Just a quick question since I cannot find a definative answer anywhere - not sure if there even is one...
When does the heat generated by a mobile device which is connected to wifi become a concern? I'm using my HD to listen to internet based radio more frequently recently, and was wondering is there any likelyhood of long term damage by leaving it connected, say, overnight?
I've never seen any warnings or guidelines about how long is safe continuous use is, so I presume you could stay connected as long as you like?
as it says here:
http://www.htc.com/sea/faqs.aspx?p_id=179&cat=90&id=52198
not a problem

Wifi drains the battery very fast and produces lots of heat, this two factors combined reduce the life of your battery, there are programs that show you the temperature of your HD battery, you shouldn't use your device above 35ºC.
There are also problems while using WiFi and recharging at the same time, this can overheat your device, I recomend recharging while the device is on standby.

Can anybody tell me how strong a drain on the battery Bluetooth will have if it's simply left on but not being used? I usually just leave Bluetooth on all the time even if I don't have my headset with me...will this kill the battery? Everything I've read in the past indicates that Bluetooth in this state isn't much of a battery drain at all.
Thanks!
Not By me.
I have BT on all the time and go throught two full days of usage.

I've always made a lot of thorough battery consumption tests. In new(er) HTC devices, BT battery drain has been a non-issue.
Please also see my articles - I've published a LOT of info on all these (and similar) q's.
Thanks Menneisyys!
Also no problem here.
I also use A2DP alot when at work and usually still don't need to charge the device at all. Sometimes it will sit in it's sync cradle and get a extra battery life but I'm usually not at my desk long. If you were to leave it on discovery mode it will use a little extra but the BT chips nowadays are excellent for minimal battery consumtion/power drain.
I also use a BT carkit which I guess I'm connected to for about 1 hour each day and still see no major battery drop. My old JasJar used to have to be charged upto twice a day with all the above use.
I've had the TyTN now for over 1 month and never had to shut it down due to low battery.

Let me disagree. I've also thoroughly tested this and found no difference. (See my power & battery consumption-related articles.)
That is, you can safely leave BT discoverability on.
Let me repeat that again,
"it will use a little extra" not LOADS extra but a little. I'm pretty sure of that but I agree with you that you will probably not see much difference in general use, just thought I'd mention it.
Just think though - you will be broadcasting/transmitting BT identity information when in discovery mode which you were not when discovery was off.

I think WMWiFiRouter caused my battery to stop working, permanently. I know, that sounds crazy, right? Here's what happened...
o I plugged the phone into a wall charger.
o I set up WMWiFiRouter on my Hermes. It worked perfectly... I just had to turn on DHCP Allocator.
o I connected two laptops to it, doing basic web browsing.
o I ran a ping running constantly, and every once in a while, the ping to the 'net would fail... resetting the IP address on my laptop always fixed it.
o After several hours of using it like this, the connection died. I went to the phone, and it was off, and had a red LED light lit. It would not turn on at all. The phone, while not scorching, was hotter than I've ever experienced before.
o The battery I was using was an extended battery. It no longer works. I've used this battery exclusively for almost a year, and have never had a single issue with it.
o I tried the original phone battery, and it worked fine.
So, the phone is fine, but the battery is dead. I'm not suggesting that WMWiFiRouter has a software problem of any kind. But I'm betting the strain of using WiFi and 3G at the same time for extended periods was too much for the phone, causing more heat than usual, indicating the battery was working too hard. So, I wouldn't tell anyone not to use WMWiFi, but be careful. I'm afraid to use it again, and yet I might take my chances anyway, because it's so darn useful .

maybe thats why there are not more programs like it
with batt limits
and latency when i routes i'm sure
it not a good replacement for a usbWifi card and a wifi Router
How long ago did the other battery die? You may want to try it again a day later or so.
Yes, the devices take a lot power using WiFi full time and so obviously the device will get hot, which they don't like. How hot they get is device specific though, doesn't seem too bad with my Kaiser. One guy has claimed running it continuesly for a month without issue.
So short version: maybe
You are right! I just tried it after a couple of days, and the extended battery does indeed work again! How did you know that ?
Probably the battery just overheated and got a chemical imbalance due to it... often settles down if you leave it alone a bit. Happens with all kinds of batteries, not just phone batteries

Try using a stock battery, you may find that it will work OK.
Most lithium batteries have some form of resettable thermal trip within them to prevent fire/explosion due to catastophic discharge. It will reset after a time depending on how hot the battery got and how fast it can cool down (better out of the phone). If you have noticed the stock battery, it has a metal plate to try to act as a simple heatsink/spreader. Third party batteries don't usually have this and thus suffer more from overheat.
The ones that you have heard of from laptops that go 'BLEWIE!!' are usually due to faulty manufacture causing an internal breakdown of isolation layers and subsequently an internal short by one or more cells not covered by the thermal trip.

Don't the new modern cellular batteries have on-board processors that are supposed to regulate the power, and shut the battery down to prevent damage from overcharging or severe drain? Maybe the aftermarket battery you used had a defective or mismatched processor for the battery.

I love playing/streaming music through tcpmp while at work. Only problem is that after about a couple of hours of streaming music the kaiser will just shut down all the way down. the first time scared the hell out of me. But I had read the WHOLE wiki on lithium batteries so I quickly calmed down and hoped that it was the battery's safety circuitry causeing the abrupt stoppage. My kaiser also wears a clear case, which looks great and restricts very little when using the keyboard but sadly it works as a great insulator along with the rubber, grippy battery cover of the kaiser's. So double insulation is causing the failure but I don't want my kaiser unprotected either.
I have got some plans on rigging up a heatsink apparatus that will extend past the case or replace the restrictive case and the clear case as well. Another reason to find or build an effective sink would be to preserve the battery's life. Supposedly heat is the quickiest way to kill a lithium battery. Now thinking about it I could probably do without the pain in the a$$ to get off back cover all together. as long as the battery sat in its cavity snuggly enough. I'm thinking a few layers of aluminum screening soldered or glued to together would make a fine heatsink. if done neatly would probably look like carbon fiber! Hopefully a good Hsink can be sold by a third party but I doubt it since extreme computing/heating since to be a new issue.
OBTW, WMWiFi makes a great hand warming program when its cold outside!

Hey guys,
First of, YES I USED THE SEARCH FUNCTION .
My battery life is absolute horrid right now, and I tried everything.
I tried out different roms, every radio, deleting programs, hard resetting tons of times. I even bought a new 1500 mAh battery but it was still crap.
Battery log says my device in standby mode with the screen turned of uses -70ma, when I turn my screen up it jumps to -320ma, and when idle on the screen for a few sec it goes to -200 ma, but when I browse through stuff again it goes to 3xxma again. When I surf on the internet it picks up to 450-500ma.
Now, this morning with the 1500 mAh battery fully charged I played a few games of XTRAKT, few texts, 1 hour of music listening and 10 minutes of being on Opera through a HSDPA connection. It was down to 45%.
This isn't the normal rate the battery goes down at right?
I use HDtweak to manage my connection and put it off after a minute so it isn't that I keep dataconnections open. I never use bluetooth or wifi either.
Could it possibly be that it's the charger of the device? I perhaps have the feeling that it doesn't put enough juice into the battery even though the green light led goes on to indicate it's full.
Some feedback would be much appreciated cause it's put me on the edge of selling my device, which would be a shame cause I'm really fond of it (except the battery ofcourse ).
Thanks in advance!

P.s. I am from a pda background, so it isn't that I'm expecting too much of the device or comparing it to a normal cell.
May I ask what you searched, as there are 3 or 4 active threads on battery drain right now?
Hi
Had same problem.
Try to browse a storage card if its very slow You must format it and it will back to normal.
very strange but its working.
Cheers

General battery drain yes, not the possible issue of a charger though. If I'm wrong I stand corrected. .

I'll try this, I have noticed that today my storage card won't be read by my computer, so perhaps this is a fix for the lousy battery issue.

Hi Antrak,
Touch HD has the longest battery life of any similar 'phone. See e.g.
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/1...-the-rest.aspx.
Either your battery is not charging correctly, as you say (try it via the PC USB cord?), or you have two dud batteries in a row (very unlikely) or you have a bug in your m/board. 70mA in standby is too high. It should be <20mA with only the 'phone on in standby mode, providing you are not moving from one cell to another all the time, and have decent signal.
One other suggestion. Drain the battery completely to zero, then recharge it to max. This should reset the internal battery meter. But don't do this too often, as it ages the battery faster.
If none of these work, return the 'phone for a m/board replacement undere guarantee.
I have the same problem... After charging for 10 hours, my batt shows 55% only.. and last 1hr on STANDbY!!!
IMAGINE! charge for 10hrs juz to get to use for 1 hr.. im disappointed by the batt.. im not sure if HTC is gona let me exchange with a new one or do I have to buy a new batt..
try check your sync..its active all the time or not..
if yes..
find the threat to make a fake account for sync, so you can active it manually.
so your battery will stand more longer,
about charging..
me also facing the same problem..
need to change it more longer to get full battery,
but
if i change in my car,
no issue
very fast
i thing charger issue..
but i bought original set..
??????????????????
Okay I've charged my HD through my pc with a USB cable and formatted my SD card like a other user said. Gonna see how it holds out today. It could very well be that some chargers have issues.
My experience with the Touch HD says that when charged with a USB attached to a computer the battery life is a lot shorter than charged through a wall socket.

This is always going to be the case. Quickest way to charge your device will always be through your wall socket and with your device turned off!!
Same battery issue.
i recently purchased a new touch HD (T8285 telstra version) and am experiencing the same horrible battery issues. it takes more time to charge it, than i get use out of it.
i've tried multiple batteries, and am in the process of trying different ROMs.

Indeed, here's an illustration...
Image1:
Charging via USB takes longer. Consumption and therefore charge current is erratic after the battery level reaches 50% when charging via USB on my HD. So the battery fills up to about 60% of its capacity by the time when the battery level is reported to be 100% and charging stops.
Image2:
When charging with an AC adapter this is not happening and the capacity is fully utilized. This is also quicker.

That's strange. For me it's quicker if the device is turned on. When it's off it takes around 8-10 hours to charge but when it's on it's alot quicker.

hmmm, I don't know how this is possible?
If your device is on there is always power outage especially with programmes running, whilst if your device is off, there is no power drainage so device should charge quicker.
What rom are you using? software installed?

Latest official rom with alot of software installed. But it doens't make sence to me either. It's logical for something to charge faster when it's using no power (off) then when it is using power (on).
Combine battery threads ???
Hi to Moderators,
There are now several threads on the HD forum on battery and charging issues.
Can these be combined into one place and stickied, so we can get a clear picture?
Current threads are this one, plus:

I have a gut feeling from what I'm reading, that HTC have had a bad batch of batteries or charger circuits in the HD - in which case the best starting point is to call their service points and ask for help/replacement, instead of spending lots of time on other remedies. The symptoms described have lots of commonalities, and the HD is normally an excellent beastie for battery usage.
Thanks for all your help, ladies and gents! Your work is much appreciated.

Heya,
Don't know what it is but my battery life increased a tad. Am running Dutty's X3.0 with the 1.32.x.x. radio. Watching a 1 hour xvid dvd rip (no conversion) in coreplayer on full backlight with no HSDPA on, wifi or bluetooth takes away 20% of my battery, which is acceptable.
Don't think it's the SD card format though, it might be that I never have the activesync process on anymore by setting it to manual update and closing it (it otherwise keeps running.)

Guys,
I have my data connections on 24/7 to pull/push emails etc. I have HD Tweak which can enable me to disconnect the Data Connection after a certain period of time. However i'm pretty sure last time I did this it caused issues with SMS/MMS over that connection...(i seem to recall a warning against that setting in HD Tweak also) - What i'm asking is a) does anyone use this disconnect option and what are your experiences b) what else can I use and c) should I be experiencing high drain if it's on 24/7?
How can I ascertain the battery drain of my device?

My HD is also connected 24/7 for push mail,it is normal for the battery to drain more rapidly when you are connected 24/7.I disabled HSDPA and BEAM,that made my battery last a bit longer.

Why disable HSDPA? That's what I use mostly to grab mail....unless I'm not in an HSDPA zone.
you can easily track your battery discharge with little but awesome app BattLog 0.2.3.130 (search forum to find instalation cab)... u can save and compare logs taken with or without data connection, result which i would be interested to look at myself.
i'm also using data connection24/7 and if i do not use phone at all battery would last 1.5 to 2 days, but as soon as i start using web battery hardly can last a day.
i bought my phone in june and i was little bit angry to see, that the battery lasts only one day by normal using it without bt, wlan and gps only sometimes internet and phone. i went to my vendor and it was sent to htc 3 times to get it repaired back, but it still exists the battery problem. now i read, that some roms are less battery catcher than other. which rom is good for saaving battery life.
thank you very much or are there other tricks to improve battery life.

TC,
Are you using stock ROM or..? I've not change my phone's ROM yet and even until today, I get 3 days worth of normal usage (I charge my phone at about 20 ~ 35% range depending). I don't use it much for anything except being a phone, occasional web surfer, and very very importantly, an organizer/calender.
Also, do you leave applications running in the background? Do you close all of em? What is your brightness setting? How long does it take for your phone to dim the screen? Since I don't really care for 3G and HSDPA (couldn't even if I could), did you set it to GSM only? Do you turn off your phone module in signals with very low bars?
My point is, a lot of factors can affect battery drain, I hope the questions I've asked might help you better pinpoint what the problem seem to be. I wouldn't be surprised if the drain is due to the phone being in a constant 0 ~ 2 bar zone.
Cheers.
hello ,
thanks for writing back so fast
no i didn´t change or updated my rom with any roms which are able to be downloaded here. my phone was updatet when i brought it for analyzing in the htc shop.
i charge it always when it has nearly nothing anymore.
i use it for the same reasons you need. i use 3g because it was written, that gsm uses more battery than 3g
i always push down programs in the background only activesync is not easy to close
...... Do you turn off your phone module in signals with very low bars?
that i don´t know what you mean by "in signals with very low bars"
i also use mort player an windows player and by using these programs the battery drains a lot
thanks
