Hi apaquette420, have read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426264 and may be I'm just being an imbecile but I can't find the shellres files it's talking about. The only thing I can find close is a file called "shellresapps.dll.0409". Is this the correct file to modify? Or am I just looking in the wrong place
Any help would be appreciated, the only thing I want to change is the Start Icon to a green Vista orb (the same as in XBmod HD Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=458788)

It's GSM and am using Resco Explorer, can only locate the following files by doing a search for shell*.*
shell32
shellcelog
shellres.192
shellres
shellres.dll.0409
shellresapps.192
shellresapps.96
shellresapps
shellresapps.dll.0409
Which one is it

GSM users need to mod the shellres.192.dll to change the start icon, so copy that file off your phone and upload it here, but you still need to find the orb you want because i can not find a download link!

its in the first post its the actual image but its white so its hard to see n um cdma

when i changed the size of the img you posted in the first post the colour changed on its own i can try again to see if i can keep it white
edit : even when i save the img it goes black, sorry your gonna need to get someone else to make it up for you.

I think I am making a meal out of this but I can't bloody copy the file lol (shellres), have tried Resco Explorer and just tried Total Commander, is there another app that can actually do what I want it to do, which is copy the file somewhere else. Once I've managed to copy the bloody thing, I can begin the search for the ORB lol.
I am tempted to forget about, as it does seem to much hassle

just get the orb and i will get the shellres file you need! soo as you find the orb upload it and i will get it working for you

Right finally managed to get the shellres.192.dll off my phone (using ROM extractor), even managed to find location of icon to be changed (292 + 293) in Resource Hacker. So far so good but I can't find the bloody green vista orb lol (pictured here http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=54514).
So sod it, can't be bothered anymore.
However just to clarify the complete process.
1. Rom Extractor - to get file
2. Unsigner - to unsign it
3. Resource Hacker - to replace the icon
4. MSsigner - to resign the file
5. Copy back to Windows directory (I bet this stage would have gone wrong as well anyway lol
Thanks for all your help apaquette420.
I may decide to give it a go when I find the elusive Vista Green Orb

Xboxmod has kindly given me the file containing the orb but can't get the Unsigner working lol.
Have uploaded my "shellres.192.dll" and the file containing the orb "shellres.192.dll.0409.mui" the orb is in position 292 in the mui file.
apaquette420 is there any chance you can take the orb from the mui file and put it in my shellres.192.dll file?

here you go man just un-zip and copy to your windows folder on your phone!!

Cheers fella, just one last problem (I promise ) as anticipated by myself lol, I can't copy the shellres.192.dll back into the Windows directory. Have tried doing it by Active Sync and by using Resco Explorer to move the file from Internal Storage to the Windows directory. I have also tried to rename the exsisting shellres.192.dll file but i'm not able to do that either lol
So for the love of GOD how the hell do you copy it back into the Windows directory? Do I need another application or something?

LOL you dont need to go that far lol!!! have you installed and of the All-In-On cab files to mod your taskbar?? the only reason i ask is the only way i was able to swap files in the windows dir was after i installed one of tsowen's task bar cabs if i just tried to swap the file before i installed the cab i could not change any files. so what i did was installed sdkcerts then one of the all in on taskbar cabs then the nue power drivers(so your batt shows the correct power state) then soft reset , then i would copy my changed files over and i was able to swap the files..
Does anyone else know how he can swap the file out with out going though all these steps????
if not try it and see how it goes just remember to do a back up with PIM or SKtools because that way you will be fine if you have to hard reset!!!
let me know how it goes. I will be out for the night, but i will check back in the morning. good luck lol

HTC Home Plugin 3 tab w/ Clock working on WM5

Hello All,
I can confirm this plugin works on WM5 (currently only verified on HTC Apache). Both the 3 and 6 tab versions are working.
3 Tab Version:
ftp://ppcgeeks:[email protected]/Apache/Misc%20Apps/htchomewm5.rar
Simple Instructions:
1. Install HTC Home Plug Today Plugin.cab to device, not storage card.
2. Install SDK Test Certs.cab to device.
3. Copy contents of PPC Phone folder to \Windows and replace existing files.
4. Reboot
If you want to use US cities, copy HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml to \Windows directory!
Enjoy!
_____________6 Tab Version_________________
This now works with the reg entry to allow you to select the order and number of tabs. The cab should set the reg for you, but you can change it to your liking. The reg entry is...
Code:
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome
Tabsetting=1,2,3,4,5,6
Unfortunately, the same install procedure is still necessary. Install cab and then copy the 4 files to \Windows. Make sure the Home plugin is deactivated when you do this or when you change the reg.
thanks to colonel and helmi @ ppcgeeks for 6 tab!
ftp://ppcgeeks:[email protected]/Apache/Users/Colonels/WM5HTCHome6Tab.rar
Inside the .rar is a cab and 4 files. Make sure you disable any HTCHome today plugin that may be running. Then install the cab. After the cab installs, it will ask you to reset. Cancel that and copy the 4 files to \Windows. Then reset.

Is anyone familiar with how to do this, or do it to a newer verion of the HTC Home plugin, either the 5 or 6 tab version?
Any help would be awesome in improving this!

Here is my GSmart i120 running WM5 AKU 3.3 and Wisbar Advance 3 beta 5!
TQ
The 3 tab version work well on my XDA IIs with xPlode Rom R5!
Works also 5 tab version?
Works great on Blue Angel!
Would love to have the 5 tab version working!
I know.. the 5 tab version working would be amazing! They are working on it over at PPCgeeks.. hoping maybe someone from here can assist in the process. The install for the 3 tab HTC home in this package is no different from other 3 tabs; what makes it work is the modified dll's in the folder in the zipped file.
As sp3dev said earlier in the other thread, they modified the htchome.dll and htchome.dll.0409.mui files. If someone can do this to match the change they made into the 5 or 6 tab version, it should work. Programmers? Anyone?
Hi, Does somebody knows why it didn't worked with my hw6945? I installed all as described but I only get an empty big square in my screen... the name of the plugin even appears on my today congifuration but I cannot make it work...
I cant figure out what files i am supposed to copy to the windows folder...Can anyone answer that question. I searched several websites but couldn't find an answer...Thank You.
Disregard the previous question. I finally found the files here...
Please help me with this, I really want to have it functioning with my Sable... please, anyone?
If you follow the instructions above and it will work. the three files that need to be copied to windows directory are htchome.dll, htchome.dll.0409.mui, and HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml. You can get these at
ftp://ppcgeeks.com/Apache/New Core OEMs/kdoweb/
The username is ppcgeeks and the password is ezupload. Its the top file. Extract the three files from that download. Follow the original instructions and overwrite those files, good idea to make backups before overwriting, and it will work. Hope this helps.
We have gotten the 6 tab version to work. However there are some strange issues with it. As you will see in the following files, the cab installs the .png files to \HTCHome instead of \Windows. This is necessary for this type of install. But, if you create an OEM for kitchen cooking, all the files can be run from \Windows. Also, we have tried to add the 4 files in the following package to the actual cab, but the cab will never install. During install, the progress completes or almost completes and then there is a message that the install was unsuccessful.
So, here is something that should work. Inside the .rar is a cab and 4 files. Make sure you disable any HTCHome today plugin that may be running. Then install the cab. After the cab installs, it will ask you to reset. Cancel that and copy the 4 files to \Windows. Then reset.
ftp://ppcgeeks:[email protected]/Apache/Users/Colonels/WM5HTCHome6Tab.rar
Hi Colonel
After I install this one (6 tab), there is not any HTC Home Today shown in my Atom.
What I have done is disable HTC 3 tabs and uninstall it.
Then, install the 6 tabs.
Copy 4 files to replace in \windows
soft reset
Perhaps try to copy all of the .png files that are in \HTCHome to \Windows so you have two copies. Like I said, this is still very raw and has some strange issues with it. Basically you might have to play around with the files. But, the 4 dlls/muis need to be in \Windows.

[SKN] Customizing the Windows Taskbar [UPDATE-26/10/2008]

As my [SKN] FInixNOver VGA Battery/Network Icons thread as become cluttered with unusable information, and it went out of the thread's range, I've decided to get it closed and create a new one with more useful information.
So now, instead of just the battery and network icons, we can discuss about all the icons on the taskbar, in a thread that was created with that purpose.
It will be divided by sections. Each section will correspond to the icons changed by each dll and/or mui file. So this means I'll have to update this, and for that I'll need your help. How? Simple! By sending me a PM when:
you have found a different dll/mui - name of the dll and which icons does it change in the taskbar;
you have made a contribution - small description, which section does it belong to and the link to the post.
NOTE:
This is not an application; it’s just aesthetics, so no extra memory will be consumed.
Whether your device is running an official ROM or a cooked ROM, it may not work until you install the sdkcerts.cab. This cab will only set your device to accept the digital signature used to sign phcanOverbmp.dll and the other modified dll’s, so the device can be able to display the icons.
Do this at your own risk! I cannot be held responsible if you brick your device. I'm just supplying information from my own and others experience.
Installing:
(using phcanOverbmp.dll as an example)
Download the cab and/or zip file you wish to use.
If you’re using the cab, just copy it to your device and run it; if you’re using the zip, you have to copy the phcanOverbmp.dll to Windows folder in your device (using a file explorer like Total Commander or Resco explorer), and import FInix VGA Battery and Network Icons.reg with a registry editor in your device (if you don't have one, you can use Dotfred taskmanager with registry editor included); in both cases you’ll have to perform a soft reset to apply the changes.
To replace a file which has already been replaced before, you'll need to follow the steps 1 and 2 of the uninstalling process (for some files you may not need to soft reset the device).
Uninstalling:
(using phcanOverbmp.dll as an example)
If you have installed from the zip, there’s a few steps you’ll have to follow to get the old icons back.
Go to Windows folder on your device and rename phcanOverbmp.dll to phcanOverbmp.dll.bak and soft reset the device.
Now you can delete the phcanOverbmp.dll.bak that is no longer being used by the device.
To finalize the uninstall process and have the old battery icon back, you have to edit the following reg entry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BatteryIconLevels"=dword:65 (hexadecimal) or 101 (decimal) -> dword:15 (hexadecimal) or 21 (decimal)
NOTE:
You can follow the steps 1 and 2 to remove any dll/mui you have customized.
To perform file operations such as renaming and/or deleting, you must use a more powerful file explorer than the built in one. You should use something like Total Commander or Resco Explorer.
There's no need to backup the files you're going to edit! Why? Because you'll be replacing ROM files, and theses files are not really replaced.
The best way to explain it is that, they will remain "hidden" under the new file. Once you delete your edited file, the original ROM file will be "unhidden". So, to have the original file, just delete your edited one.
How to make your own set of Battery Icons:
You'll need some programs, and of course, the dll.
Unsigner - to remove the digital signature from the dll.
Reshack / PE Explorer / Restorator - resource editor to extract/replace the icons inside the dll
iconFX or any other icon editor (GIMP can also handle .ico files) - to edit/create icons
Multiple file Signer - to digitally re-sign the finished dll.
How to do it?
First, remove the digital signature from the dll you’re going to edit, because the icons you’ll be replacing later can have different color depths and that will leave you with an unusable dll (meaning that you’ll not be able to re-sign it).
To unsign a file, all you have to do is drag the dll/mui file over the unsigner.exe and release it. A command window will open and close. You will know if the file has been unsigned by checking its size (it will be smaller). Also remember that the file can't be as read only or the tool will not be able to unsign it.
Then, using the resource editor extract the icons, you wish to edit, from the dll.
With the icon creator application, or by searching the web, make/get your icons.
After this, use the resource editor once again to replace the now edited icons inside the dll.
To finish, re-sign the dll using the Multiple File Signer tool.
That's it!
Before we start, here's the link to the first post on my old thread, where you can get some of the contributions already made. (I've updated the first post there)
I'll be separating them into the right sections in this thread, so, I you're one of the contributers, you can help me by checking your links in that post, and sending me a PM with the description for each link.
Thanks to you all!! And enjoy!!

The 1st rule: never change the file unless you have keep a backup of it safely.
You should use something like "ROM Extractor" to copy the hidden system file out. It's free and safe to do so.
I can tell you different version of phcanoverbmp.dll, shellres.192.dll & htcvolumecontrol.dll may not work on different version of ROM (I have tried and proved). So, one should backup his only system files before modifying those files. In case something went wrong and can't start your deveice, just hard reset it and those files will be restored automatically.
Cheers - I didn't know abour ROMExtractor - it works a treat.

...erm... you don't REALLY have to backup ROM based files. If you delete the file you "overwritten" them with, automagically, the ROM based surfaces. Didn't you know?

But I guess I can put the "untouched" files for those of you that can't extract them from the ROM (the files from an official ROM also work, so this would be another reason for not having to post them )

No screenshots because this is not specific. This topic, is not about something I made, is to help everyone in tweaking the taskbar, and unless you don't know what the taskbar is, I guess there's no need for screenshots at this point.

To perform file operations such as renaming and/or deleting, you must use a more powerful file explorer than the built in one. You should use something like Total Commander or Resco Explorer.
To unsign a file, all you have to do is drag the dll/mui file over the unsigner.exe and release it. A command window will open and close. You will know if the file has been unsigned by checking its size (it will be smaller). Also remember that the file can't be as read only or the tool will not be able to unsign it.
First post has been updated with these informations.
sms and new mail icons
Here's my latest. i found the new mail notification and sms notification file, i've put some colours in
the left one is SMS, the right one is new mail notification.
same install procedure as always.
FInixNOver: for your install procedure, you might want to add that if total commander doesn't allow you to overwrite the file in the windows folder, you should try renaming the file in the windows folder first.
Here my variant of arrival new sms.

If you're using PE Explorer, it will not allow you to replace icons with ones that have different color depths.
To achieve that you must use either Restorator or ResHack.

For battery problem - you have to edit registry and change value 21 to 101 in in HKLM\Security\... it is in the first post.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\security\ResOver\Bitmaps]

Has anybody idea, where is stored icon for missed call ? I want to change it too.

[THE] TF3D Fire Icons (Update 25th Nov - Call History & Calendar icons)

hey folks,
after some long waiting, here is the long promised fire theme
i also revisited the landscape icons to make them even better and match the new theme
****************************************************
UPDATE 25th November!
I Uploaded 2 more zip files
"Fire v2.1 (Calendar & Call History included).zip"
The same as the original version, however it included Calender and Call History
"All Files in 1 folder.zip"
This file ONLY contains the required system files. Everything is in 1 folder so that you can install it faster. Please read the "Read me.txt" included.
****************************************************
PLEASE READ ALL MY NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE INSTALLING!
Instructions:
1. Download my file and unzip it on your Storage Card on your mobile
2. Disable TF3D (Settings-Today)
3. Open Total Commander and navigate to the extracted folder
4. Right click on the manila file that you want to use (you can use the ctl button on Total Commander for multiple selection). Do NOT copy the whole folder containing the manila files; copy ONLY the manila files instead!!!!!! For extra information on the way i organized the zip file check Note 2
5. Click on copy/move. Then select the Windows directory on your phone & overwrite if prompted (Caution: your storage card might also have a windows folder. You need to select the one on your phone!)
6. Re-enable TF3D[/B].
7. Soft reset (only if it is not working yet)
8. Installing the volume control icon
(Volume bars from Prewien..I modified the colours to my needs )
Move the bmp file with Total Commander to the windows directory of your phone and then reboot
9. Red Selection in phone dial
Use a registry editor and navigate to HKLM-Software-HTC-Phone and change "highlightcolour" to 861600 in hex mode
Notes:
1. Landscape mode will NOT work on the Diamond by default (only if its modded to do so. Do not ask me how to do it, i have no idea)
2. Folder Content: The zip file contains separate folders each of which includes the files for a different mod. So for example, the folder "Fire Slider" ONLY includes the files required for the slider to work. you ONLY need to copy the manila files. I included the PNG icons in the zip just in case someone wants to mess around with them.
3. In case the icons don't work, use Diamond TF3D config-->Appearance-->Restore Default and then follow my steps.

Also updated the instructions to make them more clear

i just updated the topic
Changes: Call History and Calender icons
I also included another file for easier and quicker installation
Please refer to Post 1 for more details
LOL, I assume this will work on the Fuze? Let my dumb ass know please.

i guess so..
I am using a touch Pro myself
the only difference between the Diamond and Touch Pro, compatibilitywise is that the Diamond does not support landscape mode
New to Themes
Hi, I'm new to this forum and to pocket pc for that matter. I have'nt really installed that many apps on my phone but looking to get into it.
Your instructions seem a little cloudy to me, what is Total commander and where do I find the Windows directory on my phone.
I'm sorry if I sound newbish but.......I am.
Also, how do I do the unzipping? can I use Winrar or is there something special I need? can I do it on the phone or through the PC....
To access File Explorer in a general scenario, go to Start>Programs>File Explorer. Press the 'Up' softkey in bottom left corner of the screen, then tap the Windows folder. This is where 95% of all system files are. Don't play around with this part especially as you're new.
Total Commander is a file explorer type program with more flexibility. Just give it a search in the forum.
just a note to nuke1's post..
total commander allows you to overwrite system files..this is why you need it
of course all other file explorers that do this can be used too..
as about the icons, its just a normal zip file..use whatever you feel comfortable to unzip it
when you install total commander follow my steps above and you should be set
Windows folder --> C:/Windows
Okay I DLed total commander but I don't know how to access my windows folder on my phone. it doesn't show up on the total commander.
I've never used a zip file before (does winrar do it? I even Dled Winzip but I'm not sure if it unzips it when I select the file or do I have to make it do that.)
frustrating.....this is my first pocketpc and I thought it'd be a little easier...
Thanks for any help.
P.S. my phone doesn't show up on total commander at all.
actually its quite easy once you get the hang of it.
there are easier ways of installing stuff. Thats with .cab files. I would love to make those for everyone, but the program that makes it gives me errors in vista...
anyway here are some answers to your questions.
.zip is a compressed folder which can be created within windows (right click-->send to compressed folder). Similarly, you can extract them in windows without the use of another program.
Personally i use WinRar, as you will also find that many people use .rar files. With Winrar you will be able to extract most formats..
Anyway, once you extract the content of the zip file, you get my folder. Youcan use the instructions above to take it from there.
TOTAL COMMANDER:
here are some settings for an easy use of the program.
Click on Show and check "Full"
uncheck "hide files in ROM" too
Go to about/settings and click on single click start (this allows you to enter folders with 1 click instead of 2)
a small explanation
on top of the program you will find an adress bar. Next to it is a "\" This navigates to the root directory. the ".." is for going one folder up.
Anyway, you do not have to access the windows directory in order to use my files..what you can do is this:
Move the files in the storage card. Then press the "/" in TC and then go to storage card. Access my folder, and select the files that you want to copy (Landscape icons are only for the Touch Pro by the way. You only need to select the manila files, nothing else..) You can use the "ctl" button on TC to select multiple files one by one
Once you selected everything, long press on one of them to bring the popup menu
Copy/Move
Click on Tree
** clicking on a + opens a subtree, - closes it. Subtrees are more inclined to the right. The very top one "/" is the root directory..When you open it you get subdirectories (Like Application Data, ConnMgr, Content,.....Storage Card, Temp, Windows)
Select that Windows one and click on OK
Then click on Move...That should do it
I know this post might be a bit messy but hopefully you get an idea of what you have to do.
Tell me if something is unclear
Wow ! Nice job ! Found my new icon set
That was a very good explanation. I'm somewhat familiar with how to use the windows system, it's just that I've never reallly ever run into any zip files before. (probably because I use Winrar and it takes care of all the unzipping without me even knowing it.) Also I've installed programs on my phone before and I usually ran into cab files for instalation so this was a lil different than what I new
Again thank you very much
I can't find the option "hide Rom" on total commander to uncheck so I still can't see my phone files on my computer. Furthermore when I try to just copy and paste them in my phone I get an error message saying "check system memory and/or ROM is protected" when I select to overwrite the files. I know that I have enough memory for these files (about 134mb) so itmust be the later.
what can I do to have my windows folder from my phone shop up on Total Commander?
hmm sounds weird..even the normal file explorer should show the windows directory :s
anyway, from your pc you should copy on the mem card not in any windows foldr on your phone. otherwise you will get an error..
if i have time today i will try making a cab on another pc and see what happens
can you tell me in detail what you did?
I extracted the file from my computer to my memory card with winrar. It showed up on my phone as a folder not a zip file so I'm assuming that's good. I tried copy/paste and cut/paste the manila files (only) from inside the folder of my mem card to the Windows folder of my phone memory. everything but the the extraction to my phone was done on my phone since I couldn't use total commander to copy/move. when I tried to paste the error message was given.
Thanks again...

[SOLVED]How to set a start menu location for an added package?

Hi, I'm trying to cook Scilor's groovemobile into my rom (I have permission done worry) and so I made it into a package the usual way (cab to oem - ext package rebuilder) but I cant find anywhere which specifies what location it goes too.. (as in startmenu\multimedia or %CE11%)
Is there a way to set its location?
Thanks

It doesnt even create a .dat or .provxml file, it just creates a sub folder (files) with the contents of the .cab in
So gimme a screenshot from opened CAB. (like below image). I should know about default installation destination.

Ok, I downloaded it's CAB and looked at it. It doesn't need to be in extra folder (like \Program File\Groove\), So you can run it in \Windows folder as default. But as you say, you need to have a shortcut in start menu. I attached a .LNK and .DAT file to this post to add it's shortcut to start menu. (note: it's default is Start Menu>Multimedia, if you don't this you can change it in DAT file easily).
Structure:

He Star,
I think I can help you with this question as well, at least I will try.
Do a search in your kitchen to initflashfiles.dat
If you found it open it with a text editor.
Two very good ones I like to recommend for this you can find in Hilaireg's Kitchen Utils here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=651026
Now if you opened it have a good look at the start menu hierarchy.
Do a search in initflashfiles.dat with the text editor for 'start menu' and you know what I mean.
You want to specify a path for your package shortcut on a location in your start menu isn't?
Don't close initflashfiles.dat yet.
Go into the package you want to create the start menu location for and first find the shortcut so you know the name.
Next you need to create a app.dat in the root of the package (if it doesn't exist already), to do this just create a new tekst document (right klick on a empty area and choose new\tekst document) and change the name to app.dat
Open your newly created app.dat with the same editor as you opened initflashfiles.dat
Next take the initflashfiles.dat as a sample and create the path for the shortcut according where you want to have it in your app.dat.
For example:
start menu\Programs\Tools\yourapp.lnk
Offcourse you can also specify a path to the shortcut like Teal is mentioning with a provxml but I just wanted you to know this one as well.
Hope it helps.

The shortcut itself is not ok.
@Star,
Open the shortcut with the editor I suggested 'Editpadlite' and you will see this line:
67#"\Windows\SciLor's GrooveMobile.exe"
This isn't correct, it should be like this:
37#"\Windows\SciLor's GrooveMobile.exe"
You need to count the characters after '#' beginning with one.
In this case 37.

Yeah I still am getting an error :s 'DirectoryNotFoundException' and then loads of stuff I dont know what do do :S will this be my fault or something to do with the cab
Looking at the xml included I notice now it creates a directory in the root with the name 'SciLor's GrooveMobile'.
I tried to make a app.reg from the xml but it doesn't work.
Do you have the cab so I can make a package for you myself?
The XML looks messy.
Edit; I've found the cab and will play with it.
Meanwhile a tip for you, install the cab and check directory, the shortcut you can copy from device and use in your package.
The shortcut itself you need to redirect to that dir instead of Windows or change all path of the files in the XML.

[SOLVED] Include .cabs in ROM?

I'm trying to include a newer Google Maps and a few other applications and converted the .cab installers to EXT in osKitchen. They get included in the list in EXT Packages and I select all of them but still I cant find them when I have flashed my ROM to my device.

Double check that they are in the windows folder. All you should have to do is check the package.

Thanks! Havent tried the new rom yet but the paths in app.dat was wrong.
But I do have to change the path to the programs folder too, I guess?
When I check the path in file explorer it says \Program and in app.dat it says \Program Files.
If you use cab 2 oem and oem 2 ext the app.dat is automatic created with the correct path.
So if you use a WWE package it will be 'Program files' and for the shortcut 'start menu'. If you use another language (Dutch for example) 'program files' has another name 'programma bestanden' and 'start menu' becomes 'startmenu' in Dutch.
So you need to correct that path according to the language you use.
You can use initflashfiles.dat as an example for every language you use.

One of my cabs is actually a today screen plugin. How do I choose what plugins which should be selected from start?
Hmm the program files gets into the correct folder and a link is created in the start menu, but the link doesnt start the program. I guess it's still pointing to the wrong path.
How do I fix this?

Just edit the shortcut; total commander works well.

Today items you enable/disabled like the sample of registry below.
1 is enabled and 0 is disabled.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\HTC Sense]
"Enabled"=dword:1

Thanks! But the plugin doesnt even show up in plugin list when I pre-install it in the ROM. The plugin is TodayAgenda. Do I need to do something more when adding today screen plugins?

Just edit the shortcut and then swap the new one into your package for the bad one. Although this whole topic is confusing. Are you trying to install cabs during customization, or are you trying to make actual packages from cabs? If it's the former, then you'll need to edit the .cab file to fix the shortcuts (if they are the problem).

I want to be able to select which programs I want to include in the ROM. How it gets included doesnt matter (I think?).
What's the difference between installing them during customization and making packages?
I found the bad shortcuts now, thanks, so I guess that problem is solved now. But please tell me the difference between customization installing and packages. I want to do it the correct way
There are different ways to include apps into a rom. Installing a cab during customization isn't a whole lot different then just installing a cab normally. There's nothing really special about it, except that the cab file is stored in rom. This could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. You don't get any of the benefits of cooking an app into rom when you use cab files.
Creating a package means extracting the files (and reg keys, if there are any) from the cab file and then cooking them directly into the rom. In many cases, you can re-locate the application directly into the \windows folder (from \program files), and this saves space and shortens the time for first boot. You may also be able to convert some of the files to modules, which can increase performance (mainly, the apps boot up faster), but it doesn't always work. Modules can also save a bit of ram by loading code into the page pool. As an example, you can create a package with TCPMP (core player) that loads all of the files directly into the rom. This is much better than having the files in their own folder in \program files\tcpmp, because you don't end up having duplicate files in \windows (if you use an app.dat to copy the files into the program file directory) or one big cab file sitting in \windows. It saves on storage. Also, some of the .dll's and the .exe can be made into modules.
On the other hand, some apps just don't work if the files aren't placed in the proper directory. I've had a bugger of a time getting the new resco keyboard to work properly. Most of the time, you can just move files and sub-folders from program files straight into \windows, but it doesn't work with resco keyboard. The bloody skin files have to be located in \program files\resco keyboard pro\skins (the same goes for the language and sound files). It's not a big deal, but I could save a bit of space if I could locate some of the files in \windows. I get these files into the program files directory by unzipping a zip file with a mortscript during customization. Zips are easier to edit than cabs, and install faster, so that's what I prefer to use. You also don't have to bother with uninstall info (I always seem to leave that crap in when I pack a cab, even though it's pretty much useless to me).
Customization is the step after the screen alignment. It's basically the time when you pretty up your rom, and put in the final touches so that when the phone is fully booted up, it's just the way you want it.
Your post is just kind of unclear. It sounds like you're just trying to install cabs during customization, but some people are telling you how to extract cabs to make EXT's. I'm not really sure what you're asking.

What I'm doing now is definitly makeing EXT's. But that doesnt mean I'm sure that it is what I want to do. I just want to include some programs in the ROM from the beginning and EXT's seems like a good way to go.
But if I want to install cabs during customization, how do I do that?
You create an EXT:
Sample:
Yourpackage\
Yourpackage\files\your cab
And you add a line to config.txt so it will be autoinstalled during device setup.
A sample of that line:
CAB: \Windows\your_app.cab

Where should this config.txt be? Yourpackage\config.txt?
And can I add an app.reg to this EXT so I get some settings installed too? Will these settings be applied before or after the cab-install?
