Email attachment can't be viewed - XPERIA X1 General

Hi Guys,
My Xperia is hooked up to my company's Exchange server. Some people have been emailing me with some attachments lately and it seems that some strange things happen when I click on some attachments.
If the attachment is an image, it gets opened and I see it. That's great.
However, doc files seem to be a problem. Some just open (great), others show "downloading" (the attachment icon changes with a green bar on it), the download progress bar finishes, the icon for the attachment changes back, and then..... nothing.
This seems especially common on "docx" files and "xlsx" files. I thought these were supported by Office Mobile (in fact I thought it FORCED saving in docx etc).
Can anyone tell me what's going on? I'm getting fed up of being teased by my iPhone using colleagues
Thanks

I don't know exactly but aren't docx files the latest Office Vista files? I think my Office 2003 can't open them and maybe Office mobile can't too?

Yes, you're right. It's office 2007 format but I was specifically told that WM6.1 would handle them.
The other weird thing is that it doesn't even offer to save the attachment to the filesystem for viewing later on via a PC over USB

Press&Hold the stylus on the attachement.
It will give you menu options (with save) without opening file.
.docx is a Vista doc format.
To read it better to use 3rd party software.

I have tried pressing and holding over the attachment but I just get a blank menu - one item high - but with no text. When I select the one entry, the menu just disappears.
I'm using the Vodafone R2A ROM. Can anyone else test to see if the attachment menu works?

Hmm, it seems pressing and holding the stylus over a doc file (ie a file which opens fine) gives me a "save as", but when doing it over an "unknown" file (ie "docx"), I get a blank menu with no save as and clicking on the empty menu does nothing - so this looks like intended behaviour. Really crap imho, I should be able to save a file to the memory stick if I want, even if the phone can't do anything with it.

Yeah, strange.
In fact all the .docs should be saved as .doc. I mean .docx format is still not widely supported, so can your company just change it?
Anyway, it's better to use a 3rd party app for this...

Yeah, I'll recommend they change but it's going to be hard persuading that many people

Right....I will check soon some other software for it...

docx and xlsx ARE supported on the X1
Although you'll find most of your customers and friends don't have support for it on their machines.
You can make your phone save files as .doc by default instead of .docx by going in to Word -> Menu -> Options... -> Default template: Word 97-2003 Document (.doc)
However not sure why Exchange isn't allowing you to save the .docx or open them.

As an update, I use Seven for my push email with Gmail.
Just sent a .docx file to my phone and it was able to download and then open the file in Word Mobile.

Thank you. You've just confirmed what I had always been told (part of the reason I got an Xperia).
It's really frustrating!

Sounds like a problem with your exchange server.
I don't use one so can't really help but I have sent and received docx files to my X1 with ease.
How about trying a different email client such as flexmail (webis) it's commercial but very good and supports imap.
there's a trial available so it might be worth seeing if that works.

Can PDA-phone Do this??

Hi all,
I like to know if you can use Email-client in WM V5.0-based PDA- phone to attach photo, video in the email and send?? For the same question, can this be done on Window mobile v2002 and v2003?
your help is appreciated.
Thanks
Hi WantaMore.
Pocket outlook can handle any attachment, incoming and outgoing just like it's big brother on the PC. I don't use it much so I am not sure if it will display images in the text (I think not) but you will see an attached file, which you can view and save. This goes for 2003 and WM5 (I am only 70% sure about 2002)
Hi levenum,
Thanks. Pocket Outlook is not 100% same as PC's Outlook. Therefore, I am sure certain functions are not included.
I had asked a salesman of Pda-phone. He said that PDa-phone can not attach video file and photo file except word, excel , powerpoint files in pocket outlook to send out.
Attachment for Window mobile -based PDA only for word, excel and powerpoint files in Pocket outlook is ok.
Please if you can verify this or confirm the above. Thank you.

I agree with Rudegar. Salesman are good in selling their products but usually terrible on details, especially tech stuff. No offence to all sales person, but try asking them if you can flash the ROM and have a totally new OS on the phone. Their answer may be "Oh, no, you can't do that, you can install applications and stuff in it, but the OS is fix, just make sure your applications are meant for this OS will do. Our package also include 3 software that will help you in your time management and we also have 3 months of free phone insurance and 100 minutes talk time. Would you like to pay by credit card or cheque?"
Anyway, I don't see why IF Pocketout look can attach a file, why can't it attach a photo? For a email client to attach a file, it needs an encoder, which translate a binary file to ASCII code to be attached at the end of the email. It should works for all file type. Unless you said that it doesn't have the attachment function (e.g. missing encoder) and then it can't encode/attach anything.
YES IT CAN!!!
As per WantaMore's request I went to test this on my jamin. Not only can POUTLOOK attach a video, the camera app has a button that lets you send the video or picture directly to mail, so you don't have to save the file, exit and open the email client. While doing this I remembered that iPaq 3715 also has this functionality so the answer is YES for WM5 and 2003.
Plus like hanmin said, it doesn't really matter to the client whats in the attachment, since the basic functionality is there you can attach what ever you want!
There's just one important point: email servers are often set to block attachments with certain extensions for security reasons. For example, my company's exchange server won't allow exe or rar files. This is to prevent virus spreading. (not very efficient by the way since it still excepts zip).
Oh and as for sales people, I recently switched my cell carrier (I won't mention to which one) and the person who sold me the SIM (I went to a service center) saw the device, and I specifically told him I want internet access, yet I found out the next day, the reason I could not connect to GPRS was that my package was for WAP service. Fortunately, they immediately rectified the problem and were very curtius. Goes to show they don't always know everything they should!

Screen burnt, Almost dead XDA EXEC - help required obtaining phone contacts.

Right where do we start with this tragedy of a phone...
I basically need to retrieve my contacts from the phone, but unfortunately my screen has busted, and I can see very little of anything on the screen, I can just about decipher some words, and I basically need a way to "blindly" transfer contact details from the phone to a PC or another phone.
The methods I can think of are: Synching
I have tried an Active Synch connection but it hangs on the "Synchronising" stage. Another issue with the phone is the radio stopped working, so it was just a glorified personal organiser...So not sure if I need to enter anything on the PDA - as I can't see much of the screen.
Transfer each contact one by one:
My right hand hard key is "contacts" so I can enter my contacts screen. and therefore I know I am ON my contacts page, and I know clicking the right hand menu also gives me the context sensitive menu - but I CAN'T SEE IT, or very little, I can just about make out SOME options. So could someone go through what all the key presses would be required to either send via bluetooth - no doubt bluetooth is not on, and need to be able to "blindly" turn bluetooth on?
Or create a "Vcard"/business card? I think this is saved somewhere, which I can then access from synching and using my PC Window XP "explorer" to view the vcard from my PC. I am able to "sync" to view the folders from my PC, but not use the "Sync" to synchronise contacts, etc.
Can someone PLEASE PLEASE have a look at their XDA EXEC and figure out what key presses are required to save one contact person's details. I should be able to repeat the process for the rest.
Your patience and time is most appreciated.
Cheers,
Kasam
Edit 2: Is there a way to copy all contacts to a SIM card? I'm trying SIM Manager now, but I only seem to be able to go from SIM to phone. :/
Any ideas guys?
Another idea I had was if someone had a screen print software? And could send some print screens of the contacts menu with the options available?
Can't see how else to do this
If someone could be kind enough to contact me on abulkasam AT hotmail DOT com. most appreciated.
Can you install soft?
http://www.pocketvnc.com/projects/pocketvnc/index.php
Install that, and then try connecting to it from a VNC client on your pc...
Theoretically it should provide you full access to your pda desktop... using a window on your pc.
No guarantees here as i haven't actually tested it, just googled for Windows Mobile VNC Server
I managed to copy the PIM.VOL file over from the phone via Windows Explorer (on windows XP). So now that I have that file, can I copy it to a replacement XDA EXEC? Or does anyone know if I can open the file in any other way?
Many thanks.
Also unlikely I can "see anything" to install, unless someone can provide key presses for installation...
I can place files on to the pda through Windows pocket pc synch etc.

You will hit problems if you copy the file to another PDA. You can use an emulator to read the PIM file using XP - you will need to install some stuff though - see here:
Mobile Emulator for XP: (Or use visual studio 2005)

That emulator is pretty cool. Managed to view my contacts on the emulator, but you can't send across contacts. So found some freeware to install on to emulator that saves contacts as CSV files, html etc. However does anyone know of a way of saving all the contacts in the business card format that keeps things like the "picture" associated with contacts? It stays when you beam a file, or send it as business card in any other form. It's not available on the emulator, so any program that replicates this?
I had issues synchronising the contacts with the emulator to activesynch. I used the "cradle" which lets Activesynch see it, but then it fails on the synchronization. Does anyone have any solution?
Many thanks for all your help.

Outlook download attachments

Hi
I am new to the HTC HD2 (Leo) but i am already amazed with its potential, could someone help me with the following.
As i am using this as a work phone as well i get a lot of Excel sheets send, when i download the excel sheet to my storage card it seems to download it as .att rather then .xls
Could someone help me where i can change that download configuration?
Thank you very mcuh
Kaiser
It saves them as xls files whenever I do that.
Can you click the attachment in the email and open it there? If so, save it from within excel that way (bit long winded, but will at least allow you to save them!)
What email are you using for this? I only use hotmail and gmail (not via exchange), so I don't use exchange. It's possible (if relevant) that this may be an exchange issue.
Edit: Sorry - you're using Outlook - that answers my question. I can definitely say it doesn't happen with hotmail, so it may be the outlook client, and it may be the outlook server. I'm sure if this is a client issue then it would have been spotted before now, so someone with relevant experience will be able to advise you accordingly.
Thank you for getting back to me.
Well i open the attachment within outlook and it opens excel , but when i close it and want to open it later on i go to my storage card where i am saving my downloads to but the folder is empty , but when i check on the PC i can see the storage card does have it but as .att and i assume Excel is only can only find/look for .xls and .csv so i wondered where you can change the download settings for file extensions on the HTC HD2

Just to fulfil my curiosity, could you try saving an attachment in Location:Storage Card and Folder:None and be sure that it says Type:.xls (not that you can change that!)
When I do that, I can use file explorer to find the file in the root of my storage card. If you could try that and it doesn't work then there's definitely something funny going on!
ok i have tried the following i have downloaed a attachment and closed it found it saved it on my storage card the phone seems to have created a folder on my storage card inbox\mailattachments and i can see all my downloaded excel sheets saved as .att i renamed one to .xls and now i am able to see it when opening Excel and going to the folder strange .. still no close in knowing why it is saving as .att , maybe once i opened them the first time i have an option to save them as .xls which i doubt
strange problem bit annoying

Very strange problem indeed. You're obviously viewing files in a manner that shows you the extension, so what happens if you just change it to .xls instead of .att ?
yes i could rename them but that just annoying to always have to rename them so that i can view them at a later stage

Yeah, you're right, but it's obviously a problem somewhere. At least there's a solution for now. Maybe there's a user that has had similar issues and found a solution. Have you checked in non-Leo forums? This is a windows issue, rather than a phone-specific issue, so you may get more help there.
I really hope you've already done this, but there's an immediate suggestion from searching here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4415147
Thank you, i have just tried that and its a lot easier to tap&hold and save as rather then having to rename all the docs
I would like it to be saved auto with the .xls extensions but to be honest i am happy with this as well as i can now also save it directly into the folders i need it to be in rather then having to move them .. which was another problem for me
Thank you very much for your help really appriciated

New HD2 owner with a few teething problems, please help.

HI,
I'm new to HTC and Windows mobile having come from iphone. I have a few teething problems and could do with some assistance. I have searched the forums but can't quite find the answers I'm looking for.
I've synced my Gmail account but it won't retrieve my old mail, how do I do this?
How do I find files that I have dragged on dropped into the "my documents" folder on my phone. I've dragged a folder of documents inc. word docs, excell and pdf's but I can't find them on the phone. How do I open these files using excel etc on the phone?
How do I add personal ringtones for my contacts?
I have read somewhere on here about an issue when making/receiving calls where the screen turns back on and your ear starts pressing all sorts of buttons/apps, has there been a fix for this and where do I find it as my phone has been doing this?
Cheers
I've figured out how to add personal ringtones, so that question doesn't need answering now.
to recieve old emails on your gmail account you need to change how far back you would like mail retrieved. this option can be found like this
email tab, any email account, press inbox, press menu, press tools, press options
now choose the account you want to edit
pick send/recieve schedule
now you can amend your sync settings
to assign a ring tone to a particular contact:
press start, press contacts, pick the contact you wish to edit, press menu, press edit
now find the ringtone field and add the tone you desire
As for finding editing files you should download a file explorer, total commander is popular and free
Resco explorer is better (my opinion only as its more finger friendly) but is not free
hope some of this helps

Yes, big help, many thanks. Is it possible to set your email accounts so that everytime you go into the email it automatically checks for new mail rather than going into the menus and pressing send/receive? I've figured out how to change how often it checks for new mail, ie every 15 mins etc, but I would also like it to automatically check for new mail if I go into my emails
Does anyone know about the screen coming on whilst taking a call issue?
Having more problems with Gmail. The advice above worked for my inbox, but on my googlemail on my laptop I have different folders for different mail. I can't get these folders to sync with the HD2. I tried the same as above but no joy. Any help?
There should be an option for manage folders in that tools menu, where you can pick which folders to synce (I had to add one of my hotmail folders this way) should be the same for gmail I think.

How exactly do you drop to "my documents"? Do you drop to Computer\HD2\\\My Documents using the Windows explorer, or using other methods?
Normally you don't need to search for a file. Drop a Word document somewhere? Open Word, and File Open lists all the Word documents no matter where they are. Most applications have this type of pan-location file-open dialogue.

This is a (stupid) limitation of the WinMo file system
Pocket Office programs only look in the 1st tree branch of files on a storage card- so files in Storage Card/My Documents will be listed, but files in any My Documents subfolders won't.
Files in main memory can look one level lower (ie My Documents/Business)
So, if your files are smallish in size, you may be better to store them in main memory as long as you don't have more than one level of My Documents subfolders.
Another option would be to create a shortcut to the folder holding your files in File Explorer. Tapping file names direct from explorer opens them in the linked program.

That is a strange limitation. Perhaps they may address this issue with winmo7?
How do I create shortcuts, do I do this on the phone, or active sync on the laptop?
It's a bit of a kludge, but if you decide which folder you want to create the shortcut for, navigate to that using File Explorer on the HD2, then Tap/Hold on the folder name and select Copy from the context menu
Now navigate to My Device/Windows/Start Menu/Programs; use the keyboard to move the cursor to any item that isn't a subfolder, and then go Menu/Edit/Paste Shortcut. This will place an entry in Programs pointing to your subfolder, called 'Shortcut to...' You can rename this to remove the 'Shortcut to..' bit, or call it something more representative.
Once it's in Programs, you could then assign one of the 9 program shortcut tiles on the home page to this shortcut. Executing it will open File Explorer at your subfolder, from where you can open any of the files.

Ok so did exactly what you said and I get an error message saying
"The file "x" cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. IF the problem persists try reinstalling or restoring this file"
What do I do now?
Also how do I remove things from the start menu?
If you press the Windows hardware key, can you see your new 'shortcut' there? If you press it, do you get the same error message?
It might be that the HTC Sense shortcut can't open a folder- if so I'm a bit stuck for further ideas! You could look at a program called Launchpad . This installs itself as a program launcher and is opened by pressing the top left of the taskbar- it has a number of configurable shortcuts, which can include folders and subfolders. At $3.99 it is an excellent program, though I appreciate it is a bit rich to expect to have to pay for something that ought to be in the default OS
[Edit: I wrote a review of Launchpad Here ! ]

OK- must be a limitation of the system! Works OK with Resco File Explorer rather than the built-in one!
Might be worth a look at Launchpad- it does make life easier for a lot of program or settings launches

That's strange. I've never seen a blank sheet on excel mobile. When I start excel, it goes directly to the fileopen screen, showing me a list of xls(x) files on the device.
If you are looking at a sheet, tap OK (top right) to close it. You'll go back to the fileopen screen.

If there are no existing files for that program, Pocket Office will start with a new blank document. You only see the list once there is at least one existing file.

Don't know. Haven't seen this. I use Office 2007 and Word Mobile without problem. Except that some documents (but not all) saved by Word 2007 as DOC (ie old format) cannot be read by Word Mobile. I still haven't figured out the criteria involved.
how do you send it to your phone?
i'd guess you should check to see if it is read only. (and if it was an email attachment then it probably is read only)
can you "save as" to another filename?
i have just dragged it onto my sd card, and dragged it off to another machine and it was ok, but wont let me edit on the phone ?
I am pretty sure there is a save option in Word to ensure backward compatibility with older versions, but it is (true to Microsoft form) not the default setting for saves.
I am still using the old Word Mobile 2007 (WM6.1), because in the new 2010 version you need for selcting text always go the menu first (Edit -> select text or something like this).
I recognized in the older 2007 version that you can't select sometimes the text with the finger. Really weird. With other files you can select like butter.
I attached 2 files:
1.txt selecting works
2.txt doesn't work for me
Does anyone knows from what this depends or knows for selecting text at once in word mobile 2010 without using first the menu?
