Well it went and happened last night...
While getting out of a car, the belt clip release button got pressed in by my stab-proof vest that I wear for work (this is a design flaw in it's own right, in that any other belt clips like this I have seen, slot the handset 'down' into a channel, and not hang on a hook like the default XDA2 one does - this means that at least then, if the button release becomes pressed, it still needs the device to defy gravity before coming detached - with the XDA2 belt clip, as soon as the button is pressed, as it's just a hook, it falls off).
So my XDA fell just a couple of feet, if that, onto the ground. And even then, it had its standard leather cover on. But of course, the standard cover is less than cr*p, in that it leaves nearly all of the sides exposed!
And now I find I have a slight dent on the side of my previously impeccable XDA2. But worse, slight scuffing or scratching too.
And this is where my issue comes from. With any other device, a rough scratch could be polished out. But with the bl**DY stupid XDA2 material, this is the opposite, in that the normal finish is a brushed, fairly matt aluminium.
But if it gets even slightly scuffed, what actually happens is that it reveals the under layer, and produces in effect, a shiny polished scar. So polishing it is no use at all.
I have owned 28 mobile phones, blackberries, and various other devices in my time. And this is the first device I have ever owned, that has been scuffed beyond apparent easy repair. And worse, I have only owned it a month at most.
I am foaming about this - especially given the series of shortcomings with the device and cover/clip etc, that lead up to this.
But what I need to know now, given that my XDA2 works fine, is this:
Has anyone yet discovered a good way to 'get rid' off minor scratches or scuffs on the material of the XDA2, to cover the shiny material that gets exposed, and leave it with the same sort of brushed matt finish the it normally has, or any paints/primers/touch up cans, that match it?
Please help anyone!
I've attached a photo below, but it doesn't capture it too well, especially as what I HAVE done, is cover it all in lead pencil, then rub it in.
This has reduced a lot of the shine, but of course, this will soon polish off again, so I need a proper solution.
Not sure how to get the dent out, but just get another leather case, a better one than the free one in the box. That should cover the unsightly mark and you won't have to look at it any more. Either that or claim off the insurance if you have it, but then again they may not pay out for cosmetic damage

Only thing is though, you can see it all to well when its on the cradle, and I don't like it cased up too much (both issues of perception I know).
Additionally, I do have insurance, but it's an extension to Home Contents, so my premiums would jump up next year, they would not pay for cosmetic damage, and if I were to even consider a failed ROM upgrade death by pulling power half way through (and I wouldn't dream of that now would I?), then the problem is, the scratches would make it look like the (THEN) failed unit was caused by dropping it.
So I couldn't do a warranty claim, and would be back to the insurance one.
So, given that I can live with the minor dent, has anyone found any cure or solution for scratches, to cover it up back to the original finish of the XDA2?
There must be some solution, paint, primer, filler, or something out there?

This is funny... I have some scratches too (my XDAII I mean ) but underneath these scratches ale looming some dark material, nothing shiney at least.
I couldn't get rid of the scratches, but polite polishing removed the jagged edges so I won't cut my ear anymore while on the phone.
You could try going for a radical approach and give it a paint job.....either a can of spray silver/aluminium effect, or metallic or matt black - WOW. There are some great effect paints (although less is more in my view).
Use insulation tape (or masking tape) to cover off the screen, buttons, holes etc. You can use the covering as you see fit - you might want to leave some areas (top) silver.....
Hows about getting a dummy XDA II and swapping the cases over?

Dummy phones are usually proper phones without the internals, usually display models in shops. From my experience the ones in shops are the full casing, just without the inside.
Best thing to do is ask the seller what his is before you bid any money for it. Also ask the conditoin, as if its been mauled in a shop, it could be scratched as well
Ex-display shop ones also usually have some sort of anti-theft bolt through them, which might be less visually appealing than a little scratch on the side. :wink:

Yeah - that's the bit that worried me too...
I'll ask about.
Also, to remove the torx screws, means puncturing a Warranty Void label, which is a bit steep for a scratch.

Er no - I paid a mere £120 british pounds (around 150-170 USD?) for it on contract.
And more importantly, as I just put in one of my last posts, that would invalidate the warranty.
So if I HAD paid that much for it, there's no way I would invalidate the warranty for a few scratches.
They bother me a lot, for sure. But spray, or paint, is a bit different to invalidating the warranty on a one month old XDA2.

I noticed the first scratch on the corner of my Jam today. Since electronics always take the most abuse on the corners, I devised a quick and easy way to protect the corners of my Jam while I'm in Europe for the next 3 weeks. Take electrical tape or clear satin tape and place a piece over the corners. Works best if you cut a slit in the tape so you can fold it around the corner without wrinkles. In all probability the device will land on its corners if dropped or take the most abuse on the corners if scraped against something. Thus, problem solved; I did it to my digital camera too. It doesn't look half bad on either device, and if you can't stand the black corners, just use clear tape. Any tape works as long as the adhesive won't stick to the advice after you remove the tape.

I'm sorry, but that has to be the stupidest looking thing I've seen in a long time. Why don't you just get a silicon case for about $10 off of EBAY? I mean, if you REALLY need electrical tape and that's all you can find...great. But just get a cheap latex or silicon case such as the ones from JavoEdge.com.
Do you put electrical tape on the front and rear bumper of your car too?

I don't get it! People seem to get very upset when they discover they scratched the ball mirror on the back of their JAM. Now we have a JAM covered in electrical tape. Should we all carry our devices in the original box? Or better yet never use them to keep them in pristine condition? I am not saying I didn't get a little ticked off when I found a nice big scratch in the corner after a small drop but come on! I think we're all getting a bit too precious. Anyway, to each their own.
Of far more concern is the gunk that gets on the screen from my face every time I hold the JAM to my head! I mean yuck! What the heck is up with that? Is there that much oil on my face??? I just washed it! I gave my phone to my friend the other day to make a call and his face left some sort of super oil on the screen that wouldn't scrub off for several minutes! Its gross and embarassing! I think we need some sort of face oil protector!
Does anybody have any idea for cheap screen protection? I think the prices are outrageous for the slices of film sold as protectors.

scratch? i've droped my mini 2 times and got 3 dent edges. damn sad. The stupid casing they gave me is getting pretty loose. I put it on my belt.... so everytime i knock it seems that pouch just flings out. The screw and the plastic seems to have worn off.
I think i'm gonna go to a skinning shop to hide the dent edges.
try to buy a leather case for Nokia 7610. it fits.
You dont use that in the box lether case. It will easily fall of that tiny hook.
Wit the lether case of Nokia, it is mounted sideway into the belt by a leather that is sewed.
mine has never fallen. Even if it falls off the belt when you undress, the leather case is so stiff that it will not dent the mini.

Dropped mine on a concrete floor from about 1.5 meters and got a really ugly dent on one of the corners of the battery cover. The cover wouldn't even go back on!
Easy fixed though. Just took a plastic pen and pushed the dent out from the inside. It still shows a slight dent and small scratches if you look closely, but what the heck...
Anyone know of any metallic paint (model, SKU, UPC code) that I could use on my JAM? I rarely put on my seatbelt, and the one time that I decide to play safe, I scratch up the corner of my JAM. I'd never go "ghetto" as one person put it in the thread, but I'm sure there's something out there to match it up. Any ideas?
Get the jam off of your belt and put it in a proper car holder and you will not only protect it from getting scratches from your seatbelt, you will also get it charged while driving. And also one less reason not to wear a seatbelt that could save your life in the case of an accident.
Incidentally, can anyone recommend a decent car kit for the JAM? I want one I can mount with some amount of ease somewhere on the console... I don't like those ones that stick on the windscreen.

I want to get a case that will protect the fuze from drops. I drop my previous phone the 8525 twice and because I'm in a city the first drop was on one of those metal grates and the phones edges got scratched up more than I would have liked and the second time was on a concrete side walk. Both times I was pulling out my phone from my case on my hip and lost grip. I was interested in getting a case that I can pull my phone from the top. That may help prevent me losing grip. But I still want to put something on the phone incase I loss grip again and drop the phone. And I was looking for something that will not put that much bulk or take away from the looks of the phone. If anyone has any suggestions or experence with cases or skins that I can put on the phone to try and protect it from a drop I would like to read about it
I had the boxwave clear case for my 8525, and it saved my phone several times. There were a couple problems though. For starters, the gaps between the plastic and the phone get covered in dirt, and you have to remove the case to clean it out. The case snaps on to your phone will little plastic tabs. If one of those breaks, part of your case will be loose.
However, I will certainly give the case full marks for protecting my phone. It survived drops, throws, smashes, and just about everything else you can imagine would happen if a 1 year old got a hold of your phone. So, if you don't really care about the phone getting dirty and whatnot, the boxwave case provides some good protection while adding a minimal amount of bulk to the phone.
I had a case similar for my HTC Tilt and I loved it, it saved my phone several times too and it has a belt clip which I loved! Also if you get that case they have it on eBay for cheaper... I believe it was $9.99 or something like that, I was looking earlier today and saw it on there but I bought a Hot Pink Rubberized one instead. But I like the cases, of course it's your own personal preference though. Hope I'm not too late with the eBay info though lol. Here's my search link, there are a couple cases for it.

Search for the body glove case. It is rubberized, not the best looking of cases, but might protect it the best. I bought mine on ebay.
I bought the official AT&T 2-piece case for $29.99 (-30% FAN discount).
It fits, but tabs that hold it on make the phone seem like it's going to get stuck in a half open position.

HTC Touch Pro Case Protection
For those of you who have a Touch Pro and have the Sprint included HTC brand case, you probably have the same gripe about it as I do. There is very little protection to the side of the phone as the OEM case has several gaps in it. Also using the case for a few weeks, the velcro begins to lose its hold and the case may not shut properly. I have customized my case to fix these problems and would encourage others to do the same. Here is what you will need:
-Small elastic material (available at any craft store or Wal-Mart!)
-3M double sided tape
-Velcro strips
-5 minute epoxy (Wal-Mart)
Directions: Cut a piece of elastic the same length as the open portion of the side of the case. Cut out small pieces of double sided tape and apply to the black cross sections of the case. Apply the elastic and cut to size. For the the velcro fix on the front of the phone, cut a strip of the velcro and fit to size on the front of the case. Mix the 5 minute epoxy and apply to the back of the velcro strip you just cut. Apply the velcro to the case and allow to dry (apply pressure to ensure a tight fit). Enjoy your case!

Basicly, I put it on started noticing the top was putting pressure onto the screen I think. THe touch screen got extremely laggy, unresponsivess, and just seemed to go crazy. I'm going to try sanding it down on the inside but I think that just sucks.
On top of that the phone fell out of the back/belt clip half one night and caused a nice freakin dent in my phone and allowed the battery to flip out almost down a sewer.
Anyone care to give me a positive review so I don't just throw this thing out?
Also - is it possible to buy a new physical case to replace a scratched/dented case? Not the body glove I mean the actual phone casing.

I have this case and had the same problem. I have read that many others have had it too. Honestly I dont know why a company would put out a product like this. They all should be recalled, however me being me decided to just fix it by Taking a dremel tool and shaving some of the inside part of the screen protector off, making it put less pressure on the screen. It fixed it immediately. The case does a great job in protecting the phone, just a major flaw that can be fixed if you have the time and tools. If you dont, ***** to the company and get your money back and try something else.

Yes I could see that the inside casing was a bit rough so sanding should stop the problem - but seriously that's a major issue.
Have you found that it holds the phone well though? Because I'm very upset that my phone fell out of it once already but maybe it was an error on my part and it wasn't secure enough...
I've never had the phone fall out of the body glove case.
i mangled my body glove case.
someone bumped into me and the phone fell out of the case AGAIN.
i ripped it to shreds and left it on the side of the road to rot into plastic hell.
i dont recommend this product.
I returned mine. I had the exact same issues (screen and phone falling out). It also didn't attach properly on the top left corner, it was always bowed out. I don't recommend it either.

When all the way snapped on, mine pushed the top left corner so hard the entire screen would not respond to touch. Returned it.
My friend and i had the same issue. We just took it off messed around with it and put it back and it works fine, SOMETIMES it happens again but we just take it off and put it on.
Since there is not any other case that provides this type of protection we are keeping it. I rather my phone be safe than anything else.
I just ordered mine yesterday so I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival.
What exactly did you have to mod to get it to work? According to my readings, you just need to sand down the edges that connect with the screen right?
I may just buy the case and sand down what was mentioned. I like the design of the case..only one so far I really like.
I've been using one for about two weeks and am very happy with it. Had read about the screen pressure issue on other posts (searching helps folks), and scraped down the top corners before I put it on. Don't need a dremel tool or sandpaper. No problems, fits perfectly. The only warning is that it's a little dicey to take off once it's on -- it really fits snugly.
Yout're talking about the "sand texture" clip-on case, right? If so, yes, I bought the case too. The top cover was too tight and caused the screen issue people are mentioning. That was an easy fix by shaving down the edges that were pressing too hard (actually, I just cleaned off the coating from the plastic that was causing it... The bottom of the case however wouldn't fit at all. no matter what I tried, I couldn't get all of the clips to lock over the edges of the phone. I removed the felt lining and still had issues. I got around it by using thin double sided tape (for a temporary fix until I got a new case). I wouldn't trust the belt clip with the double stick tape though. I ordered the rubberized case on ebay and the fit is perfect. Just get that one. I sent an e-mail in to Body Glove and have had no response yet. We should all get our money back on these cases, or at least a redesigned bottom case that fits correctly. Right now it was just a complete waste of money. It's a shame, because I really liked the feel of the case.

That is the one I ordered, and the fit is perfect. The only thing I wish it had was the belt clip insert for the case included. I don't know where to find one, but I mostly keep it in my pocket anyway.
you guys want a good case that protects? check out the monaco aluminum case, it comes with a clear lens on it which I haven't removed but you could if you wanted quick access to the touchscreen. I work in the construction field and have yet to have it fall off my clip. I also dropped my tilt (when I used it) from about 8" off a ladder and it was perfectly fine. The aluminum case for the fuze isn't any more bulky than the body glove case either.

I've got one of these as well...and while it does protect the phone very well it will also lower your signal strength. I've had these type cases for the Wizard and Tilt and now the Fuze...whenever I'm in an area where the signal was a little iffy to begin with I WILL either drop the call or be unable to answer with the metal case. So, stay away from the aluminum ones if you go into lower coverage areas (and no...the slots they cut in the back to help improve the signal don't actually help.)
emobileinhand.com has teamed up with Amazon and they're selling the Seidio Innocase for $24.85 shipped. I added Priority shipping and the total was $26.85. I bought my first Innocase from them but I got wasted on St. Patricks Day and broke it. The phone is fine, thank God.
The Seidio Innocase is hands down, THE BEST case for the Kaiser. The holster (strongly recommended) really keeps the device safe.
Right now, I'm using my Boxwave as a backup. I like it, but the belt clip forces you to wear it with the screen facing out which could lead to damage.

I have this case and imo its overpriced crap. The thing rarely stays on all the way. It seems there's always a corner or something to press down on again to get it to stay on it.
If you want a nice case cheap, just buy a cheapy. I bought one off Amazon for less than $5 and it stays on all the time never have to worry about it at all. The only difference is the holster and finish. The Seido has a nicer feel to it due some coating they put on it. And the holster for the cheapy is one of those screw on job's.
But hey if you want to spend $20 on a coating for something that will fall off, go ahead its on sale!!

I've used it for 2 weeks now and it stays on, feels great on hand, and haven't found any peeling of the rubberized layer.
I used to put on PDAir Aluminium for my SE M600 and it also go roughed up. So you can imagine my usage habit and this Seidio performs beyond my expectation.
Yea, I dunno man, I never have had a problem with my Seidio. You just have to make sure you have it on correctly. The boxwave is a very close second though. I wish Boxwave had a holster similar to Seidio's.
The great thing about the Boxwave is that it has a "notch" for the reset hole so it's almost impossible to miss and end up messing up your USB port.

I don't know how someone could fit it on incorrectly. It only goes on one way and its pretty obvious which way that is.
My biggest problem w/the case is that if i slide that keyboard out it will knock off the bottom hinges.
IMO its not a secure case. Is it designed well as far as all the little notches and slots? Yes. Does it feel nice in your hand? Yes. Does it look nice? Yes. Is it worth more than $5? No.
Is this really much different to the 'crystal cases' that you can buy from the markets and crack after a week in your pocket?

Dont even think about buying this pathetic case. after much debate i bought this hoping it would protect my kaiser. i spent a week looking for the perfect case, went through everything i could find. i received the case, it snapped on easily, i hardly had an issue with the little hinges, the case lasted me a good 18 months. the rubberised outside is a nice touch, imo the phone doesnt look good with the case, but i stuck with it coz it protects your phone, right? well not quite. what the assholes at seidio dont tell you is that yeah they've rubberised the outside but done nothing inside the case. its plastic, which means after a couple of months you start to accumulate **** inbetween the case and the outside of the fone. ordinarily it might not be a problem, but if like me the fone spends most of its time in the back pocket, in bags etc then any grainy kind of crap between a plastic cover and a kaiser = ? you guessed it, major dents, scratches, gouges etc. i didnt check the phone for a good 3 months after i put the cover on, when i took it back off my phone looked like id rolled it down a hill and then threw it back up again. its ruined my kaiser and now i cant sell it on unless i buy another housing and put it on myself. it may be error on my part assuming that a protective case protects the outside of your fone, i dont know. this is my experience of this ****ty case, take it or leave. i think you'd be better off buying the cheapy crystal ones, coz then atleast you can see when your phone needs cleaning and you dont end up ruining it.

Dont even think about buying this pathetic case. after much debate i bought this hoping it would protect my kaiser. i spent a week looking for the perfect case, went through everything i could find. i received the case, it snapped on easily, i hardly had an issue with the little hinges, the case lasted me a good 18 months. the rubberised outside is a nice touch, imo the phone doesnt look good with the case, but i stuck with it coz it protects your phone, right? well not quite. what the assholes at seidio dont tell you is that yeah they've rubberised the outside but done nothing inside the case. its plastic, which means after a couple of months you start to accumulate **** inbetween the case and the outside of the fone. ordinarily it might not be a problem, but if like me the fone spends most of its time in the back pocket, in bags etc then any grainy kind of crap between a plastic cover and a kaiser = ? you guessed it, major dents, scratches, gouges etc. i didnt check the phone for a good 3 months after i put the cover on, when i took it back off my phone looked like id rolled it down a hill and then threw it back up again. its ruined my kaiser and now i cant sell it on unless i buy another housing and put it on myself. it may be error on my part assuming that a protective case protects the outside of your fone, i dont know. this is my experience of this ****ty case, take it or leave. i think you'd be better off buying the cheapy crystal ones, coz then atleast you can see when your phone needs cleaning and you dont end up ruining it.

I had a similar experience as paradoox, bought it, thought it looked crap but left it on to protect fone, few weeks later discovered one of the little little tabs holding the top half of the case on snapped so it wouldn't stay on.. this is when i found scratches and dents under the case too. imo ... the case is just too expensive for how it performs... better to go thu 3 cheapies i think..
It all depends on your usage and carry habit.
I carry my phone on a leather pouch on my belt, with the Seidio snuggly fit on it, so it won't slip whatsoever.
It does make sense that some grits, etc. will get under the case, but I just opened it up 1-2 weeks ago and found nothing. Remember, I live in Jakarta, taking public buses and lots of fumes, dust, etc. around the air.
Of course it has to be also counted that I rarely open my phone in public (dusty, windy area) mainly for security reasons. I don't flaunt my belongings. I worked in an office building, and the phone is often out, but it's a clean environment.
Again, YMMV. For someone who wants no dust, I read somewhere there's a waterproof case for Kaiser ..
For my use, Seidio works great.
