Dear All,
Please help, my new O2 EXEC is sitting here almost totally useless without ActiveSync.
I did a very stupid thing:
I plugged in the Exec via the USB cable before installing ActiveSync 4.0.
What used to happen (back inthe day 2001 etc) would be that windows would install its own driver for the portable device and then when you subsequently installed ActiveSync its drivers would not go in and hence ActiveSync would not recognise your device.
What is happening now seems like the same sort of issue in that now having installed ActveSync it is just sitting there saying no connection.
For ActiveSync 3.6 and below this is a documented problem and here is the fix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264693/en-us
BUT for me this does not work (well because there is no yellow unknown device in Device managers other devices).
In AUDIBLE terms
a) I get a du-duh sound when I plug in EXEC (like if you plugged in a USB key for example)
b) It shows up in the Device Manager-> Network Adapters as "Windows Mobile-based Device"
c) ActiveSync 4.0 or 4.1 does NOT give me the dulde-de-dah sound
d) ActiveSync shows no connections
Anybody any bright ideas? Surely I am not the only twonk to have inadvertently plugged in the EXEC first
Answers greatly appreciated.
BASICALLY HELP
PS: Have also looked at ActiveSync trouble shooter 2001, the ActiveSync 4.0 troubleshooting article from Msoft, tried switching off firewall, no result. Have tried deleting the Mobile-based Device, uninstalling AS 4.0, rebooting, reinstalling AS 4.0 or 4.1 then plugging EXEC,no good.
PPS: I convinced a friend to let me install AS 4.1 on his computer and then plugged in the EXEC and all was fine, so the EXEC itself is sound.
Maybe this will help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
Sorry, didn't read your message good.
Just see now you already did looked at the link....
But another idea: if your device works on your friend PC, then why not
do a clean install for the OS on your own PC?
Maybe this will solve your problem.
Dodger,
Thanks for the thoughts. Well actually thinking about a reinstall of my computer due a moments lapse of concentration is a difficult undertaking. With the backup of the on computer databases as well as over 100 applications installed, I think this would take me several person days.
Currently my thoughts are to clone the partition and then do a windows "over install" onthe clone, but logically that will not work because <of course> the whole point of an over install is that the registry and all applications are preserved.
I spent over 3 solid hours of googling, installing, uninstalling drivers yesterday trying to fix and can't believe I am the only one who has had this problem!
Perhaps somebody with a working ActiveSync can elaborate how does the EXEC show up in device manager (when its plugged in and synced), and also what device driver XP and /or Windows 2003 server would be using.
Thanks mb.
I was facing similar issue. Solution? Yes, uninstall my firewall, connect and sync with my JasjAr and then install the Firewall with Jasjar already connected !
This may help:
Open network connections on ur PC so u can see all connections.
Make sure AS (PC side) is enabled for USB
turn off JJ and plug it in to USB
Turn on JJ whilst watching the window of netwrok connections on ur PC
A new connection icon should pop up, then MAYBE dissapear again
Right click this icon, before it dissapears, and check it's enabled, then select properties
Now check the following items:
- does top box say "windows mobile based device"
- click "configure"
- under configure, is there a button somewhere (mine's working so I can't recall exactly where) that says something like "enable mobile device". If so, then you need to click this.
If this all fails, then repeat but with another USB port. The reason for this seeming waste of time is that you will get a DIFFERENT "Local area connection nn" icon, which may work for you.
I cant believe there hasnt been one mention of rebooting your PC - Which I can assume you already have done?
What OS are you running on your PC?
I have only just got my MDA PRO but this may help! as I did the same thing and for a while XP Pro wouldnt recognise the device.
Uninstall ActiveSync
Reboot PC
Install Activesync V4.0
Plug in USB Device
If there is still a problem connecting you shoudl see a USB device not recognised in your deviuce manager.
It almost seems like there is a time you have to wait before XP will respond normally to you unplugging and replugging in the USB.
Failing this you may have to uninstall Activesync and tehn remove all activesync registry keys it may have left behind! Then reboot and start again!
Just having tisproblem now, this is pïss poor of MS to still be foisting off onto us this Activesync package in such a terible state.
I've just had activesync stop working on me. It would connect but then refuse to sync anything even though it previously worked fine. I think it got upset after I booted up the PC with the Exec connected.
Anyway an uninstall and reinstall of Activesync on the PC cured the problem. Not the most robust software though.

What works for me is to turn off the handheld, and connect the cable after that. Then turn on the device if needed. Works mot of the time then.... no excuse for MS though....
Yesterday I updated my T-Mobile Wing from the stock WM6 to WM6.1 and OpenTouch 4.0. I am running Windows Vista so I have to use the Windows Mobile Device Center. My problem is the first time I tried to sync I had no issues (contacts and email/appts). Now when I try, it doesn't even connect to my device. Anyone have any suggestions on why I'm having this issue?

No it doesn't have bluetooth built in or anything. Like I said, I was able to get it sync'd last night via USB and now its not even connecting.
I just went and bought a bluetooth usb adapter for my lappy. i'll see if i can get it to connect/sync that way.
I can sometimes (rarely connect) but can't sync
Any other options on why I can't sync? I'm running the wing with WM6.1 and Touch Point 4.0. My OS is Vista Home Premium so I have to use Windows Mobile Device Center.
thanks.
Yes I have one option.
When you first log in to your windows profile as your desktop is loading your computer should make a small melody sound right after this connect your phone to the computer, give it a few moments you should see the small Windows mobile device center screen start up. I know it sounds weird but I had the same issues and after months of endless research I accidentally discovered this.
The bad thing is you have to restart your computer and connect on desktop loading everytime you want it to recognize your device through Windows Mobile Device Center.
Please let me knows if it works for you.
I haven't really figured out an entirely foolproof method (haven't tried BigREDD's suggestion yet), but I usually just keep plugging it in and unplugging it until it's recognized. Restart the computer with the phone already plugged in via USB. Soft-reset the phone while it's already plugged in via USB. Make sure repllog.exe is in your startup. I've never had any luck starting ActiveSync from Programs and then hitting "Sync", but maybe you will.
Help! Cant Sync No Blue Tooth Only Boot Screen
UUUUGGG! Good grief. today has been a charlie brown day. will you please help me?

i could careless about active sync, i just want to plug my phone into my pc and transfer files in and out. ive also tried the disk drive option but still no go?
if i enter bootloader and plug it in it recognizes the usb setting but when the phone is normal, it doesn't??
it did this with the stock rom and its also doing this with nrg titanium rom.
any help would be appreciated
Same thing here.
It charges through USB but it doesnt connect.
If i choose the storage option it works fine.
I want to sync my outlook and i cant...
What the heck...?
i know this may seem a bit "it helpdesk-ish" but try re-booting your PC
Come on... give something drastic!
Already done that, rebooted the pc and the hd2...

believe it or not i have done that mannyy times and did alot of device manager things to try and let both computers recognize the hd2 but still nothing haha..
ive had previous hd2's and they've all connected fine untill this one, maybe its this specific one thats giving me trouble. but regardless, it charges via usb then it should be able to recognize it
Check the active sync settings to ensure that usb connections are enabled. You can tell be looking at the system tray icon - there's a read circle with a white X in it if USB is disabled.
Saying that though, if it doesn't even recognise it when the device is in USB mode, I'd try a different cable. It's perfectly reasonable that the cable could power the device but not fully facilitate a USB connection.

That is very weird. Sorry mate - never heard of it doing that for anyone before.
Make sure you have the mobility center/active sync program installed on your computer. Without it it won't work.
On Vista or Seven, with the HD2 plugged in, you can find the program/drivers by launching and refreshing manually Windows Update. On XP you have to do that manually.
Good luck.
This happens to me often. In my case I have found it to be a weird driver issue. Go to device manager and look for the yellow triangle. Right click and update driver software. This worked for me I hope it helps.
bit late but just flashed maxsence and i love the look, but have allready had to restart by phone 10 times in 10 minutes. I'll wait for the next release. back to GTX for now.
Good work NRG. keep it up.
this is one of the many WM6.5 errors!
need Android soon!
Ok here we go.
The phone did not connect through activesync to my pc. When i selected to connect as mass storage it connected.
I checked for driver issues in device manager but nothing came up.
I checked the hd2's activesync. Bingo! the activesync was crashing when i was running it. I had to hard reset the phone.
Now it works fine.
My guess is that maybe a program that i installed recently was buggy and created this particular problem. Unfortunately i have about 50+ programs installed (including themes etc) and i m not sure which one it was.
I was installing all the programs again today one by one and after the install process was completed i connected the hd2 to usb to find which app was the problematic one.
After installing almost(some were found useless) all of the apps (here is the crazy part) the hd2 still was connecting through activesync....
HTC will drive me nuts...
Anyway the phone now connects correctly.
I cant understand which was the problem....
as odd as it may sound i think i figured it out.
i think its the usb cable that im using, i have to wiggle it around for it to connect to active sync but once it connects its not a stable connection as it cuts in and out.
but charging capabilities work though!
pos wire, i ordered a new wire and if that one fails also, i will have to get my hd2 replaced for faulty usb port
thanks for all the replies much appreciated
@k20a1
Try to hard reset the phone.
It worked for me.
If not again, then use your warranty!

"Disk drive" mode not working with XP laptop
HD2 is working fine with my desktop, but wit laptop I can only use ActiveSync to browse files.
When I connect the USB cable I get:
"Found new hardware wizard"
but it tells me that it Cannot Install This Harware - Disk Drive
"An error occurred during the installation of the devie The system cannot find the file specified"
And I only have "Finish" to click - if I click it the wizard lunces again immediately and goes on and on with no end.
HD"/Leo does not appare in Disk Manager (I know ablut the drive lettering issue)
I'm sure its my XP issue, but I havent found drivers to fix that, and I'm not about to reinstall XP on my lappy in near future.

I share the same here and I was despaired of trying to solve it with any logical, as well with illogical, measures. Such as: rebooting, changing usb cables, reinstalling activesync 4.5, etc.....etc...blla..blla...blla...
However, I solved the "Transfer files issue" by taking out the sd card from the HD2 and connect it with an external cards reader to my pc.
The card reader connected and works with the same usb cable that does not work with the HD2.
That way I load it with all files and in the same occasion I reload into my computer the daily spb backup files.
However, I have the feeling that the reason for that problem is a missing file/driver named: "Setup1.SPL" in the pc windows operating system.
In order to solve that it seems that only reinstalling windows on my pc will be the solution which defiantly do not like.
Hello,
since yesterday I'm experiencing serious troubles with my Leo on my desktop computer.
I didn't install any new application, but now my USB connection is reset continuously and doesn't allow any synchronization to be put in place.
I use Windows 7 Ultimate for the x64 architecture on both desktop and laptop computer.
What happens is the following: I plug the microUSB cable into the PDA and Windows detects it (sound). After a few seconds the device gets disconnected (sound) and is unavailable in WMDC. After a few seconds more, the PDA is detected again and this continues forever.
Connecting the PDA to my laptop gives no problem: I can connect the PDA to the laptop without establishing a full relationship and the two arrows appear in place of 3G/Wifi icon on WM6.5 screen.
Trying to restart PDA does not fix the problem. Rebooting the desktop computer does not fix the problem. Updating the BIOS on the desktop didn't fix the problem. Changing USB port doesn't fix. Choosing to use the PDA as mass memory rather than syncing didn't solve the problem, but the reset intervals became much longer.
Just a few minutes ago, Avast reported a strange "gszyad.exe" (AutoIt:Balero-C) to have appeared into music, videos and pictures directories, and it detected it as a virus. The last action I did before this to happen was to uninstall HP Imaging tools (which is part of my printer's drivers), but I found no information on that exe and I can't clearly see a relationship between a virus, if true, and USB reset. All other USB devices work and I see no more traces of the "infection" reported by Avast.
If I was under Linux, I would try to read system logs to seek for strange hardware events. Does Windows provide a similar facility in its Event Log system?
What can I do to restore syncing with my PDA?
Thank you in advance.
erm, have you tried deleting the connection out of active sync, not sure if its the same on win 7, but on xp you can delete the mobile device out of active sync and it lets you set it back up again,
Yes I did and it didn't fix.
However, reinstalling nVidia NForce drivers AND also switching USB port seems to have fixed. Dunno more...
Hopefully this belongs in this forum, I do have a focus, so I assume so.
So when I cget into connect to PC mode and plug in the usb cord, it does not truly connect with the computer, meaning the red sign thing that means don't disconnect does not appear, the screen just shows the screen with an arrow pointing the usb to the computer.
Would this be a hardware issue?
I've tried my two usb cords on different ports on my laptop.
Any advice?
I've tried more or less every other fix, but there really is no fix online for this issue, can barely find anything.
Use the USB cable that came with the phone. Other ones do not work with the Focus.
Same problem, even when I'm using original cable.
Yeah, I've tried both of my cables, and nothing works.
Kind of nice to know that I'm not alone though. Heh
Same exact problem. Samsung Focus. Original cable that came with that very phone.
I can't get the frigging updates to install because when the phone reboots in Connect to PC mode, the system doesn't recognize that it's been reconnected.
And when I try to use the WP7 support tool, which ALSO requires the phone to be in Connect to PC mode, the computer doesn't know the phone exists.
This is for C2PC mode ONLY. Recognizes fine in normal mode, but update won't complete in normal mode.
same thing intially happened to me. But when in pc download mode you have to make sure that you give your pc 5 mins while connected to your phone. The pc will eventually recognize it! I freaked out too but I did wait for it and it connected. This applies to the windows phone recovery tool, which i ran, and the updates alike. I highly suggest running the recovery tool because I tried updating without it at first and i received the timeout error. Also, make sure you empty in settings histories in the following sections, ie mobile, maps, and search.
You guys and gals are going to LOVE this.
Nothing worked, and of course, my obedient ass was using only the cable that came with my Samsung Focus.
So on a hunch, I decide to borrow my wife's cable from her HTC Surround. The damn thing has "HTC" stamped right on it.
And it worked. PC recognized connection in the Connect to PC state, which it absolutely would not do with the Samsung Focus cable.
As to siralex241's comment, good advice: when you use the Windows Phone 7 Support Tool, after it checks System Requirements, it will say nothing -- not even that it's trying anything, and no hard drive activity -- for a long time. Then it succeeds in one second. The message I saw was that installing updates had taken over 450 seconds.

Solution for update error 800705B4
Same thing happened to me. Kept getting error code 800705B4. Followed steps here and it worked fine. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530409.
I'm on to the March 2011 update. Been creating the backup for a LONG time now.
Well to be specific I have been getting error 8018121C1 (Something close to that) and all the KB articles say is to use the microsoft fixit tool, but that never works. It mentions that its a problem with the driver installing, and I've read online that when in connect to PC mode, Zune times out the update because it is looking for the drivers for too long. Along with that, other people have said that the device isn't being recognized as the right device. I've checked and so far I've seen that it recognizes as Windows Mobile or Zune. I don't think any of those are the right formats to have the update go through smoothly.
I have given up on updating the phone as of now. That is, until I can find a working solution.
I don't think I should contact Microsoft or AT&T about it either, simply because I think that Microsoft will just give me the KB articles, and AT&T... welll.. its AT&T.
@ jayinatlanta I have yet to try connect to PC with a different cable though.
