Video Settings on HTC HD

I see several other threads on this subject, but all go into conversations on the use of third-party conversion software. I use a Sony Vegas Pro 8 video editing software which can convert to any format/settings (and incidentally costs more than the HTC device itself).
What I am looking for is the best video settings as for:
1: type (wmv, mp4, etc)
2: codec
3: bitrate
4: size
5: framerate
I’m trying differing settings at random, but as of yet haven’t resulting in a better video than was on my 2003 Palm T3. If I find a good fit I’ll post it, but would be interested to see if anyone has found the best settings mix. HTC tech support are no help and have little to no understanding of video formats.

2: video: h.264 audio: aac
3: 800 - 1500 Kbps audio: 128Kbps
4: 800x480 16:9 cropped
5: Original (25 -30)
Play the resulting file in Album htc player or Windows Media Player.
It's what I use and it works great!

Willy1973 that works much better, thanks. Still some intermittent stuttering, but I suppose thats down to so much overhead in WM6.

1500 is too much. Set 1000 and it wont lag ever.

^ I've used "super" for a long time, once you get the settings right, it's very good. However, my Touch HD wont play the videos i converted to my atom life.
Also even with the video bitrate set to 600 there is still some stuttering. (when using the default "video player". As of yet I've not been able to make WMP find any of the mp4 videos on my memory card, and the TF3D album only finds videos stored on the actual device itself.
The Blackstone video encoding GUI ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112 ) is neat and handy - especially if you just want to dump a few videos in and leave it running overnight - i've found it to be a bit slower than super, but there isnt much in it tbh.
I've not installed coreplayer yet -going to give that a try now, and see if that helps with the playback issues I'm having. But even so it would be nice to have the option of using WMP - if ayone has any ideas as to why it isnt finding the videos on my memory card? I've tried putting the vids in the main directory,and also tried creating a folder on the memory card called "video". Neither has worked yet.

WMP has a "open file.." menu item, for single files, in the library.
Album should find your memcard, press the left dialog-button, while in album..

Thanks for that, I'm now able to locate the memory card and videos located on it via the "album"... i was only seeing the previews in the photo and video tab. Can now locate all!
With WMP I can locate single files... but cant understand why they're not showing up in the library. Even after being played via WMP. (I should add, it has no problem locating music files, just video)
Both these solutions seems to have eliminated the stuttering I was getting before.
The reason i like WMP so much is that when one video is finnished it moves to the next rather than stopping completely.

I'm experimenting with Catalyst DVD Converter which I found in another thread and am unable to completely eliminate that pesky frame dropping every few seconds on my HD. Here's what's working best so far
1: .avi
2: DIVX5
3: 500
4: 400x240 (autocropped by catalyst dvd to fill the screen, which I really like!)
5: 30
Note: I use CorePlayer to play the videos. One thing I've noticed is that although the mpeg4 and h.264 files do play ok on win media player mobile, mpeg4 files are much larger that divx, and h.264 (also .mp4 extension) take 2-3 time longer to encode to the device. I've not had good luck playing 800x480 files as they shudder so badly because there's 4 times as much info for the HD to process, and the 400x240 files play really nicely. I use Dutty's 1.5 rom with tnyynt's sd card tuneup cab, which I think is already incorporated into the rom???

I've now disovered that WMP is finding my MP4 files, but for some reason it's adding them to my music library rather than to my video library?
Is there an option somewhere to tell it that .mp4 extentions are video?

With DVD Catalyst 3 (which I presume is the same) I use the default settings
1: .mp4
2: h264_ipod_hq
3: 600
4: 800 x 480
5: 30
I play them back with the Album player, (if you just use your file explorer to find the file and click on it, it will play in Album player by default) and get totally stutter free video. I was particularly impressed by the action seens in Tropic Thunder and Star Wars, where I was expecting to see frames dropped. But there weren't any!!
I have converted at least 10 movies, some from DVD, and some from .avi's. It auto scans from either start up or insertion in your player then finds the correct file from all the .vobs etc. With .avi's, you can just drag and drop.
When using the autoscan for DVD's, it's worth checking preview within Catalyst to make sure it has picked the correct language version, or indeed if it needs subtitiles for a foriegn movie.
I have tried about 5 different programs now for conversion and have found this to be far and away the best. I have now put my money where my mouth is and purchased it. (For those that haven't tried, it is available on a 7 day trial)
Top notch Video on the HD that is well worth comparing with your mates' IPod at last.

How do i convert the video using Sony Vegas? Ive tried "render to new track" but i cant choose the recomended video/audio settings there.

note that the only 2 players at the moment capable of playing video with hardware acceleration are tf3d music player and windows media player.

DVD to AVI conversion

Hi Guys
Not long had my Touch HD and now wanting to get some movies onto it to watch whilst travelling into work.
I downloaded a trial of DVD catalyst 3, however I did a conversion and the result is pretty poor. Nothing to show off by!
I just wondered, what video settings I should be using and even the best video conversion software to be using.

you should really do a search, there have been many settings for many various applications posted, there is even a GUI you can use (based on menconder).

Actually getting a decent DVDtoDIVx converter is quite hard... I'd suggest Xilisoft DVD Ripper really

DVDCatalyst is the best for me. The Touch HD is listed as a device with default conversion setting and watching movies with Windows Media Player is fantastic. Images are smooth and the HD screen is fantastic. Using the HD defualt settings in DCat creates files between 450-550 megs. DVDCatalyst is well worth the $20. They offer a full featured 7 day trial version here http://www.a3vs.com/

I've tried a few, and the best I've found is the one johnpatcher mentions above : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474955
Use DVDDecryptor to rip the DVD to VOBs, then VOBmerger to make the VOB files 1 big one - then run the Encoder above to make it perfect for the Touch HD. I admit its a bit of a faffing about, but it doesn't take much longer than using Xilisoft or something - which ends up with a movie with stuttery playback!

Another Perfect Video converter for our X1s

Just found this last night and don't know if anyone posted about this before, but it works flawlessly with my X1

Just set it for Sony Ericsson X1 as your default if you want, then select any file(s) you wanna convert, and BAM!!!! 1G of video converted in 5mins and reduced to about 150mb...Hope that this helps anybody else here like it helped me...Alohas for now.
P.S. Forgot to mention that this program only converts video files, but pictures as well as music files...just about anything...

What do you use to play the files on the X1

It appears that the program sets the X1's res at 320 x 240, I find that an unnaceptable quality for encoding to the X1.
It's a nice program though. I 'll work on custome settings . .

I use it to convert a video in 480*272 (I don't want 320*240!!!) and the audio is not synchronised with the video...

I use "HD Encoder.exe" found some where around here. it works fricking great for high def video like movies, divx, etc...
google it up!

You think you'd encode a video from 1, 2, 4G fo a bout an hours or so and then outputs to a file about 650MB for an X1? isn't it a little too big? I mean to phone came out with just 4G you'd only have enough for 3 movies. is there another lower file size converter?

Sorry, but I believe that the biggest they have for the X1 is 16GB...as for me, I'm using an 8GB microSDHD card and it's way more than enough because I only watch movies on my phone only during my class breaks which are about 15-30mins. What's so hard in transferring the files to/from your memory card anyways Transferring 4GB of files onto my card only takes me 2-3mins.

I tried many versions of that program and all of them didn't work with me...I always get errors with that program.

I'm also trying to find the sweet spot by manually setting it, but I'm having a difficult time doing so

My recommendation? Stick to Projection's HD video converter. See sticky for more info.

Yep....does the job.
Or if you can find the download link on their site and like to tweak your videos to the 9th degree you can use super

Super and Xillsoft are the two i used before i found the projection one. Projection thank you so much you are ftw!

Why take the trouble and convert anything at all?
Just use the coreplayer! it will play your basic xvid etc video's perfectly.
Yeah.. it's 700mb for a movie.. but it's not that you need to stack 20 movies on your phone

If you rip dvds with something like Nero, you can create DivX avi files that will play a treat in core player.
The native Windows WMP format plays perfectly in media player too.
The native HTC player format is mp4, and to be honest, that looks the best to me, but DivX in core player is about 99% as good.
Whenever I have something to watch, it's usually a DivX file, so I just copy it to the phone and watch it as is, without conversion (about 350MB per hour). I have a 16GB card with about 6GB of music, 2GB of installers and installed apps, and therefore 8GB free to put vids on (at the moment).
I should be able to get about 10 films on there, or 20 typical episodes of TV programs, at the above-stated average size.
A few people have had problems with core player, but there's plenty of settings that you can change. I've got it set to play nicely now, and there's very rarely any lag (toggling fullscreen off and then back on gets rid of that for me), and it looks gorgeous on the massive bright screen.

I am using HTC Touch HD video converter (use search in the forums for download ). It works fine to convert for example divx movies.

I find this to be putting the audio out of sync very slightly when converting xvids etc.

Yes me too. I converted several TV shows and the audio remained out of sync by about 0.25 seconds for the duration.

If you can get Core Player or TCPMP (core player beta) working well (which just takes some settings fondling), then you don't need to convert things. AVIs and MPEGs play perfectly for me.

Yeah, I know what you mean too! In fairness, the hi-def movie test thread with the helicopters movie on it looks sooooooooo much sharper and cleaner in the HTC player than it does in CorePlayer.
I'm just impatient. I just "rip" a movie or tv show and watch it straight off. I find converters to usually take as long as it takes to watch it.

Hehe, When I get time I am going to dowload a variety of converters and try to find one I like and one that works well. Ideally the one that was made for the HD would be perfect if the audio sync was fixed. I must admit though I havn't had chance to actively look for any solutions to that problem yet.

One thing I would like from the HTC Player would be a resume option.

In CorePlayer, go to Menu, Tools, Settings, Select Page, Video and set output to Raw FrameBuffer or GDI, and make sure quality is High. I also set Smooth Zoom on (not sure what it is though), and turn Dither off (I've had it hang on me when this was on).
I have mine on Raw, and it plays movies that are SD (telly size) perfectly. I can watch them on my TV via my PC, or just copy the AVI onto my memory card and watch them on the phone.

What version are you using? That's been in every version of coreplayer I've had.
I've just done a hard reset on my phone, and haven't installed coreplayer yet, so I can't tell you how to do it exactly, but the it's in menu under options and I believe it's orientation. Also, when a movie is playing it, touching it usually makes it landscape and fullscreen too.

Excellent, using GDI seems to have sorted out my frame flicker during fast moving sequences. Thanks!

Can't watch Avatar on the HD2

Hi Folks-
I know there are several threads on video encoding, but I think I am asking something new. I am using the retail version of Winx DVD Ripper which does a nice job overcoming encryption from my store bought DVDs so I can rip to my computer and then transfer to my HD2. Problem is I have workable mp4 files on my computer that I can watch after the process, but I am having mixed success watching them on the HD2.
Just recently, I ripped a nice mp4 version of Avatar that played fine on my computer, but when I transferred it to the phone, it would show the circle for the video player for half a second and then go back to my file explorer. This also happened with Black Hawk Down. I've had success with other movies such as Iron Man, etc. Am I running into some form of copy protection? If so, I'm annoyed as these are 100% retail DVDs I have purchased.
Specific settings for Winx include 800x480 resolution, sound to at least 160, using high resolution mode, even safe mode the second time I ripped Avatar to see if that would help.
Any ideas would be most appreciated, thanks!

Try the HTC Video Encoder. I've encoded 1080p .mkv files with no playback issues on my HD2. It's free, so can't hurt to give it a shot.

Try TCPMP player , install it then open the program and hit file than open and select the movie! let me know if this works.

Its just called video encoding GUI (saying htc implies they made it, when they didn't). But yes, I can highly recommend using it.
Also using tcpmp doesn't allow for full hardware acceleration.

Good to know what player do you recommend?

core player and tcmp player work all the time.. Dix player"sometimes work" but has small keys and audio issues but at least you can adjust sound and timeframe in fullscreen.

I will try the other encoding program. I downloaded pocket divx player and I couldn't figure out how to open up a new file and I tried to follow the directions in the program. Is it possible that I am having a hard time with my mp4 files because I transferred them not via Activesync but by the other option that pops up when you first connect your phone to a computer? Will post in a bit when I try the new encoder.
Edit: Tried the new encoder, but all sorts of error messages when I showed them the contents of my Avatar DVD. I have 33 files on the actual DVD, which ones am I trying to encode?

Don't use the video encoding GUI as it is awfully slow and doesn't even give you a great image quality due to the settings being made suitable for a Touch HD.
Just head over to doom9 and download MeGui. A bit harder to use, but at least you'll be able to encode them in under an hour with great IQ.
Just did an encode of my Avatar Blu-Ray(45Gb) that took a little under an hour and ended up with a 3Gb file with a bitrate of 2453Kbps and max at 10Mbps. Split it into two files of 1500Mb and the HD2 played them like a champ without a stutter in sight.
I also recommend you download eac3to(for audio ripping) and yamb(mp4 splitting).

Will try meGUI, guess people are thinking it has to do with the encoding huh? Even if it works ok on my computer but not HD2?

Yes. Just because it plays on the computer doesn't mean it'll play on the phone. Your computer's hardware is substantially "faster" than the HD2's. Optimizing the video through encoding is usually the answer.

Oof, this program does look confusing. I'm going to go through the help files and try to get a grasp of it all, but if you have some preset settings or a streamlined bit of advice, I'm all for it. So far I'm trying one-click method and I've been able to show it where the .vob files are and create a directory to place the file and working directory. There is a hick-up with something about the chapter titles and it looks like it needs a file but it shows nothing when I explore my DVD drive. The Megui wiki isn't very clear here...though the program looks promising!

try using dvdfab, select iphone/ipod encoding and after transfer your encoded avatar to your sd card.. i did it like that.

Tried Handbrake (couldn't reliably read DVD to burn), Winx DVD Ripper (couldnt play on HD2), couldnt figure out meGUI and the other encoder linked here, and I didn't have to use any other player other than the nice HTC one. Thanks again.

Problem is I have workable mp4 files on my computer that I can watch after the process, but I am having mixed success watching them on the HD2.
Just recently, I ripped a nice mp4 version of Avatar that played fine on my computer, but when I transferred it to the phone, it would show the circle for the video player for half a second and then go back to my file explorer. This also happened with Black Hawk Down. I've had success with other movies such as Iron Man, etc. Am I running into some form of copy protection? If so, I'm annoyed as these are 100% retail DVDs I have purchased.
Specific settings for Winx include 800x480 resolution, sound to at least 160, using high resolution mode, even safe mode the second time I ripped Avatar to see if that would help.
Any ideas would be most appreciated, thanks!

A lot of standalone players worldwide need a firmware update to make it work because Avatar BD uses a new encryption scheme called BD+ 5. I recommend u a blu ray ripper named PavTube.
