Several questions about my Treo Pro - Palm Treo Pro

Hi guys and girls,
I have several questions about the use of my Pro. I searched online and in the manual, but could not find the answer. Perhaps you can help me?
- How can i silence the ringer in case of an incoming call? Sometimes I don't want to push ignore, but just silence it and let it ring out to voicemail. According to the manual I can push the volume button or any button key, but that does not work for me. I don't want to use the ringer switch for that, because often I forget to switch it back on, resulting in numerous missed calls.
- Active Syn keeps starting up itself. I have added my Exchange Server information and have set the schedule to manual at all times, but for some reason AS keeps starting itself. With my former WM devices setting the schedule to manaual did the trick, what's the trick this time?
-I am using SPB Pocket Plus 4.0.3 Public Beta. AS is not visible in the task manager as a running application and can therefore not be closed. The built-in taskmanager does show AS as running and enables me to close the app. However, the built-in task manager is only accesible by clicking the top-right corner on the Today screen, not when I'm in an app. The SPB task manager is available any time the OK or X is in the right corner, but does not show AS. How can I let AS show up in the SPB task manager, or have the built-in one appear in all progs, not only at Today? BTW, I have AS not listed as an exception in both task managers.
- Which screen protector are you using and where can I buy them (online)?

how to completely close applications?

I find that when I visit SETTINGS --> SYSTEM tab --> MEMORY --> RUNNING PROGRAMS tab, there are always several applications running. It seems to be ones I have used and I pressed the cross or OK on the top right cornerto close it, but hey don't actually completely close. Is there a way to make sure they are closed and not running in the background?
You can install a task manager.
I recommend:
Wisbad Advance 2 (free as it is beta right now)
Good luck

Magic Button from http://www.trancreative.com
Freeware as well, and will enable you to toggle the top bar between the standard window title and a neat windows-like task bar.
the one and only CloseAll does the work.
wow guys, thanks a lot for your speedy suggestions. I will check them out, thanks again.
My VJOkButt is a very low profile task killer and can also be used with AE button plus to replace the red key, since it will also simulate hanging up phone calls. So you don't lose a button, but merely double it's existing functionality.

Another vote for MagicButton. Very small memory footprint, shows you which tasks are running on the status bar, can choose which apps it leaves alone, and gives a battery meter too. I found that WA/PocketPlus/BatteryPack etc were all too much of a resource hog on the Wizard.

Be VERY careful with Battery Pack Pro.
Totally banjaxed my K-JAM, I had to do a hard reset to recover.
I am currently trialing Spb Pocket Plus.
Does what you want plus a whole load more and has NOT caused any problems on my PDA.
Except it would not work when installed on my MiniSD card only installed internally.

I am using DinarSoft's HandySwitcher it is also very small and unobtrusive

I have loaded MagicButton on my Qtek 9100 and it works realy nice. But when I check AutoStart option in Settings, and turn device off and on error message appears that mbutton cannot be opened as it is not signed with trusted cerificate. Any tip how to avoid this message?
I switched to Magic Button, but the biggest problem is that it cannot be used with a hardware key .
I'm using the PIE hardware key as Ok/Close, but MB is just minimizing the apps, not closing them, which is really annoying.
If someone made it to close apps, please share ... if it is not possible, I'll switch to other task manager.
Try HandySwitcher from DinarSoft it can be assigned to a HW button. It can also sit on your tray and/or topbar.

tried it. i assigned it to the PIE (internet explorer) hardware button but when i press it, it just brings up its menu.
what i want to do is to close apps when pressing the PIE button or any other hardware button
just tried vijay's vjokbutt, works like a charm for me, does what I want

If not, then which task switcher can?
Thanks
@kelu: HS is actually a Task Manager so it will show you the list of running tasks and wait for you to decide which to close [that is why you see the menu and task list] to individually close an app you may tap the 'ok' button or do a 'tap-n-hold' [depends on what you put in the settings] of course this is not done via hw buttons. What I do when I don't have a stylus handy is I just hit the hw button and select 'Close All' now it may be a hassle to some people with multiple apps running but too me it is ok since I rarely run multiple apps [or more often than not I close the app when I am done via 'close all' before running the next one].
you can actually close applications by using the SIP keyboard and choosing CTRL-Q
this has worked ever since my Casio E105 (man, that was a long time ago...)

yes u are right, the ok/close functionality via a hardware button is not really conected to the task listing of a task manager, but nevertheless I found it very usefull
as a task manager now I use SmallMenu and GSPPocketMagic (I'm testing both to decide), as they are very light and they also extend the start menu

XDA Mini S Phone operation problem

Hi, I have recently bought the 02 XDA Mini S (UK edition) off o2.
I am havin the following problem:
If I turn on my phone and let it load at the today screen:
1. use normal programs such as file explorer, IE
2. Then open up phone (so it shows the keyboard, start> Phone)
3. When I go into task manager to close programs that I have previously opened the tasks have no text but have a picture next to them. if i select say a program that has the file explorer sign next to it and then select switch to it will open a different program, for example IE or the phone keypad to dial numbers
4. If i close all normal programs in ther i can then move down and select programs that appear not to be there, for example the screen is white but something is selected because there is a blue selection box around that item.
5. I can close all programs fine, but then if i go into Start > phone, nothing seems to happen. i can get into the phone option through the contacts menu but if i press the "keypad" left soft key nothing seems to happen.
I have identified that when i go into task manager and then click Menu > View > change mode a task named " cprog.exe" has a title phone when the phone keypad is open. When i end the phone task this title of phone disappears.
I have tried running a new task to get it to open but nothing happens. I took the phone to several mobile shops and showed the blokes in there. generally they have all said that it appears to be a glitch in the software and that I should ask for a replacement.
One of my mates has one and he has the same problem so i think it could be a problem across all the XDA Mini S's does anyone else have this same problem. Can you let me know how to over come it (So far my only way of overcoming this problem is to turn the phone off, and then on again to acess the phone keypad again but this is very frustrating)
Cheers all
was having the same problem myself i think its something to do with task manager closing down key pad.
do a google for magic button and use that to close down running programs instead of task manager should sort it out.
cheers mate, is there any that you can recomed (ie the one that you have installed yourself) I don't want to muck up the phone.
cheers
here you go.since i started using this i have not had the keypad problem.

ahh cool mate, your a life saver! can i easily uninstall this if i wish to, how would i go about it!
cheers for all you help
once its installed, how do i open this to close selected programs? cheers
use memory manager)
you're shutting down the phone app. don't shut it down or better still use settings/system/memory/running programs and stop what you want or stop all. you don't need to download stuff. it's been covered here before.

Phone/Magic button crashing

I'm using all the default ROMs from O2 on my Exec, I have the normal phone app. etc. - I've also got Magic Button installed because SPB Pocketplus's close button isn't working properly (it's just minimising).
Anyhow, when I make a call on the phone then try to close it it will not close. I can't seem to close it in System>memory>running programs because it doesn't appear and I end up having to reset my phone.
Can anyone think why this is happening? Do let me know if I've missed out any important details.
Closing phone app is not recommanded... You have to use another task manager which propose you to dissimulate the icon in the task bar. I tried a lot and Pocket plus, Wisbar lite, Handy Switcher and many more propose this option.
In fact, if you close phone application, you'll create problems with the connection to the mobile network. The only moment you can do that is for having more memory for an application and when you have activated flight mode. At that time, it's a good idea to close phone app. It's what I do. And to avoid a softreset to do that, you can use the vijay555 (the Great Vijay) app called PhoneToggle which really close it without softreset.
The phone application never actually `closes`.It just stays running in the background.
just press the red phone to return to the today screen.
Trying to close it with any task manager (espacially magic button for some reason) usually results in the Exec crashing.
Good task managers such as Wisbar Advance, ignore the phone app and leave it running in the background when you select `close all programs`,this stops the device freezing.
I`ve used Wisbar for years, and it really is THE best task manager available.
I tried using the red phone button but it does the same thing, at least after I've tried using the normal close button. Also, this never happened when SPB Pocketplus's close button was closing properly.
I can't use wisbar because I really don't like the skin features...
Does the phone icon show up next to the startbutton? If it does, tap and hold your stylus on it, it will show options. You can select an ignore option, this will hide the phone icon and stop magicbutton trying to close it.
RE
Try vBar. It doesn't close the phone application
BUT
it closes Pocket Hack Master :x
Going to try vBar - thanks for the suggestion.
vBar crashes the same as magic button when you try to close `all` programs.
You're right
I've been living with this accursed bug for a year.
It's why I need to reboot every cople of days - the more frequently depending on if you use the phone a lot.samewith the programs screen you can't close it or get back to today screen.
bloody thing! when is PPC vista coming out ;-)
RE

"vBar crashes the same as magic button when you try to close `all` programs."
Doesn't happen to my QTEK 9000
Because you obviously have somehow configured vBar to ignore the phone application.
SPB Pocket Plus is programmed to minimise instead of close certain apps like ActiveSync and the Phone app, and not to display these apps in the ALT+TAB feature.
This is because you shouldn't really close either of those apps, they are needed for correct functioning of the device!
Try SPB Pocket Plus again and bind a key to the ALT+TAB feature, I think you will like that as you see the Phone app and ActiveSync no longer "get in your way" - I love it (just like Windows XP)
RE
Sorry, you're right that vBar indeed crashes the system BUT only when connected in ActiveSync state. If not AS then it behaves alright.
BTW, vBar does not have an 'EXCLUDED' list or something like that
Just tried InClose Mobile and finds that using IntelliClose it does not close Pocket Hack Master. Others like 'CLOSE ALL' and 'CLOSE ALL BUT ACTIVE' will close Pocket Hack Master. This is explained in the manual

Close, not minimize?

Whats a good program that will cause programs to actually close out in WM6 instead of just minimizing. Maybe one that adds a - next to the x so if you do want to minimize you can.
SPB pocket plus and Quick Menu are both good progs for the purpose.
Have you tried the HTC Task Manager with the X button feature?
The new ROM w/ GPS works by holding on the X, if you set it that way
2x SPB pocket plus! Works great. Never have to think or worry about what's running in the background.
I've been using HandySwitcher by DinarSoft for quite some time. It's nice because it adds an icon to the taskbar at the top and allows you to see all programs that are currently running, and close them individually or all at once. The only thing I find is that even though it has a menu option to launch at start-up e.g. after a reboot, it seldom actually did! A small but annoying issue.
I'm actually trying the HTC Task Manager as mentioned above as it is in the DCD rom. It's okay and does what you'll need, but not as configurable or flexible as HandySwitcher. I'm trying it just because it's there and I was bored It replaces the default X in the corner and allows you to either hit the X or hold it for a short time instead to close the active program. The only way to see what else is open is to return to the Today screen and tap the same icon.

MobileMute - Mute/Unmute calls via hardware button

MobileMute is a little program that allows you to mute/unmute phone calls via a hardware button. It will also launch any other program of choice if a call is not in progress (that way your hardware button doesn't get wasted). I had searched for this functionality for while without much luck. So, I decided to write a quick little app to do it for me.
For those of you who had used the first version of this, you may have noticed the slight delay when running the program. This was because it was designed to start, do its thing, and then exit. That being said, it took a second for the program to initialize on startup which resulted in a delay.
I have changed this version to try to figure out what button you have it mapped to. If it can figure that out, it will stay active listening for future pushes to that button. If it can't figure out what button is mapped, it will act just like the first version (which is still functional, just with a slight delay).
I have also added a simple configuration utility for changing the settings (located in Program Files/itsallwright/MobileMute).
I originally developed this for my Kaiser, therefore it was originally posted in the Kaiser section. But, since it can work on other devices, I am posting the new version here. The only problem is that different devices have different button IDs. I will post some instructions for getting your button IDs on the devices that the default Kaiser button IDs don't work for.
I didn't test this version for as long as I tested the original. So if you have any weird problems with it, please let me know.
Original version is posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386810
Edit: Added MobileMute_v2.1 which adds support for more devices and Kaisers with non-standard ROMS.
Enjoy,
Jay
Button IDs
Here are some instructions to help find the button IDs.
If you do not have Visual Studio or another spy program, I saw a post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=251955 that might be able to help.
1) Open Spy Program and connect to device
2) Expand "Desktop Window"
3) Expand all child windows titled "Phone" (or whatever your "Phone" title is)
4) Locate the "Phone" window that has a child named "Mute" (or whatever your "Mute" text may be). If you can't find the correct Phone window, it is possible that is hasn't been started since the last reboot. To start it, make a quick call until you get the call status and hang up. Now you should be able to locate the window.
5) The next steps should be made while you are on a call, so make a call to Voicemail, yourself, or a patient friend . After the call is connected, make sure you are on the "Call Status" screen (the one that has the mute button on the screen).
6) Highlight the "Phone" window found previously and click the Messages button to view messages for that window. You will probably see messages continually being posted to the window.
7) Click "Menu" at the bottom and then click "Mute" (Note: do not click the "Mute" button on the screen as that will not give us the information we need.)
8) Click "Menu" at the bottom and then click "Unmute" (Same note as above applies)
9) Disconnect the call. The message window should stop getting messages.
10) In the message window, find all messages titled "WM_COMMAND" (there should only be 2)
11) The WPARAM value of the first WM_COMMAND message is the "Mute" button ID (Put it into a calculator to convert it to a decimal number)
12) The WPARAM value of the second WM_COMMAND message is the "Unmute" button ID
If you do find your IDs and confirm they work, please post them here with your device and ROM info to save others with that device the trouble.
Thanks,
Jay

If I'm not mistaken the purpose of this app is not to mute the ringer during an incoming call but to mute the mic during an active call. Also when not in a call it will launch your app of choice so when not in a call you're not occupying an otherwise usable button.

MobileMute_v2 with HTC Fuze
I have tried version MobileMute_v2 with the HTC Fuze and it does not appear to work. It will launch the program defined in the settings when not on a call, but will not mute the call, when launched while on a call.
I am launching this from the PTT button through the methods described in another thread. I created a shortcut short_ptt.lnk, which launches this application.
I have also navigated directly to the executable and run it while on a call and get identical results.
I am going to uninstall version 2 and try installing version 1.

I have now tested the original with the HTC Fuze with similar unsuccessful results.
sounds like a great app ill give it a go on my hermes tonight. thanks for sharing!

Mobile Mute and Fuze
I had also tried running the executable directly, not through the remap of the PTT key.
I did that to elliminate the possibility of it being a mapping to a key issue.
This does assume it works when run directly and not from a key.
I suppose it is possible that an exeception is thrown when the program checks what key was pressed to launch it, if there was not key pressed to start it.
As is, with the Fuze, the touch screen has on screen buttons for Mute and Speaker Phone.
I have remapped the long_ptt to Voice Command and the short_ptt to {"\Windows\ctlpnl.exe" cplmain 1} which gives you the lock screen so I can quickly change the timeout. I like it to lock quickly when not running GPS, but not lock at all when running GPS, but this last paragraph is not related to Mobile Mute, other than I no lnger have an available button to map it to.

Check in "/Program Files/itsallwright/MobileMute" for an ErrorLog file. If that file exists and has info, post the contents and I will see if I can figure out what went wrong.
Since it does launch the program you have configured when not in a call, the program at least initializes. If it also launches the program when you are in a call then it can't find the "Phone" window or the "ConnectedText" value. If it appears to do nothing while you are in a call, then it is likely that the Button IDs are wrong.

Fuze
A friend of mine with a Fuze let me check it out and I determined why it does not work.
The dialer on the Fuze has Mute/Unmute buttons on the screen, but the buttons do not have text (I suspect it uses seperate Mute/Unmute images instead). That being said, MobileMute determines the Mute State of a call based on the text value of the Mute/Unmute buttons. Therefore, it does not know what command to send.
I am trying to figure out a way to work around this, but in the meantime, I am sorry to say the Fuze is unsupported.
Just as a fyi... the Mute/Unmute button IDs for the Fuze are the same as the Kaiser (21408/21409)
I'll keep you posted on my progress with supporting this device.

Trying to use this app on my Mogul/Titan without success. I set it up on the button that would normally be conn mgr, went into cfg and set it to \windows\connmgr.exe
When I go to use the button I get a wait icon, the program launches and hides (still visible in Task Mgr). Opening manually works equally well (not at all).
The tools in the 2nd post don't work ("Class not registered" error).
While in a call the application launches (with a massive delay I might add) then performs its functino properly and mutes the call, no delays after initial launch.
There is no error log in the program's folder.
Help?

The initial start of MobileMute does have a delay. That is the reason I created v2 that will stay running. If MobileMute shows in task manager after you run it, then it found the hardware button you have it assigned to and is listening for future presses of that button. Since it does Mute/Unmute the calls, the program is functioning as designed.
As for running "\windows\connmgr.exe". I also cannot run that program (even manually). I don't think it is an app to be used that way. Are you sure you don't actually want to run "\windows\CommManager.exe"?
-Jay
Heh.... umm... oops >.<
That's rather embarassing lol... You're completely right, I picked the wrong exe. It works 100% perfectly now.
I just wish it would hide completely and not show up in my tasks list... I have a tendancy to hit that kill all button rather than pick them out one by one.
thanks. this is a good idea... i'll be using it.

Well, it turns out that the Fuze isn't the only device with that dialer. I recently found a ROM (Phoenix v2) that has touch flo and a similar dialer to the Fuze. I put that ROM on my Kaiser to reproduce this issue on my own.
After quite a bit of research and learning, I found a way to detect the Mute state of a call via TAPI. The Mute/Unmute button text is no longer needed.
I have no way to test with an actual Fuze, but I am pretty confident it will work now. I have added the new version to the original post.
-Jay
I've got v2.1 loaded. Detection on Fuze works, the registry shows mute/unmute id's 21408/21409. I'm using the short_PTT.lnk method. When I press PTT, I can see the titlebar flash 'MoblieMute' text.... but the mic does not mute.

When you are not in a call, does it open the configured program (BubbleBreaker by default). Also, if you look in task manager, is MobileMute listed?
