Best advice I can offer you is just to get used to your device. Get the feel of it and play with it. Once you have done this, then read the wiki so you understand more.
If after all of this you feel you want to change anything, do a search for it first, read up on it and then try it out.
There are plenty of apps/software/games/themes available for you to install on your HD. Apps/software & games which work on the HD can also be found in the wiki as well as in the software forum.
You can also change roms (operating system), but you will need to do some research on this first. Guide to flashing roms can be found here.
The most important thing of all is to research & read before trying anything. If your unsure of anything on any particular topic, ask your question within that relevant thread

New to the Sapphire

I am getting my new phone tomorrow and I am oh so excited. I got even more excited when I saw the fact I could mod phone. I have some experience modding game concoles and this seems awesome. I can always figure anything out but I wanted to ask and find out a few things.
How do I root my device?
What is the best/fastest mod to run on it?
Any suggestions on great apps?
Please get back to me.
Please read the sapphire hacking wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking
Read, read, read, search, read more, and just when you are about to ask a silly question that has been aswered a million times, do a google search. 99% of the time it has been asked and answered before.
thank you stokes for the info. I searched the Wiki but me being so new to modding phones I don't know all the lingo and didn't know the keywords to search. It wasn't a matter of me not searching the forums but not knowing the wording. so the alternate OS that the phone runs is called a ROM? other than that I know most of the words.

Tell us something about your phone.
What ROM / Radio you have on your phone?
(go to settings / about phone / software info...)
Then you have to choose a build. If you have time it is better to try several and choose the one you are most comfortable in. I tried 5-6 builds so far and yesterday I installed latest JDMS build and am very happy with it. It is not that fancy looking like Desire HD builds but it is very much faster and for me so far everything works.
As kokfann said it is best to do some research on forums and get a little better picture, but if you are stuck in something let us know. I came to this forum several months ago and I understand how much stressful can be searching the best solution on so much information here. And as I see often lots of people here are just waiting for a newbie to ask some basic question just to flame him horribly. Do some search and ask if you need something.

[Q] tutorial for building a rom from sdk

Plz read this and leave some feedback. My device is lacking developers compared to other devices. We have like maybe 2 true developers that know their way around code and what not. So i am trying my best to learn how to build roms. I recently taught myself how to port a rom and was semi successful in that it works except the normal problems like wifi, gps, etc.
Now the question. It there a tutorial on how to build a rom from sdk? Im seeing honeycomb roms pop up for other devices based on sdk. I would like to build a honeycomb rom for my device as well. I am clueless when its comes to code so i am currently reading up on things like "c++ for dummies" and other helpful books. im asking for either helpful links that a newbie can figure out with some reading and learning or guidance (if you're that patient).
Any helpful comments are welcome! Thx
Edit: been google searching before posting this thread and havent really stumbled upon anything too helpful. Just throwing that out so no one goes "it called a search, noob" lol

Total rooting / firmware / ROM newb. Where to start

Hi All,
I hope this is the right place for this post, if not please let me know.
I've got 20+ years experience in IT but have never looked at playing with the ROM on a phone. I have a OP5 that I would like to get a "clean" version of android on and have found several posts, blogs and youtube videos but they all seem to be missing some of the fundamentals.
Could someone point me in the right direction for maybe a general "how to put a new ROM on your android device" and / or something more specific to the OP5 if that exists. Happy to watch, read and learn but just not sure where to start.
Thanks in advance.
