I used to keep my Ipaq 4150 pretty "bare" - not much installed software - just Battery Pack Pro and a couple of other bits and pieces.
Now I'm carrying this lovely MDA Pro around with me everywhere, I feel the need to put a bit more software onto it than I've used before.
Can you all let me know what you consider the BEST pieces of software to install, as well as WHAT they do, and WHY they are so good?
I think it good to share this info for all the newbies like me!
I need to know what bits of software I can't live without!
For me, they're all there:
Remote desktop (Terminal services thingy)
IE (although it's only doing half a job)
Pocket Outlook (but it's broken on my setup)
So, erm, RUBBISH
It's more a try(al) end error kind of thing.
Download trail versions and see if you like the apps.
Everyone like different apps.
I really like the registry editor tool everyone is talking about.
Hi,
I have been using my vario II since December and intend to get rid of it when i can upgrade as windows mobile is really poor. I mean windows is bad enough on a pc let alone a phone!
Anyhow i just want to do something really simple, I would like to add large icons to my today screen for some programs i use a lot like IE and Salling clicker (so i dont have to keep going ot start). Am I missing something really basic or do i have to go through a load of tweaks to do it.
This is why windows mobile is so poor becuase it shouldnt be this difficult to do something basic.
Thanks
WM itself cannot do that. You'll need to install some other software. Try cLaunch.. if you are more adverturous try rlToday.
that is why i hate windows mobile, its not user friendly at all. I mean i just want to add some icons to my today screen, the problem with windows mobile it may offer extra features but its at the expense of ease of use.
e.g. phone profiles, silent etc if i want to activate them on a nokia i just press the on-off button
never mind, i knew what i was getting into when i bought a windows mobile device, when my upgrade comes around i will just get a normal phone and use the vario II as a bluetooth remote control.
Well, you may want to try using the SmartKey, which takes the left key, if you were to press and hold it, it will open the 'Start Menu', and using your D-pad, it is easy enough to open programs.
As for phone profiles, you can press and hold your 'Communication manager' button and it will go into silent mode. If rather than having 2 phone, you may want to try other programs like.. er.. the.. SPB Shell, that makes WM phone looks like normal phone.
to be fair i know i know how to use the phone, i mean all i want to do is change the icons on the today screen so i can just tap on them and load them! I mean its all well and good having 100s of functions but if you cant access them easily what is the point?
I really think people are crying out for devices which are easy to use and ready to go our of the box, not one where you have to make endless tweaks! Windows mobile is certainly not that, perhaps the new iphone will make a difference.
Well, for one thing, WM device has this 'Today' screen which is one of the unique thing that, other devices (e.g. Palm, iPhone) doesn't have. From my point of view and my usage pattern, I'd much prefer the Today screen than a launch pad.
SPB pocket plus or Mobile Shell will let you add icons to your today screen
hi thanks
i have downloaded spb pocket plus and it has allowed me to add the icons, can you just tell me what is better the shell or pocket plus and what are the drawbacks of pocket plus ? it reminds me of norton i.e. it has a massive footprint and wants to take over your whole system! I have tried to reduce it as much as i can.
I used the gprs monitor a few months back and it slowed my system and effected battery life.
thanks for your help though
cLaunch is less fancy, and small. . and free.
HTC home pluginn
The HTC home plugins (the one from the touch and the one from Kaiser) are not exactly what you are looking for but also can help you.
Those plugins change your today screen and add a TAB where you can put 9 favorite applications and launch them by a simple click on the screen, also gives you a contact tab that is usefull ...you can search for those pluggins in the WM6 section... for me it has worked fine.
Regards
the HTC home plug in is god awful ugly tho.
I thought the HTC Home plug was beautiful. I like the new one even more that has a tab for photo contacts! However, I don't use it on my phone because it seems to make everything take twice as long. Uninstalled it and my phone was zippy again. I use SPB Pocket Plus for icons on today screen and SPB Photo Suite for contacts on the today screen.

keep in mind that even with the advanced amount of funtions, they need to be organized somehow.
You also may want to look into PHM Tray Launch. You can have smaller icons placed in the system tray so access your favorite applications. (PM me if u want it, I can't upload it cause of the file extension)
I just had a really crazy idea... no doubt I'm not the first but I havnt ready about this anywhere.
Before I go on I am NOT a programmer at all. I know nothing about that sort of thing but I was researching PCs thinking about buying a new computer and came across the HP TouchSmart PC. Basically you get a PC with a large touchscreen monitor and a full suite of aps modded to make it work well with touching the screen instead of using a mouse. Much like what we do with out phones.
Now, would it not be possible AND cool to just have a simple HTC Cube like program running on a standard PC. It would be really handy if you had a touch PC for sure but playing around on here and just using a mouse that in itself would be handy too. Being able to hold down say, the right finger mouse button and drag your mouse up quickly would bring up a cube like shortcut seen on the HTC Touch phones. Customizable of course so that it has shortcuts to whatever we would want. I can't imagine that this would be hard to do. Probably alot easier then it was to make Cube aps for other touchscreen phones. Swipping the mouse across the screen left or right could get you to other cube sides. Again, like on our phones.
This may seem completly assinine and useless but I just think it would be a cool little feature to have on a PC. I'm sure if someone who has knowledge of programming could make something like that. I dont know how difficult it would be but. Hey thats just my two cents.
I do realize that this thread isnt really about phones so it may be out of place, but the idea has come from our phones so I thought I would put it out and see what sort of responce I could get. See if anyone would be in fact interested in making something like this!
Aaron
Nice idea but i guess you're wrong here with the topic. You should ask in a PC Forum wether it's possible to do that
I understood it was the wrong forum. But seeing as pretty much anyone reading this thread would understand what the HTC Cube is, thought Id test the waters. I'm not a member or any PC Forums really either. Like I said I dont really know a thing about programming but I can assume that it's sort of like riding a bike. Whether that be a basic one speed bike compared to a 12 speed. As long as you understand the main principles (ie balance) you should be able to ride most anything. So from an ignorant understanding of programming.... well programming a application for a Windows based phone or Windows based PC would sort of be like.. comparing apples with apples no? Again.. please dont flame me here for my thoughts.. Like I said.. Ignorant understanding of the computer programming world!

Something like this?
Sorry: new software is this.
probably not helping when saying this, but the newer Ubuntu Linux distros come preinstalled with a program called Compiz-Fusion, which gives linux its cube effects. I dont know if XP or Vista has any programs out there. They probably do if you google it.
good luck to you!

Linux is the closest you will get. The XP software doesn't run nearly as well as linux because XP never really figured in workspaces where as it's completely integrated with managers like Gnome for linux. So the compiz fusion is the closest to a true cube you will get. Also, ubuntu is not the only linux distro with compiz. Any distro that can run gnome or KDE can run compiz; it's just a matter of with how much work.
To me the closest thing to a cube on the XDA phones is the cube animation in ultimate launch. But then again I love that program so I am biased
I did see that Linux based cube before but what that does is rotate to different desktops. I was thinking of a cube that is basically the same thing the HTC cube is... shortcuts. So pretty much similar to the start menu except it would be way more snazy looking and have 9 or however many shortcuts you wanted in it. 3 on each side.. you get the idea.

im thinking about switcing back to ubuntu as well, now that i know how to cook roms on it. ive also been looking at mandriva 2008.1 as well, and its easy support for wm6. ive also heard that it has the most stable compizfusion ever, which is a plus because compiz always crashes on my comp after a few days of usage.
anyway, i do believe that linuxis your best bet, althoug compiz-fusion is not very stable yet, so if you do make the switch to ubuntu, i would just make sure that you use the pre-installed effects to satisfy your needs, and not download a package caled compizconfig-settings or something like that.
as far as a shortct menu goes, im not aware of any, but i agree that it would be very convenient/cool for laptops with touchscreens...
Thanks...I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm sure there will be a slight learning curve.
u can use uBuntu (Linux)...I think it's the way, if u want to have the cube for ur dekstop...Or u can search only the transformations pack xp to ubuntu or vista to ubuntu...U can search by google...
The idea was to have a shortcut cube.... like the HTC Cube.... not a cube that rotates between different "desktops" like the linux one everyone here is discussing

I'll admit Ubuntu Linux took me a while to grasp. and with an older computer, I had to do a lot of research to get my wifi working, and the cube working as well. But now i use it almost all the time, only going back to XP on my dual-boot laptop to flash a new ROM or backup my contacts.
I've been wondering if i should check out Mandriva 2008 also. The downside of linux is that Windows Mobile is not heavily supported.

eehh.. I'm no linux expert but I'm on ubuntu, coming from mandriva 2008.1. I have to see it's not very stable
Hi peoples,
ever since I've had a WM device (first one was 2 years ago) I've used Mobile Shell. I hate TF3D as it seems to be all form and no function, where as MS has everything I need within a few clicks.
The downside to MS is the sever lack of themes (I can't help it, I like to change the way my phone looks from time to time)
So I'm thinking towards WAD instead. Has anyone else made the shift from MS to WAD? did you find it better or worse?
I like the now screen in MS and wonder if the same things is available in WAD? it's the first thing I see when I switch my phone on, number of messages, emails or missed calls, details of appointments, weather etc. it's the best screen there is. Will I be able to get a WAD theme with the same info?
thanks
I moved from MS to WAD as I don't like the lack of configuration in MS. WAD is a different matter. You can make it look like you want to. You could snapshot all the icons from MS and then import them into WAD for whatever look you want!!
Regards
Wad vs MS
Have been using Wad now on Winmo devices since it first came out. With all the effort Chris as put into WAD ver 2, I would now consider it to be the best theme software out there, a high level of functionally and with a little (or a lot, depends on what you want) of graphic work can make your device look fantastic and unique.
So yes with WAD you can have all of what you want [messages, emails or missed calls, details of appointments, weather etc] plus more on your WVGA home screen, how about battery, storage, signal meters, a two month calander, two or three time zones, weather for 1/2/3 or more days etc. It is so flexible now with multiple pages, it is up to you.
I think I may be missing something with WAD2... They offer a 14 day trial and I loaded it yesterday very excited to try MALLMAN's Vista theme and was REALLY disappointed by the sluggishness of WAD2... I did not try anything to speed it up like closing TouchFlow and my S2P/S2U2 apps... am I missing something?

I've also just got the trial..and yup..it's sluggish.
In MS I just clicked the sms icon and I'm in my inbox...with WAD i takes 5 seconds or more from the moment I wake my device from stand by to when the icon responds.
maybe it's just me but that's not really acceptable. I'm going to try a couple of themes as the basic one is awful and needs a lot of configuration to make it useable.
Yes I know that seems to contradict my first post, but here's the thing
MS works well but is a pain is the neck to customise
WAD can be customised to hell, but looks a pain in the neck to do it!!
I guess I just can't win
I've found the same thing. Touch Flow is not very friendly. MS is really quick but not very flexible. WAD2 looks great but is soooo slow.
Has anyone got any tweaks to speed up WAD2?

hi everyone,
i also tested WAD2, can feel that it is really sluggish. initially, i thinking to install this to replace touchFLO 3D, cos TF3D eat up a lot RAM. but, after i tested the WAD2 by turning off the TF3D, seems like WAD2 also slow and eat up a lot of RAM.
i tested SPB Mobile Shell 2.1.4 few weeks back, but feel it is little bit incompatible with HD. when i open some folder in my HD, it took very long time to load. any of you here feel any incompatible? or it is just my own problem?
yup..I'm starting to agree about the sluggishness. I've also experienced faster battery depletion since I installed WAD2.
There other things that have disappointed me about it too. Looks like I might have to stick with MS for now.

hi, do you feel that MS 2.1.4 is little imcompatible with HD? i have MS in my phone, but sometimes when i open the folder, it will take very long time to load.
I too installed last night WAD to test it, as i found some nice vista themes i needed to check. The default theme is way too slugish, why did they even release it in the first place?
I too installed MALLMAN's vista theme and although it is not perfect you can customize it a lot and add or remove your own items. I guess it needs a lot of search, since some windows' functions cannot be found in the lists.
The coolest and detailed theme seems to be Mobile Vista Revisited [QVGA], but as the title suggests is only qvga.
Where can i download WAD2?
Google for Wisbar Advance Desktop
Muchas gracias.
hi all,
i have noticed that u can draw with your xperia on notice programm.
but does anyone if there is a programm only to draw and paint
like the paint programm on the computer?
tanx,
urs Phoenix
You should try "Pocket Artist"
There are several that I have tried:
CE Paint
Pocket Artist
Vspainter LE
and there was one other but i can't remember the name. It was pretty dumb, so no big lose there .
where can u download it and is it for free?
I am not sure, but I think CE Paint is freeare. Just google them.
i found this yesterday in the Dev&Hacking-Thread:
[APP] Microsoft Paint on your PDA!-Thread
it's exactly the same like Microsoft Paint on your PC!
