Hi,
Just wondering if anybody can confirm whether the G1 can download/view email attachments? I currently have a .doc in my "Email" app - I thought I read that attachments work, but I see no way to open it.
Any ideas? Or is this simply not possible?
Thanks.
There is no box. Does this mean the G1 has no native .doc viewer? I thought it could view .pdf and .doc etc okay? What downloads will I need?
Cheers.
I would try getting either astro or linda file manager. They are both file managers that enable you to view .txt files. Maybe having a program to associate with txt files would somehow let you download the attachment. Probably not, but hey its worth a try.
Edit: I thought you were talking about txt files, I see you are referring to doc files, I. Searched the market and it looks like g-notepad is the only thing that supports the doc filetype. Hrmm, that's kinda crappy that you can't download a doc attachment. Good luck with this one, let us know if you have any success!
Currently there is no doc viewer (that I know of). There is supposed to be a pdf viewer on the Market, but from what I hear it's not very robust. Dataviz should have a version of Docs2Go for Android sometime this year.

Anyone know how to associate .txt & .doc files with Word?? Or associate a file type to a certain program??
I dont know what happened, some how they got disassociated with Pocket Word. But than a strange thing happened, I connected my 8125 to my PC and synced with it. I transferred a couple of .doc files over to it and somehow they got associated with Word :-/. I tried to do the same with .txt files but no luck.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
This really chaps my nipples as well.
On Pocket PC X-2003 you could go into file explorer and change file associations right there. Apparently now they don't give people the option by default. What happens when some shmuck program hijacks a filetype? When I saw this functionality missing on my Cingular 2125 Smartphone I wasn't too dissapointed, but it's rediculous that they took this off the PPC platform also.
I think you can still do this with various tweaking programs. Just make sure that they support WM 5 before even thinking about it. Not sure if you can find this in freeware or commercial. If you spot anything good that's freeware, please let us know.
RESCO Explorer can do it
Cheers
hrb
or you can have a look at the reg fr word, i have found powerpoint and excel, not sure where word is!!
I think gsfinder can do it, for free.
V
I couldn't find an option with GsFinder to associate apps...but i did one one with Resco Explorer.
Is there anway to change the icon to Pword for a file?? Its still the same as before, but it's working nonetheless. Thanx

Hi!
After testing the many Roms in the forum, i found Adobe Reader LE installed on PDAmobiz ROMs.
I've been looking for this version of Reader, but have not been able to find it, even at Adobe's web site.
Anyone knows where to find it?
Is that only for AKU 2.3 or 3.2 or something like?
Reader 2.0 is so heavy on memory and works way slower!. The PDAmobiz version is the best I've seen so far.
Thanks.
Just copy the file "\Windows\ppc_adobereaderle.exe" from PDAMobiz's ROM. You can place this file to any folder in your PPC and run it from there.
Thanks so much for your answer, I will try.
BTW, anyway to extract that from the install files? I'm currently running the last Qtek ROM, and would like to avoid the install/extract/re-install procedure... even the temporary directory during install does not have the app.
Or would you mind to PM me the file if you're running it?
Thanks in advance.
Adobe Reader LE attached.
acrobat reader 2.0 lite

1.- It DOES display pictures.
2.- BTW, the conversion you're talking about is not done by Reader LE itself. I Don't do any conversion, on the contrary, I Copy PDF files straight to my SD card or via Active Sync without any problem or transformation. (please see next post -edited-)
3.- Adobe missed the point, Reader 2.0 is 8 MB big, both in storage AND in memory while running....
4.- As for the conversion, it seems to happen ONLY if you have installed other version of Reader, or the latest one coming from Westek (ClearView)
5.- Maybe there are some Tagged files that will not display correctly, or that do not reflux, but PDF is all about displaying documents EXACTLY as they were designed. I dont care about reflux, nor do they display properly at all times...
Really, the only reason I see for Adobe neither supporting LE reader nor allowing to download that from it's web page should be compatability with new features... Who cares at this time?
Continued....
Just for info...
6.- PPC Reader 2.0 when installed from your PC, does not allow you to uninstall the "PC part" of itself, nor does it undo its installation changes: It activates conversion of PDF files to TAGGED PDF files, thus making (on a 30 k file) increase its size FIVE TIMES! and displaying incorrect on every other pdf reader, as LE itself.
7.- Even unistalling PPC Reader 2.0 from your PDA, retains those settings, so you have to go manually to your Active Sync Advanced options and change .PDF files conversion to none. You will notice how fast and nicely Reader LE performs.
I'm sorry to insist, but it's a pitty to discover such a nice performer as Reader LE is, just to see it "orphaned" from it's own creator. In fact, even trough a deep web research, it's impossible to find.
IMHO reflux is a flawed patch from Adobe, it screws many files making them unreadable.
Hope it helps.
And again, many thanks to the PDAmobiz guys and Khuanchai.

Oh, I can definitely verify that this shows pictures, I am reading my latest issue of Popular Science. Way cool, and thanks, I need lots of PDF's for my job and have been too lazy to to take apart the full Acrobat installer so that I could install from Linux.

This is way faster, better and "lighter" than the one on Adobe's own website. It's weird why they elude this version from downloading. :-(
I get a lot of emails with pdf attachment. Is there a way to automatically associate the pdf attachment with Adobe Reader? After installing the adobe reader le, when I open a pdf atachment in the email itself, it can't recognize the file. I have to save it first and open it from Adobe Reader.
Perhaps there is a Reg Edit for this.
Thanks.
I second that request:
Can you set Adobe Reader to be the default PDF viewer so you can open attachments?

Since you are NOT installing the program, the only way I think of is editing the registry and subtitute the program now "tied" to .pdf extensions by the path and name of your reader LE.
Hope it helps.
You've got to manually put in the registry settings to associate both "open" and "opendoc" under "pdffile" to Adobe Reader LE.
Try this also .. seems newer build.

Abode Le Zip
Thank you for the Zip file (a file not found elsewhere by me anyway)which worked fine on my ipaq hx2000 when nothing else did!
I have two Linux apps, Tuxcards & Kontacts, for which I am urgently looking for data compatible WM6 apps.
Any suggestions?
bump...bump....bump...
you can import and export .vcf-style vCards.

I realized that about Kontacts myself by now.
But what about the XML file format of Tuxcards?

Not sure what exactly you trying to do ... but I am a long time Linux desktop user. Synchronising my HD2 with Kontact (the contacts and appointments) over SynCE and OpenSync without problems.
Syncing is of no interest for me, as I never use that unreliable process anyway.
Never sure what gets overwritten where.
I have TONS of tech notes stored in my Tuxcards archive which I need for my work. So I'm desperately looking for an XML viewer for my SmartPhone that can handle/display the TuxCards archive.
I've read a TuxCards look-a-like tool called BasketNotes, but it also only exports in HTML format.
And that makes the entire Collapsible Tree functionality of Tuxcards go away.
Its a real pain in the rear trying to browse through hundreds of static web pages on a smart phone.
Anyone know of a way to easily import Tuxcard XML archives e.g. into Phatnotes?
bump...bump...bump
Sorry, but I'm still looking desperately for an XML Reader for WM6.
Anyone got any ideas here?

Edit:
I just tested the 1st one in the results, and it works fine. It's ugly, but it works. Spend some time with the rest of the results if you're not happy with the 1st one.

Hhhmm, I had googled my eyes out for an XML WM6 reader and couldn't find *anything* other than Porn Sites & Crack Torrents....
I'll try the Haali Reader for starters.
Thankz a lot...
I tried all of those your Google list came up with and none works.
The best I get is some notepad like prog which reads XML like a flat text file.
Not one of them even cares to interpret the inner structure of the XML data, so no chance of a snowball in hell to get a hierarchical notebook like layout of it :-(
Specially that Haali app was a big disappointment here.
And even apps like phatnotes only support plain text file imports and TuxCards doesn't export to plain text....(only to HTML)

Stupid question for you then - Why not export to HTML and use Opera?
Edit: Sorry, just realised I missed one of your earlier posts...

The question wouldn't be that stupid if not for the ABYSMALLY LOUSY quality of that HTML export
While TuxCards itself offers dynamic tree navigation, the exported HTML file is one big static dump, w/o proper font sizing and minimal (if any) graphic support.
In essence, its a pain in the rear to review, specially on a PocketPC device.
I think they just put it in there to have something listed under "Export" (just like the PhatNotes folks with their lousy Text Only import "feature").
I use dropbox to study on the go, and have several .ppt files in there from lectures, however, I can't seem to open them on my Play. It says error when opened with OfficeSuite, it lists it as an Input Output Error, file now found? Eventhough I have it downloaded?
Anyone able to help me with a way to view Microsoft Documents on my Play? I'm new to Android and need all the help I can get
Thanks guys,
Niall

I HAVE tested a nice tool . you can get in Windows store :
search for:
Pocket File Manager
it is a real file Manager.... some less fuctions are missing but it is very very nice.. and all they have told me it is impossible.... it is possible how you can see it
it works fine and great .... it can follow: send every file by Bluetooth... you can open every file it is legal docx, rar, zip txt . jpeg, mp3 , mp4 ... realy legal ... it opens what is on the device! !!! and you see a great file structure and you can use skydrive........ everyone who says it is impossible im think that they doesn't try whats possible ...
I have find somtehing interessting

maybeee it should us help to get a Explorer to wp8
Have you looked at the description? It is limited in exactlly the same way as described around here all the time.
Limitation (Please read it!):
Windows phone has some limitations which prevent third party applications from accessing parts of files system. You cannot access video files, music files, Document folder. So, until Microsoft open it, please do not ask us to implement this feature. It is impossible right now.

It can access SkyDrive, FTP servers and it's own private storage. You CAN NOT access the phones Documents Folder and other Folders. You can launch an Office Document and edit it but it will then be saved to the Office Hub and the Explorer Application will still retain the old version prior to editing.
So while this does look like it works around it a file explorer in the way that people are demanding is still not possible.

i have tested the tool ! and it works .... it reads out some lokal files and the complete Photo and Video library!! it is a tool for lokal the link in the link it is development of it that will be release in future
but that what im testing it works everything what im saying.. and it is a file Explorer for local and for skydrive!!!! as i tested some other tool too ... it is a pdf Reader... not the Microsoft one! another one ... it can be read out the pdf files of sdcard and on local phone ... .. so im think it is possible to do a great file Explorer but we have to try it..
http://www.1800pocketpc.com/file-explorer/
Oh boy
I wish it were trued, but it aint.
Second, what Stevie said.
presumption
im think we can use one trick ... srry im not a guy who can much develop
but the idea is maybee great?
if i can Open a file of the Folder of the pocket Explorer so maybee Folder Pocket Explorer\docs\Alice in wonderland.docx in word mobile 365 /15 opend it ... but the Office hub can't find the file if im opened...... but in the functionality it opend................ im think the "lock" isn't realy a lock....... im think it is something like a key in the Windows regestry of wp8 ...that disable the Show of other Folders... but every tool can be Access all the Folders that are on the phone...... if it was a real access lock it isn't be possible to open a docx file in word from a Folder outside it is registered in Office hub ... in the tool it is added the photo hub ...
im think a clever developer shouldbe can solve the Problem without to Bypass the "lock" of MS ... Note ... In Real Windows 8 it has security informations .... but if the locked for some users you can't see the files and you can't opend it.... but im think in wp 8 there isn't this the Problem ... the Problem is it disabled in the regestry to Show something that can be accsess all the Tools
No the developers can't bypass this, as far as I am aware. It isn't just the registry key (you may be right about that one), but the runtime itself does not allow these kind of things. I have been looking for way to break the file associations, and there seems to be none, other than jailbreaking and hacking into system settings.
Yep tested this one today on my new Lumia 520 and it even does not show the music folder -_- ... Stupid limitation from MS.
