it still is not quite as fast as Opera mini.
-Fixed some issues with custom software keyboards
Screenshots:
Unfortunately, this file was too large to put on XDA. You can download both 9.5B2 and 9.7B1 on via:
My SkyDrive.
Skyfire
Version: 1.0
I have to start by saying... The browsing experience on Skyfire is amazing. It's EXTREMELY fast. I have a feeling if I raced a 3G connection using EDGE on Skyfire I would beat it, but that's just postulating. Full Flash and Active Content, as seen in the screenshots of Youtube. It also plays any other flash content including music from Myspace. Unfortunately, Flash forms don't work, so Pandora is a no go.
Update: With the release of 1.0, the zooming and page surfing ease on EDGE has been better. So far the only downfall that I can see so far is the way that it hogs up phone memory.
Since Skyfire uses a server to compress the pages, which allows faster browsing and full flash, it also gives them the right to monitor what you go on when you surf the web. Not that I really care about that...
Screenshots:
T-Mobile OZ Communicator
Well... It's the stock IM application that comes with the Wing. I included this for two reasons:
1. People Always seem to ask for it.
2. It's one of the few IM clients that can use SMS and does NOT require a data plan (on T-Mobile).
It's a fairly light weight application, but it's also a little slow because it uses SMS and not a data connection. It only has one major IM protocol (AIM)... I say that because ICQ and Yahoo IM aren't very popular right now.
Screenshots:
Google YouTube
Version: 2.0.14
This is one of the most recent mobile applications coming from Google. It doesn't necessarily have as many features as the HTC Youtube application, but it is a pretty fast application. The browsing through videos has a sort of Cover-Flow approach to it. You can use your finger to browse through, or press the arrow buttons themselves. The application is pretty finger-friendly.
Screenshots:
HTC Album
Version: 2.5
This is possibly one of the best replacements to the Windows Mobile Photo software. It allows a full finger-friendly interface, and provides its own finger friendly menus. You can zoom, pan, etc. Just by using finger gestures.
This version is a bit different than the previous version it seems. It does not automatically go into Landscape when viewing photos, however landscape is still supported if you flip out your keyboard. I'm also not sure why, but videos do not seem to play in this version. I'll look around to see if I can find a better version, but until then here you go.
UPDATE: Those people running the newer versions of Manilla2D on their ROM may experience problems with this. I haven't been able to test this, so if you do, let me know.
Screenshots:
HTC Audio Manager
Version: 2.2
The audio manager floating around in these herald threads seems to be the older 1.* version. Well, it has been updated since then, and it now supports automatic syncing of Album art and Songs with Windows Media Player. It also supports Album Art in general, which is something that the previous version did not support. There's not a lot I can say about this... although I'm wondering why they chose to remove the volume button, you have to use the volume slider on the phone to control the volume.
After you install, you might have to add a shortcut to it to put it in your Programs list.
I would like to give credit to DumpyDooby for putting this together into one single cab.
UPDATE: Those people running the newer version of Manilla2D on their ROM may experience problems with this. I haven't been able to test this, so if you do, let me know.
Screenshots:
Pocket Last.FM
Last.FM is very similar to Pandora. Although, I can't say I like it as much as I do Pandora. Pandora is supposed to be coming out with a Windows Mobile version of its popular iPhone application, although myself and a lot of other people have reported a lot of glitches with this application. SO I bring you, the other option.
It is a very simple application, as you can see from the screenshots. It does not have a ton of flashy features, but if you just want to listen to music, it gets the job done nicely. It doesn't play too well over EDGE, so wherever you plan on using it, I would suggest using WiFi. Also this application requires the .NET Framework to be installed, so if you are running a cooked from, make sure you have it. If you aren't, install it.
Screenshots:
S2P (Slide2Play)
Version: 0.58
Software Developer: A_C
S2P was designed to give Windows Mobile users the iPhone/iPod touch experience when it comes to music applications. It supports Album Artwork and a CoverFlow interface. Unfortunately, it doesn't organize your music into Artist and Album for you. It just shows your File Folders where your music is located.
It works well with S2U2 (Slide2Unlock2).
S2V (Slide2View)
Version: 0.42
Software Developer: A_C
This application appears to provide a very simplistic way to organize photos on your mobile device. It doesn't appear to be able to play videos, although I didn't spend too much time testing this application. I did, however, notice that my images from my storage card weren't showing up. This might have been just a setting I didn't add to the application.
Screenshots:
Microsoft Office Mobile
Version: 2007
There's not a lot you can really say about Microsoft Office Mobile. It does its job. I know one of the most common complaints is that you cannot create files in the Powerpoint application, you can only view them.
I post this application because a lot of ROMs don't include Office anymore, and some people still need it. So here it is for easy access + Screenshots.
Screenshots:
Unfortunately, I was unable to upload this CAB to XDA, instead I uploaded it to my Windows Live Skydrive, just click Download on the page.
Download via SkyDrive
Hmm, thanks for that, but I just recognized that
the provided cab in post #14 is not the Audio Manager cab
but a second time the HTC Album 2.5
Could you provide the correct one for Audio Manager?
Olioaglio
Oh, I just realized that he gave me credit for that version of Audio Manager.
You can find that here: http://cleanimport.xda/index.php?threads/517894/
One caveat:
Both the Audio Manager and the Album versions that are in this thread come from IOLITE, which also contains an older version of Manila2D. In short, the Album and Audio Manager in this thread don't play well with the newest version of Manila2D (the one from Jade).
So if you're a Manila 2D user, don't use the Jade one until either the kinks are fixed or until newer versions of Audio Manager and Album are released. As it turns out, I think herg is already aware of the problems, since he says that he's going to be fixing the errors that everyone is having.

No problem Adamo. Download the file, copy and paste into your phone. After a click and install on your device. Simple as it should be...
Am I missing something?
This file is .zip, not .cab... When I copy to the phone and execute it opens as a zip file.
I tried to change the extension to .cab but no luck as well... I'm lost here...

It will download the .cab file so you just have to install it.
Or just download the cab file from here
Enjoy...

bobnaldo, YOU'RE THE MAN!
Great Idea Bobnaldo !
We should keep this thread alive and add more apps and games. I noticed you created an alphabetical order, may i suggest adding a few words describing each app, or arrange them by categories.
