3g in China - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I have just got back to china with my universal and am trying to figure out how to get 3g connected.
Currently there are 2 options available for which type of service I can get. One is CDMA 2000 and TD-SCDMA (the chinese standard).
The problem is on my phone the only settings available are WCDMA, which is currently not available although I have been told it will be available in the future.
Is there any way that I can configure my Uni to be able to connect to either of the other 2 networks?
I'm using the Tomal 8.5 rom, in case that has any relevance.
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, i did have a good look around first.

As fas as I know this is a hardware issue so there is no configuration to make it work with 3G in China, it is the same for me in México, I can´t use 3G network

bummer, guess I'll just have to wait for the wcdma

I am also in China and anxiously waiting for July when they've announced full 3G for my city WooWoo

Hey Ringsting, what do you usually use the universal for? I go to China from time to time... you can still use GPRS GSM network, and the prices are quite cheap~

JASJAR/XDA Exec in Japan

Hi everybody
Compliments for an extremely informative and active forum. 8)
I would like to ask if the JASJAR/XDA Exec functions in Japan - I have gathered that it is W-CDMA (UMTS) compatible and subsequently has the ability to do so. :? Although I am not clear
GSM does generally not function in Japan i.e. even my XDA IIs quad band cannot function proficiently in Japan. Moreover, UMTS does function in Japan- does this permit solely video calls (and not standard voice calls)?
The reason for taking one to Japan - The US/EURO PDA phones are generally more visually desirable/advanced than their Japanese counterparts, unlike standard handsets.
Any information/assistance would be much appreciated.
JASJAR+VODAFONE-JP/Docomo
Hi belloragazzo,
Some of japanese have got jasjar and used VODAFONE-JP USIM(W-CDMA (UMTS)) / Docomo in Japan. Also I have got Jasjar and tested VODAFONE-JP SIM in UK for few days.
I hope this helps you.
tom_hiro225 arigatougozaimas!
A dowmo & thank you for your kind reply; it is extremely helpful.
I will buy the JASJAR before I go to Japan and then obtain a Vodafone JP sim if possible.
Once again thank you for your help.
Matane:O)
Yep, Japan use WCDMA (UMTS 2100) that's used in the JasJar. Can't say I've been to Japan since I got my JasJar, but my old 3G phone worked well over there (same principle, at least!)...
JasJar in Japan
I bought the JasJar in England, and was surprised when landed in Japan to have my mobile connected to Vodaphone system in Tokyo. I have used it few days in Tokyo, quality was very good - and I enjoyed connection also in Kashiwa...
Hope it is helpful for you.
Regards
Yes it works, japan Vodafone and Docomo Foma are operation 3G.
You can use those Operatores SIM.
Thats why many japanese guys are buying and bought Universal!
Also some of 3G supported GSM SIMs from out side Japan, can use those operators services as a GSM loaming!
Thank everybody for your kind advice
I will certainly get JasJar before going to live in Japan on 18th October - I understand that I will have to buy a J phone in order to obtain a SIM card to use in Japan.
Can anybody please suggest which is the most suitable contract/prepaid phone to buy with the sole intention of using the SIM card rather than the phone?
Hi belloragazzo,
Here are some information of VODAFONE-JP.

Also you can contract SIM only at local VODAFONE shop.
You might be required some proof when you contract. (ID/Address/Payment ID,Bank acount,Driving license, Credit card, Public bills) same like other countries.
cheers
Thank you for both the links and information, I am much obliged.
I will indeed buy the Vodafone JP SIM 8)
The response on this forum is wonderful; it is an excellent source of information for worldwide travellers.
This thread was just what I needed! I'm going on a two week trip to Tokyo and Fukuoka in March and I'm definitely dependant on my jasjar.
thanks a lot!

Auto Roaming in Japan with Exec
Hi guys,
Does anyone know whether will my O2 Exec work in Japan? I just have a basic GSM mobile plan with Telstra (Australia). No 3G nor GPRS services. They cost too much in Australia! I have auto roaming in my mobile plan but when I brought my Exec to Singapore 3 weeks ago, the auto roaming didn't work. I rang Telstra and they told me that they have already activate my auto-roaming.
Anyway, is there something I'm missing out? Do I need to change any settings on the Exec? I'm going to Japan soon and really wanna to be able to receive calls from Australia. Does anyone know whether is there any setting I need to change in order to activate auto roaming on my Exec?
Thank you!
Regards,
Johnnie

You should be able to roam on vodafone jp 3G's network. Whether you have a "3G" plan at home or not, remember 3G or umts is really just a different band, vodafone and most telco's will let you connect to umts where ever possable, you only need upgraded accounts and price plans when you want things like video calling. So in short if you home network will let you roam on vodafone jp then yep you can use your universal.
Guys, don't forget that to be able to use your 3G phone in 3G ONLY network you also need to have a 3G simcard.
Johnnie82, that may be the problem with your EXEC, maybe when you decided not to use 3G in Australia you didn't get the new simcard and you are still using old GSM one, which will work fine there, but won't let you to connect in 3G only network.
Hi Ratcom and Rottie,
Thanks for your input! The both of you have made complete sense to me. I think I should contact Telstra and request for a new 3G simcard without the real 3G capabilities. (Telecommunications in Australia are really expensive compare to country like Singapore.) Which mean a new simcard that will allows me to use Vonefone 3G network while I'm in Japan.
Am I right to do that?
Thanks!
Regards,
Johnnie
then it should be fine.
I'm starting a trip round the world tomorrow and I'm gonna check how my Exec is working in Australia and Japan...
Do you think there is a good 3G coverage on Easter Island?
Hi Rottie,
Mate, You're lucky that you're going around the world holiday! I envy you! Anyway, I believe that you will have no problem logging onto 3G network in all major cities in Australia. But I don't think that you will be able to get much 3G reception in the Easter Island. I got a friend staying there and remembered he telling me that they have only normal GSM service last year. Maybe they have upgraded their network now?
Anyway, enjoy your holidays!
Regards,
Johnnie
I was only joking, wasn't expecting even a GSM there.
Thanks

HTC HD2, Telstra and Australia! [RELEASE DATES!]

Hi guys,
I received word late yesterday from my contacts that Telstra will be supplying the HD2 exclusively for at least 2-3 months on the NextG network.
No word on pricing yet but I have got a loose release date! For us Aussies the wait isn't too great which is a bit of a surprise for me, I thought we'd wind up being last! So without further ado:
Just wanted to let you know we finally have an idea on the Touch HD2;
Touch HD 2 – Due for release mid - late January. Exclusive to Telstra for 2 - 3 months. Launching with Windows Mobile 6.5

My name is already down for one, I can't wait!
I guess anyone not on Telstra can just use an imported one... Blue Fly Mobile are selling them for $900 at the moment.
Do you know if the "official" Australian version will have anything special that a UK one, for example, doesn't have?

A NextG compatible version is what I am after so I am holding out for it.
Basically Telstra bloatware will be the only special thing on it haha. Which I'll remove with cooking my own ROM. And of course NextG compatibility.
Hopefully the main difference will be that it will have the 850 3G band, like the Touch HD did, which will make it useable on most of AT&T's 3G network in the US.

Yea, a sweet US 3G radio.
it seems a telstra rom already leaked (841 is telstra rom code)
ftp://rom:[email protected]/Leo_HD2/Official/Leo_1.49.841.1_21869_WWE_OS.NB.rar
btw, what does it mean that the phone is only exclusive for 2-3 months? So for those 2-3mos, you can only get it through telstra (no e-retailers)? Can you get it sim-free during this time or after that time?

it simply means that in Australia, the Australian mobile phone networks like Vodaphone, Telstra, Optus, T-mobile,etc will have to wait a few months before they can have the option of selling it on their networks.
you can still get the device anywhere else in the world unlocked and as long as the device has the right network frequencies for your SIM card then you'll be fine. there are slightly different HD2's made for the world markets, because not all countries use the same network frequencies (USA being the odd-man-out of the world)
i bought my HD2 from the UK (Handtech) delivered for Au $840. the frequencies are a match for my 3mobile SIM card and the device is "unlocked" so i don't have any bull**** about vendor locking and software bloat.
Telstra/AT&T
Please post here when it is available through on online retailer with the 850Mhz Band so that US buyers on AT&T can rejoice and spend some dough...
Thanks
Am I reading this correct that the HD2 will not work on NextG? Is there a fix for this?
tchoklat
I highly doubt a Telstra released 3G mobile wouldn't work on their NextG network, kinda defeats the point.

Because the HD2 runs on UMTS 900/2100MHz. You have to wait for HTC to release another model that's NextG compatible (runs 850/2100MHz UMTS) in early 2010.
damn, what do I do with my new phone then?

use it as a $800 coaster.
or sell it.
I'm using the HD2 imported from overseas 2 weeks ago through one of those dodgy Australian online retailers (electronicbazaar.com.au) and I'm happily using my nextG simcard without problems.
The phone was shipped from HK.
I have no problems browsing or coverage but technically I shouldn't be getting access to the network.
I guess the question remains as to whether I'm accessing the nextG network or not. The carrier name is "3G 3Telstra" on the dialer and I get the "H" symbol come up on the phone. That looks good enough for me.
This information, plus p3ngwin's use of the phone on 3Mobile suggests it's not accurate to say that we can't use an unbranded Leo in Australia...
@tchoklat - have you tried using the phone yet with your NextG SIM?
Yes it fails to log on and I only see the odd 'G' or 'E' come up suggesting sporadic connection to the 3G network, not NextG. I understand that the 'H' means HSPDA or NextG

In a way you have access to Telstra 3G but not NextG. Read this http://www.austech.info/137073-post16.html
Telstra 3G = UMTS 2100 which provides 60% population coverage
Telstra NextG = UMTS 850 which provides 99% population coverage
I have a NextG sim when I was using my TP2 (the sim is my Leo now) and on my Leo I only get the EDGE network and no NextG.
Just what I have found as we have no or limited Edge where I live so the phone is basically useless. I have listed it on Ebay for anyone interested.
Ebay item number 110471705953
thanks all.
Tony
I'll tell you what, I have the unlocked import of the HD2 in the USA on at&t and the edge data on this phone seems as good as my last 3g phone. I think the speed of the phone is making up for it. Now of coarse, WITH the 3G coverage is another story but the edge is acceptable to me on this device.

HSPA?

Ok who's got the trick to make the phone report what radio frequencies it can do? I have a bunch of Android codes that make phones do certain things, but none of them work on the streak.
I am trying to find out what my device is capable of since there are too many threads out there that say it can and it can't... i.e. hspa....

But if you were asking if it does Hsdpa.. I can confirm it does.

Ok that code worked, and in phone info section, I am currently set to GSM auto (PRL). You're on ATT... the question is about whether or not the device will do HSPA on Tmobile's network. Currently I only get EDGE.
FYI the correct code turned out to be *#*#4636#*#*

Hey Lord60,
Are you in US? If Yes, I would be also interested in getting Streak to work on TMo-US's HSPA network (offcourse if hardware supports it). I think (not 100% sure) EMlist has a option to see all UMTS supported by phone. May be way to even select/set them.
If you find any info, please share it and I will do the same.
I've been asking Dell, if their new unlocked version will work on TMo-US's 3G network. And no one seems to know it.
I already have Streak but like in your case, only works on EDGE.
Thanks!
Im pretty sure it supports the Tmobile 3G band,
I think there may be a thread somewhere, I will check later and report anything I find.

looks like the beta Tmobile versions supported 3G, and now only UK versions will support tmo 3G, and Dell "says" ATT locked versions dont have support for Tmo 3G.... I would say try an unlock code first, the radios should al be the same.. if you get tmo 2g, Im pretty sure they left the tmo 3g radio in there as well.

The Streak is quad band gsm. That's 2G speeds. TMo 3G speeds work on AWS 1700 band. There were only a handful of beta phones with those specs. If you're looking to flash a whole new Rom including the radio frequencies then I guess it's possible. There are some really talented people here. Dell already has FCC clearance for the AWS version but hasn't released it to the public yet, if ever.

Hey chrisrotolo, I bought Streak back in September w/o AT&T contract and got it unlocked by calling AT&T.
When I put my TMo sim card, it only works on EDGE/2G. It never worked on 3G.
I've seen a screen shot of EMList which shows you and may be lets you select UMTS bands, but in Mr. Steve's 1.5.1, EMList is not included i believe.
When Dell recently announced Unlocked Streak (back in November), there were rumors that it might work on TMo-US 3G network. So far no one seems to know for sure.
So guess we are out of luck, as of yet!
Thank you for the reply though!

Hey Streakr, I always thought that radio frequencies has to do with the hardware and not with ROM.
Now that you mentioned its controlled on the ROM side, I wonder how easy/difficult it is to support this on Mr. Steve's ROM.
May be Mr. Steve could answer it for us.
Thanks for the info though.
Yeah I am unable to get EMList on dJ_steve's 1.5.1, you could ask him to bake it in Im sure, but I can get some cell info stuff when selecting >shortcut>bettercut>all applications....
I would love to find a list of AT&T's (or T-Mobile's in your case) full list of USSD codes or MMI Codes ( eg.*1234# dialer codes), for network, service and diagnostic stuff. I am sure it would be very easy to screw something up with those codes as well.
maybe even some fastboot codes...
I found this link on gsmhosting, anyone know any more of these codes, you can enter from keypad on fastboot screen?

I dont know if you can access any of the mobile networs through settings and manually configure it through APN or manual network operator.

From what I have been told the radio frequencies are set by the manufacturers. The hardware is capable of doing any of the operators frequencies but how each is set I'm not sure of. I have heard of people who have claimed to have changed a EU version phone to a US version phone including the carrier settings. This is way behold me.

[Official] Galaxy Note 2 Discussion China

Hi,
This thread is for Chinese or people who live in China. You can discuss problem related to the Chinese version of the phone.
In China we have the N7100/N7105 and N7102 versions
Re: [Official] Galaxy Note 2 for Chinese user
If some of you get the problem "NOT REGISTERED ON NETWORK" after flashing a custom ROM here is the solution(thanks to zuleamu.
Well to be honest zuleamu found the solution but it was there all along on this thread from Ariza27->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918601
When you use Ariza27 solution don't be stiff and press the THANKS button.
Not a lot of Chinese users here.
Well, Chinese users usually prefer forums in Mandarin. I think the problems of the N7102 are pretty well documented in the N7102 thread. Any news if Samsung China has done anything to solve them?

Well if you know it's a fake, there is not much we can do for you here.
I live in mainland China (Beijing) and own the GT-N7100; my unit is the international version from Hong Kong to be more precise.
The guy who sold the phone to me (a friend's friend...) said that it was lock-free and that I would be able to use any SIM card in it.
While it didn't matter too much at first, it does now. I bought a China Telecom SIM card hoping it would work but it doesn't seem to.
I don't know anything about phones to be honest, but I'm usually okay with electronics and gadgets and I've been playing around for a bit.
My problem is the following: When I scan for network, I am only able to find CMCC (China Mobile) and China Unicom networks. I tried changing some stuff in the settings and playing with the *#197328640# menu, following my friend's advice, but it didn't help.
Is that specific model incompatible with China Telecom networks and unable to use CDMA2000? (It's supposedly unlocked/sim free....)
My baseband version is N7100BUALI8 and the build number is JRO03C.N7100ZSALJ2.
As I said, I don't understand phones too well yet. I read those forums a bit but I'm still confused.
Is my modem not adapted to mobile networks in China? Do I need to change settings somewhere?
I didn't root the phone either by the way.
Please Haaaalp!
Hey, in reference to the China Telecom...I am not sure that you will be able to access that network, I am not sure about the technology that they use. I know that you can use EDGE with either China Mobile or China Unicom, but, I know that Telecom sometimes uses some lesser-known standards for 3G. I have never actually tried to use their GSM network, as over my 10 years here, I have never had access to it. I don't know how helpful that is...
I also use N7100 (International Unlocked Version) in Shanghai. I only have access to China Mobile (2G) and China Unicom (3G).
CDMA is not a GSM compatible technology.
Rooting only has to do with the file structure, nothing to do with the modem on the phone.
Anyways, I hope something I said helps.

Cda9er is right above. China Telecom doesnt use GSM technology as long as i think as they are using CDMA for their network.
China mobile - GSM for 2G but TD-SCDMA for 3G
China Unicom - GSM for both 2G and 3G (Perfect for our internation GT-N7100)
China Telecom - CDMA for 2G and 3G (I think)
So you can either use 2G china mobile as i am using or use 3G from China Unicom. Hope this helps.

I'd like to thank both of you for clarifying that! Exactly the answer I was looking for.
I had the feeling that it had to do with the technology used by the different phone companies.
I've been with China Unicom for a year now but I find their connection very unreliable.
Their 3G plans are kind of expensive and the network has a lot of weak/blind spots... I'll probably resell this phone and get another one compatible with China Telecom.
Thanks for all the replies guys!
Re: [Official] Galaxy Note 2 for Chinese user
TD-SCDMA is China mobile home grown 3G. You need their own phone to use their 3G and it's not as fast as the China Unicom. Normal N7100 won't have 3G on their network.

If anyone tried it please give us some feedback:good:
I'm going to stay in Guangzhou for a few months, looks like China Unicom is the only option. How much are the sim cards ?, I'm not too bothered about calls more interested in the mobile internet a few hundred MB should be ok.

Sounds good, so I assume it's ok to purchase just a sim on it's own and do you have to pay upfront for the whole 12 months ?.

No need to pay 12 months in advance. But you need to go at China Unicom. If you buy a Sim card on these little shop you don't have 3G. You need to register with your passport at China Unicom.

Actually the Sim cards from the little shops are not bad, but you will have to go to Unicom anyway to activate the 3G so it's better to go right away, sometimes they have specials.
N7105
What about N7105 which suppose to be a 4G LTE phone? Can N7105 get 3G or 4G data in China? Seems China Mobile Hong Kong has 4G LTE. Does China Mobile or other cell phone company in mainland China have 4G LTE?

linux distro for E4 Perry?

hello all,
i just bought this phone, and as soon as i got it i installed linage. very impressed with this phone (other than the LTE not working...not sure why). i was wondering if there is any true linux distros that work with this phone? tired a DDG search, and found nothing.
I can't say for certain. But considering we don't even have Oreo yet, it's quite the long shot. Though I hope you find it eventually.

LineageOS doesn't have lte working for CDMA carriers (sprint, boost, virgin mobile, etc.)
i have a GSM phone (uses band 66 and 2500mhz)

Carrier determines band(s); phone has both radios. LTE has not been an issue on GSM bands for most users, ROMs and carriers with this device. YMMV.

odd, it doesnt connect to their towers, i should of said they are a WCDMA carrier, like T-Mobile, (1700/21700 for calling/fallback) and LTE on band 66 and whatever band 2500mhz is on. i tired playing around in the dev call settings, but none of them work.

Provisioning and/or munging APN settings is above my wage grade (more accurately outside area of immediate interest). You will probably want to poke around E4 forum for knowledgeable resources. This thread immediately comes to mind but there are certainly others. Good luck.
