Ran out of memory already? - XPERIA X1 General

Hi All,
This is my second day with the phone, and i've already ran out of memory.
I have installed facebook panel and slideshow panel and google maps. That's all.
I've sent a couple of emails and received a few texts.
My stats show:
Storage:
Total 283.20 MB
In Use 283.20 MB
Free 0.00 MB
Program:
Total 200.48
In Use 74.82
Free 125.66
Any idea how I can free up some room?

Have you been browsing alot? If so clear out your cache.

Yes, i've been browsing a lot. Mainly facebook in the evenings. I've cleared out the Opera and IE cache... still maxed out though...

Also, there is 24MB (approx) worth of music installed in the stock rom. see my documents\my music

thanks for the reply. I will make sure i delete it all!
Also, do i need to regularly delete text messages to ensure i save space?

Text messges take up next to nothing unless you have thousands?
I really don't know why you have so much mem taken up on your handset. I have the same installed as you along with TomTom, G-Alarm, Finger Keyboard 2 etc and I have about 103 Mb free. There must be something going wrong somewhere. Do you have all pics and movies shot with the cam getting stored on the MicroSD? Is something installed on your MicroSD saving on your internal memory maybe?

Vids
I don't know about you but on my Voda UK Xperia there was almost 50MB of vids too on the internal memory, (A James Bond trailer and some jazz vids) I got rid of those. Removed the crappy music that was on there, deleted some of the images in the pictures folder.
Even after over a month and with all my apps installed to the internal memory, blackstone volume, taskmanager, mp3trimmer, dialer and even some custom mp3 ringtones, I STILL have 139.20MB free.
Edit: P.S. and you storage is actually a bit larger than mine: Mine only registers at 277.85MB total. My program memory is hte same though, 200.48Mb.

wow, max out the phone storage~

Well, it's sorted. I restarted the phone, which took it down by 1mb or so which gave me enough memory to start clicking programs.
I think it is because I went to the youtube website and it started buffering a video via the 3G connection (that is when the problem started).
I deleted all the temp internet files and it's corrected itself now (i hope).

Install stuff on the memory card, perhaps? Leave the faster internal mem for cache stuff hehe

Have a 2 gig card now - but still get memory low messages

What can I delete, or shift to the card?
Pics and music are on it already now.
Thanks in advance
hard reset and don't install stuff on phone unless vital!
That's right.
Hard reset is recommended.
But for now you can uninstall some of your large apps (see your activesync) and then reinstall them, pointing to your SD card.
Wizardragon -- What actually is the problem you are getting?? If you have installed lots of programs on your device rather than the SD Card then of course you will get low memory messages sooner or later - however I am sure you haven't put a post here for something as obvious as that.
Can you do a SOFT reset and then immediatley go and look and see what memory you have - Both types. Post the results and then we can see what the issue is.
Thanks
The problem was caused by the camera software changing back to storing on the phone and loads of surfing while I was on holiday - but I scrubbed as many programs as I could - cleared the net cache - and copied the (few) pics over- and it is now showing 15M storage and 20M program storage free.
So basically now I'd like an idea if this is about right for free resources?
I have mine around 30Mb for storage and 25Mb for programs. I still have plenty of apps installed but mostly on my storage card.
Do you have any games (apart from the builtin solataire etc) installed in main memory? They can usually take up a least a few meg unless they're basic games with no fancy graphics.
its going OK now - with the exception of the camera software being crap.
I only have the standard games now.

low storage memory??

all of the sudden i am getting warnings about low storage memory. i recently checked and only have 6.52mb free. how can i free up some space. the only programs i have installed are AIM, weatherpanel and newspanel. everything else is on my 1 GB card. any help?
Look for email attachments, SMS messages, pictures and videos from the camera (I set mine to use the SD card, but it keeps reverting to main memory), web browser cache.... I have found that all of these use space on the quiet.

yea i deleted 550 text messages yesterday but it didnt free up much. all my temporary intnernet files are on my card along with my pics. this is really weird
Ok, if I check the size of the directories, I get....
Application Data 2Mb
Documents and Settings 1Mb
My Documents 1.5Mb
Program Files 9.5Mb
Windows 81Mb
Connmgr and temp use 10kb between them.
And there is 1.16Mb in loose files.
I have 7.66Mb free, 34.89 used
I have total storage of 42.55Mb. The windows directory alledgedly takes up 40% of this (17Mb) as there is 64Mb reserved for the OS.
17Mb + 9.5Mb + 1.5Mb + 1Mb + 2Mb +1.1Mb = 32Mb which gives a 3Mb error (which admittedly could be a rounding error or hidden files that are still hidden despite all files being shown). If I total it all up it's 95.9Mb, 100557463 bytes and equates to 34Mb of memory used. I get the sneaking suspicion that WM5 is making the numbers up.
hmm.. i just opend PIE and deleted all temp internet files. and it cleared up 22mb. i guess not all the files were stored on the memory card. thanks for the tip

I just tried it, cleared up 3.7Mb. Wouldn't mind, but I don't even use PIE (I use Opera).

internet cache to sd card?? must have...

I can't believe no1 has mentioned this...at least not to my knowledge...as I browse throughxda and android forums. Internal storage is under 60 mgs for me and the browser eats it up real quick up 2 20 or 30 mgs...I def would likke 2 see that option...

I'm second to this notion. It's rediculuous that the browser cache (usually the largest) is not stored in the microSD card.

Ummm what are you talking about? Maybe you have too many programs on your phone because I can use the browser just fine and have had over 600 messages on my phone... even some MMS messages.

Same here not showing any memory issues with the phone and have a lot of txt messages and MMS as well as quite a few programs installed.
It's not about a memory issue. The fact is HTC/T-mobile/Google made a stupid mistake by not giving this phone larger internal storage. Earlier today I had my phone slow on me because the browser cache had taken up all of the internal mem, I had to install a few apps just to reopen the browser so I could clear the cache. The fact that they KNEW the phone only had 60megs (which is sad on a phone of this calibre) for internal storage, and didn't make it so all storage of all kind was immediately transferred to the SD card is just annoying. This phone was like 5 to 10 OBVIOUS moves from being a damn near perfect phone Imagine the G1...as is...plus:
- 3.5mm jack ON TOP.
- Mini USB port moved to the side or top as not to impede typing while charging.
- 4-8GBs of internal storage..or even 2GBs
- Virtual keypad for quick typing with one hand.
- File Manager
- Complete video player with multiple codec support (Seriously, no AVI? WMV? even MOV?)
- constantly active accelerometer
- True IM on par with the IM client on the SK or better.
- and a personal nitpick...sliding finger across photos to swith from photo to photo.
with just those fixes...though there are indeed other 'issues' with the phone, but if those were implemented in the final design...we'd have a true iPhone killer (I think Android ****s on OSX, but the G1 < iPhone.
... I have yet to have any real issues. I had a message come up once because I installed every app in the market and it just said I had 10% storage left. I see no problem with the 60meg storage for now as I am sure in the future it will let us use internal storage.
As for the headphone jack... give it up this isn't an MP3 player it is a phone. If I wanted an MP3 player I would have bought a creative zen... oh wait I did.
Virtual keyboard is in the work... same with a video recorder/player... wow who would have thought. At which time I am sure the file manager will be coming out also.
So far this isn't even a final design... hence the RC in our versions. This is a release candidate... meaning "hey we need to work on it some more but it is good enough to release and get your opinions on what needs work" This phone is basically for developers and advanced users right now so that we can get our hands on it and figure out what we need to make.
I don't know what ya see on ur phones but when I first got my phone ad put about 2 or 3 new apps on it I still had 71 mb free of internal storage memory,it's about 30 below that now because of all the apps and games I downloaded but I still don't see any problems with my phone slowing down. For the internet cache what helped me a little was going into settings/manage apps/browser I realised that there was 8 mbs being taken up by data so I cleared the data and got 8 mbs back in internal storage memory free and didn't mess up my browser in any way, hopes this helps ya.
I have over 25 app installed on my g1 and my memory is at 58mgs ...the problem is that I dnt want to have to clear my browser history ever single time I use the internet...ya kno? I think internet cache to sd would be a big plus to this phone..thinkkabout it...u can surf for hours without worring about ne low mem msgs popping up....I honestly can see y ne1 would be against this

I don't think we are against this. We are just wondering where you get the 60 msg limit from. Yes I would love to see that option but it looks as thou none of us have the msg limit you have. I can live without the cache being on the card for now. Especially since I can browse for hours without it telling me my memory is full... and like I said I have over 500 messages in my inbox. It is the same way cache is stored on your computer at home (thinking FF not IE) once you use up your limit (8MB on the g1 I believe) it just deletes things in the cache to give you more space. If it didn't you wouldn't be able to go much further than 1 or 2 graphic intense sites.

first of all lets get this straight
mgs = megs = megabytes
msg = messages
the phone has 60 megabytes of internal memory when you install apps they are saved on the internal memory when you use youtube and browse the internet the cache is saved on the internal memory
cookzitall is not saying anything about messages hes talking about memory
right not i have about 40mb of memory left if i browse the web and use youtube it can go down to 10-20mb this slows down the phone
if we could save cache to sdcard you could have cache without slowing your phone

awww that is where we got confused. I didn't know mgs was megabytes since we us MB for that. msg is a common shortcut for message. With the biggest App being 4MB I don't see that big of an issue. And if you limit your cache correctly you shouldn't have issues either.

Yea thanx for clearing that up haitiankid...
This is really becoming a problem...especially with the market expanding to as big as 8 MB(mgs) lol ... I have a total of 24 apps installed with only 4 that r over a mg and my mem is at 53 MB....that's comparable to my wing..which is sad bc this phone shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the wing...just hitting a few forums on xda brings my mem down to 46 MB..and that's just me browsing the dream pages....that to me is insifficant...
I also noticed that there is a slight mem leaking happening...or maybe sum settings r stealing the memory but its unlikely....when I hardreset my phone and install all my apps my mem is at 57 MB....4MB more than the previous 53 that I was showing....maybe sum1 can relate or explain....
yeah the internet cache clearing is a issue, and yes the device should have more internal memory, and yes it should have internet cache on the storage card
if you go to settings -> applications -> manage applications
you can see how much storage all of your storage your programs use. even though you download an app thats about 500kb it takes up more space because apps save user data (even though its not much, it still adds up)
for example if you download one og the notepad apps off of the market thats about 50kb but depending on how many notes you store it can go from 50 to 100kb but thats not much
most of the storage is used for cache for apps that came with the phone like the browser, maps and youtube.

And which memory because you are talking about installing apps when that has nothing directly to do with operating memory.
Installing on mem card doesn't "save" anything in this regard.
I'm also low on Storage-mem on the phone - even though I install programs on the memorycard whenever possible (and of course put my pictures, music and videos on the mem-card as well!).
I have 177mb free Program-memory on the phone but only 9.3mb storage-mem.
This makes programs such as the YouTube-app very unhappy as it seems to only be able to cache to internal storage-memory :-(
On older versions of WM you could change how the phone used it's internal memory with a slider in settings.
The phone also seemed to adjust this automatically as it became necessary.
Now however it seems that this possibility is gone (both manual and automatic adjustment).
I hope it is only my ignorance speaking so here's hoping that someone has a solution to this problem (fingers crossed)

If you have used up storage mem then that's it but what have you installed to use it.
Mine shows 152Mb storage and 252Mb program memory free. 27 apps installed and everything running fine.
Do you install a lot of application from the Marketplace? If so, this defaults to install on internal memory
I have exactly the same issue, and it's very frustrating. Pretty crazy really as I can't use the phone for anything that uses device storage. No youtube, no media busy web pages and some apps refuse to run smoothly, or at all.
Like you, I'm always having to delete Opera & IE's cache files just to keep the phone functioning! I've also deleted all my Co-Pilot files on the card and the device - this helped a little and gave me another 5 or 6 MB of device space.
With all cache's cleared and around 30 programs installed (all on the card) I now only have 7.8MB of free device storage, which disappears within a few minutes when using Opera.
Out of the 336MB of program storage I have filled 153MB with 182MB free - I wish I could control how much memory is allocated to the program memory and device memory.
Very strange...I have any large applications like games, copliot etc installed on my SD card, only small apps on my internal memory...
Total storage: 200.15MB
Used storage: 119.99MB
Free storage: 80.16MB
Total program: 336.93MB
Used program: 170.54MB
Free profram: 166.89MB
i have a 16 meg Ram Disk (see the 'ram disk' thread ) and my system temp folders and caches, plus opera cache have been moved to it. Opera now runs really fast, and the cache is no longer taking up the storage memory, plus when you soft reset it clears out the cache too.

Wow thats so confusing!
Just tell us
Storage memory (where the apps are installed)
Program memory (where the apps and OS run)
You should have plenty of mem to install ail your apps and run them without a problem.
Try installing them all to phone because you have enough mem

I have since day 1 installed all my programs to the memory card apart from a couple of programs and hotfixes which I though would be smarter if I installed to the device - but these are tiny. I have also set my marketplace to default to the memory card and removed all co-pilot files and set all podcasts to the microSD too.
Total Storage: 200.27
Used Storage: 191.48
Free Storage: 8.79 (whohooo, that's much bigger than normal!)

Free Program: 192.93
SD Card: Over 2GB's free
I really have no idea what's using all my internal storage.
Yep - that's about the same for me.
Only a few apps are installed directly on the phone (the ones that install without letting the user decide where they want them) so what's hogging my phone-storage is beyond me...
But I really don't need close to 200 mb of program-memory, is there really no way to use some of this memory for storage - as was possible with earlier versions of WM?
Have you tried importing to PC, such as pictures and other things, using Windows Mobile Centre?

I can't help but think that you've missed the point - when the storage memory is full the phone ceases to function properly!
It uses this area of storage for the cache files for the browser and for applications such as you tube. When I start the youtube app, if it opens at all, it will say 'Critically low on system memory...etc' and shut down after playing a few seconds. If I have many tabs open in opera the same memory problem occurs.
The 'Device Storage' partition is full (with what I don't know) whilst the 'Device Program' partition is almost empty. We have no control over what sizes those partitions are. Maybe i've got it all wrong but either way it's really limiting the usefulness of the phone.

yes there is. as I mentioned in post 9, I use a ram disk for my temp files and cache. lives in program memory but shows up as a (fast) memory card.
search for the ram disk thread.
also, as regards figuring out what is taking up all the space, use a file manager (don't forget to unhide all files) and search for everything over....say....1 meg.

No I haven't missed the point, I just don't get the problem and I'm trying to figure out why not?
And that would help you. Something is causing certain phones to behave this way. I use youtube and opera and never have to clear out anything.
I currently have 36 apps showing on my start menu screen and memory is showing as Storage 152.13 Mb free and program 313.80 Mb free.
I run Titanium (not manilla UI) and I have LeoLite ROM installed.
Something in that setup is causing the phone to respond differently!

Very little Device Memory HD2. (What? Already!!!)

I've had my HD2 for about a week now. I've installed maybe 3 or 4 apps directly to the device (not to SD Card). I'm now in the situation of not being able to d/l any videos etc. due to having insufficient memory! I can't believe it!!!
Device total storage stands at 200.40MB
Used storage= 189.02MB
Free storage= 11.38MB
However below this info my phone is showing ''Free program storage'' as being 178.38MB. While my SD card is showing Free Memory being at 1453.95MB.
Would the solution be to transfer everything to SD card and only install to the SD card in future?
Yep I would, saves the phones internal memory
I install any non-system apps to the card, anything that needs access to the system files goes on my phone

These reports of low memory are really starting to bug me.
It would appear that there is something going on that is not fully understand because there is no way that you should run out of phone storage memory with only 4 apps installed!
A serious in depth investigation is needed to unearth the cause.
I have 27 apps installed and I have 152Mb of storage memory left.
Could you tell us what ROM you are running?
Did you go to the task manager and see what is running and try ending the tasks? If you don't kill programs in there they will eat up your system memory... Specially if you are downloading a bunch of porn... Opera is probably using up a bunch.

Thats not the memory the OP was talking about. Unless I've got it all wrong! Or you have!
I think you are referring to Program memory. The OP was talking about Storage memory and how something was using it up.
This is all very strange.
Things you should definitely look at
1. Where are your camera pictures and camcorder videos stored? ---> if you select device and not storage on the camera app or camcorder app settings, then u are my friend putting pictures and videos you've taken to the sdcard...
solutions: go to ur camera app settings and look at where u are storing the pictures...
or go to ur file explorer, go to ur device's memory and check if they are there...
if they are there, then copy and paste them to ur sd card...
2. set ur outlook, yahoo e-mail and stuff to be stored in sd card, not device's memory...
3. idk what else you have in there to have that very little memory left...
Oh I missed that... My phone has 686.12 Total Storage, 190.64 used, 495.48 free. I have installed all of the apps on the Storage card though. If his says that the total storage is 200 or whatever, that sounds like the problem... Should be like a gb of total device memory between storage and programs...
It seems that Opera 9 saves downloads to a folder on the phones 'device memory', but it doesn't always delete them when you tell opera to do so in the downloads menu tab.
It saves them too: \My Device\Windows\opera9\profile\download
When I deleated most of the files there it released over 110 MB of space in the device storage.
I wonder where other programs save similar files?
Sam.
Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638 for tips on freeing some space. The HTC Album cache is my biggest storage hog. Even then, like you, I have just a few programs installed to my internal store and hardly any memory left. The UK version has less storage than the USA HD2 which makes matters worse.
maybe for the euro hd2, cleartemp could help. It can help find those caches and delete them regularly.
I have the tmous version and flash all the time so I don't have that problem.
Also look for the youtube cache. I've heard it can get pretty big if you look at a lot of youtube vids.
edit: go find cleartemp. There are loads of stuff it can clear for you.
I found 10mb under thumbs.db alone.
Not to mention a few mb for google maps and for opera cache each.
you can also add custom folders to be cleaned as well. I haven't looked too much into it, but maybe I should.
Just remember that caches help your phone run faster, so don't erase them unless you need the memory.
This thread has good suggestions. But most are usual recommendations that will help but perhaps not resolve the issue completely (well a couple of posts do mention temp issues). I had a similar experience recently.
A couple of facts:
1. I install all my apps into the main memory. Never had issues. Opera, IE cache, temps all there by default.
2. I download and save on SD. Music, films, pictures, documents, Android are all there.
3. Still I have plenty of room for storage.
And then I suddenly had that warning!
The cause was temp made by the default ZIP utility that used up almost all my storage space. That utility works fine until I wanted to uncompress 160 mb zip from SD into another SD folder. It started uncompressing, used all storage temp space, gave me error, and closed. It didn't clean the temp though!
I cleaned a bit manually and then installed SK tools that cleaned my device properly and everything is fine now. It is very simple issue and similar to running out of disk space on a PC.
Bottom line: it is unlikely that usual apps use so much storage. I bet on downloads and big user files left in storage and finally huge temp files as leftovers of unsuccessful uncompressing for example.
