I will be buying an XDA 2 of my friend 2moro and
I would like to know if I can use an O2 Pay as you
go genie sim (genie is the sim where you get free txt msgs etc)
Can i just pop the sim straight in and use it or will I have to unlock it??
Hi advent
I'm sure you can...
As long as the SIM is GSM and the phone is unlocked you can use any GSM SIM Card...
In this case, since it's going to be from O2 there would be no problem.

What does the author meant by SIM Free? Isn't it just taking the SIM out considered as SIM free?
removing simlock so any providers simcard can be inserted without the problem that the universal blocks the sim
for example: my mda pro is locked to t-mobile. if i insert an o2 simcard i cant use the phone function, it only works with t-mobile simcards.
with this unlock i can use any providers simcard i would want to

Do you mean it is blocked in the UK? Did you get it as a second hand?
No, its new. it isnt blocked, its locked for vodafone uk network, but is sim unlocked.
Yep, that's what this is all about. It's not really to remove the SIMLock, but more specifically a NETlock which locks the device to a specific provider/network.
Or probably both, but I don't know if there is even any SIM-locked Universal out there. I think if the Universal comes with a lock it is generally a NETlock AFAIK.
SIMlock is usally used for chreaper prepaid bundles and NETlock for higher priced but branded devices.
Hi,
I've bought a HTC Magic from Rogers. From the internet, it seems that some ppl were saying Rogers did not lock any smartphone, but most said it does.
I've tested with my wife's Fido Pay-As-You-Go SIM card, it seems to work. So either my phone is unlocked or Rogers and that Fido prepaid card are sharing the same lock-code.
Anyhow, without any other tools, how can I tell/test if my phone is simlocked or not?
Thanks,
Gary
The Rogers phones are locked. Fido, PetroCan Mobility and Speak Out are all virtual network operators that run on the Rogers network so their SIM's will work in a locked Rogers phone.
You need a non-Rogers SIM (like from a new Bell or Telus phone) or a US or European SIM. As soon as you pop it in it will tell you your locked and will ask you for the unlock code.
Phone won't run home screen but instead will ask for "unlock code".
And unless you give it you can't use the phone for anything (you can't even check any menu, settings or anything).
I've got an HTC HD2 Virgin branded from Ebay, It said that it is unlocked. Tried it on T-mobile, O2 and Vodafone.
Only worked on T-Mobile.
When I put O2 or Vodafone sim card, it can't even connect to the network.
Is my device locked??? Or is it faulty? Please help
sounds like its still network locked to me. virgin piggy back on the tmo network I believe, maybe that's why tmo works?
(just thinking out loud)
but the phone didn't ask for unlock code even when i put different sim card?
Hello everyone. I recently moved overseas and I'm new to the GSM market. I purchased a HTC Magic from a friend who says that it's SIM Unlocked. I've been using it in Italy (where I currently am now) with no problems, but soon I will be moving to Turkey. I would really like to know if there is some way to tell if the phone is unlocked before I go to Turkey to make sure I don't have any downtime. If I go to Wireless & Networks/Mobile Networks/Network operators, I can see other local networks, but can't select them because I'm assuming the SIM I have will only work with one provider.
I've done some searching, but didn't see any answers for the Magic specifically.
Anyways, is there anyway to tell if this phone is unlocked?
Thanks in advance.
Put in a sim from a different provider (borrow from a friend?) And if it works then it's unlocked
