HTC Camera Question - DEVS OR EXPERIANCED ONLY PLS - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Okay just read about 15 pages of things - so from what I understand the camera API is either not public at present or if an older one exists compatibility is limited!
My first question do all carriers telcos regardless of ROM use more or less the same camera app?
My second question - for the following devices:
Touch HD
Diamond
Diamond 2
Touch Pro
Touch Pro 2
Touch 3G
Touch Cruise
Would it be possible to capture a key press or hardware button press and as the cam takes the pic and/or before the shutter goes send a simple command via the ext USB to a docked device?
I ask as I have no dev skills and by that I mean with WinMo as I am a web designer.
How much time and how much of a challenge would this be - if somebody could pull this off or could point me in the right direction pls PM me to start discussion.

OmniaII i8000 Missing Features

Hi all,
I received yesterday my new i8000.
There are 2 features that are seriously missing and I was wondering if anyone knows if they can be restored by a tweak or even an application:
1. the mouse: I hate using the pointing device they give out with the phone, but in some cases, fingers are too big. The mouse they had on the i900 was perfect.
2. Screen rotation/landscape mode: This option also disappeared, comparing to the first Omnia.
I would be happy to hear people's comments.
Thanks.
eh? Screen rotations gone? Are you saying that if you turn the device sideways it won't re-orientate all the screen. This would be a real pain in the a*&e for things like Opera!
Hi dstu69, screen rotation is there but not for all apps. Mine works with Opera. May be try calibrating your device in Settings.

Thank frak for that!
too many problems
Actually, some automatic rotation is indeed available in some applications, but, for example, I have a GPS application that loads based on the current orientation and it looks bad in portrait mode and there's nothing I can do to fix it.
Also, I'm discovering more problems:
1. When I download emails (IMAP, but I didn't test it in POP3), if i click on them to view them, they are not shown.
2. The excellent mouse we have in the original Omnia disappeared.
3. The flashlight (volume-down long-press) also seems to have disappeared.
This phone is somewhat disappointing. One would think that they'll keep the good stuff and improve the phone. Instead, they took away the things that made the first version so great
Omnia II Missing Features
I just sold my Omnia i900 assuming that the I8000 would build upon its predecessor's strengths? What a shame for Samsung! Here are my findings so far:
Aside of all the issues already mentioned I learned the following:
- Screen reorientation works on some apps but also on e-mail/messaging, provided you select the Samsung keyboard Irgh!!!! Silly as it may sound, that is the case!
- Mouse is history as the CUBE does not have the sensor built in!
- Signatures do NOT work except when creating new mail! Yes, the flag for inserting signatures for replies and forwards was selected!
- There is no way to advance from one e-mail to the next other than going UP to the in box and selecting the next one manually! That IS stupid SAMSUNG. like the previous Omnia, one should be able to flip through e-mail with a gesture as if we were flipping a sheet of paper!
- Fianally a managed to synchronize the sent items folder in outlook! However, you have to unselect the TouchWiz interface, go to the email application and select the options menu. Otherwise it is inaccessible!
- I hope WM6.5 rendition of Samsung takes care of that? Does Anybody know when WM6.5 will be made available?
Cheers

I agree that there are some issues with the Omnia II i8000 but many of the ones you listed work fine...
1. Screen Orientation-Yes it's automatic for Opera and SMS/MMS typing but no others. However, there is a fix where you can assign a button to rotate ANY screen at ANY time. Check it out on here...http://www.modaco.com/category/410/i8000-omnia-ii-http-i8000-modaco-com/
2. I agree about the Mouse and the CUBE not using the sensor.
3. I had NO PROBLEMS with signatures straight out the box.
4. If you start reading your emails from the top of the list, after you DELETE one, it does move to the next one. I agree you have to go back UP in order to read the next one if you don't DELETE the one you were reading.
5. I had NO PROBLEMS syncing SENT mail from Outlook straight out the box.
6. There are several WM6.5 ROMS over on MoDaCo. I've tried a few and each have their own PROS and CONS. Last I heard was Samsung won't have a release until early 2010. By that time, I would have moved on to the HD2 U.S. edition (assuming it's available).
Got my i8000 with original Wimo 6.5 (21856.5.0.65) a few days and i´m happy with it (previous device was nike with manila 2d).
1. there is a tool called OrientationDetection from mcbee to define the apps to autorotate.
2. don´t nedd a mouse or a stylus. fingerfriendly touchwiz let you make all settings with your finger.
4. Perhaps it´s 6.5, but i can flip through sms/email with sliding the finger from right to left.
I would totally agree with positive comments of I8000.
This is my first non-HTC phone in last 5 years (S200-Trinity-TP-T.Cruise) and I must say WOOWWW!!!
Build quality unseen by HTC, hardware (just put SKTools benchmark you'll see some 50% better performance over HD), lightweight.
I must say - I don't like Samsung software - but prefer naked WinMo. But when was re-cooking the problem? At least for this forum members?
So in one word, Samsung made terrific WinMo phone.
Must say that every HTC I owned forced me to certain compromise:
1. Qtek S200 (speaker would die)
2. Trinity (excellent, but paint peels quickly - come on!)
3. TPro (sold it in 3 days, keyboard wobbled, and was not substantially faster than Trinity - which could be overclocked if needed as well as S200)
4. Touch Cruise (thought I could be easy for a while - but speaker is nightmare, lousiest screen of all HTCs I owned (kinda yellowish) - later I found out that HTC changes vendors for certain parts so check your build date before buying). Not to mention Qualcomm drivers issue. Trinity was faster even when playing Scumm games!
I simply cannot understand this phone to have lower price in the shops compared to HD. Faster CPU (with scalable speed), AMOLED, 720x480 video at 30fps, 16GB integrated storage, lighter 20% and roughly 50% faster in all benchmarks. SKTools build I used put it as a fastest PPC device (didn't have HD2), and not just in processor - check out Direct Draw test - second fastest after Dell Axim x51.
Dunno for sure - but that might mean that beside CPU raw-power someone also put some effort in writting proper drivers.(ahemmm!)
I can only say - we my friends have been heavily ripped off during past years for owning WinMo devices. Thank heaven for competitors!
i have my one of my buttons maps to rotate the screen (above camera buttom) and it works quite well most samsung apps that have rotate work without the button but if i want to force it i can using a button so i get the best of both worlds
from modaco
To be able to manually rotate the screen in any application: go to registry hk_local machine – system – gdi – rotation; in key HideOrientationUi change 1 to 0. Then open Settings – Personal – Buttons and assign to any button the command “Rotate Screen” (you can see this option after you change the registry and only in winmo setting page) (working well for me, I prefer to be able to choose when I want to view something in landscape mode than relaying on how I rotate my phone…)

Auto rotation can be achieved by using Orientation Detection. You can selectively choose which programs to autorotate.

There is also a onboard-autorotation. It can be configured in registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\AutoRotation
It is recomended to select allways the next upcoming number in the string
The whole number of strings must be set in the dword "Count"

[PRJ][BETA][DEMO] Screen lock utility / concept

Hi Everyone,
I don't know if I'm just reinventing a wheel here but I encountered a problem with screen lock software and prying eyes. Basically it doesn't take long for repeated use on a single part of a touch screen to be visible at certain angles.
I had one idea to help prevent this and made a quick demo/beta app.
Wondered if anyone on here had any thoughts on the project before I commit too much time into it.
I'll work on screen shots...
The installation is pretty painless - there isn't one (lol) - just unzip the exe and run, make sure you have .NET 3.5. There's a ABOUT page displayed (with a real exit menu) and details / default PIN.
Comments welcome, but remember its the concept on display, not the desing (and distinct lack of graphics).
More Information
It is obviously developed for touch screen devices without a keypad, which I imagine circumnavigates this problem.
It has been tested in the emulator on 320 screens, and on Touch HD. I'll try it on the Magicinan, and Hermes later.
If anyone would develop such app, it would be great ! I was searching for months for something like this. Please, if anyone can develop such app for WVGA screen (SE Xperia X1) it would be great & very appreciated.
For avoiding the mess with downloading, unzipping, copying to emulator dir, running the emu etc, it's usually wise to post screenshots so people immediately grasp the idea.

How would you change HD2 ?

Maybe HTC is reading this forum, so I start a thread for your changes and wishes for HD2. My changes are (wishes for HD3):
- Oled display
- display with capacitive sensors AND press sensitivity , for gloves, finger nails, stylus
- More battery power or less power consumption
- Hardware GPU support for ALL applications !!!
- TV - Out with adapter
- Hardware Buttons in better quality AND going inside (like iphone , Grr) , so you don´t press always any button if you just take the phone in your hand
- Maybe better CPU power or dualcore. I don´t need it right now, but 1 year is a long time and I want to avoid that htc use the same CPU for another 5 years as in the past
- Camera with 720 p video and better lenses.
- stronger WiFi connections
And my manila wishes are:
- manila style Task manger / switcher
- manila style task management tool instead of MS office old thing.
- manila style notes
- manila style counter and stopwatch, like it is in Android right now.
- manila style Email client !!
- better album application, with easy folders access.
- much better mp3 player ! : I want rate my music (and sync, of course), intelligent playlists for my own ( 4 stars, for example), I want to search for music with keyboard and switch fast though it with letters on the right side to jump to S for example. The last two wishes are already there, in the contact manager !! I want the same for music and video ! Better caching of thumbnails, there should be no reload every time I scroll. (same as contacts, there IS no reload !! right now )
- video player with folders and DETAILED view: I want an image AND the name of the movie ! Most time you can´t see what file it is, because it is just a small image . Rateing and playlists, too. And of course keyboard search and Jump to letter, just the same interface for contacts, music, videos, Footprints, weather cities with same slight modifications for each area.
- manila style google maps application with smooth !! multitouch.
- Opera 10 with multitouch, of course.
And : SAVE AND SNYC with ALL Manila and System settings with my desktop or in a file at least !!!!!
Imagine, you do a Rom Update or Hard Reset, just load this settings file and ALL your favorites and "make it mine" settings are back, without hours of tweaking again, your email is set up again, you weathers, your ringtone, ALL of it ! What a dream.......
edit - deleted until HansZimmer version 3 is released with a better humour chip.
I don´t understand your message. Do you think HTC is not going further anymore ? I don´t think so and just want to tell what for me as customer is important for the next device. And as far as I know htc is building the devices for us customers, so I let them know which areas are important for me. If you don´t have anything to tell about this subject, please let you opinion on another place. thank you.
How would I change HD2? I'd have it fulfill all the promises on the box and the specs: SMS without anguish, all notifications working as advertised, OS that worked out of the box and not needing constant hotfixes, a battery that doesn't have you constantly scoping out the next available wall plug...
Shall I go on?
Yes, please. This is the why I started this thread
Hardware: Nothing. I'd say it's perfect for now. No doubt it will be improved with faster processor, more memory, wimax in the future, but that's how it goes, and for its time it's just perfect.
Software: A "bigger" Sense. As in continue what has been done now, and "finish" putting that excellent layer over the old WM to hide it completely. But I'm pretty sure that's what WM7 will be. And don't forget to store a whole lot of settings in the registry so that we cant continue to tweak them to our own liking
Also, unified software and hardware specs to ensure inter-device compatibility, so we dont have software that works on some devices but not others, or miss support for hardware capabilities anymore, and a marketplace that goes with it. Also part of it as it seems.
longer battery, more than 3 alarms
that's it
imagine an HD2 with the same buttons on both side of the screen but the middle buttons are dpads/trackpads/touch screen maybe even track balls!

I'd love that! It'd be like the HP iPAQ hx4700 (4" VGA display PDA), which I LOVE. Buttons on sides and trackpad in the middle. Though I wouldn't want to make it bigger or make the screen smaller...
Stereo speakers. Such a beautiful device needs beefy sound to complete the package.
Bigger internal storage.
Sense should BE the default UI for Windows Mobile... forever. It is the most beautiful UI on any Phone OS to date!
HTC Should build their own proprietary OS just for their phones so that it is tailored to work the best in terms of speed and stability. And not some overlay on another OS. Love my HD2 tho!
The HTC HD2 is almost perfect! What changes I would like to see...hmmm...easy
1- Remove the camera protrusion in the rear.
2- TV-out
3- More internal memory
4- Video Call feature
5- Built-in VoIP SIP
What I would "want" them to do...
a- capablity to install Xeon QuadCore processor chip
b- Twin Hyper cooling fans for the processor
c- Night vision with heat/UV vision camera
d- Direct Blu-Ray quality video recording
e- Capablity to Plugin a USB external HDD
...think I've oozed out too much greed....I'll just stop now!

And don't forget this important aspect: purchase price!!
Putting the new HD3 on the market at $199 (€145, £127) would definitly be the best aspect of them all
And don't forget to give all accessories prices like: $27 for car charger, $ 25 for extended battery + cover etc..
Ah well... we'll have to keep dreaming, 'cause who knows what the 'evil' minds of HTC are up to next
Grtz,
Degake
santahtc,
yes, bring us good stereo speakers as my sharp 903 had.
and an always accessible SDhc card slot.
and a flat back, not that surfboard one!
I'd like the HD2 to have a more constructive forum on xda, where there's less trolls and flamers. Other than that, I can't fault it.
A touchscreen that enables typing would be nice. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595655

Is it just me, or are people wanting a quad core laptop in a smartphone...
The reason I got the HD2 was to combine my phone, PDA and media player, and it does
My pockets are so light now.
One thing, I wish I could lock the screen during music/video playback I want to see the screen and not pause the playback accidentally
USB host
Video Out
Better battery performance

[Q] Multi-touch on HD2 when using Android?

I was wondering if the HD2 suffers from multi-touch issues like the Nexus One:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsSUqkh8pcI
(contrary to what the comments on that vid say, 2.2 did not fix such issues since it's a hardware problem)
I plan on getting either a HD2 or a HD7 from T-mobile.
For on-screen keyboards, I want to be able to hold down shift with one finger while being able to type with the second finger. On the Nexus One, you cannot do this as demonstrated by the video above; only 1 finger on the screen at a time or you will get an incorrect input!
Hopefully HD2 doesn't suffer from such issues!

Sorry but you did not answer my question. I am already aware that software dictates the possibility of the multi-touch but hardware is the ultimate bottleneck. Plus, there are 3rd party keyboard alternatives in Android Market that implement multi-touch.
In case I need to rephrase, I asked:
Does HD2 suffer from the same multi-touch issues as the Nexus One?
-----------
Answered my own question:
http://www.htcphones.net/htc-hd2-multitouch-video/ Old vid, but it appears to suffer from some issues. This is done on Windowns mobile so results will vary.
another xda thread: http://www.htcphones.net/htc-hd2-multitouch-video/ (the problem exists similar to the Nexus One but it is not as prominent)
This vid best illustrates the inability of multi-touch if attempting to use a multi-touch keyboard on the evo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P9vMAvvkGY
If you were to imagine the finger inputs were on a keyboard, you will see that you will be pressing the letters "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" or "mmmmmmmmmmm" quite often. Therefore, you are only able to go one finger at a time, making sure to lift your finger #1 prior to putting down finger #2; otherwise, you will get a "stuck" screen input
no it doesn't , i tried it several times with all multituch applications in android market
More fingers (e.g. 4) multi-touch like on Desire HD
Did some searching on the forum, but can't find a real "answer" to this..
The Desire HD supports even 4 touch points (see youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RID1q92iuL0)
Is this possible on the HD2 with a different touch panel driver? Or is the HD2 limited hardware wise to only 2 touch points (pinch to zoom)?
Hd2 is limited to 2, and it has the problem where if the 2 touches are on axis's close to each other, then they will register on the same axis. Can make using on screen controls or keyboards a problem as it will register pushes in the wrong place a lot.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
What about that? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=651877
I followed that thread while it was active, but it doesn't prove anything. XDA member Scilor also tried to achieve multi touch for more than 2 fingerers, but was unsuccesfull.. This may well be because, also according to him if I understand correctly, the -windows mobile- driver forces 2 touch points only. However according to his information a 3rd finger was recognized, but he could't get the coordinates from the driver.
If you look at the touch panel compared to that of the Desire HD (a friend of mine has one) they look exactly the same (same "dots" in the screen).
That's all I know. It may well be a driver issue, but maybe it's safer to assume that the HD2's touch panel is limited hardware wise.
Well it's not that big of a deal (is there any app on android that uses more than 2 fingers anyway?), but it would be awesome to know that your device supports more than 2 points.
Anyway, anyone have some troubles with touching corners? Sometimes when I'm playing angry birds and i drag slingshot by moving my finger into corner, slingshot get dragged into other way (backwards) like i would drag it on the other side of the screen.
thanks or all informations

Rasp pi + HTC desire 500 screen

Hello,
what i'm trying to do has been discussed quite a few times before in many forums but i never found a concrete answer. also most threads i found on the topic are old, so here i start a new one with the hope i will find what i need.
i have a HTC desire 500 phone which is not used anymore. it only has minor touch problem. i want to take the screen out of the phone and put it together with a raspberry pi 1 B. getting the touch option is not needed, mainly want to use it as a non-touch display.
help needed list:
1. (little bit off topic/forum) where can i find what specific model of screen was used in htc desire 500(or any smartphone), who made it and spec-sheet/details about it?
2. it will be great if i can use the gpio pins for the screen, or else hdmi. what are the steps to make it happen?
3. list of hardware i will be needing, i want to make it handheld, it would be nice if i can connect the screen directly to pi.
note: please don't suggest setting up VNC in phone, or to buy a screen that made for/work with pi. that is not the point.
here are some links i found:
