How to distinguish between X1a and X1i? - XPERIA X1 General

I am looking at getting a used X1a, but I have no idea how to distinguish between the X1i (uk version with no 3G support in canada) and the X1a(us version which should get 3G in canada)
The reason I am concerned is because I see for/sale adds for X1, for X1a and X1i.... I'd like to be able to check before I buy, and be sure of what I'm getting.

remove the battery
it says "X1" OR "X1a"
there's no other way
PS: this has been discussed before

If you're like most of us, you're buying online...so an element of trust is involved, and you might not like that.
The X1a that you want will be clearly marked as such under the battery. The X1i only says X1 under the battery.

start - settings - device info. - identity.
This is where Sony Xperia support sent me to verify for them I had an X1i instead of the X1a the first time I called in. (I'm in the US)
Mine says X1i there.

I modded "modelname.txt" on my \windows\ directory

Unless they've done something drastic, unlock and you're ready to rock'n'roll.
Wasn't the Touch Dual in America supposed to be carrier free?
If so, both T-mobile and AT&T should work.
It is going to be sold unlocked... But the T-Mo US uses different bands for their 3G then the ATT. Does anyone know if the US Touch Dual will work with T-Mo 3G data network?

Odd that the picture shown has the 16-key keyboard, not the 20-key. Everything I've read says only the 20-key is coming to America - isn't that right?
Actually, some Best Buy pictures show 16 key and some show 20 key.
I wrote HTC to ask and they said there is no Touch Dual for the USA (helpful).
just got back from local best buy and picked it up and it is the qwerty 20 key
I called a few local Best Buys here in Los Angeles, but they all say its not in?
I have to say I dont know if I belive them or not... Anyone in SoCal had any luck?
Just picked up the touch dual from my BB. However, will this work with a mac?
this is so annoying. Once again, Chicago metro area - none on hand, non in distribution. What's the point of these announcements anyhow if they can't be fulfilled - may as well be "Diamond available at Best Buy now" for the effectiveness it has.
Riddle me this - is the old touch that has been available gray market up til now the same unit? If it is - and since I'll be ripping my rom apart anyhow -- I may go back to my fave gray marketers.
Hyper: not without jumping through hoops. As a mac guy by choice, and PC guy by work - it's too much grief. Look for third party software if it's your only choice, or install activesync in your fave windows emulator.

Nope, it's not the same. The on that's been available for a while is tri-band, this one is quad-band with US 3G. Picked one up in local BB today, seems to be working just great and 3G is very snappy. Still no WiFi or GPS though:-(
Dump Rom
Cold one of you guys dump a ROm from your US version? Do they come with wm6 or wm6.1
Thanks
6.1 just dont know if this is a keeper, prob not
Anyone know how to get a gmail account working on a windows device? (So far setting up a windows device is a PITA, debating why Im switching from my Curve right now).

Sorry. I got everything working anyway. Only thing I dont like about the phone so far is that it washes out in the sun. Impossible to see the screen today.
Is anyone using it on US T-Mo?
I am also interested in a ROM dump of the US Touch Dual
Best Buy website for me says Pre order only. I didnt realized it released yet.

I dont know if anybody is already porting this rom to work with other Touch Dual devices but I am interested in a clean Rom dump too. If not lets start a thread to porting this Rom to other Dual devices or atleast why it will or wont work.

Xperia x1a Black

Ok, so all the rumors have said that the black Xperia x1a will come out today through bestbuy. Does anyone have any updates as to if it is or when it is? I have searched the internet for hours and have seen nothing about it yet. Any information will help...my parents are pressuring me to give them a date so I can get it for christmas, if not it's going to be a lot longer.
i got mine from www.addictedtophones.com there are in stock right now. only thing is that its an x1i not x1a.

Ok, I just called them and they said that I does work with the 3g the same as the x1a does...is true? The guy I talked to said that even his brother has one and it works with the 3g. If this is the case than why in the world would anyone want the x1a over the x1i? and this website even comes with a purchasable extended warranty and a free 4gb card?!?! And It also has the better video recording capabilities....I really need advice about this to anyone who can answer!
X1i does not support 850 MHz 3G, (even there is an option to choose that).
So if your carrier has some (or all) areas of their 3G service on the 850 MHz, then you're back down to EDGE speed only.
Additionally, I don't think Call Display works on the X1i in North America. I called my X1i from my home number (which I know for a fact sends out a name/number Call Display), and all it showed my on my XPERIA is the phone number (and yes, my cell phone plan does include Call Display).

do you meant caller ID? Do you have your home number stored on you sim card? when you call your X1i does it say "home"?
So is there still no news from anyone on this matter? I really don't know how much longer I can take lol.

Wow, Thanks dude I really appreciate the link. This gives me something to hold on to until it is released. I have been waiting since august lol. Thanks again!
I wanted the black X1a too, but guys, sorry but it is not available yet *anywhere*
We will have to wait
PS: I can absolutely positively 100% CONFIRM that I only get 850MHz EDGE on my X1i.
I have even flashed the X1A's ROM and still EDGE only...
I can't stand EDGE after having tryed HSDPA... I have ordered a silver X1a in the meantime, and I'll paint it black
Well, still no x1ablack on bestbuy.com does anyone else have any possible information on when this will be released... the wait is killing me and I'm considering just getting the silver one.
to be frank........... i'm seriously considering that the xperia has been discontinued and is a project left hanging. especially after how they terminated their cooperation with htc long ago..... it's dead. no official firmware/rom updates for months already....... there's nothing.
defunct. i feel very betrayed by sony ericsson. total loss of respect.
^ is that true? damn.. that sucks. i'm guessing SE will just stick with Symbian UIQ3 then? no more SE Windows mobile devices in the future?
that kinda sucks especially with the release of a more finger-friendly windows mobile coming out which would be great for their next xperia phone.

Yay! I'm glad I could be of help. Let me see if I can clear up this issue here.
BestBuy has the X1a in stock, the upsetting thing is, that as of right now, their may never be a black X1a. I haven't heard anything of the contrary yet, but it is possible, just not likely. They launched the black and silver X1i at the same time and I don't see a single reason why they would be holding the black X1a back right now.

Nope it's a load of bull. SE always take forever to release a firmware upgrade (which is odd, as their quality control on the updates is never great).
SE have announced that they will be using someone else for the NEXT Xperia. This DOESN'T mean that they have stopped making more X1s. This DOESN'T mean that HTC aren't working with them on the firmware for the X1. This DOESN'T mean that SE won't be making more WM phones.
I've had the X1a in black ever since it came out back in november 2008. Bought from a local vendor although mine came with spanish language, then when you get it just flash the rom with an english one.

Oh yeah? Good thing I always keep my boxes and manuals (for resale purposes). See attached shots, all documentation boxing came in spanish as well as the original rom. Remember X1a's 850MHz band is not only used in North America, but all throughout the Americas in general, I'm using 3G in Panama.

HTC HD2, Telstra and Australia! [RELEASE DATES!]

Hi guys,
I received word late yesterday from my contacts that Telstra will be supplying the HD2 exclusively for at least 2-3 months on the NextG network.
No word on pricing yet but I have got a loose release date! For us Aussies the wait isn't too great which is a bit of a surprise for me, I thought we'd wind up being last! So without further ado:
Just wanted to let you know we finally have an idea on the Touch HD2;
Touch HD 2 – Due for release mid - late January. Exclusive to Telstra for 2 - 3 months. Launching with Windows Mobile 6.5

My name is already down for one, I can't wait!
I guess anyone not on Telstra can just use an imported one... Blue Fly Mobile are selling them for $900 at the moment.
Do you know if the "official" Australian version will have anything special that a UK one, for example, doesn't have?

A NextG compatible version is what I am after so I am holding out for it.
Basically Telstra bloatware will be the only special thing on it haha. Which I'll remove with cooking my own ROM. And of course NextG compatibility.
Hopefully the main difference will be that it will have the 850 3G band, like the Touch HD did, which will make it useable on most of AT&T's 3G network in the US.

Yea, a sweet US 3G radio.
it seems a telstra rom already leaked (841 is telstra rom code)
ftp://rom:[email protected]/Leo_HD2/Official/Leo_1.49.841.1_21869_WWE_OS.NB.rar
btw, what does it mean that the phone is only exclusive for 2-3 months? So for those 2-3mos, you can only get it through telstra (no e-retailers)? Can you get it sim-free during this time or after that time?

it simply means that in Australia, the Australian mobile phone networks like Vodaphone, Telstra, Optus, T-mobile,etc will have to wait a few months before they can have the option of selling it on their networks.
you can still get the device anywhere else in the world unlocked and as long as the device has the right network frequencies for your SIM card then you'll be fine. there are slightly different HD2's made for the world markets, because not all countries use the same network frequencies (USA being the odd-man-out of the world)
i bought my HD2 from the UK (Handtech) delivered for Au $840. the frequencies are a match for my 3mobile SIM card and the device is "unlocked" so i don't have any bull**** about vendor locking and software bloat.
Telstra/AT&T
Please post here when it is available through on online retailer with the 850Mhz Band so that US buyers on AT&T can rejoice and spend some dough...
Thanks
Am I reading this correct that the HD2 will not work on NextG? Is there a fix for this?
tchoklat
I highly doubt a Telstra released 3G mobile wouldn't work on their NextG network, kinda defeats the point.

Because the HD2 runs on UMTS 900/2100MHz. You have to wait for HTC to release another model that's NextG compatible (runs 850/2100MHz UMTS) in early 2010.

use it as a $800 coaster.
or sell it.
I'm using the HD2 imported from overseas 2 weeks ago through one of those dodgy Australian online retailers (electronicbazaar.com.au) and I'm happily using my nextG simcard without problems.
The phone was shipped from HK.
I have no problems browsing or coverage but technically I shouldn't be getting access to the network.
I guess the question remains as to whether I'm accessing the nextG network or not. The carrier name is "3G 3Telstra" on the dialer and I get the "H" symbol come up on the phone. That looks good enough for me.
This information, plus p3ngwin's use of the phone on 3Mobile suggests it's not accurate to say that we can't use an unbranded Leo in Australia...
@tchoklat - have you tried using the phone yet with your NextG SIM?
Yes it fails to log on and I only see the odd 'G' or 'E' come up suggesting sporadic connection to the 3G network, not NextG. I understand that the 'H' means HSPDA or NextG

In a way you have access to Telstra 3G but not NextG. Read this http://www.austech.info/137073-post16.html
Telstra 3G = UMTS 2100 which provides 60% population coverage
Telstra NextG = UMTS 850 which provides 99% population coverage
I have a NextG sim when I was using my TP2 (the sim is my Leo now) and on my Leo I only get the EDGE network and no NextG.
Just what I have found as we have no or limited Edge where I live so the phone is basically useless. I have listed it on Ebay for anyone interested.
Ebay item number 110471705953
thanks all.
Tony
I'll tell you what, I have the unlocked import of the HD2 in the USA on at&t and the edge data on this phone seems as good as my last 3g phone. I think the speed of the phone is making up for it. Now of coarse, WITH the 3G coverage is another story but the edge is acceptable to me on this device.

T9193 has a little more onboard memory than T8585 and supports Telstra NextG.
Also supports Telstra 850mhz coverage in country areas.
T8585 does not support NextG but supports Optus 3G and 900mhz coverage in country areas.
Hope I got that right. Cheers, T.

There are three models of HD2, not five,
t7272 is the touch pro
t3333 is the touch2
T9193 is the telstra and uses
GSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/2100MHz
T8585 is the regular HD2 and uses
GSM 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS 900/2100MHz
Not sure what the model number of the tmous is (PB81120 is the model ID) and it works on
GSM850/900/1800/1900, UMTS: Band I (2100);UMTS: Band IV (AWS);UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100)
The telstra and the regular are identical to look at, not sure how you would confirm which is which, , boot to bootloader and check the model ID, i guess.
The tmous is easy to spot, it has a red end key and a green send key, the other two have white keys, and the tmous says 't mobile' beneath the earpiece.
if you go to settings, about, phone identity it tells you the model number there. along with the imei and the s/n
My hd2 came from the UK (tmobile uk)
model number is HTC HD2 T8585
Another giveaway of the US model is that the flash memory size will be 1024 instead of 512mb

very good point, did not know this.
well if the phone is unmodified it would be a good indicator of model.
EDIT - Actually, its not necessarily the base rom model id it shows, it can be changed easily, for instance mine shows model No 'SamS BabY' cos i cook my own.
Is there any other way of telling by IEMI or serial # what model one has. Bought one of EBAY and the box said T9193 all the #'s matched but the model# on the phone menu said 8585. The body of phone says NextG and also has a T with a circle looking thing. Also I have it hooked up to AT&T and it does say At&T 3G on the display for the current network. Picked it up on Ebay for 335 shipped from a seller in Canada It had like 75hrs out and like 8 hurs in on the clock but the phone looks like new no wear indicators at all. Almost like the hours are from tethering so just sat on a desk.
IF you scroll to the end, to the settings screen, scroll up and open "About Phone"
Then open Hardware.
What doe the phone say about ROM, RAM, and storage sizes?
go back, open software information
What radio version doe you have?
Phone, menu, options, menu, network selection
Go to Band, List the options under GSM/UMTS band.
These will help to identify wether your phone is TMOUS, Telstra (T9193) or standard (T8585)
"t with a circle", the regular hd2 has no branding on the case at all, sounds telstra to me. if you are seeing 8585 in the "about phone" page, that info is all read from the registry so if you aren't running the stock rom it will show the wrong info.

you can't trust that if you arent on the stock rom, see image, , ,they are just registry entries and will say what the registry tells them to say, i.e the bands of the base rom not the hardware.
The only certain way is to try and download ROM updates from HTC.
It will check you SN.
The ROM you can download is the phone you get.
So Try downloading Telstra update,
WWE update, and look for which roms are available from where you bought the device....
Could be long search....

I'm 99% sure that Circle and T is Telstra which would indicate its a T9193. The only exception I can think of is if the prior owner used a Telstra branded housing to replace one that was branded differently. With there being so much selling going on for OEM and non-OEM used and new parts, unless you know the pedigree of the phone, it's kind of hard to determine.
I'm very new to the HD2 world having bought my first one just recently from a fellow in Australia. This forum and the friendly members are an awesome resource for information. I'm learning something new every day just be sifting through all these threads. Going blind doing so too!

CPU is Qualcomm(R) 8250B
Speed is 1024
RAM is 448
ROM is 1.48.707.2 (71294) WWE
Flash size is 512
Storage is 195.42
Data Bus 32 Bits
Radio ver. 2.05.51.05_2
OS version 5.2.21869 (21869.5.0.82)
The bands from what I read don't matter to much since you can change the rom and might not show the 850 band.
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
GSM (1900)+UMTS(850)
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(850+2100)
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(850)
Hope this helps, i did load a cab. for the telstar bands to apear. because they were not originally there. It was called Agoattamer telstar band type settings.
I copied down as it appears on the screen

"t with a circle", the regular hd2 has no branding on the case at all, sounds telstra to me. if you are seeing 8585 in the "about phone" page, that info is all read from the registry so if you aren't running the stock rom it will show the wrong info.

I thought of that too changed housings. Phones looks absolutely new but it had 75 hours on the meter so. not unless it had a full housing to keep it looking like that. Seller has a perfect score 77 and 100% on ebay. item #120619427477 asked if it was a T9193 said yes that why i jumped on the deal.
Thanks Guys for all your reply's. I did not think of it Thanks Wilco for the idea. Found the Australian web site for HTC and entered ser# an in deed it is a Telstar. phone person i got it from must of flashed it no big deal though. Now just got to make sure it has the right SPL for further flashing. By the way you guys recommend to do the ROM from the HTC web site or should I keep what I got.

Xperia X10i swap with X10a

Hey Everyone,
I had purchased the Xperia X10i when it first came out. Everything is good but I am starting to regret that it cannot work with my current carrier's 3G, which is AT&T. I want to know if anyone is interested in swapping their X10a with mine.
Just a brief overview of my phone: it is in its perfect form. Phone has never been dropped, no scratch what so ever. The phone came with screen protector like every other X10. The phone has also been in its silicone protective case since day one. I have all the original accessories, documentation and box.
We can work out detail on how to make sure both you and I are getting what we want. BTW, I am located in Southern California, USA.
Willing to look at all interested swappers. Thanks!
Actually you can change the ROM version from x10i ROM to x10a ROM.
I did it once, change my xperia x10a ROM to x10i ROM since the update for x10a hasn't out yet that time, however i forgot how to do it since I lost my phone.
That's awesome news! But do you know if it effectively change the 3G band from x10i which has 900/1700/2100 to x10a that has 850/1900/2100?
I'll do some search. Thanks again.
But for anyone that is still interested, please feel free to PM me.
changing roms from x10i to x10a will NOT change the bands. You will still be stuck at 850/1900/2100. The bands are related to the hardware, not software. And it's a pain to switch it back to the original rom since you're phone wont be recognized by SEUS anymore.
Bummer, changing the ROM would not alternate the 3G band in which the phone is running.
Any body that is currently on AT&T with Xperia X10 and want to switch carrier to TMobile? Then you might want to consider this trade.
Wondering if there is any interested parties? Thanks a lot!!

i had an X10i on AT&T and i simply bought an X10A after a month. 3G is defiantly worth it. You will probably be able to sell the X10i for atleast $400 on Ebay. Especially if more people learn about the phone once it comes out on AT&T and happen to be on T-Mobile and want it. I'm about to sell my X10i soon.

You got a good point there! That was my original intention as well, but thought I might as well try my luck first. Thanks a lot!
But for those who might still be interested in taking a trade, please feel free to PM me. I won't list the phone for auction for another week or so.
Thank!
you know, I'd be real keen, but unfortunately we're just too far away - geographically speaking.

they work on different frequency bands/ bandwidths
X10a has the 800/850/1900/2100 3G band. The bands that AT&T 3G and Roger uses.
X10i has 900 / 1700 / 2100 3G band. You can use this phone on TMobile USA and most Asian and European countries.
