Hi, when using programs like windows live messenger I've noticed that if I'm connected and running the program in the background and don't access the phone for about 10-15 minutes the connection is lost This happens with other messenger programs too like ebuddy.
I think it's the data connection automatically turning off but can't find any settings for this. I don't think it's to do with power settings as i have my phone set to auto turn off after 1 minute but the messenger can stay connected for a lot longer than 1 minute without any phone activity.
I'd like to run Live messenger in the background and have it connected all the time. Does anyone know how to do this or what settings i need to change?
Thanks.

one option u can do is set your email to be checked every 15 mintues or so, or even weather. that way the connection is always refreshed and even if your disconnected you can get reconencted quicker.
if you are using your live id email at your phone there is an option for the email push at arrival. with this setting there is always data on (works fine but takes much of the battery)

Yeah i have it set as that but for some reason Live messenger always disconnects after i have the phone idle for over 15 mins. When i access the phone again it says refreshing contact list and basically signs me back in. Could it be a setting for Live messenger to disconnect after a period of phone inactivity?

I think you`ll have to not let go the device to standby in the energy-settings advanced for this to get worked.

Hello,
I just migrated from a 8125 to the 8525. One of the first things I did was upgrade to the latest (official) ATTWM5 Rom.
Something that the 8525 is doing that the 8125 did not do is staying asleep. From time to time when I put the phone (or it goes) into standby mode the phone will wakeup, and the screen comes back on.
Sometimes it does it when I get new a new message, otherwise it wakes back up for no apparent reason.
Is this a known bug or an isolated issue?
Thanks

It may be the Active Sync auto connecting (or trying to) problem. If you do not use direct push e-mail then you could try the fake server procedure here:

Thanks for the reply Mike.
But the thing is, Active Sync always ran on my Wizard (8125) when the phone was in standby/sleep mode. Even upon getting a message on the Wizard the phone would beep, and or vibrate but it would not wake up (come on).
I had a total of 2 8125's and both behaved the same way.
This being my first 8525 I can't compare this behavior to another.
I've also basically have the 8525 setup the same as my 8125 with much of the same programs installed.
BigTex.
mine is doing the same too. I format the whole phone and didn't install any applications just in case they wanna sync or something and yet still the screen doesn't wanna go to sleep. Keep on coming up every 15 mins or so which is very annoying and wasting my battery. I will try to sync thing and hope it fixes my problem.
My TYTN also does it... but it is so rare (less than once a month) I
haven't searched for a solution.
I have read that it might be caused by the ir port: the default
functionality is to accept incoming connections (in Settings > Connections
> Beam > accept all incoming beams). Light falling on the ir window
might trigger the device into thinking there is ir activity. If
this is the case, disabling this function might be a solution...
Jörg
my ir is turned off. so it can't be the problem. Plus I found out that if i don't accept all incoming beams, even if somebody else wanna send me something through bluetooth, my phone doesn't accept anything. So I have to turn on that feature to accept from bluetooth. I think it's weird.

Took a look at the settings on the IR port and it is off (not checked).
BigTex.
Try setting Active Sync to manual otherwise it will run by itself (unseen) in the background.
The person who posted above with a very regular switch on every 15 mins sounds more like a push mail setting.

But what I am saying is I shouldn't have to do that. On my 8125 Active Sync was set to sync "As items arrive" during peak times. Just like on the 8525.
I set the AS to only sync manually at night (11p-7a) and best I can tell it doesn't wake up. So I concur it is something to do with AS but why is the 8525 behaving differently then the 8125? I know it's a different phone, but both are running the same OS (WM5).
ok. i tried that activesync to manual and then my phone is still turning on the screen by itself. It's very annoying. Now I don't have any applications at all. Active sync is set to manual already. no 3G is connected. what else can I do? should I just reflash the firmware again?

Do you have email account set up 8525?
One of the option while setting email is to check email at every 5 minutes. if this is check (if you have email) then uncheck and see if that solved the problem.

The only email account I have on the phone is my Active Sync Exchange account that's been discussed earlier in the thread.
One thing I observed today. I still have my AS set to sync as items arrive and while I'm still having the issue, it doesn't seem to "wake up" every time.
Strange.
My 8525 does this too. I just set the profiles so that when the phone is off charger, the screen shuts off in 1 minute. For the nightime I set the screen to shut off in 30 seconds.
In the car (the car profile) it is set for 2 minutes.
That way this turning on uses as little battery as possible. i live in Providence, RI and think this might have something to do with switching from 3G to Edge - based on which signal is stronger.
OH! Yeah! You have to get phonealarm from PocketMax to do the profiles thing
see before i upgraded the firmware, i dont have that problem. so now i just took a chance and upgraded to WM6. no more screen problem.

Hi all,
every our my wifi turns on automatically and downloads my emails... nice one, but i don't know why and actually would like to stop it to save the battery...
I think it's something with the schedule option from activesync...
anyone have the same problem?
Well I was playing with the phone yesterday setting up emails. In your settings for email, there should be one that dictates how often the phone picks up email. Now, mine does it through the GPRS data plan, and I'm not sure why yours does it through wifi.
But there is an option for getting emails every few mins to every hour to every 4 hours to once a day.
So dig a bit in the email accounts and click things that look like 'settings' or 'options' or 'advanced' and you'll find the drop down box that have these options.
First off, i LOVE this phone. The screen is beyond amazing, the phone is super responsive and i cant put it down. GPS...well...yeah, havent fully tested it yet but GPSTest wont even lock a single sat (that will be my next post.)
Now the first thing i want to setup is email syncing and such.
First, what is the best email client? I use only gmail and have 2 accounts.
I would like to setup a profile or something like that so my 3g turns on every 1/2 hour or hour for a minute and my email will sync up during that time. This is for when im away from home/a charger. I have UltimateJuice/JuiceDefender right now, can i use this to do what i want?
Other times, like at home, i use wifi and want my email to sync every 1/2 hour or hour, and keep wifi on at all times.
Thanks,
Brad

did you test the GPS indoor or outdoor?
it should have got satellites in the first 5 sec, then within 10 sec you should have at least 1 lock.
average in 20~30sec max you should be up and running.

Settings Profiles from the Market will do the scheduling for you quite nicely.
Though honestly, Gmail syncing via Push uses very little juice, so there's no reason to turn Sync on or off for that account. It's **** like POP mail and Facebook you want to keep an eye on, not Gmail.

No GPS settings changes either?
Kies shows im on JG9, is that the newest? I ran the built in GPS via the Samsung Code...i could not get a lock on a single sattelite in 5 minutes, both outside and inside. Makes me think the GPS isnt actually working at all on my phone. I see the gps status blinking on the top notification bar but no sat locks on GPS Test or the Built-in test.

I don't keep up with it, but most country carriers haven't released a new firmware yet, so I'll assume you are in that boat. Check your settings in the location & security menu. Try to play around with the combinations for the 3 check boxes and see if you can get one to give you the results you want. For whatever reason, in GPS Test I get abysmal results if I leave just about any box unchecked, but my realworld performance isn't so bad regardless of which one I check...I've started to lose a bit of faith in the GPS test in the past 2 days. But it might be my lastest firmware that caused the issue.
Hi guys, I have setup my corporate Exchange mailbox using the built in application.
However, it works VERY poorly (settings set to Push) - sometimes the widget (or alerts for that matter) wont display new mail for HOURS! Until I manually go into the Mail application, and a minute later suddenly I get all the emails, and 4 emails I've been trying to 'share' (Notes) have been all sent at once.
Any idea how to fix this? or what to use instead?
On my old Dell Streak, using the default program, I had instant alerts on emails! sometimes even before Outlook had a popup!
this is annoying to no end..
I'm not sure if you're organization sets device security, but mine required a passcode to be set on my device if I used my Exchange account. For whatever reason I was still able to use the pattern lock but I noticed the same delays that you did. On a whim I set it to a numeric lock and all of a sudden my mail decided to push properly.

ok well, I tried this - 10 mins ago someone sent email (I see it on outlook already) - yet nothing on the Note (I switched to numeric lock hours ago), so must be something else... any ideas?
wifi is connected, and gmail is getting updates without issues.
I have this problem, too, and I've seen several others post about it as well. It's quite frustrating. Sometimes it works instantly and sometimes it'll go a couple hours without sending/receiving. Some people think it's a push bug and say changing to polling fixes it, but it didn't for me. I set it to 15 minutes and I still get the same problem with delays. It's really frustrating. I'm going to see if it's an app issue by installing another email client such as K9 or Touchdown.
Also, I wonder if it's a connectivity problem; I've been having weird issues; I work from home a lot so I'm here a lot in my wifi, and it seems sometimes my phone won't use the cellular network. I turn my phone off, it goes into deep sleep and turns wifi off, then I won't get any emails until something else wakes my phone, turning wifi back on. Like the email client can't or won't wake the phone when needed. I'm going to start a post about this tomorrow.

My wifi also disconnects sometimes if the phone is idle I don't know why.
That happens at home, it does not switch to 3G as I don't have any 3G plan atm at all (and its disabled in settings anyway).
However the mail push issue is prevalent even when I use the phone and its active - mails still don't arrive! even if I click refresh on the widget itself, no new mails until I launch the Mail application!
Ok well, this has gotten worse.
My limit is when I show up for a meeting only to find out 15 mins ago a postpone email was sent.
I've mailed Samsung support, hopefully will get an answer to resolve the issue - will update when I hear something back.
Anyone else experiences the same problem? please post here...
Also anyone who solved it
I had the same issue as well,So i deleted my Exchange account started all over again from scratch,on the set up i chose all the options I needed, now it works as it should,so what I have noticed:
1-After the setup is complete,if you go to the Account Settings and start to fiddle with the settings that seems to upset the push funtion ,except changing the notification sound didnt do any harm.
2-When I assign my custom Notification tone it also seems to upset the Push funtionality(but I am not 100% sure of this one yet.)
So I've been having problems with push notifications (whatsapp, gmail) for a looong time now and it really pisses me off like f&*k. I mean, if I want an "instant" messenger, I don't want to receive my messages after 2 hours or when I wake my phone up, right ?
I switched ROMs countless times, same thing with kernels and all I can say is that the push notifications work perfectly ONLY on stock kernel+ROM (as from my experience). But what if I don't want to stay on 2.1 and receive my messages instantly ?
I've done some research on google for CM and push notifications and it appears that I'm not the only one having this problem. People say that there's an issue with mobile internet connection (I don't experience problems on WiFi) and it feels like it "refreshes" from time to time instead of staying connected. So what's the case here ? I'm desperate to have it fixed, but after weeks of research, all I found is that people on stock ROMs don't experience this s#it...
In many roms, To save battery the internet connection refreshes, so u just have to remove that setting, Ask it to the developer of the respective rom how to do it

Thank you for your answer. I hope it helps with my push notifications issue, because I get this with literally every messanger (Whatsapp, Talk, Viber, GMail). Screw the battery life, I want to stay connected instead of getting a 2 hour delay between messages

Lots of ROMs, lots of kernels, no task killer, no additional apps and it still disconnects after 5 minutes of the phone being idle. Then when I wake the phone up and go to Whatsapp for example, it takes a while to connect again (nothing shows in place of "Last seen"). In some cases I need to manually turn data transfer off and on again to make it work. Same with Viber, Google Talk, GMail. I eventually receive my messages after some random amount of time. Sometimes it's 5 minute delay, sometimes it's 2 hours.

I think you missunderstood me
I have no problems on WiFi. I have problems with push notifications in general. My data transfer won't stay connected full-time. It goes to sleep after I stop using my phone for a while, then it reconnects when I wake the phone up (sometimes I have to reconnect it manually), so the problem isn't with certain application, but with the phone in general.
Best regards
Solution
cyanogenmod turns off wi-fi when the phone is idle so you should download an app for that from the play store, like advanced wi-fi lock for example, to be able to keep it on. Hope i helped
But anyways i think that if the signal is low and the phone disconnects from the wireless network it wont connect again, so you will have to connect it manually again.
I just changed my provider to T-Mobile and it seems like the problem is gone. Why ? I don't know. I hope it's not just temporary and I won't come back here in a few days, complaining even more.
Regards
Yep, almost 2 days and it's working like a charm. If you have any problems with push notifications on CM, it's probably your provider screwing you over
Mod please close the thread
I don think its provider's problem. Why will they block the push notification?
I started experiencing this when I moved over to ICS.
hmm I don't know about ICS but on CM7 I don't have that problem. I have gmail, hotmail, whatsapp and viber apps, all with push notifications working fine... don't know why push notifications wouldn't work on ICS, in my opinion it's your providers fault if you try to push notifications using 3g or 2g data and they came delayed.
ps: I'm using miniCM7.
[edit: uh.. wrong threat]
is there a way of getting push notifications without google-apps?
