I have a Sony laptop running Windows XP. I had installed Activesync 4.5 and when I click on it to launch the program, nothing happens. When I connect the Touch HD to the computer via USB, activesync still doesn't pop up on the computer. I opened up Task Manager on my PC and saw that every time i click on Activesync, it shows up under processes for 2 seconds, then disappears. This is with firewall, antivirus, etc...disabled. What is preventing Activesync from launching on my laptop and how do I fix this? Any help would be appreciated....Thanks!
Try Start-Settings-Connections-USB to PC
Make sure "Enable faster data synchronization" checkbox is unchecked.
activesync still not starting up...any other suggestions?
Looks like a problem with the ActiveSync installation on your laptop. As with any Windows app - standard procedure is to uninstall & reinstall.
If that does not help, download a new copy from the Microsoft website and uninstall & reinstall.
still not working
i uninstalled Activesync 4.5 and reinstalled. restarted laptop and all....same problem.
Then I uninstalled 4.5 and tried 4.2, still same problem.
Activesync just won't open.

my universal and my PC cannot connect through USB, the green icon just keeps rotating. through Bluetooth it's OK. I've upgraded from AS 4.1 to 4.2 beta, the error is the same.. What should I modify? Bluetooth is not the perfect solution, because I'm not using it (i don't have headset or anything)
Remove, disable, kill all firewall that you have installed on your PC.
If it works then, then you need to open some ports in the firewall to let the universal to connect to ActiveSync.

I've already disabled the built-in firewall (I haven't installed another firewall). I've installed this XP today morning  (replacing my Vista, party because under Vista the pda-outlook sync didn't work completely.)
In that case, try this...
On your PDA, go to ActiveSync -> Options, remove your PC from the list and start a new partnership with the PC...
seems to be a bug in WM5.. happens to me sometimes... activesync will need to be killed by taskmanager and restarted... btw, this happens more often in OTA mode, rather than connected to my PC.
happened to me for the 2nd time.
tried everything, starting by disabling firewall, installing ac4.2beta, cleaning up activesync profile on pc and ppc.
is there a solution for this bug without hardresetting my ppc?
last time i hardresetted my pcc active sync worked perfectly again.
One of my big complaints about the WM5 on my Uni is AS 4.x. I don't believe it offers any improvements over 3.8 and in most cases is a lot worse.
As chatbox suggested, this is probably your firewall. I do get this with my setup and I'm completely on top of my system. When I get this I just use the wire *shrug*
I'm experiencing the same thing.
My first thought was firewall, so I started digging through it (I have McAffee). Activesync was set up as approved, so I poked around, found nothing that should be blocking it, and just to be sure, shut down the whole firewall (and double-checked that Windows Firewall was still off).
It still doesn't sync. Not sure at this point what to do; I'm out of firewalls to kill.
Is there any way to repair ActiveSync without doing a full hard reset - my ActiveSync has packed up and won't now work from any desktop or laptop. The PCs start to connect but nothing happens.
If I start ActiveSync manually on the Hermes, it gives me a text page starting "To connect with a desktop computer, install ActiveSync on your computer and then connect this device..."

I had the same problem and re-installed Active Sync 4.2. Works now.

Thanks, but the problem is at the phone end - I have reinstalled AS4.2 several times on several PCs with no luck. In the end I did a hard reset and re-loaded all my apps - took about 20 mins but AS is working again.
Hi all, I have a frustrating problem with my Cingular 8525. I just formatted the comp and installed Vista Ultimate on it fresh. I downloaded WMDC but I can't get it to recognize my phone for the life of me. It keeps saying "connecting" forever and never does. I have done all sorts of installs, re-installs, hard resets, but I can't get it to detect at all! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

first try to install the driver of your device.. go to device manager and look for unknown device at OTHERS..
good night and good luck
The driver is installed... it displays HTC USB Sync. I am getting frustrated . Stupid Vista.
USE the search function dude
Hermes vista config guide
Also make sure you dont have any firewalls active. I have had issues syncing my phone with my computer when using AVG's firewall. I simply disabled the firewall and it fixed my problems.

I already tried that guide... still not working. Ill try disabling the firewall
go to settings->connections->usb to pc and then check Enable Advanced network functionality.
If that doesn't work remove/uninstall htc sync device, unplug device and plug in device to reinstall the htc sync device after you have set the usb to pc connection settings.
Also try using a different USB cable and plugging it into a different port, you never know, it could just be something defective.
But I'm putting my money on the firewall
I had a problem connecting my 8525 to my Vista machine. It would say connecting but it would never finish 'connecting'. It took a while but finally I figured out what was causing it. It was the 'recording' .wav files in the notes directory that were causing the issue. If you have any .wav files in your notes directory I'd suggest moving them to say your SD card or deleting them. That fixed the 'connecting' problem for me and since I did that it's been syncronizing fine ever since.
I tried everything listed in here at once.... something worked I should have done each step by step to pinpoint what exactly... but its working now. Thanks everyone!

Same for me. I had a load of problems getting the Mobile Device Center working with my HTC TyTN. First I was unable to even install the driver when I first connected my device. The "add new hardware" wizard always tried to connect to Windows Update and install an updated driver which then failed. The solution was to let it fail and manually install an older driver from the list using the icon in Device Manager. After that I could start Windows Update and download the latest update.
Then I had the same problems as you describe. When I started WMDC it just hung while displaying "Connecting". Looking in the task manager I noticed that the wmdc.exe process was consuming more and more memory, up until something like 250 MB, after which WMDC just showed "Error". Finally I got it to work. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what I did to fix it. I know that the "advanced network features" under USB in connection settings on the TyTN need to be ticked and the device showing as a Windows Mobile Device instead of HTC USB Sync.
Initially I did a hard reset of the TyTN. Further, I manually unistalled and reinstalled the driver in Device Manager a couple of times. I tried to reboot both the computer and the TyTN several times. Also, I did restart the "Windows Mobile-based device connectivity" service after plugging in the cable. Finally it just recognized my device and I could setup the partnership. Now I can sync over bluetooth too and skip the cable.
HTC phone support was not very helpful with this problem. "We will call you back". Yeah right.
Mobile cofiguration:
Dopod 838 Pro
LVSW 4/17/07 WM6
Hard SPL
PC configuration:
Windows Vista Business Edition
I encountered the same problem. Currently able to sync back by hard resetting my device. The USB to PC connection on settings does not appear to affect the sync problem.
I suspect that the problem arise when I originally sync with an XP machine.
What worked for me was to enable the advanced usb setting on the phone as mentioned...then while the phone is still plugged in, I removed everything associated with the phone from device manager on the pc. Once that was done, I unplugged the cable, waited a few seconds, and plugged it back in (with the advanced usb settings still checked.) Worked like a charm with WMDC.
I had problems with all sorts of "connectivity" in Vista, including connecting up my Trinity, and setting up my xbox 360 as a media extender.
As soon as I uninstalled MS One Care it all started working.
Hi
Im having a problem with activesync on windows xp. My HTC touch HD will sync with vista at work, but just will not sync on my home pc.
Ive read various threads and some say there is a problem with service pack 3 and activesync 4.5 so I installed activesync 4.2 and 4.1 but I get the same, the computer either reboots when I attach the phone or just will not find the phone. The pc does make a sound as if the phone is attached but activesync doesn’t find the phone.
I noticed in device manager that there is windows mobile device #2 with a yellow exclamation mark and the problem is windows cant load the driver, Ive tried rollback driver, uninstall the item but still no luck.
Im running NRG’s rom but it cant be the rom at fault as the phone syncs with vista.
I will try and take off service pack 3 and see how I get on but if you have any advice it would be welcome.
Thanks
Zeb
No, it's not that.
I have ActiveSync 4.5 on Windows XP SP3 here and my two HTC phones connect and sync with no problem. I have even loaded new ROMs on them from here.
Same thing on my other computer with Windows Vista and Windows 7 with WMDC. No problem connecting with my two phones on any ROM.
Try to clean your USB device list, I had to do this on some computers when a USB device is not correctly detected.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
Delete all keys starting by Vid
I have discovered that Active Sync can't usefully sync with more than 1 or 2 pcs - I too use XP and AS4.2 at home (on a laptop) to sync contacts/diary/tasks - and I hook up to my Vista work PC JUST for power (no syncing whatsoever).
I recently tried to Sync my contacts over to a new laptop, and couldn't do it - I had to copy the Outlook.pst files over and then remove the AS profiles on the phone - very irritating.
Have you tried disabling "faster data synchronization" under settings->connections->USB to PC?
I had the same problem once and removing the tick resolved it...
(Remember to disconnect and reconnect the device after changing this setting.)
Thanks guys for your advice on this.
I formatted my pc and installed windows xp again. I installed my firewall etc and surprise surprise activesync worked perfectly.
I installed service pack 3 and low and behold activesync would not play ball.
So Ive taken off service pack 3. Is there anything critical in service pack with regard to updates?
Thanks Bill Gates for testing your updates.
Working here with SP3 and no 3rd party firewall.
Any 3rd party firewall will block the activesync communication as it's done through IP.
The computer uses 169.254.2.2 and the PDA uses 169.254.2.1
Configure your firewall to allow that traffic
I am unable to active sync. It was working previously, I have not put any new software on it.
It beeps like it is connected to the pc, and it charges the phone, but the HD2 icon does not come up in my computer and the Sync center does not establish a connection.
I get an error saying to install ACtiveSync 4.5 on my desktop pc. My desktop is running Vista so I already have WMDC installed.
Any suggestions to get this to sync again?
anyone????
are you running the version of wmdc that came pre installed? because that is about 5 years old now.probably worth double checking the version compared to the latest version.
also, did you run mtty and forget to re enable "allow usb connections" in wmdc?
also try removing any pairings in wmdc an set up a new partnership.
