Uninstalling programs is impossible after Xperia firmware update - XPERIA X1 General

Hi everybody,
I have a problem with all the stuff I have installed on my Xperia. Yesterday I used the official update software from SE to update my firmware. I made a backup of my personal information like contacts, messages, etc.
After the update was finished I restored the backup, and I got everything back...
Ofcourse my programlist was clean and the programs like for example TomTom, Xperia Tweak, etc. were gone. But I installed this programs on my memorycard and I noticed that the list behind "Removing Programs' isn't that clean....infact all the programs are still there, and when I select a program to remove it gives an error. It says it's not possible to remove these programs.
Does anybody know a way to get rid of these programs in the remove-list?

And you're sure the program isn't running in the background, right?

Yes, the firmware update has removed everything on the internal phone memory. But because the programs were installed on my external memorycard the systemfiles of these programs are still absent but I can't start the programs because their Icons are not showen in the programlist. (problem 1)
And the programnames do show up in the 'Remove Program'-list, but If I select the program overthere and push remove, I get an error it is impossible to remove it. (problem 2)

You obviously did not backup enough.
Install Total Commander, go to the .exe files in the \\Storage Card\Program Files subdirectories and choose File >>>>>> Make shortcut. The destination should be \\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

If you want to be sure, that all programs are completely removed from the system (also "Remove Programs" List), you should make a hard reset and delete them from the sd card manually!
But most programs can be started without being installed. You can simply copy and paste them.

Excuse me, 'cos I'm still before my upgrade:
So how to properly work with apps installed on card?
Let's say I make a backup with spritebackup, and I backup contacts etc. and settings.
But I don't backup apps since I want to reinstall them manually.
So, should I UNINSTALL all of them before backup?

If i where you, i would make a backup of messages, contacts, etc., then update and last make a hard reset. It deletes everything on the phone, but not on the card. So if you have installed progs on the sd card you just have to delete the "Program Files" Folder. Then you can install them new.

restoring data after updating the rom

If I apply the latest ROM upgrade, obvously I will lose all the data on the system.
Will I be able to restore from Sprite Backup my:
Contacts?
Events?
Tasks?
documents?
applications?

No not exactly but all is not lost.
You cannot simply use either xBackup or SpriteBackup to do a backup and then a restore.
If you sync your PIM data (contacts, tasks, appointments etc.) with MS Outlook you will be able to restore them easily enough with a simply sync once you have restablished the partnership after the ROM upgrade.
However you will need to reinstall all 3rd party applications again.
To save the data from any 3rd party applications manually copy the respective data files to either your memory card or your PC's harddisk and then manually copy them back once you have performed the ROM upgrade and reinstalled your 3rd party applications.

gutted,
sounds like a few hours work. I will wait until the sytem is so clogged up that i would need to do a hard reset.
thanks for your quick response
ashby
when i do a hardreset
i afterwards go into activsync when i connected the device once more
and choose add remove programs
and just tick the all the 3th party programs i used to have installed and wish once more on and it autoinstall them
of cause this dont work with programs that i installed from the xda itself as cab files
and ofcause hardresets if it's because one upgrade the rom may end up with some programs not working like from 2002 to 2003
and maybe with 2003SE aswell if programs mess up with the res aware stuff
Pardon my ignorance, but why can you not just restore from xbackup or using a backup file via activesync. What about sms. I have over 1000 sms that I do not wish to loose.

Me face the same problem
Any help would be Appreciated.
Hello Guys,
Try JEYOS software its fully functional free for 15 days, you can connect your PDA to your Outlook and download all the SMS's in to already installed JEYOs plugin, and then restore them again later on.
But be carefull as this plugin will give some hard time to the Outlook during loading and get crash, but dont worry u not gonna loose any backuped SMS's, just restart your Outlook and it will be ok.

Try to install the new version of Skype on top of the older one.

Here is a procedure
There is a lot written about this on the forum. It is a major nuisance that nothing uninstalls properly. Here is what I do:
Backup device (I use spb backup)
Turn program off. Sometimes this requires killing the running file.
Uninstall using using the uninstall function, either from the device or activesync.
Soft reset. If program still runs, kill it.
Using file explorer, remove remnants (identified by program name) from /Windows/Start Menu/Programs, /Windows, /Windows/AppMgr and /Program Files. If the program installed to the SD card you have to look there too.
Using Memmaid, kill any notifications the program created. You can use it to eliminate bad registry links, too, but that rarely works in my experience.
Soft reset
This has worked for me.
I strongly recommend being unnaturally organized about the software you install and the settings. Keep a log. After uninstalling a bunch of programs, you are probably going to want to do a hard reset and install the software you actually like, and this will be easy if you have all the information (passwords, settings) at hand. It is the only way to have a clean device with no remnants of programs that didn't properly uninstall.

[Q] Uninstalling programs impossible after SE firmware update

A few days ago I have updated my phone using the SE update software. I made a backup of my personal data because the software told me that all the data would be erased.
After the update was completed I restored my backup succesfully. Unfortuantly all the icons of the programs I had installed on my external memorycard before the update were gone in my programlist, while their systemfiles were still at my external memorycard...
But the strangest thing is that the programs do come up in the list of programs in 'Removing Programs'. But when I select a program to remove (with the idea to install it again so I have got the icon back to open it), I get an error and the question to remove the program from the list. If I click yes the program stays in the list
So in short, the problem is that I have a lot of programs on my memorycard which I can't open because it has no icon in the list of programs. When I try to uninstall it I got an error with every program which was installed on my external memorycard before I did the update...
Hope someone can help me!

Sprite Backup - Restore help

OKay... perhaps someone can save me from having to reinstall from scratch - searching did not give me the answer.
Accidentally deleted all my contacts from the diamond after having had to reinstall my PC (and outlook)
I thought to myself, well, I've got SpriteBackup, right? (been running Sprite Backup regularly, excluding the Internal Storage but doing everything else.) - I'll do a restore.
It's a German O2 original ROM, I made no changes to it since the backup a few days ago. The only difference OUGHT to have been the missing contacts.
Executed the backup from Internal Storage, it ran without error, and immediately after the final soft reset I get the message that a few programs (changescreen, s2u, ...) can't be started because either a component is missing or the certificate is invalid (paraphrased German error msg)
It turns out NO Program I've installed myself will launch. Not even those I merely copied over and that normally run without an installer.
I tried factory defaults and running the restore again, with the same results -NONE of my programs work anymore and it doesn't matter if I installed them in the Programs or on Internal Storage
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a way to fix it without a complete reinstall (which I would absolutely hate to have to do)?
Thanks in advance,
Verrath
Solved.
I needed to run the restore from the application rather than calling the .exe, and set the restore options to "replace" rather than "merge", which seems to be the default.
Ah! I had the same problem.
The new Sprite backup has added functionality to make upgrading of ROM easier (great news for those ROM-flashers here!) so instead of overwriting all your system files with old ones it'll do a 'merge'.
You can do a hard-reset, then run the .exe file and choose to do a "Level 1" and "Merge". This should fix your problem.
If it doesn't, then you'll have to run the Sprite Backup application (Which I presume is stored on your Internal memory), Go to "Settings" -> "Restore", and choose "Replace" instead of "Merge". Now go back to main menu, choose restore, choose the backup file and it should work this time.

Phone backup software (not My Phone)

I've just spent well over an hour (maybe 2) re-configuring (and re-installing apps on) my HD2 after installing the latest ROM.
Is there an app somewhere that can 'image' the phone so that you don't have to re-install and re-configure everything after installing ROM updates?
I thought 'My Phone' might save phone settings at least, but it doesn't.

Something like spb backup can but is really not recommended to use it to restore backups when changing roms. Ok just for hardresets but can cause problems between roms.
Maybe sashimi would work even?
That's a very interesting question. It takes a such long time to configure everything ...
Sashimi is really worth looking in to...
It can install cabs, import registries, copy files, execute .exe and run scripts. I already use it to install all my applications, import some registry stuff, auto run pimbackup and rename the bluetooth files tomtom messes up.
Shortcuts on home screen, favourites in ppl tab, favorites for opera are all found in the registry/folders so it is also possible to back these up.
It's a real timesaver (haven't been able to restore email accounts yet though)
Same here...I have spent around 5 hrs to configure it back to my settings...and more over some of the applications that I have installed I don't have the .cab file....again I have to search for them...atleast a tool which export the information like home screen short cuts..fav contacts...list of applications installed would help if a backup software is not possible...
SPB backup does have a "custom backup" option that allows you to pick and choose ( reg, apps, PIM), folders, etc.). You might download the trial and try it to see if it meets your needs.
Sashimi is the best program you could want to reinstall apps and settings its easy to set up and once you have put everything in the right folder then its pretty straght forward to use everytime you install a new rom or hard reset.
I use SPB Backup, does the job flawlessly.
