For some reason I have doubled up on my contact names & addresses. I own a laptop and PC and have synchronised with both. Not sure what I've done wrong but I now have double the contact list that I need.
Theres no way that I can see how to "delete all" contacts in the XDA and start again.
Any suggestions how to correct this problem?

sperrysoft have some nice utils to fix these problems. Best only sync with one PC.

If you find an alternative to outlook which I agre is poo, please let us and me know, )
Thanks for that link, I may invest in that plug-in!
I don't mind Outlook really, just wish I could sync with PC & Laptop!
I was wondering if anyone knew of any programs that would let me simply just send sms messages via the computer so i can type them using my keyboard?
I experimented with pocket controller, but its too bulky and slow and just emulates the screen, all i need is a simple sms message sender.
Check the Jeyo software:
Jeyo Mobile Companion
Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook
SMS cool from Aim Productions lets you send sms from your pc.. it should be out soon if it not already.

I'trying to use Jeyo Mobile Extender with Outlook2003 but after the installation I can't see any change on my Outllok toolbar... :-(

Seeing as you're on Vodafone you may want to check with them. They have created a little plugin for Outlook - in the UK anyway - that allows you to send SMS's from your PC and either have replies sent to your PC or phone. Its free - in the UK - until the end of the year and I presume will be standard SMS cost after that.
Its called Vodafone text centre which you should be able to find on www.vodafone.co.uk, sorry I don't have the link on me.
Pocket controller I use at the office and home, brilliant I think it is.
Quick google later, Linky
Will have to give it a try later
Sending SMS messages using computer
Try this program, Dr Neils SMS Utils, its free and you may donate to support Dr.Neils efforts.
You need to connect your PPC with Active Sync and the DNSMS utils will fetch all your sms inbox . You can use the same interface to send them too. Nice utility.
The only problem it will look for contacts in outlook. if your contacts are not synched with outlook then you would have to type the phone number as well.
if you have installation problems try downloading and installing the .Net Framework. from Microsoft website.
post your feedback to help others too.

yah you have to right click on the top tool bar and select sms for it to show.. something else i did as well to make it appear but forgot w
hat. i'm pretty sure its included in the readme which is there for a reason.
I think Jeyo is crap. The software is buggy, doesn't work for me and also doesn't receive SMS stored in subfolders. The developers know about this issue but haven't corrected it for months now. In my opinion, it's just a bad software.
so what would you recommend is better? also heres a firefox extension to send sms through google, i think it only works in the US and UK.
http://toolbar.google.com/firefox/extensions/sendtophone/
Jeyo mobile extender works fine for me with one exception:
it won't read the address book (fully patched Outlook xp)
Sends and receives OK if you manually type numbers in but once I hit the adress book or "to:" button, outlook becomes unuseable.
I think it is a security issue where mobile extender wishes to access the address book. Normallyy a window will appear and ask for permission, however with jeyo Mobile Extender this doesn't happen.
Buggy buggy, time to uninstall unless anyone has experienced similar and has a work around?

It sent messages and got my current inbox ok, but when I received a message with the phone connected to Active Sync, the software didn't notify me. :?
Even going to Sent then Inbox didn't refresh the new message.

Right where do we start with this tragedy of a phone...
I basically need to retrieve my contacts from the phone, but unfortunately my screen has busted, and I can see very little of anything on the screen, I can just about decipher some words, and I basically need a way to "blindly" transfer contact details from the phone to a PC or another phone.
The methods I can think of are: Synching
I have tried an Active Synch connection but it hangs on the "Synchronising" stage. Another issue with the phone is the radio stopped working, so it was just a glorified personal organiser...So not sure if I need to enter anything on the PDA - as I can't see much of the screen.
Transfer each contact one by one:
My right hand hard key is "contacts" so I can enter my contacts screen. and therefore I know I am ON my contacts page, and I know clicking the right hand menu also gives me the context sensitive menu - but I CAN'T SEE IT, or very little, I can just about make out SOME options. So could someone go through what all the key presses would be required to either send via bluetooth - no doubt bluetooth is not on, and need to be able to "blindly" turn bluetooth on?
Or create a "Vcard"/business card? I think this is saved somewhere, which I can then access from synching and using my PC Window XP "explorer" to view the vcard from my PC. I am able to "sync" to view the folders from my PC, but not use the "Sync" to synchronise contacts, etc.
Can someone PLEASE PLEASE have a look at their XDA EXEC and figure out what key presses are required to save one contact person's details. I should be able to repeat the process for the rest.
Your patience and time is most appreciated.
Cheers,
Kasam
Edit 2: Is there a way to copy all contacts to a SIM card? I'm trying SIM Manager now, but I only seem to be able to go from SIM to phone. :/
Any ideas guys?
Another idea I had was if someone had a screen print software? And could send some print screens of the contacts menu with the options available?
Can't see how else to do this
If someone could be kind enough to contact me on abulkasam AT hotmail DOT com. most appreciated.
Can you install soft?
http://www.pocketvnc.com/projects/pocketvnc/index.php
Install that, and then try connecting to it from a VNC client on your pc...
Theoretically it should provide you full access to your pda desktop... using a window on your pc.
No guarantees here as i haven't actually tested it, just googled for Windows Mobile VNC Server
I managed to copy the PIM.VOL file over from the phone via Windows Explorer (on windows XP). So now that I have that file, can I copy it to a replacement XDA EXEC? Or does anyone know if I can open the file in any other way?
Many thanks.
Also unlikely I can "see anything" to install, unless someone can provide key presses for installation...
I can place files on to the pda through Windows pocket pc synch etc.

You will hit problems if you copy the file to another PDA. You can use an emulator to read the PIM file using XP - you will need to install some stuff though - see here:
Mobile Emulator for XP: (Or use visual studio 2005)

That emulator is pretty cool. Managed to view my contacts on the emulator, but you can't send across contacts. So found some freeware to install on to emulator that saves contacts as CSV files, html etc. However does anyone know of a way of saving all the contacts in the business card format that keeps things like the "picture" associated with contacts? It stays when you beam a file, or send it as business card in any other form. It's not available on the emulator, so any program that replicates this?
I had issues synchronising the contacts with the emulator to activesynch. I used the "cradle" which lets Activesynch see it, but then it fails on the synchronization. Does anyone have any solution?
Many thanks for all your help.
i'm pretty fed up of outlook and how it screws with my contacts *i recently updated, and it removed all the titles from the names which is VERY annoying.* not to mention when i add contacts to my phone, it does NOT add them to outlook (maybe i'm just stupid but when i tried to set it to phone, it DELETED all my contacts sans a few) are there any alternative programs that are a bit easier and funner to use?
thanks in advance.
in one word: no.
Outlook is the easiest way AND the most perfected.
There are a few other possibilities to avoid outlook but in my opinion a pda without outlook is useless.
If you encountered problem it might be
-correct active sync version ?
corresponding to that : correct outlook version ?
-correct settings in active sync ?
If you fail to syncronize with ac....dont even try other solutions.
i'm using activesync 4.5 and the outlook version 2002, i copy contacts and settings from outlook just fine, with the exception of it screwing with the titles and names a bit, it's the other way around that's giving me a headache.
what do you recommend the optimal settings be so that if something is new on my computer, it transfers to my phone, and if something is new on my phone, it transfers to teh computer
(also anyway to stop it from seperating the names and removing titles?)
thanks in advance.
seems to be a settings problem
So i only have a german verison of ac i don't know the english name for the settings.
But you have to tell ac to sync in both ways and give the mobile thing the priority.
Then your problem should be solved.
did that, and once more it deleted all the contacts on my phone except for like 3-4 .... either this install is screwy or something is going wrong, or i'm just an idiot.
i refuse to sync with outlook!
i used to, and i ended up with half a dozen duplicate contact and calendar entries for each one!!! i tried settings, etc, finally said to hell with it and set the phone to not sync with outlook. i feel your pain.
Good, now i don't feel like an idiot
I had similar frustration. I eventually set up my 8125 to its own email address, and turned off the sync-ing of contacts. I have two separate contact lists now, but I'm not losing contacts from my phone all the time, either.
I do not have problems with duplicated events, but I publish my Outlook calendar to the phone, not the other way around.
I never schedule from my 8125. I always tell people to send it to my email, so I can control it from my PC. I only use the handheld on meeting-heavy days, and then I'm only checking email, and not accepting meetings.
Using: WM5, ActiveSync 4.5, Outlook 2003 on Desktop
Well, there is an alternative. I run linux so AS isn't even an option for me. I have been using FinchSync since I got the phone and it has worked great. I can even sync anywhere I have a network connection without being at home.
FinchSync uses an http connection to sync contacts with Mozilla's Thunderbird email and address client as well as your datebook with Mozilla's Sunbird calendar. So far it has worked great. One hint though, take the time to read the install and configuration instructions on their website!
Hope this helps!

I absolutely hate Activesync. I update my phone contacts and appointments via my Tilt, and then hook it up to my computer only to find that Activesync is deleting them on my phone and restoring the older files on my two PC's. I think, "oh, well I must have the sync settings set improperly," so I check them on my PC and my Tilt... it turns out that it only goes one way: from the PC to the mobile device. (Please correct me if I'm missing something.) You can just disable the sync settings, but then what's the point of having the program installed?
Personally, I have few complaints about Outlook.
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to be giving PDASync a try. They seem to advertise all of the features I'm looking for, although it does carry a hefty price tag of $50.
http://www.laplink.com/pdasync/
I'm still not 100% sold on PDASync. It seems to lack the ability to sync internet browser favorites/bookmarks and custom file folders. The quest continues.
On a slightly brighter note, this seems like quite a useful list of syncing software.
http://pocketpccentral.net/software/sync.htm
i must use lapsync because i don't want all 1500 outlook contacts into my phone, so i filter them by category and only sync a certain category.
i dont sync bookmarks, but i know you can use AS to sync ONLY bookmarks. to sync custom files and folders, try mobsync - its free.
I Tried Laplink today, This needs ActiveSync to function properlyu (did not see my device attached). I am lucky I had trial software instead of paying $ 50
I searched the Leo forum and couldn't find any answers
I'm having a not so cool problem with my contacts and people folders..
Everybody has a double entry I had the same problem before and after installing a new ROM, so the installation might not be the problem afterall. I sync my Leo with Windows Mobile Device Center and with Microsoft My Phone. What can I do ? How can I return to just one entry for everybody ?
10x all in advance
PS : I think I'm doing something, cause with my Fujitsu Siemens N520 - Windows Mobile 5 ( I dont know for sure ) I clearly remember having once the same problem
What view?
Are you viewing both sim & contacts? Need to set to view 1 or the other, not both. I view contact, it shows more info..
I had the same problem after installing new rom and syncing with my pc.
There are manual ways of fixing this, but I think the easiest way is to use Microsoft My Phone. It has an option to check for duplicate contacts and delete them.
But be careful not to be left with empty contact list on your phone. Like I did once... Hopefully I had synced my contacts on my office computer.
Try this...Go to - Phone/All People/Menu/View/ select Contacts or SIM
I use direct push from my exchange server and i had this when sycing to my pc using activesync for the first time. The problem is caused by the phone telling the pc that the contacts are more upto date that the pc's. To get around this change the activesync options to "pc overwirtes the device" (it's not exactly written like that but i guess your smart enough to figure it out) and delete all the duplicate contacts from the phone and pc. You won't get it again. If you are seeing the contacts from your sim card should notice the icon for them is differnet. If this is the case then follow the instructions given above to disable sim contact viewing.
There is free software to cope with this prob on freewarepocketpc and also in SKTools or PocketMechanic.
Del doubles on phone (check bef proceed), clear contacts complelety on PC and Myphone and then resync. Worked well for me.
use the attached, works a treat on the HD2.it can be used to remove duplicate calender entires too. Thanks to the developer, cant remember where I got the cab from.
I use dupededupe.
Work very well and is very easy.
Only 72KB
Thanks all for the responses
Sorry for posting so late, I was away for a couple of days
Eventually, I used My Phone - I entered the site, checked for duplicates - and deleted all the duplicates, and afterall, I synced my phone. Fortunately, it worked fine
10x again, Ive just downloaded the little software and I'll keep them if the problem reoccurs .
10x again!
Good luck all!
