been researching on how to change roms anyone know of detailed instructions on how to do this right? PLEASE any help would be greatly appreciated..
There are two options:
With HardSPL
Without HardSPL
With is to use any custom ROM found on the ROM's thread.
Without limits your selection greatly.
You can install ROM's in two different methods. RUU (Rom Update Utility) or from the MicroSD card (1gb or smaller (results may vary by brand of card)) by placing the "nbh" file on the root of the MicroSD. Using the phones bootloader.
You can learn about all ROM's and find your preferred ROM and most authors provide the "How To" in their FAQ's. In other words they will specify how you can install their ROM.
Just a note most of the prolific ROM cooks that made the popular ROM's have retired in some manner or another. Your selection will be limited to the greatest hits from their retired library of ROM's. Since the Herald is an older device now-a-days you can not expect much as in "new" to make this device fresh and exciting. I recommend looking into these cooks/authors work.

Their ROM's were updated and reviewed by many users and have been optimized to most functionality as possible.
Note: The opinion I have referenced and stated is purely my opinion and not to be considered any definite fact towards this topic. In other words opinions are just opinions you need to come to your own conclusion.

First a hello, since i am new to this forum, but very much impressed with everyones effort to pull as much out of these devices and software as possible.
I have been reading a lot about upgrading, flashing, bricks, problems, etc. This to increase my knowledge of what is and what can be. So, now i am thinking about upgrading my htc 3300 to WM6 and have a few questions i can not really find a direct answer for. I was looking for a all in one post or a recent update guide, but couldn't find one. Perhaps this can help others aswell.
Here we go:
A rom is like an image of the OS with certain applications included. You can flash this to your device overwriting the current OS and all of its applications? Does this mean anything i have installed like TT will be removed and i need to reinstall this?
USPL needs to be run first for all custom roms, but not for official HTC ones, then again it can't hurt to run it anyways? Does it leave any permanent changes?
Running USPL or upgrading to WM6 official or cooked has an effect on warrenty?
Are Custom WM6 roms or Official WM6, the real thing. As in it gives all the new functionality (*ahum*) that WM6 is supposed to or are the custom roms a 'simulation' to the real thing? Even if i read that the official wm6 doesnt have much to offer, will it increase performance or slow down things? Is there some post with all possible roms, custom included, like Mark, Meschle's, HTC, vanilla...
If TT is currently installed (pre installed actually), how can i reinstall this program or any maps if i happen to remove this. Is there a key somewhere i need to write down, can i make a backup copy/image so i can always put it back?
There are probably millions of questions more, but these are the ones going through my mind now. I am just somewhat cautious about changing anything to my new device, yet i really want the WM6 instead of WM5.
I hope some of you are willing to answer my questions or will i get a 'use the search function', cause trust me i have, there is just too much and its too much dispersed (sp?)

yes you need to reinstall all your personal applications, and you will loose all the PIM's data as well

It does not leave any permanent changes, once you upgrade to new ROM it will return your mobile to notmal locked status.
Running USPL or upgrading to WM6 official or cooked has an effect on warrenty? some official distributor may cancel tha warranty if you upgrade to your own ROM.

if you have backup program you better backup all the licensed softwares keys, because it will delete all preinstalled software.

You can read all the post regarding the upgrade from this forum and it is very helpful for beginners

Too Much BA's ROM version makes me confuse...
how about u?
pliss suggest us.. which the best one... tq
There is no "best one" unfortunately. You have to try them all, and find the one who meet your needs.
Anyway, there are three Roms: xplode, sun_dream and PDAViet ones.
If you follow the instructions carefully, you will never regret dumping WM2003SE. I have so far not changed the EXTROM size (to keep the upgrade simple) and have tried sun_dream which was hugely better than the old O/S and then pdaviet ROMS which am using now. Suggest you read the threads on each ROM to help you decide.
Prior to changing to a new ROM I wrongly thought:
My phone might change into a brick.
It would not be as reliable.
It would run out of battery much faster.
Make sure your usb port is robust eg it does not drop in and out on your pc and that you disable PC spyware and virus checker before doing an upgrade as these utilities might interfere with the transfer of data.
Cheers,
Alistair.
its a choice... every ROM maker had a characteristic...
so, which one is suits you? try them all
Are the roms on this forums better than the latest official roms from Sony and what extras do they bring?
Also, can you go back to the official one without loosing your warranty?
Thanks for your help.
Hi there, since you're new I'll cut you some slack and help you with some links. I know your join date is June 2007, but you have 3 posts to your name.
In future though, try to use the "Search" button up at the top-right of the screen.
This forum section is dedicated to SE X1 ROMs, flashing and all related activities with our phone. Pay attention to the sticky threads as they give useful information for newcomers.

Yes, many people consider the ROMs being cooked here on XDA-Dev to be superior to the original SE ROMs for a number of reasons.
You could have a "lite" ROM with all the excess programs stripped out so you have the leanest sized ROM for maximum storage capacity.
You could have a "Full" ROM with speed optimisations and a LOAD of programs integrated.
Some ROMs address different languages or world regions and some are just one person's preferred setup.
In the end, it's up to you which ROM you want to try. This is a list of ROMs that are currently being supported and developed here.

YES, it is possible to perform these upgrades without damaging your warranty. Most custom ROMs need something called Hard-SPL installed to allow installation of non-SE ROMs. It is also possible flash back to your original SPL if you need to send the phone back under warranty.

Flashing a ROM to your phone is not something to be undertaken lightly as it is *POSSIBLE* (though not likely) that you could brick your phone (make your phone unusable). Here's a step-by-step howto for flashing a ROM.

Most people on here are prepared to help out with legitimate queries and questions, but please use the Search facility first. It could be that your question has been asked and answered by someone before.

Hi,
I have run a guide on the ZTE Blade on MoDaCo right from the initial launch of the device.
The guide at MoDaCo (I can't link because I am too new on this forum) is designed for new users to understand how to get started with custom roms and is also supposed to keep all users up-to date with the new ROMS and changes to existing ROMS.
The Question I have - I know that XDA is a big community and I believe that users would benefit from having access to my guide; should I Link to my guide from a thread here - or Keep a Duplicate thread in this forum?
Here is a non click-able link
android.modaco.com/content/zte-blade-blade-modaco-com/319831/25-dec-installing-the-modaco-custom-rom-from-scratch-and-other-roms/
It's a great guide, I read it a week ago or so when browsing for information on the ZTE Blade and it's modding capabilities and status of current custom ROMs. As an Ubuntu user I especially like the Linux specific step-by-steps
Would love to see it in "XDA markup", meaning "ported" to this forum since it would be easier to follow when you're used to this forum's style. Although, it's very easy to follow due to being well written and constructed, so you'd have to weigh that against the pain keeping two versions in sync.
Dunno what forum policy is regarding just linking to another site/forum, but I think this guide should be sticky somewhere on XDA. It would definitely keep down the numbers of questions and new threads
Hi all,
I'm newbies in this domain and I would like to trie to make my own custom rom to understand. However i miss concept and I did'nt find any information how I can backup my actual rom from my galaxy S5 to obtain the firmware tar.md5 like those give by sam-mobile to use it to restore on a any phone or to extract to modify it to make my own custom rom.
Can you help me ?
Kind regards :good:
It's not clear what you are trying to do? Modify your own phone (ROM). Or create a custom ROM for redistribution to others?
Making a custom ROM for others is something that should be done by someone knowledgeable, which you aren't yet. If this is your goal, you have a lot to learn and should start reading a lot of existing threads. Do some searches for threads on repackaging firmware and creating custom ROMs. There are existing threads for both as well as a lot of tutorials on various aspects of Android, ROMS, flashing, et cetera.
Also why would you be doing this? There are a lot of existing great custom ROMs.. so what would do you plan doing differently to distinguish yours? At the most basic level, there are modified stock ROMs varying from simply debloated to highly customized. And ROMs built from source code (from scratch).
OTOH if you really meant that you just want to modify your own phone, then your post was misleading. You should still read the stickies and peruse the forum. Or at least do a search and read some threads intended for beginners so that you have some basic knowledge of how everything fits together. But you won't need to know very much compared to developing and supporting a custom ROM for others. If you're lazy.. you could just pick a custom ROM at random and follow the installation instructions in the custom ROM thread.
