Interesting situation with outlook

Hey all has anybody else experienced this? when I open up outlook to check emails or text messages outlook's background doesn't load up, I can see on the top bar the name of the inbox I'm currently supposed to be looking at but the background is my today screen. I can send new messages but basically I can't read new ones if I try to touch the screen I activate whatever I hit on my today screen. I took off all my today screen plugins, but nothing, if anyone has any suggestions or ideas, I would appreciate it.

Sounds obvious and stupid but have you turned the device (hold power button) and back on again? This happens to me sometimes and after a reboot it seems to fix it.

Yeah I do the same thing, the only problem is that it's doing it too often and it's a pain to reset my phone 3 - 4 times a day.

You have a software conflict somewhere - it will be v hard to track down. You could try uninstalling some especially if you have spb products installed as they often are the culprits. But you probably need to hard reset and add programs one by one to find the one.

I had this problem in the past (with old ROMs though)
The way I managed to overcome this is to keep outlook running in the background.
I'm using the Spb Pocket Plus and in the "close button configuration" I added the outlook to the exceptions list. By keeping it running, it always come back with a complete screen (not just top and bottom).
But then again, I didn't see this behavior since I upgraded the ROM; I'm on the 2.26 ROM now.

The only spb software I have is spb backup, I always works at first it's just at some point after I've been using the system for a while that it starts doing it. It could be after opening some application and I just haven't noticed. I'll try opening one application at a time and checking to see if it stops working after a certain one, yes tedious I know, but tell you the truth I don't use a whole lotta applications, so I'll stick to the ones I usually open up.

For those of you having this problem, if you are using smartkey, make sure outlook, MMS, Text messaging, are set to be ignored, just like it is in the default smartkey.ini. I had altered the ini and taken out all the programs since I wanted them all to close, but I noticed it started happening after closing outlook with smartkey, so I put it back on ignore and haven't had any problems since (and I hope I won't).

All of a sudden, alarms don't work!

Background:
ATT8525 with the ATTWM5 Rom
All of a sudden no alarm will work on this device. I have SPB Time and City Time Alarm both installed and ever since Saturday morning my daily alarms do not sound.
Thought it was a fluke at first but I've been playing with it tonight trying several different times and nothing seems to work. I even tried the built in WM5 alarm and it didn't work either.
This isn't related to the no sound issue I've inquired about in the past as right now all my OTHER sounds are working.
I've also done multiple soft resets and I've checked and double checked that my phone has the correct time and time zone.
Any ideas?

It sounds like you have some duplicate/out of date/bad notifications in your notifications queue.
First do a full backup (just in case) then:
You need to use a 3rd party app such as Checknotifications (free), Memmaid, SK tools.
Use one of these to eliminate duplicate notifications and see if things start working again. If not, unfortunately you will have to go through each one manually. Look at the ones beginning Calendar and Clock. Make sure that the time/date for these is in the future. Delete the ones that are not. Leave alone the other notifications some of these are necessary for other processes.
See if it works now.
If not, you may have to do a hard reset. Good luck!

Memaid did the trip as it was a built up queue of notifications. Not sure what caused that but at least it's fixed without having to do a hard reset.
This never happened with my 8125, strange.
Also, this fixed a couple of other issues I was having.
My 8525 had stopped pairing with my automobile's BT and it did this morning, and the last few days the phone and stopped doing the first active sync of the day (at 0700) automatically. It did this morning.
Looks like I may check into purchasing Memaid. It's a handy little program.

I have to admit, it's one of the first apps on any device I own. Especially now that it has a reg editor too.
Beware, you may need to do the notifications queue clearout quite frequently, just keep an eye on it for a day or 2. I've found that if you use windows live mobile, this puts 3 or 4 duplicates on your system at every soft reset! Don't you just love microsoft applications?

Kinda back to my original question.
What is up with the Notification Queue? I currently have 37 "time based" entries. A few of these are obvious. But I have a whole mess named "\\.\Notifications\NamdedEvents\Scripts:0x0023B3D0" and a couple of dozen more with similar hexadecimal(?) endings.
They are all "dated to run" on September 26, 2007 at various times of the morning.
The thing is, nothing is in my calender on that date. So what in the world are those entries? Are they safe to delete?

Don't mind us, if you play with Windows mobile, you just have to have a laugh as often as possible (makes up for all the crying!).
On your alarms/reminders/notifications etc, do you have the setting on for 'flash light'? If so, do you have this set for no limit? If so, I think these are your scripts as above. If they are set as no limit, I think they go on for around 40 days or so. So probably they relate to an event 40 ish days before 26 September.
They might also relate to some other software you are running. I understand TomTom puts some strange notifications in.
If so, they are PROBABLY fine to delete. As long as you do a full backup before touching them, then if it all goes pear shaped, just restore your backup.
Whatever you do, don't touch the repllog.exe entries. These relate to activesync and if you delete these, you will have a lot of trouble with synchronising.
If, however you do accidentally delete a repllog file that you should't, Mike has written an excellent guide on how to get it back!

Thanks. I think the message notification thing is the reason. I do have the flash light checked and their seems to be a correlation between the entries and the number of messages I currently have in OL.

I hope by now you have solved your (our) problem. I was able to fix my problem by installing a free program from Burr Oak called Wakeup Tweak.
I never ever RAN the program - I just installed it. During installation, it asked me if I wanted to use default notifications and I said yes.
I then tested an appointment alarm (before running Wakeup Tweak) and the alarm worked.

Hey there... I used to have the same problem under WM5 (I think it was a known fault and the idea was to fix that for WM6). My reminders didn't work, and my alarm, initially came on but I could not dismiss it, and so came back on the moment I switched my phone back on etc. I found that using Pocket Mechanic and then deleting all 'clock.exe' entries i which have the word obsolete added under the type column solves the problem. I think some people have experienced problems doing this and it messed up their device. I, personally, never had any problems but you may want to back up things just in case. Again, it's not a long-term solution and I had to do that every couple of weeks. The deleting of duplicate notification did not, for me, restore reminders etc. I have to say ever since I upgraded to WM6 I have not had this problem so I guess Microsoft fixed this issue.

Slow Down on Hero

Hi all,
Had a quick search round these parts to see if anyone has ask about it, and apparently now
I've noticed that the touch flo interface has become really slow again, most notably when bringing down the notification area; it's a good 5 - 8 seconds before it comes down to where my finger is! Another way I can judge it is by playing ThrottleCopter, any lag makes the game unplayable...
The first time, the culprit was Last.fm's offcial app, and gettign rid of it made it all spring-chicken again, but I haven't downloaded any new apps of late...
*Please* don't tell me I need to reboot my phone every week or so to stop it being laggy; That's why I ditch my Tytn II !!!

...Does no one else have this problem? It's really bugging me, insofar as that it's becoming unusable without rebooting it again, and not placing calls when tapping a contact in the call history list.

Do you use Peep ?
If you are, log out of Twitter via the social networks section in Settings and try another client like Twidroid (which uses its own independent login)
Made a huge performance difference to me on the initial stock Orange firmware.
Else wait for the T-Mobile v2 firmware or go MoDaCo.

I don't use Peep or Twitter, and have made sure it's "logged out" in the settings menu, but can't access the Peep settings menu as I haven't (ever) logged on.
Thanks for the reply, as I quite keen to find the source of the problem. The only other thing I've heard thus far is that rooting the phone _can_ give a speed boost, but it's not been confirmed?

Rooting on its own won't speed up your Hero or any handset as far as I know.
But if you root and then replace the firmware with MoDoCo's you will see a speed boost. His ROM is based on the latest HTC firmware release.
The other thing would be to turn off all the background notifications that apps you have put on the Hero are setup to do... not the stock ones, but apps from the Market you have loaded.
Some of these put persistent information in the Notifications panel and these may be slowing down the handset before showing you the panel.
Then enable them one by one gradually until to find the likely culprit.
Some battery monitoring apps and task manager / switching apps, do use too much of the CPU from what I've read.
Worth a try.

AFAIK, I don't have any non-stock apps that have any b/g notifications, as there aren't a whole lot of apps on my phone (a couple of games, boring utilities like the compass), but I have got the battery status widget, which may be the culrpit... Fingers crossed

Whenever I have used skype my hero lags. I always have to kill skype even when I exited the app correctly. Maybe this applies for you as well? Did you try to kill some apps (check after each kill if performance is better)? this is how I found out the skype issue.

I have TasKiller Full, and I do kill off apps periodically, and haven't noticed skype in the background, although the Last.fm one kept on coming back even after a force kill .
It's a useful app for me (as I use Skype as my main IM), so I'll onyl get rid of it should it be the fault.
Just checked now, as it goes, and there are no non-stock apps running, as it's still slow - taking about 3 seconds for the notification bar to catch up. As for notifications, the only ones I've noticed since the joemax asked the question is Gtalk, Gmail, and the phone ones (sms, missed calls), and the USB one once plugged in.
Oh dear... it's not looking good to find the source, is it? I mean, short of deleting all non-stock apps and putting them back on one by one...

progams that keep running...

I have advanced task killer installed and even after I kill all apps and my phone is just sitting some programs still start up and run.
Such as sprint navigation. It always seems to be running even though i dont use it. I do have an icon for it on my home screen.
Also my visual voice mail is always running even when i have had no voicemails.
Does anyone know why these programs keep running and slowing down my phone?

I don't have the answer to your problem, but I can confirm that you are no the only person experiencing this. I have yet to use Sprint Nav since purchasing my Hero on the 11th, and it always finds a way to creep back onto my running programs list.

I've seen that Sprint Navigation opens with some apps that use GPS, it's weird and I don't understand that, but it doesn't open "on it's own" for me, just with some GPS based applications.

I've seen this also, through using Advanced Task Killer and Task Panel X also. Here are some of the ones I see that pop up a lot in my situation. Please note my comments after them, as sometimes they're fairly vital to keep running.
-HtcIQAgent - HTC something, leave running as negligible RAM gain if killed.
-OMADM - not sure, but think this is a system app also
-Peep - can't kill this at all without it coming back, in ATK anyway.
-Stocks - will keep coming back too, OK to kill tho
-Footprints - also OK to kill
**app.vnotes - this is Visual Voicemail, DONT kill it unless you're OK with not getting notifications!!
**Mail - default Exchange mail app, DONT kill unless you're OK with not getting notifications
**Touch Input - System app, can kill but phone feels a little sluggish if done, so I normally have this one excluded
**providers.htccdma - System app, negligible gain when killed. Leave it be.
This isn't an exhaustive list of course, but some of the apps I've commonly dealt with using both aforementioned apps.

Why are so many programs starting on their own?

I downloaded Advanced Task Killer Free, and things like Sprint Navigation, Facebook, Voice Dialer, etc, the list gets 20 programs long after about 15 minutes... this makes no sense.
Can someone who has used Android longer please explain this to me? It seems that this OS needs much more babysitting than even WM, if it's really auto-starting all this crap for no reason.

It seems like all of the applications you described are system apps that were on the phone when you got them. They may be set to automatically run. I know you wont be able to remove any of them without the phone being rooted and having su access - but i may be wrong.
When you close them, it seems like the OS is just automatically reloading them.
Careful when you kill apps, it could cause some unwanted issues.

So many of these programs have nothing to do with day-to-day operation... this is bizarre.
Does Android supposedly have built-in memory-management? IE, you exit the camera app, it eventually FORCE closes it? So far, I haven't noticed that behavior at all. That's what caused so many issues on my old WM HTC devices.

Android does have built-in memory management. It is how the OS was developed.
If you have a program running on your screen, it will use whatever amount of memory it needs in order to run it.
If the program gets pushed into the background, but is still running, it will still use the memory, even though another program is being ran using up even more memory.
Having free memory will not make the phone run any faster. Eventually the program in the background will close if not used. It will also be force closed if the system is in dire need of memory.
Android knows when it is need of memory.

There are several threads already which explain memory use if you search. Since I'm using my phone I won't go into detail but I will say that task killers are not recommended. It's much better to let Android manage the memory and processes.
My personal experience bears this out as I had a lot of strange issues like losing wireless connectivity when I was using a task killer. Now I let Android handle things and my phone runs smooth. Using a Sprint Hero with Fresh 2.1.2 ROM.

Interesting... all my friends who use Android have task managers... Most engadget posts mention that too. Hrm... I guess I'll make sure auto-kill is disabled and just watch and see how the OS holds up.

I just got the phone this morning and was killing apps left and right. I started to get a lot of Force Close errors.
I rebooted the phone which would clear the memory anyways and I'm letting the OS handle everything now - Havent had any problems since.

Honestly, if you are worried about a particular program running away and have reason to believe it, sure a task manager/task killer can be handy for that one program but historically, giving people task managers on Android causes more problems than it helps. Voice Dialer is your phone app for example and at the CDMA Hero forums, we've seen the phone do some crazy things when we removed it from the phone right after we got root (turns out that thing is hooked to more than just the "making phone calls" feature).
All that said, it's quite informative to google around about android's method of memory management. It's kinda cool!

I had a hero, and it least made it through the day. The Evo is way worse. I have no idea why some things run in the background that I've never used and have no reason to be running in the background. I'm using ATK and Auto Task Manager, which kills app once your phone goes to sleep. You just have to know what apps you shouldn't be killing. As a rule of thumb, I didn't kill any native google or HTC services. I did kill all Sprint services. here is why you don't really need a task killer.
with that, i can say that i do have one but, i don't have any autokill going. i only use it as a last resort to kill things if i have like multiple things producing sound at once.

Honestly I can tell you from experience, that sprint bloat wear will launch on its own all day long. Even if you set ATK or AMM to nuke it, it eventually will cost more batt. in the long run because of the system resources required to launch and kill over and over again. The only way to successfully deal with the issue is to rm the crap, which requires root.
