CONFIRMED: VIDEO-CALL working on USA X1A - XPERIA X1 General

Sorry I wasn't able to test this earlier, but I had a chance today and video-called some friends with my USA X1A
It seems to be a sotfware limitation, not hardware
YES NOW I can positively 100 percent CONFIRM THE USA X1A IS VIDEO-CALL ENABLED
I flashed my USA X1A with the UK ROM and the LAM ROM and I both enabled videocall - cool

X1a Prototype???

Can anyone tell me if there truly was an X1a protoype or if all prototypes were X1is?
x1a is the european version where the X1i is for American users.
must have something to do with fcc rules

Actually that is backwards. The X1a is for American users and the X1i is for European users. There were some hardware changes if i'm not mistaken because of a broadcom part or something like that.
hmk,
isnt the UMTS Frequency different for the american users? i remember people complaing about non working UMTS in the USA cause they bought a EU one.
and i also remembered that FCC aprooved the X1 bout a month or two later
Yes there is a difference in UMTS frequency bands. The X1i has 900/1900/2100 i believe and the X1a has 850/1900 and there is a third one but i can't remember what it is. People who bought the X1i and are in an area in the US where they only have 850 can't get 3G.
Thanks guys for the input but I am looking for information if a Sony X1 prototype could be the X1a or the X1i. I have a friend that has a prototype I could acquire but I am not sure if I want to wait on the X1a when it finally ships or get his prototype. The phone has no distinguishing markings to state it is a X1a or i. It picks up ATT 3g fine here in Atlanta but I beleive we are almost all 1900mhz. Just trying to find out the best way to tell if it is an a or i. Thanks.
I've never heard of an X1a prototype but i can't say its impossible. My X1i says X1i in the device information in the identity tab. I'm not sure if the X1a says "X1a" or something else.

This phone says "Prototype" where the others list X1a or X1i.
does it have the original rom?
Not sure but I could see if he will check. I may not see him for a few days though. I am now assuming it is a X1i as I learned his brother works for SE in Sweden and sent it to him for testing.

X1a or X1i...which is better? and whats the difference..?

i did use the search button, but everytime i click on it i get an error saying Page Cannot Be Displayed so i dont know whats goin on, but i just wnat to know what is the difference between the X1a and X1i and want to know which one of them is better? Please let me know guys, and sorry about the search...i did try
X1i = interesting
X1a = awesome
You didn't search, Google it!
x1i == 3g but not with 850umts band and record at 640_480 30fps
x1a == 3g with 850umts but think it's lacking support for some the umts bands used outside America and can't record 640_480 at 30fps
I picked up an X1i myself due to the 30fps recording.
X1a: UMTS 850/1900/2100 MHz (15fps video recording - lowered due to patent infringements)
X1i: UMTS 900/1900/2100 MHz (30fps video recording)
If you're a a North American using an 850MHz provider (such as AT&T), go the X1a, if you're in Australia, go the X1a (for Telstra/3 customers) and the X1i (for Optus/Vodafone/Virgin/etc customers), if you're in Europe go the X1i.
I'm not sure about Asia though, sorry.
I got the X1a because of Telstra's 3G network using the 850MHz band.
I was wondering if some one could help me please. I read in the above thread to buy the X1a if on telstra/3 but 3 have just released the X1i. Now i was just about to buy an X1a because 3 are launching the mega 3g soon which allows 3g on telstras umts 850 band (of which the x1i doesnt have).
The question i have is if i buy a X1a can i configure it to run all of the 3 networks stuff (net, mms, planet 3) or will i be stuck buying an X1i and missing out on the extra coverage that mega 3g will be offering. (which really isnt an option for me)
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Jamin
I have an X1i myself and I must say the videos are very good
X1i also support 850 band..?
I have X1i, and according to the phone settings, it supports both UMTS bands, 850/1900 and 900/2100..
I have no problems whatsoever using UMTS with my provider, telenor, will try to check which band they use..

I think the general consensus is that provided there's plenty of light, the videos are good. Once the ambient light starts to drop, it's as if the camera is hardware/driver level coded to increase the exposure to make the most of what light is there. Unfortunately this leads to motion blurring.

hmmm so do i, GSM 850/900/1800/1900 & UMTS EU1/US2/EU8
manufactured 09W08
in my opinion the x1i is better
You guys do realize that the hardware's the same and its just the ROM that changes, right?
Just get any X1 and check out both ROMs and see which one you like better / if you have compatibility issues with your carrier.

Sorry, but that is plain wrong !!
This issue has been posted many times:
the X1i is not capable of UMTS 850Mhz reception. It uses the Qualcomm 7200 CPU and has a hardware filter to prevent reception on UMTS 850Mhz (patent infringement issue). The video recording rate is uncrippled
the X1a uses Qualcomm 7201A CPU and can receive the UMTS 850Mhz frequency (Canada, USA, Aus, S Americas, S Africa etc). Video recording rate is crippled (patent infringement issue)
SE had separate factory assembly runs for the X1i and X1a to ensure this situation actually prevailed.
The X1i does list the UMTS 850Mhz frequency in the phone bands but the device does not receive this frequency. Changing ROM's does not alter the hardware limitations.
The retail price difference between the X1i and X1a is up to 50% higher for the X1a. This seems to be for the purpose of paying Qualcomm royalties to Broadcomm for the patent infringement.
I guess I really f....d up this time, haven't I?
Sorry for that then. I had a friend that bought an X1i here and went to the US changed the ROM and worked perfectly... I guess the carrier must have been using something other than 850 Mhz...
Oh well...I apologize for talking out of my ass...
Will do more research before stating something I'm not 100% sure of

x1i does not support the same 3g bands as the x1a.
The x1i is "better" because it has a better video camera, but if it doesn't work with your carrier's 3g bands then it doesn't really matter.
I am almost positive the x1i does NOT support 850/1900/2100 for 3g.

Just on a slightly seperate topics.. if 2 factory assemble both x1a and x1i, why is most silver ones which are both x1i and mostly x1a in aust have cracking issues? must have been the materials itself then..
while on the topic of the bands.. does 3 has 850 band yet? if so i can give a try on my x1i to see if it does have 850 band or not.. Optus dont use it btw..

The colour, black or silver, is irrelevant to the UMTS frequency capability. The cracked case issue is likely to be related to early production run issues, but we'll never know for certain, I think.
Which carrier is also irrelevant - the X1i will not receive UMTS 850Mhz irrespective of who broadcasts it. I have no clue about 3 except that because this small carrier is city-centred, it is most unlikely to broadcast on the UMTS 850Mhz frequency ... this low frequency high-wavelength broadcast is used in regional areas for distance penetration.
Optus uses UMTS 900Mhz, which the X1i should receive (it is "tuned" for 900, 1900, 2100Mhz), and which is OK for distance as well. But Optus' regional coverage is woeful, both for GSM and UMTS. Suits if you never much leave the city areas, of course.

Xperia X1 in canada

I'm looking at getting myself a used Xperia X1, and I've seen both X1a and X1i for sale in my area.
Not being very sure what frequencies Rogers and Fido have in canada (and how the corresponding technologies affect the different receptions of the phone) , I was just wondering what the difference will be between theX1i and the X1a in therms of connectivity(or speeds?).
x1a don't do 30fps vga recording
x1i don't do 3g Internet on the usa networks
not sure about canada
so recording and frequencies are the only difference
Xperia in Canada
The Xperia that works in Canada is the X1a. The X1i is not compatible with Rogers & Fido 3G/3.5G.
I believe also the Rogers and or Fido, may be carying the X1 in the near future from what I have heard.
careful
you'll have to get the x1a for canada due to the missing 850 band for 3g
good news is that rogers recently upgraded their network.
second good news is though the x1a doesnt have as good video recording, however, as of this week, that can be upgraded. (just found out on google news) lol
rogers MIGHT be getting the x1 but still not comfirmed yet. and better yet, sony stores in the states. over sales in the states for x1 hasnt been doing too great. from what i've heard is that they might even slow down on producing x1 for usa. meaning, though rogers has exclusive with sony ericsson, theres still a high chance of the x1 not going to big in north america.
they've had too many issues with the x1a so far. issues with sony and htc and even x1a has problems on the north american 3g network.
just base on some stuff i've heard and read up on.

Nexus One European 3g Networks

Does anyone know if the nexus one will work on european 3g networks?
http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/google-nexus-one-specs-leaked-sales-by-invitation-only there is a spreadsheet with the baseband versions and if i compare this to my htc hero where it says hsdpa 900MHZ and 2100MHZ then it looks like that the hero will work on europe 3g? because it uses 900, 2100 +aws which is t-mobile usa?
looks like the n1 supports the UMTS band I (2100)
nearly every telco uses this band in europe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UMTS_networks
yes you can use 3g in europe
Yeah it should Work like mentioned above.
3 United Kingdom
T-Mobile United Kingdom
Telefónica O2 United Kingdom
Vodafone United Kingdom
Orange United Kingdom
Doesn't look like there's a network it wont work on in the UK!
The Nexus One may just work on other 3g networks from what ive heard just a rumor though.

Im using it (sim free version) in Russia on GSM (900/1800)
Works on SFR France.
Guys the N1 just doesn't work in the US on AT&T. Most places its going to work.
Works in France with Bouygues Telecom too.

Hey!
first hello, I'm a newbie here!
sorry if I double-post.
Is there a thread with the parameters of the different network operators for the 3G access ?

3G/ HSDPA on T-Mo G2 works in Singapore!!

Woot!!!
My GF got me a T-Mo G2 from the States earlier this week
Got the phone unlocked a few mins back via an online vendor
Configured my Singtel APN and guess what????
HSDPA/ 3G both work!!!
WOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTT
Let the IMPORTING begin
I am ONE happy camper
so i guess this is like the G1 where the 3G works worldwide?

the G2 supports 2100mhz which should work on 3G in most countries around the world... (correct me if i'm wrong)
Is it possible to post screenshots? I'm not being a skeptic, its just that I got very happy seeing your posts, and the screenshots would make me infinitely happy!
Oh and just to confirm, which band does Singtel use?
SingTel uses IMT Band I for UMTS/HSPA (2100 downlink/1900 uplink).
The T-Mobile G2 and the T-Mobile myTouch (TMO version of HTC Magic) have 3G support for IMT Band I and AWS Band IV.
So it should come to no surprise the G2 has 3G HSPA access with SingTel.
Cheers,
Kermee
who did you unlock it with?
